It's been 2 years since we've had a complete slate of summer blockbusters to look forward to, and it looks like this time they will finally come out on schedule, and not be delayed again (or again, again, in some cases). So with the return of some normalcy, so too comes the return of an old tradition, The Summer Movie Wager (which is a game run by the folks over at The Film Cast, and which we owe 100% credit of this idea). Julian and Rachel each prepared a list of 10 movies (and 3 dark horse picks) from the slate of summer movie releases and attempt to correctly predict their box office performance (ranked 1 - 10). Join them as they discuss their picks, why they placed them where they did in their ranking, and some general wholesome movie chat goodness. Tune in again at the end of the summer as they break down the winners and losers, but until then, make sure to get out there and enjoy Blockbuster Season!

'Hobb and Shaw' is plenty stupid, but it also made plenty of money in its first weekend, earning $180 million around the world ahead of its Chinese opening in a few weeks. Though its budget is a hefty $200 million, it should benefit from limited blockbuster competition until September. We're into the middle of August now, which means that we're hitting a weird middle ground between the summer and awards seasons. Many smaller and independent movies will come out in the next few weeks, but which will become successful? Since JAWS was released in 1975, summertime has always been known to movie lovers as "Blockbuster Season". But with diminishing box office returns, exhausted film franchises pushing out 5th and 6th sequels, and more people staying at home for a night of Netflix, we're starting to wonder, is the age of the Blockbuster coming to close? To get more insight Rob and Geoff sit down with film writer Adam Nayman (The Ringer, The Globe and Mail). The three talk about the origins of the "modern summer blockbuster" (4:50), wonder if the summer films of 1984 will stand the test of time better than 2016(13:25), and discuss why "franchise fatigue" for tent-poles like TRANSFORMERS, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, and SPIDERMAN, might be a big part of the problem (17:45). They also get into why virtually every superhero movie seems to be immune to financial failure (25:25), and make their picks for a 2017 film that could snap us out of this drought and make blockbusters fun again (31:10).

What movie will take the summer box office this year? Will it be “The Legend of Tarzan”? “Captain America: Civil War”? Or will it be “Finding Dory”? In the summer of 1975, Steven Spielberg’s “Jaws” broke all kinds of records and the Summer Blockbuster was established. May marks the start of Hollywood’s busiest season – so grab your popcorn as Pop Culture Confidential takes a look at the Summer Movies with Ben Fritz, reporter for The Wall Street Journal. “Jaws” is still credited as the first Summer Blockbuster, earning $14 million in its first week – incredible numbers at the time. Since then “Star Wars”, “Jurassic Park”, “Top Gun”, and “Batman” have been just some of the huge summer hits for this all-important Hollywood season. This summer we look forward to “Tarzan”, “X-Men Apocalypse”, the Ghostbusters reboot, and the return of Dory in “Finding Dory”, Pixar’s sequel to the 2003 hit “Finding Nemo” and much more!
