Joshua Maddux, an 18-year-old from Woodland Park, Colorado, vanished on May 8, 2008, after going for a walk. A bright, creative teen who loved nature, he seemed happy despite the 2006 suicide of his brother. After five days, his family reported him missing, but searches yielded nothing. In August 2015, his body was found in the chimney of an abandoned cabin near his home, upside down in a fetal position, wearing only a shirt, with his clothes folded inside the cabin. The coroner ruled his death an accident, suggesting he climbed in and got stuck, dying of hypothermia or dehydration. However, the cabin owner claimed a grate blocked the chimney, making entry impossible, and the coroner noted two people would be needed to place the body there. Rumors point to foul play, including a tip about Andrew Richard Newman, a convicted murderer seen with Josh, but no evidence supports this. The story of Joshua Maddux's death is nothing short of bizarre. He is often referred to as “the boy in the chimney” due to the circumstances of his passing. 18-year-old Josh would go missing from his home in 2008 after saying he was going for a walk. Seven years would pass and there would be no sightings of Joshua and no real indication of what may have happened to him. Then, a horrific discovery would be made when the owner of a nearby cabin smelled something foul coming from his chimney. Joshua's body would be discovered wearing only a shirt, with the rest of his clothing found neatly folded in another area of the cabin. Investigators had no idea how he had gotten into the chimney - if he had climbed in by his own free will, was forced in or thrown in later. His death was ruled an accident. But there are several factors, including a strange Reddit post, that would lead many to believe Joshua's death was a murder. To this day, there is no clear indication of how Joshua died in the chimney of that cabin. Back again this week with another true crime case for you, and like most of them, this is rather strange one. It involves 18 year old Joshua Maddux, an outdoorsy kid who enjoyed a good hike through the woods in his hometown of Woodland Park, Colorado. However, one day during one of these walks, young Josh never came back home. There are quite a few oddities with this one, starting with the fact that it took his dad five days to report him missing, then we have the seemingly incompetent coroner who was adamant that the death was accidental, and that Josh put himself in the situation in which he was found. What situation might that be? Well, how about folded nearly in half, in the fetal position, stuffed inside of a chimney in a cabin roughly two blocks from his house. Oh, also, when he was found he was wearing nothing but his t-shirt, with the rest of his clothes, including his socks and shoes, folded neatly inside the cabin. Final note here, he was found seven years after he went missing, even though he was so close to home. You may wonder why I call the the coroner incompetent? Well, he insisted that Josh went inside the cabin, stripped down to his t-shirt, went outside, climbed down the chimney head-first that had metal grates installed to keep animals out, and got himself stuck, while folding himself in half. Yup. There's a lot more that makes this case weird and suspicious, but you'll just have to listen to the whole thing in order to get the scoop. Joshua Maddux went for a walk and never returned home and was missing with no trace for 7 years. Joshua Maddux was born on March 9th, 1990, and he went missing in 2008 and seven years later, was found in the chimney of a cabin just two blocks from his home. The question is, how did he get there? When Joshua's body was found 7 years later, there were some very odd things about it... namely that Joshua was found in the fetal position but with his legs over his head. Eventually, on the 28th September 2015, after failing to find any rational cause, Al Born made a ruling of “Accidental Death”. And he suggested that Josh had climbed down the chimney and become lodged in the brickwork. He concluded the most likely cause of death was Hypothermia, as the temperature around the time of his disappearance had dropped to -6 Celsius at it's coldest.
