The morning of June 12, 1962, alarms sounded at the federal prison on Alcatraz Island when guards conducting a head count came up three inmates short. In the prisoners' beds were decoy heads that bought the men enough time to escape the supposedly inescapable prison known as The Rock. The trio -- Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin -- had used handmade tools to dig tunnels and craft makeshift rafts to brave the cold and turbulent waters of the Pacific in their bid for freedom. It is an enduring mystery whether Frank Morris, and brothers John and Clarence Anglin, escaped from Alcatraz prison on June 11, 1962. It is widely believed that they succumbed to the waters of San Francisco Bay, though no trace of the men has ever been found―only their makeshift raft. In this reexamination of the escape and its aftermath, Ken Widner presents compelling evidence that his two Anglin uncles did in fact survive and eventually made their way to Brazil, where they married and had children―evidence which corroborates the stories he heard about his uncles while growing up. Widner and Mike Lynch make a strong case for the Anglin brothers' survival using official government documents showing how mobster Mickey Cohen may have been involved in their escape, revealing letters from fellow inmate Whitey Bulger, and recorded testimony from the person who facilitated their escape to Brazil. In addition, there is a 1975 photograph of the brothers in Brazil which has overcome all challenges to its authenticity by skeptics. Join us for a fascinating deep-dive into Bay Area history. THE LAST ESCAPE OF JOHN & CLARENCE, THE ANGLIN BROTHERS & FRANK MORRIS Its a story of greed, sex, lust, gangsters, strippers and a group of prisoners who were tired of being prisoners. Escaping from THE ROCK as it was called was no small feat. But Frank Morris, John Anglin, and Clarence Anglin were no ordinary prisoners. They were cunning, smart and determined to beat the Rock known as Alcatraz the Inescapable. And so they did and the rest as they say is History. Or is it? I've said on this show many times, real life is far stranger than anything any writer could ever make up.  ALCATRAZ: THE LAST ESCAPE by Ken Widner and Mike Lynch tell the story you DIDN'T know about the men who made the history books. Fred Brizzi - Michael Dyke, the last Deputy Marshal assigned to the case, said Brizzi was "a drug smuggler and a con man," and was suspicious of his account of the Anglin Bros. Brizzi's widow said that she never heard him mention seeing the Anglin brothers in Rio, and that he was “a con man” who was prone to making up stories. Nightmares of the Americas: Indigenous Tales

Let's get in to part 3 of Alcatraz, in this episode we go over the start of the federal prison, the notorious inmates, and the close of the prison.  Alcatraz, often dubbed "The Rock," began its journey as a federal prison in 1934. Its location on a desolate island in San Francisco Bay made it an ideal site for housing some of the most notorious criminals in American history. The prison was designed to hold prisoners who caused trouble at other penitentiaries or were considered extremely dangerous.Notable inmates included the likes of Al Capone, the infamous Chicago mob boss, who served time for tax evasion. Another was George "Machine Gun" Kelly, a notorious gangster. The Birdman of Alcatraz, Robert Stroud, although famous for his bird studies, was actually incarcerated at Leavenworth and never kept birds while at Alcatraz.Alcatraz was characterized by its stringent security measures and the belief that it was inescapable. Despite this reputation, there were attempts to escape, one of the most famous being the 1962 attempt by Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers. They crafted dummy heads to fool the guards and managed to escape through tunnels but were presumed to have drowned in the bay during their getaway. The prison faced deteriorating infrastructure and escalating maintenance costs, leading to its closure in 1963. The isolated island prison was deemed too expensive to maintain and had lost its efficacy as newer, more advanced facilities emerged. After its closure, Alcatraz gained notoriety as a tourist destination and a symbol of America's criminal justice system. Alcatraz Prison was touted as an unescapeable prison.  The worst of the worst were sent there.  In 1962, however, Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin, were serving a stint there when they worked out an escape plan.  After seeing to all of the details, the big night eventually came.  They were discovered missing from their cells the next day.  Though nothing has been proven one way or the other, many believe that their escape was successful and they lived the rest of their lives on the run from the US Government.Sources for this episode:Wikipedia - San FranciscoWikipedia - Alatraz IslandHistoricTalk - The Incredible True-Life Story Of The Fantastic Escape From AlcatrazFBI - Alcatraz EscapeNational Park Foundation - A Genius, Two Brothers, and Fake HeadsIndependent - Their families insist they survived.  Investigators doubt it.  The enduring mystery of the three missing men of AlcatrazUS Marshals - Frank Lee MorrisAlcatraz History - Facts & FiguresAlcatraz History - Famous Alcatraz InmatesWikipedia - June 1962 Alcatraz escape attemptSupport the show

The following is a list of historically famous prison escapes, and of people who escaped multiple times:John Dillinger was a notorious bank robber who operated throughout the Midwest during the Great Depression. He broke out of the Allen County Jail in Lima, Ohio by having his gang pose as officers and infiltrate the prison. Only a few months later, the gang was re-captured when the hotel they were staying in caught fire. He was incarcerated while waiting to stand trial for the murder of a police officer in a bank robbery. On April 29, 2022, Alabama murder suspect Casey White managed to escape Lauderdale County Jail aided by correctional officer Vicky White (no relation). The two were captured in Evansville, Indiana on May 9, 2022. Vicky died hours later that day from a self-inflicted gunshot wound suffered just prior to capture. On 10 June 1977, the convicted murderer of Martin Luther King Jr., James Earl Ray, escaped from Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary in Tennessee, along with six others. Ray was recaptured after two days. He had been running and hiding in the mountainous forest surrounding the prison. On 30 December 1977, serial killer Ted Bundy escaped from prison while most of the guards were off for Christmas. He did so by sawing through the vent of his cell with a hacksaw blade, ending up in the chief jailer's apartment (who was away on Christmas break). He then stole some clothes from a closet and left the building. Earlier in June he escaped from a courthouse by jumping out a window in the court's law library. In 1244, whilst imprisoned in the Tower of London, Gruffydd ap Llywelyn Fawr crafted a makeshift rope made of bed sheets and cloths, lowered it, and climbed down. However, because he was heavy, the rope broke and he fell to his death.[Japanese prisoner Yoshie Shiratori broke out of prison four times, first from Aomori Prison (1936), Akita Prison (1942), Abashiri Prison (1944), and Sapporo Prison (1947). A novel and TV-drama Hagoku was based on his true story. In the Alcatraz escape on June 11, 1962, American criminals brothers John and Clarence Anglin, and Frank Morris escaped Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary on Alcatraz Island using an inflatable raft, never to be seen again. It was never determined by the FBI whether they succeeded in their escape or died in the attempt.

Rolf Hut is a hydrological scientist from Delft University of Technology. Or perhaps he's better described as MacGyver scientist, attacking problems from different and interesting angles. One such problem was the infamous 1962 escape from Alcatraz, in which inmates Clarence Anglin, John Anglin, and Frank Morris escaped from Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary, by tucking papier-mâché versions of their heads into their beds, escaping their cells through the ventilation ducts, climbing through an unused utility corridor, across roofs and over fences, before leaving the island on an improvised inflatable raft made of rain jackets. Rolf helped build perhaps the most sophisticated model of the currents in the bay area on the night of escape to look at the question of whether the inmates could possibly have survived the journey, and then tested the research in his own Mythbusters-esque escape from Alcatraz. June 11, 1962. San Francisco, California. 35-year old Frank Morris, 32-year old John Anglin and his 31-year old brother, Clarence Anglin, attempt an elaborate escape from the Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary on Alcatraz Island. After sneaking out of their cells during the night, the three convicts enter the water in order to cross San Francisco Bay on a homemade inflatable raft, but an extensive manhunt fails to find them. While the authorities are inclined to believe the escapees drowned, certain pieces of evidence, including a photograph that was allegedly taken of the Anglin brothers in Brazil in 1975, suggest they might have survived. In Part One of our special six-anniversary episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we shared the basic facts of the Alcatraz escape. To commemorate “The Trail Went Cold” reaching its six-year anniversary, we are covering what is probably the most famous unsolved prison escape of all time, which has not received a definitive conclusion after nearly 60 years. This story will be released as a special two-part episode and this week, Part 1 will outline the basic facts and details of the Alcatraz escape. Special thanks to listener Vanessa Maez for narrating the opening of this episode. If you have any information about this case, please contact the U.S. Marshals Service's San Francisco office at (415) 436-7677.
