Born in the small town of McGehee, Arkansas, Trent Montgomery has grown into a dancer, teacher, and drag queen with a long list of accolades. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Performance and Choreography from the University of Arkansas and a Master's in Performance and Choreography from Florida State. While living in Florida, he performed with The Tallahassee Ballet and served as the Associate Artistic Director at the Ballet Arts Conservatory of Tallahassee. In Arkansas, he has worked as a dancer and teacher with the Arkansas Festival Ballet, and continues to foster a love of dance through education. Trent's current claim to fame is his membership in Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, a world famous, gender-skewing, comic ballet troupe that parodies the conventions of romantic and classical ballet. In the 19th century, ballet came to be dominated by the ballerina, with plots and choreography that highlight flowery, feminine forms. As such, the ballerinos of Les Ballets Trockadero draw a lot humor from performing en travesti, every member taking on both male and female roles.
"The Friend" had its world premiere at the 2024 Telluride Film Festival, where it received positive reviews for its performances from Naomi Watts, Bill Murray, and the Great Dane Bing, and the writing and direction from filmmakers Scott McGehee & David Siegel that made audiences laugh and cry. Based on the 2018 novel by Sigrid Nunez, the film tells the story of a New York City writer who reluctantly inherits a Great Dane named Apollo from her dearly departed friend but soon comes to realize it may be the best thing that's ever happened for her in order to move on from her grief. McGehee & Siegel were both kind enough to speak with me about their work on the film, which you can listen to below. There is scant scientific evidence that compounds found in nightshade vegetables—such as tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, and eggplants—aggravate the pain and inflammation of arthritis. However, some people with arthritis feel that eating nightshades make their condition worse...and decades of research by a horticulture professor at Rutgers University may explain why. Listen in this week as Dee dives into the science behind the connection and examines whether nightshades truly contribute to inflammation and joint pain. References:Childers N.F., & Margoles M.S. When people talk about what it takes to succeed, a lot of things come up. Motivation, drive, persistence and skill are all important, but one thing that's highly underestimated and underutilized is humor. We might not think making someone laugh can be a gamechanger in business. The truth is, people are more likely to trust us, buy what we sell and listen to what we have to say through humor. It might not be something we're taught, but anyone can learn how to be funny and add some lightheartedness to our communication and even our training. What can the most talented actors and comedians teach us about scripts? Why is grit so critical to our success? In this episode, I'm joined by author, speaker, thought-leader, coach and trainer, Les McGehee. He shares why humor and comedy are the things that propelled him to success. He also talks about how we can infuse what we do with some humor and levity. The Realtors and comedians we admire have learned so many scripts and structures that they just flow through them. -Les McGehee Three Things You'll Learn In This Episode -The power of grit, persistence and humor In school we were taught how to write, read and count. What were some of the missing pieces of our education? -What went well and why The world operates on a negativity bias. We're more focused on our weaknesses, but our strengths are what pull us forward. How do we change how we see things? -What great actors teach us about scripts A lot of training in real estate is around scripts, but why do we need to take it further than just memorizing words? Guest Bio Les McGeehee is an author, speaker, thought-leader, coach and trainer. He has presented at thousands of events across the U.S. and internationally, both as an entertainer and as a leader helping clients and their teams grow, develop, and prosper in business. I'm the president of Rialto Academy—a hub for business training, education, and coaching—where I've led custom programs for the Jack Welch Management Institute, J.P. Morgan Chase, AT&T, University of Texas, Dell, Baylor Scott & White Health, and many other major companies. I'm the author of the book Plays Well With Others, and the co-creator of the original The ONE Thing Trainer Certification program based on the bestselling book, The ONE Thing, by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan (in fact, in 2015 and 2017 our training team was named the #1 training organization in the world among all industries by Training Magazine). One angle for tackling the nationwide teacher shortage is the funding and implementation of teacher corps programs, which train educators in supportive cohorts to transition into teaching. Freda Calloway is one such graduate from the Arkansas Teacher Corps, which prioritizes placements in rural areas. Freda now teaches English and Journalism in a rural high school in McGehee, Arkansas. We'd like to thank our partners at Rural Community Alliance and Arkansas Teacher Corps for jointly leading the Rural Schools Collaborative Arkansas & Delta Regional Hub, where Freda is based. The middle of a desert may be the last place you'd find a brewery, but it's the best place to find a drink. Except, in this desert, there is a vast mix of cultures, affluence, and a complicated relationship with alcohol. My next guest has navigated through the challenges to create a brewery with a taste of the Middle East. If beer is a representation of culture, can we rely on beer to be the ambassador between cultures? Can the fusion of flavors guide our way as we find a peaceful and joy-filled existence? This may be too much to ask of a beer, but I'm grateful for breweries like Side Hustle for giving us hope. We find great experiences at the intersection of craft and culture. These are the stories of us, of great food and the beer that brings it all together. TRIGGERWARNUNG: Explizite Gewaltdarstellung, Gewalt an Frauen Liebe Mordies! Join us as we discuss the complexities of Jonestown, the tragic end it came to, and what came before. Fielding M. McGehee III is the principal researcher for the Jonestown Institute, where he manages tape transcripts, Freedom of Information Act requests, primary source documents, and general inquiries on questions concerning Peoples Temple. He may be reached at fieldingmcgehee@yahoo.com.You can find the Jonestown Institute at https://jonestown.sdsu.edu/For those that haven't heard of Jonestown here is a brief intro from the Jonestown Institute: “Jonestown” is a word with several meanings. First, it refers to an agricultural project established by the Peoples Temple, a religious group based in California which immigrated to Guyana in the mid-1970s to establish an agricultural utopia. Second, it refers to the events of 18 November 1978 in which a U.S. Congressman was assassinated, along with four other individuals, at a jungle airstrip in South America. These tragic killings were followed by the mass murders and suicides of 900 men, women, and children by ingesting potassium cyanide mixed into a vat of fruit punch and tranquilizers. Finally, the word “Jonestown” has been used to describe any New Religious Movement which may or may not have the potential for violence, as in “Heaven's Gate was another Jonestown.”
When the body of Kathleen McGehee was discovered on Halloween, 2011, there seemed little doubt of who murdered her. But was it an act of rage, or resentment, or was the killer driven by more malevolent forces?
