In this episode, Fred interviews John, who shares multiple chilling encounters in the Alaskan outdoors that suggest the presence of Bigfoot. John's experiences span from the early 1970s to 2017, including strange vocalizations, eerie campfire encounters, and sightings of large, hairy beings. Additionally, Fred recounts a recent encounter shared by Richard and Samantha in Hope, Alaska, involving unsettling surveillance and aggressive behavior from an unknown creature. Another tale describes Brian and Derek's terrifying trip near Cordova, where they were harassed by a mysterious screaming entity. These stories contribute to the growing ledger of Bigfoot sightings and encounters in Alaska, urging listeners to stay alert when venturing into the wilderness. Summer safety tip: if you see a racoon acting drunk during the day, avoid it (and probably call Animal Control). This week, Hannah tells Katy about the legendary Mad Stone that might be able to help you if you ignore that advice, and get bitten by a rabid animal. The girls talk about werewolves, science, more reasons to distrust birds, vaccination efforts, and what to do if you wake up to find a bat in your room. The tangents are plentiful, but the story is a fun one (plus, free medical advice!) While we covered Louisiana last season in our Small Town Getaways journey, we didn't quite look at the state through the type of lens we do today. For this Local Lore & Legends episode, we dig into the best Louisiana urban legends to ever be told. Louisiana already has a level of mystery to it, whether it's the voodoo culture or the swamplands. And with both the culture and land type, certain stories have swirled for years, creating a spectacular set of Louisiana folklore that must be heard.Louisiana Urban Legends We'll Cover Where Did The Grunch Come From? Have you ever stood on the train tracks and looked down the rails into the darkness, hoping to see the mysterious light everyone says sometimes appears? Have you seen the light yourself? This week, Hannah tells Katy about the Maco Light (a true Local Lore for these NC-based podcasters), and the other very similar stories featuring a gruesome train mishap, and a headless ghost wandering around with a lantern. The girls talk local geography (spoiler: there's a Maco and a Macon in NC, and a Chapel Hill in TN), swamp chemistry, which came first: the telegram or the taxi, the merits of sleep masks, and plenty of train puns! We're getting back to our roots (literally and figuratively), and we hope you'll come along for the (train) ride! So pour your drinks, and join us for this tale of Local Lore! Deep in the heart of Appalachia, there's a legend of a pale race of cave-dwelling people, who only come out at night, and who may or may not have been driven to extinction. This week, Hannah tells Katy about the Moon-Eyed People of Appalachia (thank you Amanda, for the suggestion!). The girls talk problematic white history, blind Pelicans, gay whales, genetics, Welsh pronunciations, and whether or not the Moon-Eyed People actually existed (and whether they still exist today!) It's a great follow up to the Giant Skeletons episode (ep. 199) and the whacky history white settlers tried to impose to justify colonization; plus a few fun facts about Indigenous Americans and their very long, rich history. What's the most exotic meat you've ever tried? Gator sausage and scorpion have nothing on this episode. This week, Hannah tells Katy the legend of the Demon Butcher of Palos Park, and the horrifying (and stomach-turning) truths in it. The girls revisit a few cannibals from Ep. 24, find a great movie recommendation, and dive headfirst into how the sausage was made back when our great grandparents were buying it from the grocery store. This one is a bit of a roller coaster, both in that the "stories" vary wildly, and in that it might make you puke. In 1989, they say a demon broke the fiery bonds of Hell and escaped through a hole foolishly dug by mortal humans trying to reach the center of the earth; that demon would flit about restlessly until it finally came to rest inside the tiny infant body that would become your favorite podcast cohost: Katy. That story might not have made the rounds on the internet in the 90's, but a similar one did: Russian geologists, in their bid to reach the earth's mantle (and gain the title of "world's deepest hole") inadvertently broke through into a mysterious cavern, nine miles below the surface of the earth, and to their horror, heard the screams of thousands of damned souls burning in a lake of fire. This week, the girls will discuss what's fact and what's fiction in this spooky legend, and as always, leave you with some solid facts that might scare you almost as much as the prospect of Hell bubbling just nine miles under our feet. Be prepared for childhood religious trauma, geology facts, and lots and lots of jokes about "deep holes" because apparently this podcast is run by 13 year-old boys. Get the sunglasses and the Holy Water, and strap in for a deep dive (get it?) into this tale of Local Lore!Sources: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-deep-is-the-deepest-hole-in-the-world/https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/kola-superdeep-boreholehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kola_Superdeep_Borehole#Researchhttps://skeptoid.com/episodes/4307https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/news/apr17/dwh-protected-species.html#:~:text=Marine%20mammal%20researchers%20concluded%20that,in%20the%20Gulf%20of%20Mexico.https://www.americanprogress.org/article/the-lasting-impact-of-deepwater-horizon/https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/the-well-to-hell/https://www.smithsonianmag.com/travel/giant-hole-ground-has-been-fire-more-40-years-180951247/https://worldcrunch.com/what-the-world/eternal-flame-fallshttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baba_GurgurSupport the showFollow us @thetaleswetellpodcast on Facebook and Instagram, or thetaleswetellpodcast.comSupport us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/join/thetaleswetellpodcast?Click here for merch!

As we dive deeper into Season Two of the podcast, we're focusing on Local Lore & Legends state-by-state. However, this week we're taking a detour in order to really learn about cryptids, cryptid culture, as well as some cryptid backstories. It's Wednesday evening and you need to grab like two things from the store (and maybe a coffee or a cute candle) and you really don't want to deal with the Walmart crowd, so where do you go? Around here, it's a no brainer: Target. BUT before you head out the door, think twice about the relative safety of that glowing red oasis; or more specifically, of the parking lot. This week, Hannah dives deeeeeeep into her personal inbox for a chain email from 2009 warning of the dangers of Target parking lots and new ploys by criminals to lure unsuspecting victims to harm. Katy gets to read said chain email, plus a bonus email at the end, and the girls talk about real life Target abductions and whether or not this newest "lure" is at all practical. It's not the least bit spooky (sorry), but it will get you thinking and it might just keep you a tiny bit safer (stop balancing your checkbook in your car, GIRLS!) In today's episode we explore four spooky stories and local legends from the Appalachian region in honor of the autumn season and the atmosphere of this time of year. Who's that tall, blond, pale girl between the ages of 12 and 30, standing in the corner of the dance hall acting kind of gloomy and not talking to anyone? It could be Katy (although she'd likely be talking to you about any number of her current hyperfixations and/or her kid or dogs), or, if you're in Justice, IL, it could be the infamous specter, Resurrection Mary! This week, Hannah tells Katy about the ghostly gal that haunts the streets, cabs, and dancehalls of Justice, and her possible tragic backstory. From why on earth she chose the disco era to make her return to dancing, to what drink choices you might offer the local spirit, and all that's in between. It's part Local Lore, part Spooky Story, and all in good fun. So pour your drinks, grab a blanket, and join us for this week's tale! Trick or treat, smell my feet, give me something good (and not poisoned) to eat! It's officially fall, which means it's time to start planning your costume, stocking up on candy, or mapping out your trick or treating route! And this week, in the spirit of the holidays, Hannah tells Katy about the pervasive Halloween myth that everyone seems to have heard in one form or another: that you'd better check your trick or treating candy before eating it, because bad people put razor blades, needles, poison, and more in the treats they give out to children. Is it true, or just a Halloween trick? Join us as we look back through the very few instances in history of tainted Halloween candy, and find out what/who you should really be afraid of (spoiler: it's not strangers with candy this time.) It gets a little rough at times (because people are the worst), but if you hang in there with us, you'll make it October 31 well informed, and well prepared. So pour the drinks, break out the flannel shirts, and settle in for this spooky tale of Local Lore! Michelle Cox - the author of the Henrietta and Inspector Howard series - talks about how her spunky, sleuthing, sexy character Henrietta is based on a real woman. We're talking about book 5 in the series - A Child Lost - where multiple story lines of crime and passion weave together. It's easy to pick up the threads even if you're new to Henrietta's adventures. And, while there aren't any cliff hanging loose ends, you will find clues to draw you to Book 6, which is coming out this fall. You'll hear us talk about the book's theme of lost children and the way poetry worked its way into this 1930's story. You'll also hear a few minutes from the audiobook narrated by Jayne Entwistle - an Audie Finalist - A Voice Arts Award winner - known for her work on book series - who you might have also seen acting in television shows like The Good Place. Thanks to Brooke Warner at She Writes Press for connecting me to Michelle. If you'd like to hear more - please look for the audiobook of A child Lost on Libro.fm - I found all 5 of the Henrietta and Inspector Howard books in Libro.fm's library - as well as more than 80 books narrated by Jayne Entwistle. Can poltergeist activity really destroy a building, or is it just local lore? When objects started moving of their own accord on a Welsh farm, it was assumed an evil spirit was at work. But following a botched exorcism there was no stopping its destruction, which including first destroying the contents of a building, followed by the building itself. Could this all have been the work of a single poltergeist, or was there something else at work? A local folk tale claims the property is cursed and, with the curse seemingly coming true, many assumed that it was more than a coincidence. For all of the terrifying details, join author Mark Rees (Ghosts of Wales) as he explores the real-life case of the evil spirit on the Ghosts and Folklore of Wales podcast. What is the Ghosts and Folklore of Wales with Mark Rees podcast? In early 2020, Mark Rees launched the world's first podcast dedicated to Welsh ghost stories, folklore, myths and legends. By combining his unique research and insights from many books and articles with long-lost tales from dusty old tomes, this weird and wonderful podcast takes a fascinating look at the country's countless curious subjects. New episodes are uploaded every Thursday and feature everything from real-life encounters with pesky poltergeists to fantastical beasts from the Mabinogion and the skulled-headed Christmas favourite herself, the Mari Lwyd. Fifth in the Henrietta and Inspector Howard Mystery Series, A Child Lost (She Writes Press, 2020) begins in 1935, with Henrietta's younger sister, Elsie, falling in love with Gunther, a German refugee. He has come to America to locate Liesel, the mother of a little girl he's been caring for, and has been working in maintenance at Elsie's school. Elsie begs Henrietta and Clive to help find Liesel, which leads to the old Dunning Asylum on Chicago's north side. The little girl, who has been having epileptic fits, is also spirited away to the horrible place. Henrietta and Clive brave filth and chaos to get her out, but Henrietta later realizes that everything wasn't as it seemed. Meanwhile, Clive is assigned to investigate a spiritualist living on the north shore, who might be robbing people of their valuables. It seems like a boring case until Henrietta starts falling for the spiritualist's visions. Today, I have the pleasure of interviewing Michelle Cox. Michelle is the author of the multiple award-winning Henrietta and Inspector Howard series. She also writes Novel Notes of Local Lore, a weekly blog dedicated to Chicago’s forgotten residents. Her books have been praised by Kirkus, Library Journal, Publishers Weekly, Booklist, and more. It’s highly possible that Michell may have once lived in the 1930s and, since time travel has yet to be invented, she has resorted to writing about the era as a way of getting herself back there. She is a lover of board games, period dramas and big band music. Also, marmalade. In this episode Michelle and I discuss: How her experiences working in a nursing home influenced her novel. Her method for writing societal issues revolving around wealth, women’s roles, and mental health. Her decision to use She Writes Press and what sets them apart from traditional and self-publishing. Plus, her #1 tip for writers. For more info and show notes: diymfa.com/348
Have you ever seen a windowless white van on the streets and regarded it with suspicion, even though it was probably a day laborer doing odd jobs and needing a large space for his various tools? Did your mother (or teacher, coworkers, aunt, etc.) ever warn you against parking next to a windowless van because someone could just open the doors and snatch you? Have you ever seen that scene in Silence of the Lambs where Buffalo Bill lures a woman into his van by getting her to help him move a couch? If you said yes to any of these, then you definitely need to hear this episode, because at least one time in history, these rumors were based in tiny bit of horrify and sadistic truth. Join us as Hannah tells Katy about the Toolbox Killers--Lawernce Bittaker and Roy Norris--who drove their creepy van around in 1979, abducted countless women, and tortured/killed at least five. The girls are drinking a hodgepodge of red wines and whiskey, so you know it's going to get dark. Pour your own, and dive into the twisted history behind this Local Lore. I’ll also ask Cox about Novel Notes of Local Lore, her weekly blog dedicated to Chicago’s forgotten residents, and why she’s such a fan of thirties-era Chicago. Cox suspects she may have once lived in the 1930s and, having yet to discover a handy time machine lying around, has resorted to writing about the era as a way of getting herself back there. Milford House Mysteries Hosts - Sherry Knowlton is the author of the Alexa Williams series of murder mysteries including Dead of Autumn, Dead of Summer, Dead of Spring, Dead of Winter, and Dead on the Delta (releasing February 2021). Joan (JM) West is the author of the Carlisle Crime Cases series including Dying for Vengeance, Courting Doubt and Darkness, Darkness at First Light, Had a Dying Fall and Things Strangled.
In this episode, Rumpel and Frog explore some local lore from the hills of their hometowns in Connecticut. Rumpel does some research on the Makiawisug (aka Little People). Meanwhile, Frog tells some local legends about a vagabond called Leather Man and the infamous Farmington resident (from back in the day) Will Warren. If you love hiking the local trails and exploring the many trap-rock dens that Connecticut River Valley has to offer, you will love hearing about these two unusual men who were said to inhabit those spaces. After our storytelling, we turn our attention to all the tastes and treats of this bountiful season. Rather than forage for stitching patterns, this time we look into indigenous recipes, local farms, and heirloom flavors to celebrate the season in true locavore fashion. Michelle Cox is the author of the award-winning Henrietta and Inspector Howard book from the A Ring of Truth fantasy series. She is also the author of the Novel Notes of Local Lore blog, which tells the story of forgotten residents of Chicago. In this interview she will talk about the relationship with your publisher and your publicist and the importance of having both while still maintaining your budget. She will also go a bit in depth with her amazing career so far, especially after learning about hybrid publishing, while also sharing great nuggets with us: Writing takes a lot of maturity, you can’t write a novel until you are at least 40 years old (understand why and where this comes from on the interview); Your book must have a solid bone structure on which to hang its organs. The arc of the book is very important; Finding a good publishing partner is very important but you as the author has the biggest role in your own success; And finally build your platform, whether it is through blogging, public speaking, guest posting, social media, email list building or anything else; just build it up!
