The #whatshesaidproject began as a local story slam and being reborn as a virtual story slam and podcast. Real stories told by real storytellers right from their phones.
Shannon Ivey, of the #whatshesaidproject, talks about the work of the project over the last year. From her: I decided to not participate in Midlands Gives this year. Why? I live in a capital city, and I know the hard work of my nonprofit peers. I know the cuts they are facing. Us, too, actually. When budgets are cut on arts grants and other funding agencies, we lose work, too. We lose funding sources, and yet the work continues.AND THEN...I got a call yesterday from the community foundation in the area, and they told me how important our work was.How we were seen and valued. How, thought I am a white female founder, how prioritizing marginalized/equity seeking folks with our programming meant the world to them. If I had been less caffeinated, I would have cried. So, I did an audit of what we (we = me and Melanie McGehee, with support from lots of other folks) had done with the #whatshesaidproject over the last year.Wanna see what I found? It's quite a bit. Scroll through. And, if you have any tiny amount to support our work moving forward, know it will be used to directly benefit folks in our community. We need 100 people to give any amount between today and May 6th to be in the running for a cash prize. Are you one of them? Please donate using one of these two methods:Up until May 7: https://www.midlandsgives.org/organization/whatshesaidprojectAfter May 6th: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=34HAKESVDQVFL&source=qr

Ok Fine. Shannon Ivey finally agreed to tell a story from her pandemic experience. Beyond being in a statistic of mothers who had job loss due to child care obligations and shifts in the workforce during the pandemic, her realization was a deeply personal one. Here's she discovered FOR SURE about herself and her kid during the pandemic. This is our last story of this spring, but we will be back in the fall with a new Story Slam (or something fun). As always, thank you so much to the South Carolina Arts Commission for supporting me with a Quarterly Artist Grant to support this work. It means the world.
This Episode with Pamela deals with life and death, grief and wakeup calls. She didn't know it, but she is on the pain point of one of the biggest life questions you can be asked. She's a new storyteller, but her wisdom and advice is expert level. Enjoy. Thanks again to South Carolina Arts Commission for their support of Virtual Story Slams!
Jess is a storyteller, theatre artist, and all around creative love bug that brought us a story about hanging out with herself during the pandemic, and what she found out. Thank you Jess. Thanks to the SC Arts Commisssion for their support of this Spring Virtual Story Slam!

Jessica is having none of it. With good reason. I mean, she WANTED to, then...something broke. We hear you, Jess. Thank you for modeling it so...artistically for us. In our second episode of the Spring 21 Virtual Story Slam focused on women's pandemic realizations, Jessica Green Thonen sends us a CLEAR message (and a really gorgeous reminder). Thanks from the #whatshesaidproject to the SC ARTS COMMISSION for a Artist Project Support Grant, which is supporting this work. FMI: linktr.ee/whatshesaidproject
Thanks to the generous support of the South Carolina Arts Commission, we are bringing back the popular Virtual Story Slam! This spring, on the one year anniversary of the COVID shut down, we asked women some questions: -What did you learn about you during COVID? -What did this time mean for you? -How did you make it through? Not unsurprisingly, we got back a LOT of responses. So, until they are tired of talking about it, we will release these stories. We never tire of listening. #stories #storyslam #virtual #podcast #women #genderexpansive
