The 10th commandment calls us to not lust after what our neighbor has. In our modern day, our “neighbor” is far more than the couple that live next door, our neighbors are everyone we know. Coveting after what they have, desiring it for ourselves leads only to harm and further sin. Join us as we dive into this final commandment in Exodus 20.17. In this final sermon on the 10 Commandments, pastor David Townsend shows us how the command not to covet serves as a sort of summarization and exclamation point to the entire decalogue. It is the final arrow drawn and released at the heart of transgression and lawlessness, exposing the depth of our idolatry and God's goodness in how he's ordered the world.
It's the final week of our 10 Commandment study! Yay! We wrap things up this week looking at the intentions of our hearts concerning physical objects. Monday: It's not enough to just not steal. We must also examine how we feel about the objects in our lives. Tuesday: Greed is one of the 7 deadly sins, and something we all experience. Wednesday: The Commandment also addresses envy, the killer of friendship and love. Thursday: It's okay to own things and even want them, but we must cultivate a spirit of detachment. Friday: Finally, as with all things, we must stop and examine the desires of our hearts. Do we desire something more than Jesus? The 10th commandment, "You shall not covet," is the perfect conclusion to the Commandments because it encompasses all of them, and brings us back to the first. In other words, we'll see tonight that coveting is a kind of idolatry. It is when we desire something to the degree that it outranks God, and our minds and hearts are drawn to it. And in this way, it leads us to break all the other commandments.

Today we discussed Douglas Murray's* interesting appeal to the moral vice of acedia in attempting to explain the ills of modern society. We also looked at the biblical command not to envy, and how profoundly important this command is for our country, and for our families. *Audio clip of Douglas Murray at the 2023 National Review Institute Ideas Summit in Washington D.C. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/bombadilsporch/message
Pastor/Elder Anthony Valentine preaches on the 8th commandment: what it means to not covet.
Welcome to Season 3 of Down Under Theology, a podcast equipping and encouraging Australian Christians to get down and under the theology impacting the life and mission of the church. In Episode 13, we chat about the 10th and final commandment - do not covet. Coveting is not a usual word in our vocabulary so we unpack what it means. We talk about how it reveals God's sovereignty and goodness. We explore how this commandment ties in with the other 9 and points to the heart behind our obedience. We then unpack how these ideas should drive us to living lives of contentment and thankfulness, even when things don't seem to be going so well.Thoughts, questions or feedback? We end our series on the 10th commandment looking at how the prohibition of coveting is actually an invitation to love and give ourselves away like God did for us in Jesus Christ.

Sermon Delivered on the Fourth Sunday of Lent By: The Rev. Sean Templeton
Exodus 20:1-17 God spoke all these words, saying, “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image…You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore, the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. Honor your father and your mother… You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. You shall not covet…” Key Words: You, Not, Covet, Neighbor, Servant, Wife, House Keystone Verse: You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's. Damon Woods discusses Ten Commandments, volume 12.
In this last sermon in our series on the 10 Commandments, we learn that coveting is when our desire goes wrong. Either we want something that God says is bad, or we want something more than we want God. Scripture shows us that this tenth commandment is deeply related to the first—Paul says "covetousness...is idolatry."
