After going from a strong, moral upbringing in Southern Oklahoma to a drug-related downfall that had him facing federal prison, Bobby Newman understands what those who are addicted feel and think. That's what enables him to cut through the resistance and manipulative tactics of an addicted person and help them choose life and recovery. In the eighteen years since he completed a long-term drug rehabilitation program, he has educated more than a hundred thousand youth on the dangers of drug abuse and helped thousands of people with drug or alcohol rehabilitation. Many of those he helped with their addictions as a substance abuse counselor, now many more as a drug intervention specialist. Now, his focus is on doing interventions that turn situations from tragic to hopeful. When Bobby walks into a room full of family who have asked for help, he knows exactly how to cut through the emotion and confusion and establish ground rules to make the intervention a success. A successful intervention is so much about preparation. He'll work with the family to ensure they have chosen a good rehab and cut off all avenues of evasion so their loved one has only one choice ahead of them — start rehab right now. When Bobby arrives, he has only one intention and that is getting that person in the doors of an effective rehab facility. His clear intention resonates with the family and gives them a boost in confidence and strength. Finally, they feel like this is going to happen, they are going to be able to save this person they love — this person they have feared they were going to lose. Is it hard for you to accept help from others? In John 13, when Jesus was washing the disciples' feet, Peter was like, “No way, man.” He may have been ashamed of his grit and grime, or he may have felt like he had the right answer… I shouldn't let Jesus wash my feet! But Jesus said, “Unless I wash you, you have no part of me.” Jesus' actions and His words remind us that - Being connected to Jesus and His mission, begins simply with receiving from Him, not achieving for Him. The world tells us that we have to work hard to earn love, to earn our way to approval, to clean up before we show up… but the opposite of true with Jesus. We are invited to receive first so that we can share that foot-washing, meet you in the mess kind of love with others. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/carly-bartlett/support

Host Racquel Williams talks to two people from the Philadelphia region who have been helping victims of the conflict. Immigration attorney, Cathryn Miller-Wilson, the Executive Director of HAIS Pennsylvania, an immigrant-assistance organization in Philadelphia, clarifies that most of the Ukrainians here are not legally designated as refugees, but have entered the U.S. through a complicated sponsorship program. Some episodes ago, clarity sisters Barb and Cali gave us thoughtful advice on asking for help. In this episode, they take the topic a step further by diving into productive ways of receiving help. Many of us like to grit our teeth and act like we've got it all handled, but in those moments when you know you need a helping hand, how well are you able to actually receive it? Do you micromanage the help you're given? Are you specific about what you need? Are you kind to yourself or do you judge yourself for needing some assistance? This is a juicy topic that can help you learn how to turn to your community when you need to, and accept their help with gratitude for them and for yourself.

*Formerly Everyday Nonordinary* Welcome to Integrating Psychedelics, featuring insights gleaned from psychedelic experiences and conversations around how to integrate this wisdom into our daily lives. I'm your host, Jenny Weinar, and in today's episode I'm speaking with Mary Sanders, LCSW. Mary Sanders is a committed licensed clinical social worker, psychotherapist, and social justice advocate. Mary's goal is to explore the depths of transgenerational trauma and peel off the layers of oppression so that we can relate to our true self. Mary's experience is working with Black, Indigenious, and People of Color (BIPOC), 2SLGBTQIA+, veterans, immigrants and refugees from Iraq and Syria, and foster youth. Mary is committed to treating trauma, certified in Trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and is a somatic experiencing psychotherapist in-training. Additionally, Mary is a trained psychedelic-assisted therapist from California Institute of Integral Studies' Center for Psychedelic Therapies and Research, MAPS, and Ketamine Training Center. Mary is founding board member of the People of Color Psychedelic Collective and works towards collective healing and justice for Black, Indigenous people, and People of Color within the context of psychedelics. Mary integrates her extensive training and lived experience in her private practice, EMPATH Center and social work role at Veteran Affairs' homeless programs in San Francisco, CA. I loved this conversation with Mary and could have kept talking for hours. In this episode we discuss: How Mary's longtime interest in altered states of consciousness led her to psychedelics as a way of exploring past traumas and attachment wounds How altered states of consciousness support us in confronting uncomfortable sensations in the body The corrective emotional experience that comes through asking for and receiving help in medicine circles How licensed providers in the psychedelic space can learn from underground and indigenous practitioners The role of psychedelics in both pleasure and healing, and the significance of this particularly for Black and Brown communities Singing and dancing as psychedelic integration practices that help us explore the full range of self-expression Carrying the lesson of asking for and receiving help in the medicine session out into other areas of life How modeling asking for help to others can deepen our relationships The need for greater representation of marginalized identities in the psychedelic space ...and more! You can connect with Mary through her private practice and through the People of Color Psychedelic Collective on their website, Facebook and Instagram pages. You can connect with me on Instagram, however I'm actually trying to transition away from social media a bit (not entirely) - so your best bet is to sign up for my newsletter where I'll share occasional reflections and updates on services I'm offering. So how do we appropriately accept and even at times elicit help from others without becoming that freeloader we all despise?Well our guests today were given a lesson, or better said six little lessons, in how to give and receive help when in less than four years they went from a young married couple with no kids to parents of six and they had to learn how to be willing to receive help in order to just keep things afloat and, later, the value of returning the favor. Dallin & Alyssa McEwen's story began when they were 12 years old leading them to finally be in the same place at the same time in college. They've been married for 8 years. The first year spent playing college sports and the next two spent trying to grow their family. After a successful first round of IVF they had twin girls join the crew. 18 months later came what they believed to be the biggest surprise of their life when their little boy was born. But then a year and a half later, they got pregnant with triplets!  If you're still doing the math that's 6 kids in 3 years. As they say, their life is busy and chaotic and filled with love, giggles and a lot of diapers. They wouldn't change their circumstance for the world, but instead have jumped two feet in to making the day to day not just manageable but enjoyable. On the show today we discuss the following:Who are Dallin & Alyssa and what do they do (4:08)How they have 6 kids ages 4 and under (5:43)What is life like? (10:17)How structure helps Dallin & Alyssa thrive (12:51)Learning how to allow others to serve them (14:35)Dallin & Alyssa's annual ritual that keeps their lines of communication open (20:57)How they make time for each other every day (25:53)How Dallin uses the financial pressure of life with 6 small kids to make him better professionally (29:33)How Alyssa became an Instagram Influencer (38:16)How Alyssa handles social media trolls (44:08)How Alyssa balances being authentic and protecting her children (46:36)What does it mean to them to be a Contender (51:52)How to learn more about Dallin & Alyssa:Dallin's LinkedInAlyssa's Instagram (alyssa_mcewen)Additional Books, Individuals, or Items Discuss in the show:Marriage Communication Book: For All Eternity by John L. How to Accept and Receive Help with Linda Burhans Most caregivers usually take their role out of love and with good intentions. Some of them will not ask for any assistance and may even refuse it when it is offered. It can be challenging to understand why they would choose to do it alone, rather than ask for support. In this week's episode, Dianne A. Allen talks about how you can accept and receive help, with her special guest, Linda Burhans, CEO of Connecting Caregivers Coaching & Resources. Part One of ‘How to Accept and Receive Help with Linda Burhans’ The opportunity of being a caregiver isn't just for those who help their clients make and keep appointments with doctors, provide or arrange transportation, and serve as a companion for their clients.  So many people make it sound so arduous, but it's merely so much more than that. You're either a caregiver or somebody is going to be taking care of you. If you're caring for a child, a spouse, a parent, or anyone else, that makes you a good caregiver. “Surround yourself with people who bring joy into your life.” – Dianne A. Allen (23:23-23:28) Sometimes, people's pride and not wanting to tell somebody what's on their plate can get in the way for them to seek help. If somebody doesn't know what you're going through, they can't step in and support you no matter how expert they are. Part Two of ‘How to Accept and Receive Help with Linda Burhans’ According to a study by the University of Pittsburgh, sixty-five percent of the caregivers over the age of sixty-nine are dying before the person they're taking care of. Because they don't visit the doctor that much, they accompany someone to the doctor.  Sometimes, they don't eat right because they make sure the people they're taking care of are eating right and on time. They don't get enough sleep because they're too busy watching over someone get a good sleep. “Asking for help is evidence of self-awareness and strength.” – Dianne A. Allen (32:17-32:27) Caregivers are the ones who are genuine about helping you; they want to laugh with you and help you find solutions and ideas because there are solutions for everything. Unfortunately, some people don't realize that they need help too. Remember that it's okay to ask for help and receive assistance because it's a sign of strength. More Information About Linda Burhans Author, Speaker, Radio Show Host, Linda Burhans is ever awed by the strength, resilience, and commitment of the caregivers she meets and seeks to remind them that they are not alone. Help is available and it is okay to accept that help. Caregivers that seek to take on everything on their own often decline in health. The most important thing she teaches is that caregivers need and deserve the time and space to take care of themselves. Whether you read her books or meet Linda in person, you will quickly realize that she truly lives by her mission: “To acknowledge and appreciate all caregivers as they care for those who can not care for themselves. It is my intention to empower the caregiver, ease their burdens and help them find the joy in the journey through education, comfort, and support”  Please join us Saturdays at noon on WTAN 106.1FM or 1340AM in the Tampa Bay Area. Well, hey there! I am so excited to share today's episode with you. If you're new to the podcast, my name is Sheena Walenta and I started this Mama Motivation podcast to help women and mothers everywhere design the life that they deserve and live a life with more joy and less overwhelm. Today's episode is about asking for help when you need it and learning to receive help. visit us at www.MamaMotivation.com for a free weekly planning journal.I believe many of us don't know how to do that. Believe it or not, at one point I didn't know that burnout wasn't mandatory. I really felt like the harder I worked, the better I was doing in my career and as a mother and a wife and I followed into that goofy myth that says, "You can do it all." And the reality is you CAN'T do it all. And most women don't do it all. Remember that old saying, "It takes a village to raise children"? It really does! So why has motherhood become so isolating in recent years? That's a rhetorical question, because motherhood shouldn't be isolating and we shouldn't have to do it alone.I had a friend come visit from Saint Louis a couple year's back, and we were sitting and having dinner. Her name is Gena, and she had small twin girls at the time and she's also an orthodontist. And I had two little children at the time too. And I was like, "Gena, how do you do it all? You have this successful orthodontic practice, you have these twins, you look like you're thriving. You guys look like you're so happy. I can't barely get dressed or get to work, you know, how do you do it all?" And she looked at me and she said, "I don't, I have help."I said, "What?! I can barely get dinner on the table and grocery shopping is a nightmare. . ." And she looked at me and she goes, you go grocery shopping?" And I was like, "Yeah, I go grocery shopping." And she said, "No, you need to get your groceries delivered."Ya'll, it had never dawned on me that I could ask for help or outsource services that I didn't have time to do myself. It's interesting because she was one of the very first women that really came forward and said, "Look, I'm a career woman, I have children, that's a lot. I'm pulled in a lot of different directions so I don't do it all. I get help. I have my groceries delivered. And I also have someone to help with the kids." So over the last couple of years, I've learned to ask for help. And how to receive help. You don't need to be at a certain level of income to get help. You could ask your partner for more assistance, ask your mom, your sister, or a friend. Do a trade with you neighbor to carpool some days, or do a play date trade. Let go of the myth that you have to do it all, and accept a little help here and there. --- Let us know how we are doing --Thank you for Listening! In our last episode I started an interview with Dr. Ed Schein, Sloan Fellows Professor of Management Emeritus at MIT and author of fourteen business books, including The Corporate Culture Survival Guide. Make sure to listen to that episode if you happened to miss it. {loadposition content_amazonHelping}In this second part of the interview, we turn our attention to Ed's seminal yet highly practical book entitled Helping: How to Offer, Give, and Receive Help. Ever wonder why some people find it difficult to ask for help, even when they are "spinning their wheels" with the project tasks? Or why some people just won't take you up on offers to help, even when it's desperately needed? In this interview Ed helps us understand the surprisingly complex dynamics around giving and receiving help. I strongly recommend you get a copy of Ed's books we discuss in these two episodes. I invite you to join me next time when I interview Dr. Allen Cohen, author of the acclaimed book Influence Without Authority. Part of the complexity of projects today relates to the fact that many of us have the responsibility to deliver the projects yet don't have authority over all the people we must depend on. Increasingly project success depends on relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders, and our ability to influence those people—even when we don't have authority over them—is critical. I look forward to sharing that interview with you. Thanks for checking out our new podcast website at www.peopleandprojectspodcast.com. I invite you to let me know what you think about it! It happens regularly... my phone rings, I pick it up, and on the other end I'm talking with someone who's inquiring about bringing us in to deliver a keynote for a company event or training for their organization.{loadposition content_amazonCorpCulture} My first response is not whether I'm available on the dates they're looking for. My first questions are designed to help me understand the problems they're trying to solve. Once I have a good sense of the issues they want to address, I inevitably ask a critical, open-ended question: "Tell me about the culture of your organization?" How would you respond to that question? How would you describe your company's culture? Or the culture of your team? How about the project culture at your company--how things get done? This is what I've found: understanding organizational culture is critical to being able to deliver projects and lead teams. If I don't have a decent idea of the culture I'm walking into for a keynote, workshop, or coaching session, I flat out won't be effective. It would be like walking in and finding that everyone speaks a foreign language. Dr. Ed Schein is a world renowned MIT professor and expert on organizational culture, and has authored fourteen business books, including The Corporate Culture Survival Guide. When it comes to knowing how to get things done in a company, Ed is one of my heroes, so I was very excited to have the opportunity to speak with him recently.{loadposition content_amazonHelping} This episode contains the first part of my discussion with Dr. Schein, with the remaining to be included in the next cast.
