It's that time of year again where we reveal the winner of our annual summer box office wager. Amir has taken the crown since the 2023 inception of this standing contest among hosts. Will he do it again this year? Or can Derek or Jeff finally win one? We discuss the movies of the summer: surprise hits, dark horse picks, and the biggest disappointments. Plus, a brief recap of the Emmys.
✦ From a memorable guest appearance in the hit TV show "Atlanta" to a leading role in the slasher "I Know What You Did Last Summer," Atlanta resident Tyriq Withers has spent the past three years skyrocketing into one of Hollywood's most desired newcomers. Now, he's taking on his most anticipated role yet in the upcoming Jordan Peele-produced thriller "Him." Withers plays Cameron Cade, an aspiring professional football player who, after a week of training with his childhood sports idol, realizes the price of fame and the sacrifices required to be considered one of the greatest of all time. City Lights Collective member Kenny Murray spoke to the young star about his acting journey and what viewers can expect from the film. ✦ Going to Brunch in Atlanta can seem like a sport. Even if you know some tricks for navigating the notoriously long lines, the cost can sometimes price people out of the game. In our mini-series, "Brunchin' on a Budget," we look at a few special Atlanta Brunch spots that can help you keep your wallet intact. Today, for the final installment of the series, WABE arts reporter Summer Evans takes us to Eat My Biscuits in East Point. ✦ National Food Service Worker Day is September 25, and the new Atlanta-made Horror/Comedy, "We're So Dead," is premiering just in time. Food service workers primarily produced the film through a crowdfunding campaign and opening night proceeds benefit The Giving Kitchen. City Lights Co-host Kim Drobes has more. ✦ Musical scores enrich the content they surround and help create the mood and tone of films, television, and even video games. Dr. Scott Stewart has been studying and teaching this aspect of music for decades, and he joins us occasionally for Music in Media. In this segment, he breaks down the sounds behind some of entertainment's most popular offerings. Today, he talks about the scores of this past season of Summer Blockbusters. ✦ We love hearing from our artistic community In Their Own Words. This is where they tell us who they are, what they do, what they love, and a few things you might not see coming. What things? Who knows, there's only one way to find out. Today, we hear from Atlanta artist Eddie Farr. ✦ What does it mean to reckon with your past and the place you call home? John T. Edge, the Emmy Award-winning host of "TrueSouth," documents his attempts to do just that in his new memoir, "House of Smoke: A Southerner Goes Searching for Home." Out now, the book offers an unflinching look at his successes, failures, and the complicated stories he inherited from his family and the South. City Lights Collective member and "Bookmarked" contributor Alison Law recently talked to Edge ahead of his upcoming Georgia appearances.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

And that's a wrap – of the Summer. Which means the big blockbuster season, lasting seemingly for ever, is over for another year. However, we couldn't let this moment pass without having our say on some of the key movies of the hot months. For this discussion we have unleashed Graham, Jeff and Phil to do the honours. Phil of course watches just about everything with the other two rather in his wake. We made sure that for the main four films included in this review, all three lads have cast their critical gaze over them. Only four films I hear you say? Look, at our combined ages getting to see even four was pushing it! But seriously, we wanted to focus on four of the hits and try to remain positive. In fact, it's all so positive Jeff and Phil hardly disagree on this show! So what are the four films: F1: The Movie – Apple finally have a monster hit on their hands, but in amidst all the sports cliches and the stunning IMAX visuals, is it any good? Jurassic World: Rebirth – Forget the end of the last movie, a new dinosaur age is about to dawn. Are we all dinosaured out or does this movie bring fresh thrills to old fossils? Superman – The Man Of Steel is back, this time under the auspices of James Gunn and new Superman star David Corenswet. Just how does it compare to the Zack Synder films and Rochard Donner's 70's classic? Fantastic Four: First Steps – Speaking of Superheroes returning with new actors and a new premise. Marvel promises that this one is different – is it? And as an added bonus, Phil and Jeff discuss (spoiler free) **Weapons**. Needless to say Graham won't watch it unless someone pays for his dry cleaning! Was it a great Summer? Box office takings may have been down and there may have been too many sequels or reboots, but was the all-important quality good? We will give you our answer in the show. As always please tell us what you think. For now, we are getting our notebooks out for the Fall (Autumn) season. Watch out for us scribbling At The Flicks. Bye for now.

Beth and Rick chop it up about our favorite summer films, more specifically about our favorite blockbuster faire in these dog days when the chill of the theater (or our living rooms) is a welcome reprieve from the midday sizzle. Is a great blockbuster merely defined by commercial success and dollars and cents? There may be more to it than the gross. One thing we agree on is that summer is a great time to enjoy action on the big screen as well as surprise and sleeper hits. We try to cover all the flavors and levels in that cinematic blockbuster snow cone, to get to the bottom and find the gum ball. Have a listen, stay cool out there. Comments are open.

Send us a textAs promised, this week on episode #109 of "Fabulous Film & Friends we're going to weigh in on the two big ticket super hero extravaganzas from the Summer of 2025: James Gunn's Superman starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Skyler Gisando, Wendell Pierce, Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Sara Sampaio and Nicholas Hoult up against The Fantastic Four: First Steps directed by Matt Shakman and starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss Bachrach, Joseph Quinn, Julia Garner and Ralph Ineson. Returning for yet another daringly detailed deep dive into the world of fantastical four colored fantasies is nephew to a comic bookstore Kingpin, author, teacher and hypnotherapist, Joe Field. Before we blast off into the Ultra-Negative Zone, the synopses: In 2025's Superman, it is 3 years into his mission and Earth's Champion, The Man of Steel has met his match in Lex Luthor who causes a distraction with a giant monster and breaks into Superman's secret Fortress of Solitude where he translates a message from Superman's parents in which they instruct their son Kal El –Superman's Kryptonian name-- to take over earth and spread his seed. Using this jarringly awkward info to turn public opinion against our hero, Luthor has also made a clone of Superman called Ultraman who continually batters and beats the Man of Steel into submission. On top of that, Luthor has a Pocket Universe where he jails his enemies including his ex-girlfriends. And Lex has Ultraman place Superman in a cage with another a super powered being named Metamorpho who can weaken Superman by turning his hands into Kryptonite. Ultimately, Luthor's cruelty overwhelms Metamorpho who helps Superman escape the pocket universe but it in doing so, the unstable dimensional rift threatens to swallow Earth. It is only with the help of scrappy reporter Lois Lane and a team of heroes called The Justice Gang that Superman that is able to beat Ultraman, Luthor and close the rift. There's also some political stuff going on with two made up countries going to War because of Luthor's manipulations. In The Fantastic Four: First Steps it has been four years since Reed Richards, Sue Storm, her brother Johnny and Ben Grimm were transformed by cosmic rays into the world's protectors, super stretchy genius Mr. Fantastic, The Invisible Woman, The Human Torch and the rock man known as The Thing who are biggest celebrities on the planet. The exciting news that team leaders Reed Richards and Sue Storm are expecting their first child is put on the back burner by the arrival of the Silver Surfer the herald of the planet eating Celestial known as Galactus. Galactus tells the Fantastic Four that he will spare Earth in exchange for their yet unborn child, but that his too high a price to pay. With the public opinion against them, and world watching nervously, the team springs into action and devises a incredible plan to teleport planet earth into the far reaches of space. But then the Surfer and Galactus arrive and put the kabosh on the plan so the FF amends the plan to send Galactus himself into the far reaches of space, which seemed like the better strategy to begin with. So which movie was dumber and more suitable for booger eating six year olds? Find out!Watch to the video podcast on Youtube:https://youtu.be/cZCszsepEVM

Forrest, Conan Neutron, Kristina Oakes and Alex @devilsadvocateproductions talk about Steven Spielberg's Jaws!! It's the 50th Anniversary of Jaws which was finally released after multiple delays in June 1975. Becoming the first movie to ever be delayed at Universal Pictures 100 extra days in production and cost $5 million extra dollars. Spielberg believed his career was over when he was through filming. Jaws was the first major motion picture actually filmed in the ocean rather than a freshwater lake or a studio tank. And, with a massive merchandising push from Universal and advertising push, it became the first Summer Blockbuster starting a tradition that still happens today!!

Can you name the highest-grossing summer movie from any year between 1975 and 2024—without Googling? In this wildly entertaining episode of The Ben and Skin Show, the crew dives into a high-stakes, laugh-packed game of cinematic trivia that spans nearly five decades of summer blockbusters. Hosted by the ever-clever Kevin “KT” Turner, the game pits Ben Rogers, Jeff “Skin” Wade, and Krystina Ray against each other in a battle of movie memory, pop culture instincts, and hilarious guesses. The Rules Are Simple, the Stakes Are High: Pick a year, guess the top summer movie. Get it right on the first try? Three points. Need a hint? That's two. Still stumped? One point if you can pull it together. And yes, it gets intense.
Somewhere around the mid-1970s, Hollywood studios realized that the summer months were the perfect launching point for their most-expensive, highest-profile projects. With kids out of school, families needed something to do. The prestigious Oscar-bait timeframe was half a year away. And people welcomed an opportunity to get out of the sun and into a dark, air-conditioned room to watch grown men get eaten by dinosaurs whilst using the toilet, and countless cars exploding for no discernible reason. Billions of dollars have been made by summer blockbusters, and even a few awards have ben won by them. So for the first of our 2025 Summer Specials, we want to look back at those mega-grossing pictures and try to determine the best Summer Blockbuster Film of all time. Movies discussed: Jurassic Park, Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Ghostbusters, Grease, Shrek, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, The Dark Knight, The Lion King, Twister, Barbie, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jaws, Independence Day, Iron Man, Back to the Future. Join host Eric Rezsnyak and GPCD panelists Karissa Kloss, Kate Racculia, and Michael Schwarz as they discuss 16 of the most-loved, most-successful movies of all time. Play along at home by finding the listener bracket here. Make a copy for yourself, fill it out, and see if your picks match up with ours! Fifty years ago Steven Spielberg's Jaws was released in theaters, kicking off the summer blockbuster phenomenon. And you know a summer blockbuster when you see one: It's a film that's hugely popular and as a result, financially successful, and seen by lots of people. But not everyone has seen every last one of them. Today, we fill in some personal blockbuster gaps, and finally see a movie that absolutely everyone saw, except for us — including Armageddon, Beverly Hills Cop II, Ghost, The Fast and the Furious.Follow Pop Culture Happy Hour on Letterboxd at letterboxd.com/nprpopculture Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
