What if the greatest threat to your spiritual life isn't something loud and obvious, but something quiet, subtle, and living in your own heart? In Exodus 20:17, God warns us about the insidious danger of covetousness—a desire that can ignite like a powder keg, leading to a chain reaction of sin. In this message, we uncover how coveting destroys, how contentment protects, and why learning to trust God's wisdom can uproot countless evils from our lives. Discover the ultimate Christian virtue that can bring freedom, peace, and joy no matter your circumstances.1) The insidiousness of covetousness2) The powder keg of covetousness3) The kryptonite for covetousnessText: Exodus 20:17

In our Season 3 finale, we tackle the 10th Commandment—coveting—why Scripture treats it as a heart-level idol factory and the “mother sin” that births so many others. We trace coveting from desire to destruction (think: Gollum), show how it undermines love for God and neighbor, and conclude with practical, Gospel-rooted disciplines for cultivating contentment.  The Chorus in the Chaos Info: Website & Blog: www.chorusinthechaos.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/chorusinthec... PLEASE FILL OUT OUR SURVEY: https://bit.ly/BLNOlistenersurveyIn the season finale, Rabbi Fohrman and Imu explore the final commandment—“Thou shalt not covet”—through the emotional reunion of Jacob and Esau. As they unpack the psychological wounds left by their father's perceived favoritism, a deeper truth emerges: healing comes not from acquiring more, but from seeing the divine in one another. Through a close reading of the text, they reveal how these once-bitter rivals move beyond envy, offering a profound lesson on finding wholeness in our relationships. For more on Rabbi Fohrman's reading of the deception story, see this essay from his book Genesis: A Parsha Companion, as well as this video Why Did Rebecca Trick Her Husband Isaac. Their hearts were so envious that they couldn't see the miracle that Jesus performed, by raising Lazarus from the dead, but only saw a threat to their own popularity & authority. Jesus comes in humility the Pharisees respond in pride. Jesus enters to rejoicing while the Pharisees only grumble. Exodus 20:1-17 English Standard Version The Ten Commandments 20 And God spoke all these words, saying, 2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 3 “You shall have no other gods before[a] me. 4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5 You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing steadfast love to thousands[b] of those who love me and keep my commandments. 7 “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. 8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labour, and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore, the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. 12 “Honour your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. 13 “You shall not murder.[c] 14 “You shall not commit adultery. 15 “You shall not steal. 16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour. 17 “You shall not covet your neighbour's house; you shall not covet your neighbour's wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbour's.” Footnotes Exodus 20:3 Or besides Exodus 20:6 Or to the thousandth generation Exodus 20:13 The Hebrew word also covers causing human death through carelessness or negligence

Send us a textPodcast Show Notes: Rediscovering Spiritual Authenticity and Hope in the End TimesWhat if the spiritual journey you've been seeking is closer than you think? In this powerful episode of Hashtag Christian Straight Talk, we promise to guide you through the tough terrain of maintaining hope and faith during what many perceive as the end times. Through a heartfelt exploration of the Ten Commandments and the life of Jesus Christ, we challenge the tendency to stray from pure biblical teachings and encourage a return to spiritual authenticity. As we reflect on our modern world, we paint a vivid picture of societal struggles, comparing the UK to a neglected garden in desperate need of spiritual renewal. In this time of uncertainty, we emphasize that personal and collective transformation is not just needed—it's absolutely crucial for the future of our faith. In a world drowning in materialism, we ask: How often do we pause to reflect on what truly fulfills us? In this episode, we confront the vicious cycle of envy and material desire, sharing powerful personal stories about the elusive satisfaction that comes from chasing worldly possessions, like the allure of a luxurious car.Drawing from Scripture, we delve into the emptiness that material wealth can leave behind. We also discuss the dangers of debt, which silently ensnare many in the pursuit of worldly riches. Using wisdom from Jesus and King Solomon, we unfold the profound concept of a "God-shaped hole" that only a genuine relationship with the divine can fill. We caution against the false allure of wealth, often portrayed on social media or amplified in certain church practices, that pulls us away from the life-giving truth found in a relationship with Christ. As we draw toward the conclusion of this episode, the message of hope takes center stage. We focus on the unwavering promise of peace and fulfillment found in Jesus Christ, encouraging you to hold fast to faith even in the darkest moments. Reflecting on the cross of Calvary, we urge you to embrace spiritual resilience by serving Jesus at the foot of the cross. By holding onto the liberating truth found in John 8:32, we aim to guide you toward a life of spiritual awakening.Through this episode, we hope to spark a movement of faith that will help you discover a life rich in devotion and purpose, free from the chains of materialism and worldly distractions. Our prayer is that this conversation brings you closer to living an authentic Christian life, rooted in truth and guided by the eternal promises of Jesus Christ.Join us in this powerful conversation on Hashtag Christian Straight Talk, and let's journey together toward a more meaningful, purpose-driven life.Support the showhttps://www.pastorbencooper.co.uk/

Send us a textPodcast Show Notes: Breaking Free from Materialism and Embracing True Spiritual and Financial FreedomWhat if you could experience true freedom, not just spiritually but also financially? In this transformative episode of Hashtag Christian Straight Talk, we guide you on the journey of breaking free from covetousness, debt, and materialism, aligning your life with the teachings of Jesus Christ. By focusing on the liberating truths of John 8:32, we emphasize how true freedom comes from a personal relationship with Jesus, rather than the pursuit of worldly possessions. We kick off by drawing parallels between the modern-day allure of items like luxury watches and cars and the timeless wisdom found in Exodus 20. The pursuit of material desires can quickly ensnare us, just as it did for the Israelites in the past. In this episode, we explore how these desires can lead to spiritual unrest and emphasize the importance of re-aligning our focus on what truly fulfills—faith in Christ, not worldly possessions. As we break bread and share wine, we are reminded of God's covenant and the spiritual freedom that comes from living in Christ. We explore the significance of communion and Jesus' teachings, emphasizing that spiritual freedom is not about rituals but about living a life of deep faith and contentment. Covetousness can rob us of peace, but faith in Christ provides profound and lasting peace.Throughout the episode, we dive deep into Scripture, drawing from Exodus to Romans, and highlight the essence of contentment found in God's Word. We encourage our listeners to transform their lives by moving away from worldly desires and aligning their actions with God's will. True fulfillment, we argue, is found in a heart surrendered to God's purpose, not in the accumulation of wealth or possessions. In addition to spiritual freedom, we tackle the practical aspect of financial freedom, pointing out that debt has become a modern form of enslavement. With biblical teachings as our compass, we offer practical advice on managing finances, setting financial goals, and living within one's means. By making short-term sacrifices, we emphasize the long-term spiritual and financial rewards that come from honoring God with our money. We also highlight the importance of prioritizing a relationship with God above the pursuit of material wealth, focusing on the 'debt of love' we owe to God and others rather than accumulating material debts. By shifting our focus to the eternal, we inspire listeners to live a life free from the burdens of materialism. As we conclude, we remind you that no matter where you are on your journey, God is with you. He offers hope, guidance, and the path to true freedom and fulfillment—spiritually, emotionally, and financially. Join us on this transformative journey and take the first steps toward a life of spiritual and financial freedom.Support the showhttps://www.pastorbencooper.co.uk/

It forbids coveting the goods of another, as the root of theft, robbery, and fraud, which the seventh commandment forbids. "Lust of the eyes" leads to the violence and injustice forbidden by the fifth commandment.318 Avarice, like fornication, originates in the idolatry prohibited by the first three prescriptions of the Law.319 concerns the intentions of the heart; with the ninth, it sumarizes all the precepts of the Law. The Tenth Commandment, “You shall not covet your neighbor's goods” (Ex 20:17; Dt 5:21), teaches that we have a responsibility to respect the rights of others and forbids us from unjustly desiring, taking, keeping or damaging the property of others.Source catholic bible scriptures thou shall not covet they neighbors goods

The 10th commandment, "You shall not covet," is the perfect conclusion to the Commandments because it encompasses all of them, and brings us back to the first. In other words, we'll see tonight that coveting is a kind of idolatry. It is when we desire something to the degree that it outranks God, and our minds and hearts are drawn to it. And in this way, it leads us to break all the other commandments.

Today we discussed Douglas Murray's* interesting appeal to the moral vice of acedia in attempting to explain the ills of modern society. We also looked at the biblical command not to envy, and how profoundly important this command is for our country, and for our families. *Audio clip of Douglas Murray at the 2023 National Review Institute Ideas Summit in Washington D.C. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/bombadilsporch/message

Coveting is not a usual word in our vocabulary so we unpack what it means. We talk about how it reveals God's sovereignty and goodness. We explore how this commandment ties in with the other 9 and points to the heart behind our obedience. We then unpack how these ideas should drive us to living lives of contentment and thankfulness, even when things don't seem to be going so well.Thoughts, questions or feedback? Exodus 20:1-17 God spoke all these words, saying, “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image…You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore, the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. Honor your father and your mother… You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. You shall not covet…” Key Words: You, Not, Covet, Neighbor, Servant, Wife, House Keystone Verse: You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's.
