Today we talk about the October 2024 General Conference talk by Dale G. Renlund, “This Is My Gospel” - “This Is My Church"
Kevin and Todd gather to discuss Elder Dale G. Renlund's message from the Sunday morning session of April 2024 general conference. He compared living the gospel of Jesus Christ to kayaking in the ocean and how our direction and momentum are critical to our spiritual health.
Elder Renlund shares a story about kayaking and the advice he received from their guide about keeping momentum to avoid flipping over. He relates this to the doctrine of Christ, that as we consistently and diligently follow the doctrine of Christ, we will gain spiritual momentum and stay afloat. “Indeed, the elements of the doctrine of Christ—such as faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, repentance, entering a covenant relationship with the Lord through baptism, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, and enduring to the end—are not intended to be experienced as one-time, check-the-box events. In particular, “enduring to the end” is not really a separate step in the doctrine of Christ—as though we complete the first four elements and then hunker down, grit our teeth, and wait to die. No, enduring to the end is repeatedly and iteratively applying the other elements of the doctrine of Christ, creating the “powerful virtuous cycle” that President Nelson described.” “Consider how the expedition guide helped me after I flipped over in the kayak. He did not shout from afar an unhelpful question such as, “Mr. Renlund, what are you doing in the water?” He did not paddle up and chide me, saying, “Mr. Renlund, you would not be in this situation if you were more physically fit.” He did not start towing my kayak while I was just trying to get on top of it. And he did not correct me in front of the group. Instead, he gave me the help I needed at the time I needed it. He gave me advice when I was receptive. And he went out of his way to encourage me.” How can you love those around you like this? One of the most important aspects of covenant relationship is love. That prompted the title of this study––Evidences of God's Love: A study of Section 109. We will pair this scripture study with the messages from conference that will help us to learn important truths from both modern and ancient prophets as we study these covenant verses.
“Jesus Christ Is the Treasure” by Elder Renlund reminds us to not “look beyond the mark.” Here's a question to consider as you study: Where in your life can you see that you're looking for specific blessings instead of seeing what's there? Todd and Kevin attempt to review Elder Dale G. Renlund's talk from Sunday afternoon session of October 2023 general conference. Elder Renlund emphasizes to not look beyond the mark, and that Jesus Christ as “the mark” to look to and the treasure to be sought.
"When President Russell M. Nelson invited us to think celestially, it reminded us to look harder, take the long view, and change our perspective. For the next six months, that is our quest. We will consider Perspective, Devotion, and Relationship. Let us all look harder and think celestial. It will lead us to discover the rich blessings Heavenly Father has in store for each of us.”
The collective “Come, Follow Me” study of the Book of Mormon for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 2024 comes as the Church is celebrating a significant milestone for the distribution of the sacred book. In 1830, the Church printed 5,000 copies of the Book of Mormon, that number grew to 100 million copies distributed by the year 2000, and as of the summer of 2023, that number had doubled to 200 million copies. Now, as the Book of Mormon continues to find individuals worldwide seeking to know more about Jesus Christ and His role in their lives, Church members embark on a year of “Come Follow Me” study of this sacred book of scripture. This episode of the Church News podcast features Elder Dale G. Renlund of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles sharing his testimony of the Book of Mormon, as well as his invitation for all to study and discover the truthfulness of the book for themselves. The Church News Podcast is a weekly podcast that invites listeners to make a journey of connection with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints across the globe. Kevin and Todd tackle Elder Dale G. Renlund's talk from the Saturday afternoon session of April 2023 general conference. By intentionally walking the covenant path — from baptism to the temple and throughout life — one can receive the power to go against the natural worldly flow.
INKLINGS PODCAST SHOW NOTES:"Our hearts were drawn to the call of a prophet this April 2023 conference weekend. He reminded us that the easiest way to identify a follower of Christ is how compassionately that person treats other people. He told us that charity is the principal characteristic of a true follower of Christ, how charity defines a peacemaker. He promised us that if we would follow his counsel, we would arise as a spiritually strong woman of Christ. And then he told us the best is yet to come for those who spend their lives building up others. The prophet invited us to examine our discipleship, to make adjustments so that our behavior would be representative of a true follower of Jesus Christ. To live and interact with others in a higher, holier way. “I invite you to remember Jesus Christ. Pray to have the courage and wisdom to say or do what He would.” For the next six months, we plan to accept this invitation. In April and May, we will learn to UNDERSTAND HIS LOVE as we study the life and attributes of the PEACE GIVER. In June and July, we will study how to FEEL HIS LOVE as we find ways to experience PERSONAL PEACE. In August and September, we will discover how to SHARE HIS LOVE as we learn how to become PEACEMAKERS.Love gives second chances. Love asks, How can I help? Love is the welcoming in. Love doesn't stand higher, but meets people where they are. Love is never too good for someone. Love is full of grace. Love does not call attention to self. Love has an understanding heart. Love assumes the best. Love will not stand for injustice, helps carry the burden, creates trust, has high hopes and expectations. Love doesn't leave when things get tough.Love never fails. We look forward to spending the next six months with you!"
“Accessing God's Power through Covenants” by Elder Renlund reminds us of the power that comes through making and keeping covenants with God and Christ. Elder Renlund teaches that as we come unto Christ and are connected to Him and our Heavenly Father by covenant, we can be transformed and become perfected in Jesus Christ.

Have you ever felt inspired to do something that went against the grain? That has been the story of my life! When my kids were young, my husband and I felt inspired to transform our parenting in a way that went against the grain of popular parenting practices in a big way. We got some significant backlash for doing so, but our why kept us pushing forward, despite the opposition. The result was transformative. All three of our kids who have launched into adulthood have, at separate times, thanked us for how we raised them. This experience taught me that I could trust the Lord to lead me to the answers that are right for my family, even if they go against the grain (and they often do!). Listen in to hear the story and my top three takeaways that relate to strengthening faith in Jesus Christ. **Are you ready to STAND and start putting your faith into ACTION so you can have greater access to God's power? Recently, I watched a video about Jennie and Brent Taylor. Jennie shared this comment in her interview that "life is incredibly unfair in our favor". I paused and wrote it down because it struck me so hard. I began to think about the different unfair experiences I have had in my life and how God has taken something so incredibly unfair yet in my favor. Brent Taylor was killed overseas while serving a deployment. He and Jennie had 7 young children all in need of a father. Yet, Jennie shares her incredible story of faith and strength. Join my today as I share some people from the scriptures who have experienced incredible unfairness in their favor. "In unfair situations, one of our tasks is to trust that “all that is unfair about life can be made right through the Atonement of Jesus Christ.” Jesus Christ overcame the world and “absorbed” all unfairness. Because of Him, we can have peace in this world and be of good cheer. If we let Him, Jesus Christ will consecrate the unfairness for our gain. He will not just console us and restore what was lost; He will use the unfairness for our benefit. When it comes to how and when, we need to recognize and accept, as did Alma, that “it mattereth not; for God knoweth all these things; and it sufficeth me to know that this is the case." Elder Renlund teaches how to receive personal revelation through the Holy Ghost and how to avoid deception.
Elder Renlund lays out four elements of personal revelation in his talk “A Framework for Personal Revelation.” Here are some questions to consider while studying: How can you use these four elements to seek personal revelation in your life? How has the Spirit spoken to you in the past? How does the Spirit speak to you now? As we minister, we acknowledge the ninety-and-nine who are steadfast and immovable, even while we yearn after the one who has strayed. Our Lord seeks and delivers us “out of all places,” These prophecies of scattering and the prophecies and promises of covenant gathering are a consistent theme of the prophets, including President Russell M. Gong, Good Shepherd, Lamb of God]“When our backs are to the wall and, as the hymn says, “other helpers fail and comforts flee,” among our most indispensable virtues will be this precious gift of hope linked inextricably to our faith in God and our charity to others… May we press forward with love in our hearts, walking in the “brightness of hope” that lights the path of holy anticipation we have been on now for 200 years. I testify that the future is going to be as miracle-filled and bountifully blessed as the past has been. We have every reason to hope for blessings even greater than those we have already received because this is the work of Almighty God, this is the Church of continuing revelation, this is the gospel of Christ's unlimited grace and benevolence.” [2020–A:81, Jeffrey R. Holland, A Perfect Brightness of Hope]“Two characteristics of the water are noteworthy. First, though the small stream had no tributaries, it grew into a mighty river, becoming wider and deeper the farther it flowed. Something similar happens with the blessings that flow from the temple as individuals are sealed as families. Meaningful growth occurs going backward and forward through the generations as sealing ordinances weld families together. Second, the river renewed everything that it touched. The blessings of the temple likewise have a stunning capacity to heal. Temple blessings can heal hearts and lives and families.” [2018–A:46, Dale G. Elder Renlund uses the Young Women theme to teach about our divine nature and eternal destiny.
Las invito a centrar su vida en Jesucristo y a recordar las verdades fundamentales que hay en el lema de las Mujeres Jóvenes.
Elder Renlund expounds on the doctrine taught in the Young Women theme in his talk “Your Divine Nature and Eternal Destiny.” Here are some questions to consider: How do you step back from strong emotions, mental health, or the stresses of life and feel the love of God? How does your identity as a child of god work with and validate other ways you choose to identify yourself? What is your revealed path? “President Russell M. Nelson taught: ‘Too many people consider repentance as punishment. … But this feeling of being penalized is engendered by Satan. He tries to block us from looking to Jesus Christ, who stands with open arms, hoping and willing to heal, forgive, cleanse, strengthen, purify, and sanctify us.'” How were you taught about repentance? How does that differ from this definition? What is the Lord telling you? What questions do you want to study further? Questions? Prophets and Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have promised specific “healing” blessings for those who participate in family history and temple work. During his April 2018 general conference talk “Family History and Temple Work: Sealing and Healing,” Elder Dale G. Renlund of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles promised that through discovering, gathering and connecting one’s family, “you will find healing for that which needs healing.” Church News reporter Sydney Walker wrote a series on the healing blessings of family history, specifically focusing on how family history has helped individuals deal with feelings of anxiety and depression, address pornography addictions and work through traumatic family events. In this Church News podcast, she shares the stories of many Latter-day Saints who have experienced the healing power of family history. When we work to overcome mental health stigma, understand mental illness, “mourn with those that mourn” and “comfort those that stand in need of comfort,” we can create opportunities for healing and hope for the future. Elder Dale G. Renlund urges us to have Christlike compassion for others.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints posted a video this week from apostle Dale G. Renlund in which he pleaded with members to put on masks and put off assembling in large gatherings in response to the coronavirus pandemic. “Wearing a face covering,” he said, “is a sign of Christlike love for our brothers and sisters.” Renlund, a former cardiologist, emphasized that he was speaking not as a physician, but as an apostle, a position of great respect within the Utah-based faith. His words were just the latest in a series of statements and actions by top church leaders in support of public health guidelines. Still, they triggered strong debate between Latter-day Saints who support mask-wearing and those who don’t. A key question: Are so-called anti-maskers among the church’s membership guilty of not following their prophet? The short answer is yes, according to Latter-day Saint writer Emily Jensen, the web editor for Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought. Jensen discusses that question and the wider implications for the church in this week’s podcast.
Elder Dale G. Renlund discusses the important role of the Savior in our lives.
This week Moroni teaches us about various priesthood ordinances. I talk about Gratitude, and how I've been thinking about the Greatness and Goodness of God (specifically the talk, "The Greatness and Goodness of God by Dale G. Renlund from the April 2020 General Conference) and how that popped up in the reading assignment this week. Also, I announce the upcoming retirement (or hiatus???) of The Savior Said. Coming Closer to God Today on Finding Center we will begin with hearing from Dale G. Renlund with his devotional address titled, "Experience God's Love." Then we will hear from Rabbi Harold S. Kushner with his forum address titled, "The Human Soul's Quest for God."
The word REMEMBER originated from the Latin meaning “called to mind” or “mindful” and today we are going to talk about why remember is such an important word to us, in our lives, and in our spiritual journey. We share some personal and sacred spiritual and life experiences about remembering, and examples from the scriptures and from the Savior on why the word remember is, as Spencer W Kimball once said, “perhaps the most important word in the English language.” Remembrance has been an impactful element in our spiritual journey. And if it’s something that you feel has also strengthened you in the past, it’s very important that you write it down, talk about it, or share it with someone because building your testimony solely on a few miracles that happen in your life may not be as strong. They will start to fade and they may not come back to your remembrance as much. So doing those will help bring things to your remembrance and continue to strengthen you in the future. In this episode, you will hear: The number of times the word remember is mentioned in the Books of Scripture Examples of prophets and people having experiences of remembering Lessons from Alma the Younger Elder Renlund’s speech about the concept of a saint as a sinner who keeps on trying Neil’s powerful conversation with his brother and remembering the promise he made Approaching recovery from addition day by day Jesus as the perfect example of remembering the Scriptures in his teachings My personal experience when reading the words of Isaiah The power of remembering your purpose and your spiritual experiences The multiplication of my breast milk as a testimony builder Being careful about the other influences in your life that either dull or sharpen your spirit Supplementing your spiritual muscle-building with Scriptures Supporting Resources: Book of Mormon “Alma the Younger is Converted” video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zsxb5QVcGmQ Dale G. "Ponderar sobre a bondade e a grandiosidade de Deus" - Elder Dale G. Renlund, Conferência Geral de Abril de 2020.
We hear people throughout the religious world use the language of “blessings” when something difficult in their lives is resolved in a wonderful and, what seems to them somewhat mysterious, way. For some who are attuned to trying to experience the heartbeat of the cosmos, we will hear about all of life as a blessing, the very large and very small, all the good and all the bad, light and dark, life and death, things unexpected, desired, dreaded, or confusing. For others who think of God in quite personal terms, as a being that somehow pays really close attention to us and all other individuals on the planet, they sense that blessings are a result of actions they have taken, thinking of them being doled out by this personal God according to some formula that they don’t fully understand but are sure is in play. A common refrain from some is that it was God, following their prayer of desperation, who helped them “find their keys,” healed their loved one, or perhaps led them safely home through a terrible storm. They will testify to this in a spirit of gratitude, certain that God was definitely the primary actor in such things. However, for many who hear their testimony of God’s particular care, such expressions that seem to move beyond “this happened” to why they were particularly gifted with this result bring up many questions: Why didn’t my loved one recover from their illness, be warned of an impending accident so they might not have been so badly injured, or worse, from what happened on the highway? Some become fraught with questions and frustration: So God cared about their keys being found just in time to make it to the important meeting—or the temple session they wanted to attend—yet doesn’t care enough to rescue others who are imprisoned in sexual slavery, who are murdered or raped or abused, who lose their livelihood from circumstances far beyond their own control? It all can make some stop believing in a God at all and, sometimes, at least for a while, imagining life is meaningless and everything that comes up in life is purely random. In this encore episode originally presented in July 2019, Susan Hinckley, along with host Dan Wotherspoon, explore the idea of blessings and the various ways people think and speak about them. In an effort to “seed” reflection, they explore notions and orientations to blessings like those things mentioned above, as well as reveal their own struggles with the evolution of their ideas about blessings in their own journeys. Are they something that are sort of “earned” by righteousness, or is there a more mysterious sort of calculus in play, such as that suggested by Elder Dale G. Renlund in a recent General Conference address when he proposed: “[Y]ou do not earn a blessing—that notion is false—but you do have to qualify for it.”? Or is a better way of approaching life’s various movements in terms of “grace,” a term for that which is given freely to all things and persons simply through the energies that create and infuse all life? Is that best approach found in the idea of “original blessing,” a concept that allows for both God and creation’s own mysterious work drawn from the story of Creation in Genesis 1 in which God creates and at each step of separation and differentiation declares it “good,” and, ultimately, after the creation of humans, pronounces the result “very good.” Please enjoy this discussion! May it stimulate wonderful reflection on this “close to home” topic!

Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others." -Marianne WilliamsonReferences...Dodgers (Joe Kelly) vs. Astros (Carlos Correa) shenanigansHoosiers Clip #1Hoosiers Clip #2Hoosiers Clip #3Allen Iverson "Practice" clipPhiladelphia Eagles Kobe MuralElder Dale G. Our ability to experience God’s love directly relates to how dutifully we repent, study the scriptures, and partake of the sacrament.

We think that the point is to pass the test or to overcome the problem, but the truth is that things don't really get solved. They come together and they fall apart. Then they come together again, and fall apart again. It's just like that. The healing comes from letting there be room for all of this to happen: room for grief, for relief, for misery, for joy.
