On today's episode we are joined by recurring guests Casey Sato and Johns Stevens. We go through four rounds of drafting from three categories: Celebrity, Athlete and General Authority. But here's the catch: they all have to have “Utah ties.” We explain it all in the episode and have a riot going through our lists of why we pick who we pick. Suffice it to say some of us didn't consider team chemistry in the process. Enjoy! Follow us! Sustaining of General Authorities, Area Seventies, and General Officers
In this episode we experience and discuss the very best and very worst of Brad Wilcox - a fantastic General Conference talk that would have transformed by experience as a youth but came 3 decades too late, and his nosedive into weak apologetics, sexism and racism in his infamous Alpine Tri-Stake Youth Broadcast. We also have some serious thoughts and fun with superstar Mormon historian Patrick Mason's startling suggestion that he and his academic peers should really be the ones running the Church and deciding its theology while the General Authorities concentrate on using their lawyer and Business Management skills to do the admin. And I have to admit that this is basically what has been going on for years already.
Trigger Warning: Talk of Suicidal Ideation In Part 3 of 3 Evan describes getting called as a Stake Counselor, his attempts to be an ally for LGBTQ individuals and his subsequent faith crisis. Evan has a few debates/confrontations with Area Seventy Elder McCune (higher than Stake Presidency in Mormon leadership) over his son. Evan emails Apostles and other leaders on how the Church the change to be more loving and accepting of LGBTQ members resulting in a meeting with General Authority Allen D. Haynie. Evan continues faith deconstruction when his wife begins her faith crisis and they both come to see the issues with sexism in the Church, with biblical scholarship opening up new issues and the family's ultimate decision to leave the Church. Evan Smith met the intersection of sexuality and religion while serving as an LDS Bishop and eventually in a Stake Presidency. It didn't take long before Evan began to better understand the difficult and impossible restraints the Church's policies and doctrines place on LGBTQ Mormons. In the midst of these dichotomies, Evan, and his wife, Cheryl learned that their own son, Weston, was gay. The Smiths learned that understanding and advocating for LGBTQ people takes a sharp turn when someone close to you is directly impacted by this topic. As a result, Evan and Cheryl became allies and advocates for queer Mormons, and Evan used his position in his Stake Presidency to directly discuss this topic with General Authorities and Latter-day Saint congregations. In this episode, Evan candidly shares his discussions with Church leadership, what his family has learned having a gay son, his current membership status in the Mormon church, and what we can all do to better understand the LGBTQ experience. Evan Smith is also the author of Gay Latter-day Saint Crossroads, a book he acknowledges was written to explain, and hopefully do something productive with the pain that comes from the church's teachings about sexual orientation and gender identity. The book also explores whether the church's current position on gay sexual behavior is more reflective of human prejudice than it is of divine truth. Evan also uses the book to try to make amends for any harm he caused in the past as a leader in the church. Evan Smith rose through the ranks of Mormon leadership ultimately becoming a Stake Presidency member. While serving as an LDS Bishop, Evan struggled with the Church's positions on LGBTQ+ issues and later found out that his son Weston was gay. Even after coming out, Weston decided to serve an LDS Mission as an openly gay man, leading him to high levels of depression and heartbreaking experiences during and after coming back early from his mission. Evan became an advocate for LGBTQ people in the Church. His position as a Stake Presidency Counselor led him to a few confrontations/discussions with General Authorities and a later meeting at Church Headquarters where they discussed Evan's progressive beliefs on LGBTQ matters. Join John and Gerardo as they interview Evan and his son Weston about their fascinating Mormon Story. This is part 1 of a 3-part story. In this episode Valerie sets the stage for a detailed analysis of a report compiled by a team of highly talented Latter Day Saint scholars in various professional fields endeavoring to help the General Authorities of the Church better understand the nature of the current suffering of so many multi-generational LDS church members in faith and trust crises. This episode is the first of a five part series that will go deeply into all key aspects of this study and serves as a general overview covering why the study was performed, who performed it, a timeline of the development of this report, what they desired to communicate, how they tried to communicate it with church headquarters, and the reception this report received from the general leadership of the LDS church. This episode also breaks down what each of the following four episodes in the series will cover. Buckle up...this report is both fascinating and tragic in its ability to articulate the depth of the problem we as a church are facing. It also offers brilliant solutions. ** **Due to the rapid growth of this podcast and the obviously huge need for members of our faith to have more support in our faith-expansion experience, Valerie is currently piloting a few 3 month long weekly online support groups to help you connect with her and others who are in a similar place in your faith experience. Space is limited and first come first served. 20 people per group. For more information e-mail Valerie at info@Valeriehamaker.com. Facilitated by Valerie. Space is limited. Wirthlin. In this series, Greg shares with us more of his own journey in the Church including: Greg's mission experiences, many made more difficult by knowledge of his relationship with Elder Wirthlin What Greg learned at Weber that began affecting his testimony How often General Authorities miss out on family activities and events in service to the Church How the Church deals with aging apostles once they begin to lose lucidity How Greg lost his LDS testimony in spite of descending from the Mormon "elite," and what led him to want to tell his story. Also, Greg shares his opinion on whether his grandfather actually "saw" Jesus Christ as an LDS apostle. We hope you enjoy!!! Episode Show Notes ===== Mormon Stories Thanks Our Generous Donors! Join us for Part 1 of our 2-part interview with pilot Greg Gerritsen - grandson of the late and much believed Mormon or LDS Church apostle Joseph B. Wirthlin. In this series, Greg shares with us many fascinating stories about his experiences with his grandfather including: The tendency of LDS church members to overly worship General Authorities, along with the unhealthy obsession some Mormons have with "access" to General Authorities. The undying love Elder Wirthlin had for his wife (Elisa), his family, and for football. The extent to which nepotism, cronyism, and patronage play a part in the selection of LDS church General Authorities. The downsides/sacrifices of being an LDS church Apostle/General Authority. The existence of divisions and "cliques" in the LDS church quorum of the 12 Apostles. The unhealthy pressures and expectations put on the children and grandchildren of LDS General Authorities, that often lead to a familial emphasis on "public appearance" over healthy relationships. The "code" that exists within families of LDS General Authorities to never do or say anything to bring dishonor to the family name or church, including speaking out about a loss of faith, which leads many descendants of LDS apostles to lie about and/or hide their loss of faith. How the Mormon church handles LDS apostles when they start to experience dementia. How Greg lost his LDS testimony in spite of descending from the Mormon "elite," and what led him to want to tell his story. Also, Greg shares his opinion on whether his grandfather actually "saw" Jesus Christ as an LDS apostle. We hope you enjoy!!! Episode Show Notes ===== Mormon Stories Thanks Our Generous Donors! In this episode we finish analysing what Brad Wilcox said in his online fireside Sunderland, England Stake hosted before launching into his Alpine Tri-Stake Disaster, and the rehabilitation that made everything worse, in the following episodes. I also do my best to keep up with developments in the shocking exposure by Associated Press reporter Michael Rezendes, whose 'Spotlight' investigative journalism opened the can of worms of abuse coverups in the Catholic Church, as he takes a flamethrower to the same systems of cover-up and failing to protect children it knows are being harmed going on the the LDS Church. The long overdue day of reconning has finally come. We also hear from 3 brilliant podcasters I admire sharing powerful insights and wisdom, and we discover that the Church is still up to the same old tricks reediting film of General Authorities speaking that it inflicted on Elder Ronald Poelman in actual 1984. It's a bumper edition as the Mormon Civil War rages on - so much to keep up with!
In this episode we spend some time dipping into the Covid Lockdown online fireside Sunderland, England Stake hosted with my favourite kosher LDS apologist, historian Patrick Mason, as a contrast to the approach of Brad Wilcox and other General Authorities and apologists like him. Patrick talked a lot of sense, addressing directly the trust-threatening issues that drive people out of the LDS Church, and he only told one massive lie. In the world of kosher LDS apologists, this is absolutely as good as it gets! We also hear directly from the FBI about what they think of the particular vulnerability naively trusting Mormons have to the rampant affinity fraud in their communities, and the LDS Church in the UK that 5 generations of my family have given sweat, blood and tears to build up reaches a genuinely historic landmark of accelerating decline in precisely the place President Nelson has chosen for a new temple.
We examine the fascinating era of the 1970s feminist Mormon history studies. We focus on the central figure of Claudia Bushman and her push to build a non-existent world within Mormon studies. A group of east-coast women scholars began publishing controversial history in the form of Mormon Sisters and the resulting Exponent II quarterly journal. The official church historian, Leonard J. Arrington, encouraged and assisted where he could, but the General Authorities, especially Ezra Taft Benson, Mark E. Petersen, and Boyd K. Packer, couldn't handle the prospect of women scholars publishing in academic journals about Mormon women's issues. The retaliation, blacklisting, and PR fights quickly followed Claudia Bushman, Marueen Ursenbach Beecher, and Laurel Thatcher Ulrich as they worked to advance the burgeoning field. After that we review the movie/book Hidden Figures and discuss the new White House Press Secretary! Latter-day Saints sometime speak of a "Mother in Heaven". But most know little about her. In honor of Mothers everywhere, on this Mothers' Day, in this episode of Religion Today, host Martin Tanner gives a thumb-nail sketch of ancient Jewish belief in a Hebrew Goddess, Early Christian belief in a Heavenly Mother and the origins and belief of a Mother in Heaven in LDS belief, as explained by General Authorities and others.
