When movies first came out they were focused on one basic thing. Telling a story without words, just emotions. And for the most part this worked, you even got movies like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, which told an amazing story with a powerful shocking twist at the end, and hey that film was silent! Some people in the early 1900’s even got inspired by other people’s work and tried to make their own version of it. This happened first in 1904 with a small film called “The Great Train Robbery”. It happened a few other times since then but nowhere else noteworthy as films very quickly realized they could expand on their stories and create more films that continued the narrative. The film “The Fall of nation” followed up it’s 1918 prequel “The Birth Of A Nation” in 1919 giving Hollywood it’s first ever look at a sequel. Now sequels didn’t catch on right there and then. They gained a little traction but kind of got forgotten about when sound entered cinema and we started getting cult classics like Citizen Kane and Gone With The Wind. These types of movies then got overshadowed by colour with the release of The Wizard of Oz. Finally now people had freedom to tell whatever story they wanted however they wanted. And with special effects starting to enter the world and continuing to grow and improve each day movies continued to provide something new and exciting for years to come. Now we get to the 1970’s and sequels start to pick up their traction all over again. Now they’re getting huge and everyone’s on edge waiting for the next big Star Wars, Jaws, and if you were in Japan you were most likely anticipating the next Godzilla movie. Godzilla first released in 1954 and got ahead of the sequel game before the 70’s. But when sequels really picked up Godzilla got even bigger, as it told this long crazy narrative for years to come. But in 1984 the film “The Return Of Godzilla” would change everything. This Godzilla movie would take fans back to the beginning and ignore everything and anything else that has ever happened in the creatures long cinematic history. This idea that you could take something super popular and just restart it with a clean slate and still make money off of an old franchise or film stuck with Hollywood. And now 45 years later as Disney has now announced another “new” version of one of their beloved children's movies, we have decided to talk about the ongoing plague that is REMAKES.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/tfcc)
