A Life of Meaning After a Bad Start in Chicago. Growing up in the South Side of Chicago is no easy path, and for Samia Young, the early chapters of her life were filled with violence, instability, and heartbreak. Born into a family plagued by substance abuse and domestic violence, she witnessed things no child ever should. Samia is the guest on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast, available for free on their website, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and most podcast platforms. “I had what many would describe as a tumultuous, abusive, and traumatic childhood,” Samia recalls. “There were days I truly didn't know if I'd make it out alive.” The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast promoted across their Facebook , Instagram , LinkedIn , Medium and other social media platforms. Her neighborhood was one of many that frequently made the news, as Chicago's South Side has long carried a reputation for crime, poverty, and struggle. For Samia, the dysfunction inside her home only magnified the challenges outside of it. “I would be lying if I told you that I always knew that I would make it out. That I never felt like throwing in the towel,” she admits. Look for supporting stories about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Medium , Blogspot and Linkedin . Life on the South Side To understand Samia's story, it helps to know the environment she grew up in. The South Side of Chicago is one of the city's three major sections and is geographically the largest. Rich with cultural history, diverse neighborhoods, and deep community ties, it is also an area marked by stark contrasts, where middle-class and affluent families live only blocks away from neighborhoods struggling with poverty and crime. Areas like Hyde Park, home to the University of Chicago, and Kenwood or Beverly are often considered desirable places to live. But other parts of the South Side, such as Englewood and Grand Crossing, have been hit hard by systemic issues, unemployment, and gang violence. These were the realities shaping Samia's childhood. A Life of Meaning After a Bad Start in Chicago. Available for free on their website and streaming on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other podcast platforms. “Growing up there, you learn to survive more than you learn to live,” she reflects. Hearing the Gospel for the First Time Amidst the turmoil, a flicker of light appeared when Samia was 14 years old. During one of the darkest seasons of her youth, she first heard the message of Jesus Christ. “The Gospel offered me a glimpse of hope,” she shares. “It was something that felt so far removed from my life, yet it stirred something deep inside me.” The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast episode is available for free on their website , Apple Podcasts , Spotify and most major podcast platforms. That spark, however, was not enough to erase the wounds of her childhood. As she transitioned into her teenage years and early adulthood, the pain she carried pulled her into cycles of instability. Poverty, brushes with the criminal justice system, and feelings of being lost became part of her reality. A Life of Meaning After a Bad Start in Chicago. “The wounds from my childhood made it difficult for me to truly know my identity and build the life I wanted,” Samia explains. A Turning Point at 24 Everything began to change at 24, when Samia had what she describes as a moment of clarity. Instead of letting her past dictate her future, she made a decision: to rebuild her life from the ground up. “It wasn't some overnight transformation,” she admits. “It was slow, painful, and full of setbacks. But it was also the most important decision I ever made.” The full podcast episode is streaming now on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and across Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Through perseverance, faith, and a relentless commitment to change, Samia began reshaping her path. She pursued education, steadied her personal life, and slowly replaced destructive habits with constructive ones. From Trauma to Triumph Today, Samia stands as a licensed attorney and business professional in Ohio. After moving from Chicago to Minnesota at 15, and eventually relocating to Cleveland in 2023, she has carved out a life that once seemed impossible. A Life of Meaning After a Bad Start in Chicago. Her transformation is not just about professional success, but about reclaiming her voice, her identity, and her future. Her story resonates across Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and beyond. “I want people to know that your beginning does not have to define your ending,” she says. “Yes, I started in trauma. Yes, I lost myself for a time. But I also found my way back.” Samia's Story in Print Her powerful story is captured in her book, Samia, Come Forth!—available through her website samiayoung.com. What does it mean to truly be seen and called out of our struggles? On Internship Commencement Sunday, Pastor Blake highlights the transformative journey of Christ Walk's summer interns, who have spent ten weeks in leadership and ministry development, learning firsthand the essence of serving God and each other. The impactful words of guest speaker Chris resonate deeply, as he recounts the story of Lazarus in John 11, emphasizing that Jesus not only sees our pain but enters into it with us—He weeps alongside us in our struggles. As the interns share their testimonies, it becomes clear that moments of discomfort and vulnerability have led to profound insights about leadership and ministry, reinforcing the church's mission to invest in young people. Chris passionately urges us all to recognize that our stories—however messy—can be sources of hope and transformation for others. He reminds us, "What story do you have that can change someone else's life?" With an invitation to shed our grave clothes and embrace our God-given purpose, this sermon is a powerful call to reflect on our spiritual journeys. Don't miss the opportunity to be inspired—watch or listen to this encouraging message today!

After the white smoke poured out of the Sistine Chapel chimney on May 8, we turned on the TV here at the Jesuit Conference HQ in Washington and landed randomly on ABC News. We immediately heard a familiar voice: It was Fr. James Martin, the Jesuit author who certainly needs no introduction to AMDG listeners. In addition to writing bestselling books like Come Forth about the biblical character of Lazarus and working at America Magazine and Outreach, an LGBTQ Catholic organization, Fr. Jim is a frequent commentator on the Catholic Church in the secular media. ABC news sent him to Rome to be part of the team covering the funeral of Pope Francis, the conclave, and the first moments of Pope Leo XIV's pontificate. Host Mike Jordan Laskey asked Fr. Jim on the show to share about his experiences in Rome this past month and to bring us behind the scenes. Fr. Jim also knows Pope Leo XIV a little bit, as they sat at the same table at the Synod on Synodality general assembly last year. He shared his impressions of the Pope and how he thinks he might be an agent of healing especially in the American church. Finally, Fr. Jim shared some of his memories of Pope Francis, who was a big supporter of Fr. Jim's ministry. We know you'll enjoy Fr. Jim's perspective on witnessing Church history in Rome this month. The goal of Jesus Christ was to scream into your grave, "Come Forth!" In our Good Friday service we rejoiced that Jesus has defeated death, he has raised the dead to be with him, and on Easter Sunday we rejoice in his victory over the grave. It is finished! He has done it!

Episode 86 of Messy Jesus Business podcast, with Sister Julia Walsh. In the return of Messy Jesus Business podcast, Sister Julia Walsh, FSPA talks with Fr. James Martin, SJ about his vocation, the raising of Lazarus, pilgrimages and Jesus' parables, and Fr. Martin's experience at the Synod. Podcast: Play in new window | Download Subscribe: Email | RSS | More A transcript of the show can be found here. Oftentimes people think [a call to vocation] really needs to be this kind of dramatic, you know, falling on your knees and having this light from heaven, you know, like Saul on the way to Damascus... But I think that the more common way that it happens is that it's an understanding a desire that is within you that that is a holy desire, to be coming from God. -Fr. James Martin, SJ Fr. James Martin, SJ ABOUT THE GUEST Father James Martin, SJ, is a Jesuit priest, editor at large of America, consulter to the Vatican's Dicastery for Communication and author of many books, including the New York Times bestseller Jesus: A Pilgrimage and The Jesuit Guide to Almost Everything. Jesus' primary purpose during His earthly ministry was to preach the Kingdom of God. Although He did perform miracles and cast out demons, His mission centered on proclaiming the good news of the Gospel. He moved from town to town, spreading the message of the Kingdom in synagogues, on mountainsides, and by the sea. As J.C. Ryle noted, "Until the time when He died as a sacrifice for our sins, His daily and almost hourly work was to preach." In our modern day, preaching is often undervalued; yet preaching is central to both our conviction of sin and our growth in grace. Through preaching, God enlightens, comforts, and sanctifies us, calling us to a deeper relationship with Christ. When we hear the Word of God preached, we encounter Jesus' offer to draw us closer to Himself!

Before he arrives as a glorified, resurrected being, great storms will rage. Thousands will be lost in the calamity due to their wickedness and abuse of the servants of the Lord. With these words, the resurrected Savior introduced Himself, fulfilling over 600 years of Book of Mormon prophecies. “That appearance and that declaration,” Elder Jeffrey R. September 23-29 How can you not be just thrilled with this week's readings? The entire Book of Mormon has been centered on one Person—Jesus Christ, the Savior and Redeemer—and His coming to the earth and the promised visit to this righteous branch of the tribe of Joseph in the Americas. Lehi testified He would come. Nephi saw in vision that He would come. Jacob gave bold witness of His mission and His coming. King Benjamin, Alma the Elder, Alma the Younger, Ammon, Aaron, Omner, Himni, Helaman—and many more—they all testified that HE, the Lord Jesus Christ, would come—and in this week's exciting readings—HE CAME!

The deacons have a great conversation with Jesuit Fr. James Martin, editor-at-large of America magazine, about his new book "Come Forth: The Promise of Jesus's Greatest Miracle." In the book, Fr. Jim takes a deep dive into the Gospel account of Jesus' raising of Lazarus from the dead. The deacons also speak with Fr. Jim about his service as a voting member at the Church's “Synod on Synodality,” the first session of which was held in October, 2023, at the Vatican. Happy Super New Moon in Pisces! I know, it happened on the 10th yet I'm recording this on the day of the Moon and feeling into that Pisces energy as well as the end of the year/wrapping things up energy. We do find ourselves at this Moon in the last sign of the Zodiac year. Pisces allows some space for swimming in the potential and exploring possibilities before we head into fired up Aries season ready to take charge and make moves as we leap into Spring and the new Zodiac year. On this Divine Feminine solo episode I share my take on the energies of this final New Moon of the year, a Super New Moon in Pisces. I offer some ways to embrace these last days of Pisces season and the 2023/24 Zodiac year and allow some free flowing, swimming in the void as we wrap things up and consider what the next year will bring. I also provide a little guided mediation and pull a Moonology card which are always timeless whenever you hear it.Moonology Oracle Cards: https://www.yasminboland.com/books/moonology-cards/Join the Women Waken Community on Instagram Here: https://tinyurl.com/522duz2c Feel free to reach out to me to see how we can work together and send your questions, feedback, and requests for future solo episodes here: Whitney Walker, LMFTLicense # 107082www.WomenWaken.comhttps://www.psychologytoday.com/profi...Whitney@WomenWaken.comIG: @WomenwakenYoutube: @womenwaken

In our ongoing pursuit of peace at the end of the year, Jen sits down with Father James Martin, one of America's most beloved spiritual leaders and a New York Times bestselling author. Known for his thought-provoking books "The Jesuit Guide to Almost Everything" and "Learning to Pray," Jen and Father Martin talk about the premises in Father Martin's new book "Come Forth, the Promise of Jesus's Greatest Miracle," which tells the iconic story of the raising of biblical Lazarus from the dead in a way we guarantee you've never heard before. If you've been in therapy for any time at all, you might have been advised to let go of things that don't serve you, and lo and behold, this ancient story of Jesus calling Lazarus from the tomb has wisdom and inspiration for today, and promises to leave you pondering on what you might leave behind in your own tomb for a new life. * * * Thought-Provoking Quotes “That's one of the reasons I write books to just say to people; being on a path is a human thing and you can read about it if you don't want to talk about it. Other people are going through it and have been through it way before you.” - Father James Martin “The Gospels should be disorienting. God wants to shake us up a little bit. And there's a great line from the Catholic activist and writer Dorothy Day that 'God comforts the afflicted but also afflicts the comfortable,' which I love, and it should be disorienting. It should shake us up. Jesus was pretty disorienting.” - Father James Martin "If you have difficulties with one or another way of interpreting the Gospels, you have to say, look-- Jesus constantly is with the poor. It's not ambiguous. 'Blessed are the poor.' I mean, you can't get any more blunt than that, but it's hard for us because it kind of challenges our status quo." - Father James Martin “Until we can let go of things that prevent us from loving God and getting closer to God, we won't be at peace as much as we could be.” - Father James Martin Resources Mentioned in This Episode The Jesuit Guide to Almost Everything by Father James Martin Learning to Pray: A Guide for Everyone by Father James Martin Transgender People Can Be Baptized Catholic Reuters Article Mary Karr The Seven Storey Mountain by Thomas Merton Jesuits Six Jesuit Martyrs in El Salvador WWJD (Wiki) Augustine of Hippo Come Forth, the Promise of Jesus's Greatest Miracle by Father James Martin Guest's Links Instagram Twitter Facebook Connect with Jen! Pope Francis has authorized priests to bless same-sex couples, stopping short of allowing full marriage rites. James Martin, SJ, a Jesuit priest, editor of Outreach, an LGBTQ Catholic resource, consultor to the Vatican's Dicastery for Communication, and author of Come Forth (HarperOne, 2023) and Learning to Pray (HarperOne, 2021), talks about the significance of this step and listeners share their reactions.
As we celebrate the season of advent, it's a wonderful time to focus on prayer. This dialogue with God can be an avenue leading us to tranquility by enabling us to articulate our deepest fears, hopes, and concerns. It provides an opportunity to let go and surrender our burdens. In the practice of releasing our worries, we open ourselves up to God's calming embrace of serenity. Father James Martin is a Jesuit priest who is a student of scripture, helping bring it to life for people in new ways. In his latest book called Come Forth, Father Martin explores the story of Lazarus and how understanding the context for Jesus' greatest miracle can have meaning for us as we strive to let go of things that no longer serve us, and have faith that Jesus can give us new life, just as He gave His friend Lazarus. After Father Martin walks us through the miraculous story of Lazarus, he brings a special message for us about the meaning of Advent as we celebrate this special time of year. Michael Freeland Miller is the founder and one of the senior leaders of UPPERROOM. In April of 2010, Michael and his wife started a small prayer meeting in an office space overlooking downtown Dallas. From that initial prayer meeting, God birthed a movement of prayer and worship that continues to grow globally. What do you want to let go of? What do you want to get rid of? What patterns, what behaviors, what addictions do we want to leave behind in the tomb to let die so that we can hear God's voice inviting us to come forth?” - Father James Martin “People feel so stressed at Christmas, and what is really a joyful holiday becomes sort of a burden. There's always this temptation at Christmas to want to do everything, visit every person, write every single person you know a Christmas card, buy everyone a gift, sort of go for broke when it comes to Christmas dinner. And I think doing less might be helpful.” - Father James Martin “What does it mean that God became human? What does that mean for me? What does it mean that God was human in the most vulnerable way possible? What does it mean that God would choose to be vulnerable and little and dependent on human beings, on Mary and Joseph?” - Father James Martin “Instead of being on Amazon all day and clicking for the next gift, trying to get the right thing—stressing out about it may not be as helpful as just five minutes of prayer. It's about balance, I think. And Advent enables us to slow down a bit.” - Father James Martin “God becomes human in order that we might relate to God better.” - Father James Martin “I died a thousand deaths to my various strategies and the resume that I had built up in ministry. And the Lord really stripped me in that season in discovering what it was like to build a church around prayer.” - Michael Freeland Miller “I think prayer is a means to God's presence, His spirit.” - Michael Freeland Miller “I find such joy in praying with God's people. I find it encourages my faith to listen to other people pray, and then I love to pray for them and then pray together.” - Michael Freeland Miller ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel! Fr. James Martin returns to the show to discuss his new book Come Forth.
This week on Unorthodox, we're marching together. Or are we? Our Jew of the Week is the comedian Modi. He joined us to talk about coming out to his mother about being a comedian, and why he's finding what he calls “moshiach energy” in being openly gay—and proudly Jewish. And returning to the show as our most gentilic gentile of the week is our friend and rabbi, Father James Martin, a Jesuit priest and editor at large for America Magazine. He joined us to talk about his work on LGBTQ issues within the Church, as well as his last book, Learn to Pray and the upcoming Come Forth. Join us June 22 for a special Unorthodox night on Broadway! We have a block of orchestra tickets for Leopoldstadt, starring our new co-host Joshua Malina, and after the show Stephanie and Liel will do a Q&A on-stage with Joshua.
