The Red Sox, for the fifth time this season, failed to catapult past the .500 mark as the Rays rallied late to win the series on Sunday. Even though it's difficult to criticize Alfredo Aceves and the Red Sox bullpen, is Aceves' inopportune blown save on Sunday another example of the team failing to fully take advantage of any positive momentum they've built uo? How would one characterize Jon Lester's disappointing on Friday, where the Red Sox had an opportunity to hurdle over the .500 mark as well? Speaking of Friday, Alex speaks about the Red Sox and Rays bench clearing "brawl." How odd was it that the coaches appeared to be more into the altercation than the players were? Alex believes Bobby Valentine is trying desperately to "rally the troops," but to no avail. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex looks at the AL East standings. The Orioles signed Adam Jones to a 6-year extension worth 85 million dollars. How wise of an investment will that be? Alex also talks about some other stories around the game, including the Angels winning 6 straight games, and the Reds now leading the NL Central. The Red Sox have won 10 out of 13 games, and are once again at the .500 mark. Will they surpass the .500 mark for the first time this season when the play the Rays over the weekend? With the admirable way they've been scrapping it together recently, one has to think that is certainly a possibility. Amazingly, the Red Sox have not lost a lot of ground in the AL playoff race, even with this prolonged stint of mediocre play. Kevin Youkilis has returned from the DL, and his presence has created a roster crunch. Once Ryan Sweeney returns from the 7-day DL, is Will Middlebrooks going to be sent to AAA? If so, how long will Middlebrooks be in the minor leagues? Cody Ross has landed on the DL, too, though his left foot injury isn't nearly as severe as originally thought. What does Ross' injury say, if anything, about the medical staff on the team? On Monday's podcast (episode 503), Alex lauded David Ortiz for calling a player's only meeting. Since then, Ortiz has lashed in he press, criticizing the Red Sox media, Front Office, and some of his teammates. Can Ortiz still be characterized as a leader, even though he's shown himself to lack self-awareness? In the "Around the League" segment, Alex looks at the AL East standings. The recent good play of the Angels and Marlins, and the issue of instant replay is discussed, too. Post on the message boards at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards. Signing up is free, quick, and easy. Alex talks about the suddenly streaking Red Sox, who have moved within 1 game of .500 and have won eight out of their last ten games. Did David Ortiz' player-only meeting, held after the 8-3 loss against Cleveland on May 11, have a tangible positive effect on the team? Alex issues a mea culpa in regards to his projections for Ortiz' performance on the field this year, and his performance off of the field as well. Daisuke Matsuzaka's rehab stint may be restarted, and what does that mean for Daniel Bard's future in the starting rotation? Is this still a worthwhile long-term project to pursue this season? Kevin Youkilis' rehab stint, conversely, will end on Tuesday in Baltimore. With the report late last week that said Bobby Valentine deemed Youkilis to be a "liability" in Spring Training, will Youkilis return to third base? If he does, will he only be in Boston to build up his trade value? Topics such as the Red Sox players demonstrating swagger in the media, and what Don Orsillo and the "Remdawg" truly think of the team are discussed too. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex analyzes the AL East standings through the 1/4 mark of the season, and wonders whether or not the Orioles are for real. Kerry Wood's sudden retirement, and Chris Perez calling out Indians' fans are talked about as well. Post on the message boards at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards. Signing up is free, quick, and easy. The Red Sox have won 5 out of 6 games, and also received 5 quality starts throughout that streak. Is that a harbinger of things to come, or can the recent performances be chalked up to facing mediocre competition? Alex talks about Josh Beckett's dazzling start on Tuesday, and why an outing like that exemplifies a lot of the frustration Red Sox followers have with Beckett. How can he pitch so well on Tuesday, just five days after he pitched so poorly last Thursday? Has Beckett "silenced his critics" with his win on Tuesday? "Tim Wakefield Day," the sudden lack of a legitimate lead-off hitter, and Kevin Youkilis' pending return are touched upon, too. Plus, Alex explains why Curt Schilling is a massive hypocrite. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex looks at the AL East standings, and also some stories involving baseball's "unwritten code." Post on the message boards at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards. Feedback of all kinds (but especially positive feedback) is welcome.
Alex begins the show by further analyzing the Josh Beckett situation, and his defiant attitude after the game on Thursday. Beckett's defiance embodies the ignorance around the Red Sox organization, Alex says. The team fails to realize the negative perception around them, and the players don't seem to care about it. Bobby Valentine has been less than advertised in-terms of how he's handled these situations through the media, as he continues to make excuses for the players. Has Valentine been sedated? Do the players know that they're a more valuable commodity than Valentine is, and thus don't respect him? Alex also recaps the 3-game series against Cleveland, in which the Red Sox took 3 of 4 games. The key to the series win was the Red Sox receiving strong performances from the starting pitchers. With nobody running away in the AL East, can the Red Sox survive this disappointing start? Or will the attitude within the clubhouse prevent them doing so? In the "Around the League" segment, Alex looks at the AL East standings, where the Orioles still hold the lead. Alex also looks at how the NL East is unfolding, and tells you why John Axford of the Brewers has become one of his favorite players in the game. It is episode 500 of "Without a Curse," and Alex opens the show by thanking all of the listeners for tuning into the show over these past 7 years. Alex also thanks executive producer Dylan Richardson for all of the hard work he's put into the show over the past several years. Then...the evisceration of the 12-18 Red Sox commences. It goes from bad to worse with the perception of the team, as Josh Beckett was reportedly spotted golfing with Clay Buchholz last Thursday, two days before he missed his scheduled start due to a sore lat muscle. It has also been reported that Beckett refused to listen to trainers over the last home stand. Has Beckett gone rogue? Even though he's been the best starting pitcher on the team this season, has the time come to consider moving on from Beckett? Alex discusses this past series against the Royals, as the Red Sox dropped 2 of 3 games. Will Middlebrooks is one of the few bright spots, as he continues to perform offensively. Is it premature to begin discussions about Middlebrooks replacing Youkilis at 3rd base? Also, when will Bobby Valentine beginning managing this pitching staff to actually win games instead of treating these games like extended Spring Training? Adrian Gonzalez has been under a lot of scrutiny for his persona this past week. Is that criticism warranted, or has Gonzalez been a problem for the Red Sox? In the "Around the League" segment, Alex looks at the AL East standings and how David Robertson has struggled thus far in the closer's role. It's been another bad week for closers, as the Blue Jays recently replaced Francisco Cordero as closer in their bullpen. Alex also talks about Cole Hamels' decision to intentionally hit Bryce Harper last weekend, and whether or not it was warranted. Thanks again to all who have listened to "Without a Curse" over these past 500 episodes. Post on the message boards at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards. Email Alex at Alexredsox076@aol.com, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1. RIP to Carl Beane...what a tragedy. He and his voice will be missed throughout Fenway Park.
In one of the longer episodes in "Without a Curse" history, Alex reveals his utter lack of faith in all aspects of the Red Sox organization. Alex eviscerates the team after a 1-5 home stand against the A's and Orioles, including two deflating extra-inning losses to Baltimore on Friday and Sunday. Alex discusses the recently revealed answers regarding Carl Crawford's elbow injury, and also wonders as to whether Clay Buchholz is being upfront with the team about the health of his back. There is no way Buchholz can be healthy right now... The bullpen has been a bright spot for the team, and even their efforts weren't good enough over the weekend. Is it fair to expect the bullpen to continue to perform at this level, or will they eventually fall back to earth? If the bullpen does fall back to earth, can the starting rotation be expected to pick up the slack? Plus, is this a "feast or famine" kind of offense? Alex also comes to the realization that Bobby Valentine may very well be over his head. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex analyzes the AL East standings and states why he has no doubts Mariano Rivera will be back from his ACL injury in 2013. Alex also talks about the closer troubles around the league, including the Marlins, Cubs, and White Sox making changes at the position. Chipper Jones blasting Jamie Moyer in the press, and what could be the start of a hot streak for Albert Pujols and the Angels is touched upon, too. Post on the message boards at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards. "YateleyRedSox" is the receipt of "post of the day." Email Alex at Alexredsox076@aol.com, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1. Thursday's podcast is episode 500 of "Without a Curse." Thanks to all who have listened over the years.
Alex discusses the recent string of injuries that have hit the Red Sox, including Kevin Youkilis' various aches and pains that have placed him on the 15-day DL. Will Middlebrooks has been called up to play everyday in Youkilis' absence. Is this the beginning of the end for Youkilis? What do his injuries, and the fact that he seemingly wasn't ready to begin the season, say about him and the training staff? Alex also talks about the possibility of Josh Beckett missing his start over the weekend after throwing 126 pitches in an outing last weekend in Chicago. It's just another sign that Beckett is not an ace; however, why did Bobby Valentine have Beckett out there for that long if he can't handle the workload? The Red Sox have made a flurry of roster moves recently, and the fact that Jose Iglesias is on the roster angers Alex, as he continues his "anti-Iglesias" crusade. The 3-game series against the Oakland A's is recapped, including some discussion as to whether or not Clay Buchholz is completely healthy. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex analyzes the AL East standings and also offers commentary on the Evan Longoria hamstring injury. When will the streaking Rays be affected by Longoria's absence? Plus, will the Roger Clemens perjury trail end similarly to the way the Barry Bonds trail ended? Post on the message boards at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards. Email Alex at Alexredsox076@aol.com, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1.
For once, there is a lot of good news to talk about in regards to the Red Sox! They have won 6 of their last 7 games, and are within 1 game of .500 on the season. What went right for the Red Sox on this road trip to Minnesota and Chicago? Was it really as simple as the starting pitching finally providing the Red Sox with innings and quality efforts? Alex discusses the improved recent performance from the bullpen, and how much of it is legitimate and how much of it can be attributed to the level of competition they've played recently. Even if it is due to the level of competition, is that necessarily a negative thing? The offense continues to perform well, with David Ortiz off to a thunderous start. Mike Aviles, Ryan Sweeney, and Cody Ross have done their parts to minimize the effect of Jacoby Ellsbury's absence as well. The upcoming series against the A's is previewed, as is the potential upcoming roster crunch with Aaron Cook's first opt-out date approaching. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex looks at the AL East standings and discusses the teams with the hottest starts in baseball as well as the teams with the slowest starts in baseball. Alex interviews Jon Couture of The New Bedford Standard-Times and the "Better Dead than Red" Red Sox blog. Alex and Jon discuss the controversy over Daniel Bard's role on the pitching staff, the peculiar timeline of Carl Crawford's suddenly severe elbow injury, and how the first weeks of Bobby Valentine's managerial tenure have gone. Alex recaps the three game sweep against the Twins, and touches upon all of the storylines from the week including Bard's reluctance to accept even a temporary role in the bullpen, Crawford's visit to Dr. James Andrews, and Bobby Valentine not knowing whether Minnesota starter Liam Hendricks is a lefty or righty until three hours before game time. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex recaps the week in the AL East while also questioning how Michael Pineda's labrum tear came along so suddenly. It was a tough loss for the Bruins last night. They couldn't find a way to score on the power-play or open a game open. Alex opens the show by briefly discussing the Bruins as well. The Red Sox enter the week riding a 5-game losing streak, as their contest against the Yankees was mercifully rained out last night. Alex does briefly touch upon the well-done and frankly surreal ceremony Friday afternoon at Fenway Park. Alex gets quite sentimental when talking about those 2003-2005 Red Sox teams. After that, though, it's all downhill, as Alex replays the horrors from Friday and Saturday's games against the Yankees. The biggest horror of all, of course, was the bullpen surrendering 14 runs in the 7th and 8th innings of Saturday's game. Is there anything that can done to fix this bullpen? How is it possible that a team sporting an 180 million dollar payroll enters a season with this wretched cast of relievers? Alex also talks about more troubling news regarding Bobby Valentine and how poorly the Red Sox are responding to him. At a 10-31 record over their last 41 games, is something deeply wrong with this core of players? The worst thing about the weekend; however, wasn't the bullpen's meltdown on Saturday. It was something else that occurred between the top half and bottom half of the 8th inning... In the "Around the League" segment, Alex discusses the AL East standings and lauds praise on some of the upper-echelon teams in the American League. But stay-tuned, as Alex is on the verge of launching a new football podcast that he is excited about.
Alex discusses the most recent Red Sox three game losing streak, and speaks about the atrocious efforts from the bullpen on both Tuesday and Wednesday night against Texas. Shouldn't all blame for this horrid bullpen fall on the baseball operations department? They are the people who assembled the team. The controversy stemming from Bobby Valentine's comments regarding Kevin Youkilis' "emotional investment" continues to linger. Is Valentine allowed to manage the way he wants to manage? Are bad fluke injuries (Bailey and Ellsbury), an atrocious bullpen, a divided clubhouse, and a fan base and media who hates him a recipe for Bobby V's failure? Is Valentine receiving a fair shake in Boston? Alex talks about the upcoming series against the Yankees, and the 100-year Fenway Park anniversary, which Terry Francona has now decided he will attend. There is no better way for Tito to stick it to ownership than to receive the loudest ovation on Friday afternoon. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex updates us on the AL East standings, talks about Tim Lincecum's slow start, and looks at the retirement of Ivan Rodriguez. Even though Jacoby Ellsbury has dislocated his right shoulder, and even though the effect of that injury will most certainly be felt, the Red Sox rolled through the weekend taking three straight games from the Rays. Alex discusses the resiliency of the Red Sox offense, and how they've shown a lot of grit early on in the season. Alex also touches upon the terrific weekend performances from David Ortiz and Cody Ross. Josh Beckett, though he was lacking superb stuff, dazzled in the home opener on Friday. Can Beckett transition from a power pitcher to a craftier pitcher? Is it fair to question Beckett's commitment? Clay Buchholz battled and gave the Red Sox 7 innings on Saturday. How important is that? How the Red Sox may go about attempting to replace Ellsbury, and Bobby Valentine's public criticisms of Kevin Youkilis are touched upon too. Is Valentine going to cause a clubhouse mutiny less than 10 games into the season, and is that what this team bargained for? In the "Around the League" segment, Alex updates us on the AL East standings and talks about Matt Kemp's torrid start. The Red Sox begin the season 1-5 and are 8-25 since September of last year. Adrian Gonzalez commented after Wednesday's loss that this year "feels different" than last year. That may be true, but it sure doesn't look any different. Alex discusses the many faults of the Red Sox, including their inability to play "winning baseball." Much like last September, when one goes right, another thing goes wrong. How surprising is it that after the heap of criticism this team has been under over the past several months, that they've started in such a lackluster fashion? Daniel Bard's first career start, Jon Lester's early performance, the bullpen, and the offensive output is talked about too. The Red Sox open up their home schedule against Tampa Bay this Friday, and will hold the 100-year anniversary celebration of Fenway Park next Friday. The Red Sox kicked off the 2012 season with a dud. The bullpen, most notably Alfredo Aceves and Mark Melancon, undermined the offense's comeback attempts on both Thursday and Sunday. Nothing can destroy a team's morale more than an unreliable bullpen can, and that is precisely why there is reason to fret after only 3 games. The most concerning point of all, though, is that there isn't a lot of talent in the bullpen. It would be foolish and short-sighted to remove Daniel Bard from the rotation before he makes his first start; however, if the bullpen continues to struggle mightily the Red Sox may have no choice but to place Bard back into the rotation. The team had years to prepare for Jonathan Papelbon's exit, and it's disappointing they didn't come up with a better contingency plan. Alex also discusses Josh Beckett's horrific performance on Saturday and his thumb ailment that supposedly has been bothering him over 18 months but that he's just getting around to tending to now. Why hasn't Beckett seemingly approached this year with more urgency? In the "Around the League" segment, Alex takes his first look at the AL East standings and also briefly discusses the biggest stories from baseball's opening day. Alex interviews Nick Piecoro, Diamondbacks beat writer for The Arizona Republic. Alex and Nick preview the NL West: *How different has the NL West been over the past couple of seasons with the Dodgers' tenuous ownership situation? How quickly will the Dodgers return to prominence with new owners? *Are the Padres built to surprisingly contend in 2012 as they did in 2010? *Why have the Rockies fallen off over the past couple of seasons? *Is Buster Posey's health the key to the Giants returning to the postseason? How should we evaluate Brian Sabean's total job performance? *Will the Diamondbacks repeat as division champions, or did they overachieve last season? Opening Day for the Red Sox is just 10 days away, and as Spring Training winds down the roster battles continue to heat up. What are we to make of the reports that Bobby Valentine wants Daniel Bard to return to the bullpen and Jose Iglesias to start at shortstop, even though the Front Office wants otherwise? Are we going to witness a constant power struggle between Valentine and Ben Cherington this season? Should we be concerned that because Valentine is signed to such a short-term deal that he isn't concerned about the long-term direction of the organization? Alex also gives his take on Terry Francona continuing to bellyache over the handling of his dismissal last fall (though, he is in the right), and says the Red Sox should rid themselves of Bobby Jenks, who was charged with a DUI late last week. Is there any good news to share out of Mets' camp this Spring? *Is it realistic to expect the Nationals to contend for the playoffs this year? *How good will the Marlins be this season? What's the long-term plan in Miami? *Do the Braves have enough offense to contend for the division title? *Are the Phillies on the decline? What should the narrative be on GM Jack Zduriencik's job performance? *Are the A's going to continue to run in place until their stadium issue is resolved? Is Billy Beane deserving of the extension he received this offseason? *How improved are the Angels with the acquisitions of C.J. Wilson and Albert Pujols? *How have the Rangers built themselves up to be the elite organization that they are today? Alex also talks about the biggest recent news from Red Sox Spring Training, including the retirement of Jason Varitek. It was time to close the book on Varitek's career, however it is certainly a book worth revisiting many times. Carl Crawford re-injuring his wrist after participating in bunting drills this week is discussed. Why do people view it as a given that Carl Crawford is going to rebound in 2012? Bobby Valentine criticizing all things Yankees is talked about too. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex says that the second wild card being implemented in each league is the best thing that baseball has done since...implementing the first wild card in 1995. Alex interviews Rob Blackstien of www.rotorob.com, as they discuss the inactivity of the Red Sox offseason and whether the complaints of Red Sox fans about the team not spending significant money this offseason are valid or whiney. Also, with reports coming out that John Henry spent 173 more million dollars on Liverpool than he did on the Red Sox last year, are the Red Sox now just a part of a business portfolio? If so, what does that mean for the team going forward? The top stories of the offseason and some pertinent fantasy baseball questions (it's interesting, promise) are talked about too. Alex gives his own take on the reports that John Henry spent 170+ more million dollars on Liverpool than the Red Sox over the past year. If the Red Sox are a part of a business portfolio, will Henry extend himself past a set budget to improve team if the need arises? Plus, what should we make of the Red Sox heading to arbitration with David Ortiz? In the "Around the League" segment, Alex talks about the Yankees dumping AJ Burnett on the Pirates and the Marlins courting Cuban defector Yoenis Cespedes. Post on the message boards at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards. Email Alex at Alexredsox076@aol.com and follow him on twitter @AlexReimer1. Next week is the beginning of the "Without a Curse" baseball season previews! It all begins with the AL East. "The Alex Reimer Show" will be preempted this Saturday...it'll be back next Saturday, 2/25, from 2-4 PM EST on WGAM "The Game" (900 AM Nashua and 1250 AM Manchester) and www.wgamradio.com.
The Patriots dropped their third consecutive game to the Giants, including their second straight Super Bowl. Alex begins the show by briefly lamenting about the Patriots' loss, and how the offense, not the defense, is to largely blame for the defeat. But now that the football season has concluded, New England's attention turns to the Red Sox, who continue to come up short this offseason. Edwin Jackson was taken off the market by the Nationals last week, as they inked him to a 1-year deal. Are the Red Sox really not committed to adding another starter and improving this roster? If so, why? Is it purely due to the "luxury tax restrictions?" How unsavory is that? The Red Sox are also likely going to head to arbitration with David Ortiz, something they rarely do. They're likely heading to arbitration with Ortiz because they cannot afford to spend any money, no matter how relatively nominal, that they don't have to. What kind of repercussions will it have in regards to Ortiz's demeanor this year? Alex also talks about Josh Beckett's comments to Kevin Millar about drinking beer in the clubhouse last year and how nobody on the team last year has taken accountability for their actions. This does not bode well for the team's mentality heading into the season. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex discusses Josh Hamilton relapsing last week and how big of a story it should be. Post on the message boards at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards. Email Alex at Alexredsox076@aol.com and follow him on twitter @AlexReimer1. After 3 weeks of being preempted, "The Alex Reimer Show" returns this Saturday from 2-4 PM EST on WGAM "The Game" in New Hampshire (900 AM Nashua and 1250 AM Manchester) and www.wgamradio.com. Alex will be interviewed as a part of a segment about the Patriots on NECN (New England Cable News) that will air at 4:00 PM and 5:30 PM today (Monday).
Alex interviews Steve Buckley of The Boston Herald about what has been an incredibly lackluster Red Sox offseason. Alex and Buck both agree that the Red Sox are fortunate that the Patriots are in the midst of a Super Bowl run, or else they would rightfully be getting eviscerated on the local airwaves on a daily basis. How is it a excusable for an organization with the clout of the Red Sox to openly be cutting payroll and attempting to "save money" while they already have a championship-caliber core in place? Isn't it far more an example penny-pinching than prudent spending? Alex and Steve also briefly touch upon the upcoming "steroid riddled" Hall of Fame classes as Buck explains to Alex why he will never vote for a confirmed steroid user for the Hall of Fame. The Red Sox did sign outfielder Cody Ross last week...hopefully that wasn't why they shed Marco Scutaro's 6 million dollar salary. The Red Sox supposedly traded Scutaro to create room to sign a starting pitcher, whom they haven't signed yet, by the way. Is that pitcher ever going to be acquired? In the "Around the League" segment, Alex talks about the pro's and con's of the Tigers inking Prince Fielder to a 9-year deal. Plus, when will the Dodgers be sold? Best of luck to the Patriots as they gear up to face the Giants in Super Bowl 46. "The Alex Reimer Show" returns to the airwaves this Saturday, 2/4, from 2-4 PM EST on WGAM "The Game" (900 AM Nashua and 1250 AM Manchester New Hampshire) and www.wgamradio.com for full Super Bowl coverage. Post on the message boards at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards. Email Alex at Alexredsox076@aol.com and follow him on twitter @AlexReimer1.
First off, congratulations to the Patriots for advancing to their fifth Super Bowl in the past ten years. The most comforting thing of all from the game against Baltimore is that for the first time in a long time, the defense carried the day... But as far as the Red Sox go, there is minimal positive news as January heads to a conclusion. Last week Carl Crawford underwent wrist surgery even though this wrist injury supposedly had been bothering him since the end of September. Why wait until now to have the surgery? This speaks poorly on both Crawford and the Red Sox.. The Red Sox also traded their starting shortstop, Marco Scutaro, to "free up" salary to make a run at a starting pitcher to fill out the rotation. Since when did the Red Sox have to make "salary dumps?" While they continually shove "Red Sox Nation" advertising garbage down our throats, they're cutting payroll. How insulting. Theo deserves blame too for leaving the Red Sox in this kind of "financial inflexibility" and for also leaving the farm system thin in depth. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex looks at Victor Martinez tearing his ACL and Fausto Carmona not being the Fausto Carmona whom you thought he was...(if that makes sense). "The Alex Reimer Show" is preempted again this Saturday (1/28). We'll be back on the air from 2-4 PM EST on Saturday 2/4. Listen from 2-4 PM EST on WGAM "The Game" (900 AM Nashua and 1250 AM Manchester) as well as online at www.wgamradio.com. Post on the message boards at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards. Email Alex at Alexredsox076@aol.com and follow him on twitter @AlexReimer1.
Alex interviews baseball columnist Jeff Passan of "Yahoo! Sports." Alex and Jeff spend time discussing last week's Hall of Fame voting results (Barry Larkin receiving 86% of the vote) as well as how voters (and Jeff) will approach the next class of potential Hall of Famers, which includes Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, and Sammy Sosa. Alex and Jeff also talk about the news that Bud Selig will remain commissioner of baseball for at least two more years. Is that a good development for the game? How should one characterize Selig's legacy? The Yankees improved quite a bit over the weekend, acquiring both Michael Pineda and Hiroki Kuroda to bolster their rotation. The Red Sox have done the opposite, signing Carlos Silva, Aaron Cook, and Vicente Padilla (though Padilla isn't official yet). Why can't the Red Sox seemingly spend any money this offseason? Is ownership really that concerned with slightly surpassing the luxury tax? At least it looks like Jason Varitek will get an invite to Spring Training! In the "Around the League" segment, Alex further looks at the Hall of Fame voting results and how voters should approach the "steroid era" candidates for the Hall. Alex also talks about Bud Selig's contract extension as well as transactions from the past week (Yankees improving their rotation, Ryan Madson signing with the Reds, etc). The "post of the day" (www.thesportsstuff.com/boards) is handed out...signing up is free, quick, and easy. Email Alex at Alexredsox076@aol.com and follow him on twitter @AlexReimer1. "The Alex Reimer Show" airs Saturday's from 2-4 PM EST on WGAM "The Game" (900 AM Nashua and 1250 AM Manchester) and online at www.wgamradio.com. "The Alex Reimer Show" is preempted from 2-4 PM for the next two Saturday's...it will air from 2-4 again on Saturday, February 4th. Congratulations to the Patriots for reaching the AFC Championship Game...
It was a big sports weekend where the NHL and NFL dominated, however it is always a good time to talk some baseball...the offseason may continue to be rather uneventful for the Red Sox from a player personnel standpoint, but as Alex points out, there is still work to be done in regards to improving the starting rotation. However, Alex says the work is done in regards to adding to the bullpen and RF. And oh yeah, please do not bring Jason Varitek back... Former Red Sox PR man Doug Bailey penned a supposed "tell all" piece in Boston Magazine this month. How revealing is it? Does Doug Bailey have a bit of a grandiose sense of self-worth? In the "Around the League" segment, Alex looks at Carlos Zambrano being shipped to the Marlins and Theo continuing his habit of eating a lot of money. Alex also talks about the Cubs acquiring Anthony Rizzo, and how Jed Hoyer must really, really like him. By the way, Prince Fielder is still out there... Jorge Posada retired this week, and though he isn't quite a Hall of Famer, Alex explains that he had a terrific career. The top 5 storylines from this offseason as 2012 begins are revealed as well. Post on the message boards at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards. Signing up is free, quick, and easy. Feel free to email Alex as well at Alexredsox076@aol.com and follow him on twitter @AlexReimer1. "The Alex Reimer Show" airs Saturday's from 2-4 PM EST on WGAM "The Game" (900 AM Nashua/1250 AM Manchester) and online at www.wgamradio.com.
Alex is back from his one week vacation and is ready to rein in the new year! And there's no better way to do it than discussing the Red Sox and how they look heading into the new year. Are the 2012 Red Sox on-par with the 2011 team on paper, or have they taken a step back? What is going to be the biggest storyline as Spring Training begins next month? The Red Sox have "replaced" Jonathan Papelbon with Mark Melancon and Andrew Bailey. The jury is still out on how the back-end of the bullpen will perform, but at least Ben Cherington isn't a hypocrite. He meant it when he said that he didn't deem it to be wise to invest 50 million dollars over 4 years for a closer, as Melancon and Bailey will barely make over 1 million dollars combined this season. The coaching staff is intact now as well, with the Red Sox hiring Bob McClure to be the new pitching coach and other changes as well (including shifting Tim Bogar to bench coach)! In the "Around the League" segment, Alex looks at some notable baseball transactions over the past couple of weeks, including the Gio Gonzalez trade and the Rangers winning the "Yu Darvish sweepstakes." "The Alex Reimer Show" airs Saturday's from 2-4 PM EST on WGAM "The Game" (900 AM Nashua and 1250 AM Manchester) and online at www.wgamradio.com. The Bruins play at 1:00 this Saturday (WGAM holds Bruins' rights), so "The Alex Reimer Show" will be preempted from 2-4 this Saturday. Post on the message boards (www.thesportsstuff.com/boards)! Signing up is free, quick, and easy. Email Alex at Alexredsox076@aol.com and follow him on twitter @AlexReimer1.
Alex interviews MLB.com Red Sox reporter Ian Browne, and they discuss the tone of the Red Sox's offseason thus far. Has too much importance been placed on the "Red Sox Nation" branding efforts? Are the Red Sox really serious about not bypassing the luxury tax, and if they are, how will they be able to do it? Alex and Ian also talk about the implications of David Ortiz accepting arbitration and whether Daniel Bard best fits in the rotation or the bullpen to begin 2012. Alex gives his own take on the Mark Melancon trade and Nick Punto signing...were these moves worth the wait? How else will the Red Sox look to round out their roster (more specifically, the end of the bullpen)? In the "Around the League" segment, Alex analyzes the Mat Latos trade and says that the Padres have quietly enjoyed a highly productive offseason. Jimmy Rollins resigning with the Phillies, Michael Cuddyer signing with the Rockies, and other offseason moves are touched upon too. Plus, Barry Bonds was "sentenced" this week. Except, it was more of a "tap on the wrist" more than anything... Post on the message boards at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards where signing up is free, quick, and easy. Email Alex at Alexredsox076@aol.com and follow him on twitter @AlexReimer1. Hopefully everyone has a great holiday season and enjoys their New Year's..."Without a Curse" is off next week and will be back on Monday, January 2nd! "The Alex Reimer Show," after being preempted last week due to the Bruins game, returns to the airwaves on Saturday, December 31st from 2-4 PM EST on WGAM "The Game" (900 AM Nashua and 1250 AM Manchester) and www.wgamradio.com.
The Winter Meetings have passed and the Red Sox did nothing...this must be what it feels like to be a Kansas City Royals fan. While the Angels were busy signing Albert Pujols and C.J. Wilson, Larry Lucchino was busy hawking a 75 dollar coffee table book commemorating the 100 year anniversary of Fenway Park. Oh well, at least Bobby Valentine "hates the Yankees." Alex discusses the reports that the Red Sox will not bypass the luxury tax next year. Should fans be upset that the Red Sox are unwilling to spend more than 178 million dollars on payroll? If the Red Sox do not surpass the luxury tax, then how will they improve their team? How does David Ortiz accepting arbitration affect the Red Sox's payroll constraints? Speaking of Ortiz, Alex also states why he still thinks the Red Sox would've been better off without him for next year. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex talks about the blatant scam the Marlins have been operating for years, and how this recent string of signings makes it more apparent than ever before. The Angels finally following through on free agents (signing Albert Pujols and C.J. Wilson) is discussed too. Should Pujols be vilified for taking the money? Also, what does Ryan Braun testing positive for "something" tell us (if anything)? Post on the message boards at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards. Alex plays his interview with Chad Finn of The Boston Globe and boston.com that originally aired on his radio show, "The Alex Reimer Show." Alex and Chad discuss the pros and cons behind the decision to hire Bobby Valentine as manager as well as the entire managerial search process. Was Ben Cherington's authority completely undermined? Alex and Chad also talk about how the Red Sox will seek to replace Jonathan Papelbon and whether we'll know David Ortiz will be returning to the Red Sox by the end of the week. Alex spouts more analysis on Valentine, and says that given the reported choices, Valentine was a good hire as a "mercenary" to get the most out of this core over two seasons. Alex believes that regardless of how the next two years go, Valentine will not sign an additional contract with the Red Sox. The Winter Meetings are on the horizon, and Alex asks five key questions regarding what the Red Sox will do in Dallas. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex talks about the Fed's investigating the Marlins swindling the tax-payers of Miami-Dade County and if it was wise for them to invest in Heath Bell. The Winter Meetings are previewed, and will anybody sign a supposedly returning Manny Ramirez? Post on the message boards at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards. Signing up is free, quick, and easy! Hopefully everyone had a nice Thanksgiving...nothing to reign in the "post holiday work week" like some quality baseball talk. There hasn't been a whole lot of significant player movement thus far, but now that the new CBA is passed and with the Winter Meetings beginning next week "business should pick up." It's difficult to conduct business, however, without a manager. The Red Sox managerial search continues into another week, which leads Alex to speculate that not all members of the Front Office are supportive of Bobby Valentine. Reports are circulating that Ben Cherington is in-favor of hiring Gene Lamont instead of Valentine. If that is the case, it speaks to the continued disorganization within the Red Sox Front Office and that Cherington may not really be the "right guy" for the GM position (if in fact now he's had two disagreements with ownership regarding the top managerial candidate). In the "Around the League" segment, Alex takes a look at Joe Nathan signing with the Rangers and how that affects the Red Sox's search to replace Papelbon. Alex also analyzes the new CBA and the positives and negatives of it. "The Alex Reimer Show" airs Saturday's from 2-4 PM EST on WGAM "The Game" (900 AM Nashua and 1250 AM Manchester) and www.wgamradio.com. Post on the message boards at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards. Alex takes a look at the Red Sox's dysfunctional managerial search process. This isn't about Dale Sveum. In fact, Bobby Valentine is a far more intriguing managerial candidate than Sveum for this team. It's the fact that Ben Cherington was completely overruled and made to look like a puppet that is so concerning to Alex. The Red Sox are not operating as a cohesive unit. Alex also talks about the ongoing search to replace Jonathan Papelbon and how the new CBA and new player compensation regulations will affect their approach to the free agent market. Plus, how will that and the possibility of more interleague games in 2013 affect David Ortiz's value on the open market? In the "Around the League" segment, Alex takes a look at the new CBA in its entirety. How will the free agent compensation system change beginning in 2012? How significant is it that the players union has reportedly agreed to HGH testing? Also, Alex feels that the decision to add a second wild card to each league AND a one-game wild card playoff beginning in 2013 (when the Astros move to the AL West) is the best decision that Bud Selig has made in his tenure as MLB Commissioner. It will put all of the emphasis back on the divisions and create more meaningful baseball. Meaningful baseball is exciting baseball. Exciting baseball is better baseball. "The Alex Reimer Show" returns to the airwaves after a 2-week hiatus this Saturday (11/26) from 2-4 PM EST on WGAM "The Game" (900 AM Nashua and 1250 AM Manchester) and online at www.wgamradio.com. Happy Thanksgiving to all...enjoy your time.
Alex begins the show by opining about the situation at Penn St. It's not a baseball story, but frankly, it's a story that transcends sports. It's something that must be discussed in any forum. Alex also spends a lot of time analyzing how the Red Sox will attempt to replace Jonathan Papelbon at closer. It is understood that a 4/50 or especially a 5/60 million dollar deal is outrageous for any closer, but what's the "plan B?" If the Red Sox spend close to 50 million dollars trying to replace Papelbon, a fair criticism is, "why didn't you just sign the real thing in the first place?" Also, how will Papelbon's absence impact the reported plans to try out Daniel Bard as a starter during the spring? The managerial search should be wrapped up by Thanksgiving, and right now Alex believes that Dale Sveum is the front-runner. Alex also adds insight into why a guy like Gene Lamont, who isn't going to be manager, was interviewed. The GM Meetings will take place this week and Alex talks about what course of action the Sox will take with David Ortiz as well as how they'll attempt to fill the back-end of the rotation. In the "Around the League" segment, the puzzling decision for the Cardinals to name Mike Matheny as manager, the Marlins' high interest in Jose Reyes, Cuban defector Yoenis Cespedes, and much more is touched upon. "The Alex Reimer Show" was preempted this past Saturday (11/12) and will be preempted this Saturday as well (11/19) due to high school football airing on WGAM "The Game" and www.wgamradio.com. "The Alex Reimer Show" will return on Saturday 11/26 from 2-4 PM EST! Post on the message boards at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards. Alex plays his interview with Scott Lauber of The Boston Herald, which originally aired on his radio show, "The Alex Reimer Show." Alex and Scott discuss the Red Sox managerial search and whether or not it's naive to have "blind faith" that this Front Office will once again select the perfect candidate for the job. The likelihood of Jonathan Papelbon and David Ortiz returning, as well as how Ben Cherington will address the starting rotation is touched upon too. Alex also mentions Marco Scutaro's club option being picked up, the dismissal of two strength and conditioning coaches, and who he would like to see at DH instead of David Ortiz. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex analyzes Brian Cashman resigning for 3 more years as Yankees GM and the decision to retain CC Sabathia for potentially 2 additional years at 50 million dollars in total. Tony La Russa retiring on-top, where Terry Francona fits best next season, Dan Duquette (good friend of the show) shockingly being named GM of the Orioles, Frank McCourt finally selling the Dodgers, and much more is talked about. Happy Halloween to all...hopefully everybody's "Halloweekend" went swimmingly. With the St. Louis Cardinals improbably capturing this year's World Series title, the offseason has officially begun and free agents can file for free agency beginning this Thursday. But firstly, the Red Sox and Cubs must finally agree on compensation for Theo Epstein's service. Bud Selig and the MLB central office expects to intervene on Tuesday to decide on what an "appropriate" level of compensation is. Man, this would be a whole lot easier if we could actually tangibly value the importance of a General Manager like Theo... Alex talks about Theo's op-ed column that ran in The Boston Globe this week and uncovers the "truths" and "lies" in the piece. He also analyzes Ben Cherington's introductory press conference and what we can expect out of Cherington as General Manager. The managerial search, Marco Scutaro's option, and how long it will take to come to a conclusion on what to do with David Ortiz and Jonathan Papelbon is discussed too. Oh, and John Lackey will be out all of next year due to Tommy John surgery! Those innings can be easily replaced, but how well will they be replaced? In the "Around the League" segment, Alex looks at the most compelling World Series in a decade and the stellar ratings that back that up. Congratulations to the Cardinals...what an improbable win. Post on the message boards at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards! There is plenty to talk about this offseason. Email Alex at Alexredsox076@aol.com. Alex's twitter handle is @AlexReimer1. Alex interviews former Red Sox GM Dan Duquette, and asks Dan a variety of questions about Theo Epstein becoming the new president of baseball operations for the Cubs, how valuable a GM like Theo is, and more. Alex and Dan also discuss whether or not the Red Sox should alter their policy about allowing alcohol in the clubhouse and if Red Sox fans should be alarmed that principle owner John Henry seemed to be unaware about the inner-workings of the team last season. Alex also gives his own take on Theo's legacy here in Boston and how it will be a lot easier to define once we see what Theo does in Chicago. Alex talks about Curt Young returning to the A's, the managerial search, and reports about beer drinking going on in the dugout too. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex recaps the first 4 games of the World Series between the Rangers and Cardinals and previews game 5. Plus, how much should baseball be concerned about the likely low ratings for this year's fall classic (again)? Alex finally saw "Moneyball" over the weekend and he gives his thoughts on the film and the "Moneyball" theory. Post on the message boards at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards. It's another week and another mess down at Yawkey Way. This time around, it's about the prominence of vile leaks from "unnamed sources" about Terry Francona's personal life, a scathing article in the Globe that chronicled fried chicken eating and beer drinking in the Red Sox clubhouse, players that should go and players that shouldn't, and John Henry's hour long interview on the radio last Friday afternoon. Alex gives his take on it all, from calling John Henry an "out of touch liar" to chastising ownership for allowing information about Francona's marriage and potential prescription drug problem getting out, and more. Alex also updates us on the Theo Epstein situation, and states that this has to get finalized because both the Cubs and Red Sox have far too much to lose if it doesn't get done. Ben Cherington will reportedly become the GM if/when Theo leaves to the Cubs. Is that a continuation of the "status quo?" What is the "status quo" anyway and is it good or bad? In the "Around the League" segment, Alex previews the Cardinals and Rangers World Series. Yeah, they're still actually playing baseball... Last week it was all about Terry Francona, and this week it's all about Theo Epstein. What's Theo future with this organization? If the Cubs are granted permission to interview Theo, and they do offer him the team presidency, should John Henry give Theo a promotion and contract extension in order to entice him to stay? Is Henry's mind already made up on that? Also, is Theo deserving of a promotion given his recent job performance? If Theo leaves, is assistant GM Ben Cherington the replacement? If so, is that really "change?" On that note, what is the Red Sox's organizational philosophy? Do they even have one? (It's a day of question)... Rumors about John Lackey departure and managerial candidates are discussed as well. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex looks at both the ALCS and NLCS as well as Terry Francona's job performance in the booth. Pretty, pretty good... Alex plays two interviews from his radio show, "The Alex Reimer Show," as he spoke with Steve Buckley of The Boston Herald and Jon Couture of The New Bedford Standard-Times. Steve and Jon both give their opinion on Terry Francona leaving the Red Sox, as well some speculation as to who his eventual successor may be. Was Tito forced out by ownership or this truly a "mutual" decision? The status of Theo Epstein as well as the status of the core of the roster is touched upon as well. Alex also offers his opinion on the Terry Francona dismissal, and yes, he believes it was a "dismissal." Theo potentially bolting to the Cubs, as well some scenarios to consider with the roster and pending free agents are offered as well. Alex's theme today? Change on all fronts with this organization might be for the better... In the "Around the League" segment, Alex offers his guess on where Terry Francona may wind up next. He also talks about GM Tony Reagins leaving the Angels and the highlights from this past weekend's postseason play. It's not injuries, it's not bad luck, and it's not even solely poor fundamentals and "baseball character" anymore...it's choking, plain and simple. The Red Sox were in the lead in both Tuesday and Wednesday's games and lost both of them. On Tuesday it was a combination of Daniel Bard and Jonathan Papelbon relinquishing the lead, and on Wednesday it was the supposed "ace" Josh Beckett. How can this team be expected to do anything when they can't do better than dropping 3 of 4 to Baltimore in a week like this? The Red Sox haven't won a series in September and are 5-16 this month. Alex looks at the latest culprits, including Carl Crawford's "stiff neck," Theo Epstein's free agent track record, the woeful starting rotation, horrific clutch performance, and more. There's also an extensive injury update on Clay Buchholz, and discussion about whether a "bullpen game" may be order for this Sunday against the Yankees and game 3 of the ALDS if the Red Sox are fortunate enough to back into the playoffs. Thanks to the Yankees, the Rays remain two games back in the loss column. The Angels are 2.5 games back though. The wild card and AL East standings (now all wrapped up) are discussed in the "Around the League" segment. How will the Yankees play this weekend against the Sox? Plus, there's also a collapse happening in Atlanta... The "post of the day" (www.thesportsstuff.com/boards) is handed out. Signing up to the message boards is free, quick, and easy. All the Red Sox had to do was split against the Rays...but instead they lost 3 of 4 and now their wild card lead is down to 2 games with 10 games to go. The Red Sox have to play out this stretch, and will limp into the playoffs if they're fortunate enough to hold on. It's one thing to get beat, and the Red Sox certainly have gotten beat. But even more frustrating than that is the fact that the Red Sox are playing poorly from a fundamental standpoint and are showing little to no baseball character in this stretch. From Mike Aviles throwing errors to passed balls to starting pitchers not coming up big to base running blunders, this team appears mentally checked out. They've experienced lapses like this all season long too. How much is Terry Francona to blame? The upcoming 4 game series against the Orioles is previewed as well. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex talks about the AL East standings where the Yankees have pretty much locked up a playoff birth and will be allowed to rest their regulars down the stretch. The Tigers clinching the AL Central, the Braves faltering in the NL wild card, and Logan Morrison filing a grievance against the Marlins are touched upon too. The Rays head to Fenway Park this season for what shouldn't be, but is the most important series of the year. After fans, media, and the team all took the postseason for granted, it's time to recognize that this is a real playoff race now. The sooner the Red Sox recognize that, the better. They still seem to be in "rest up" mode, when they should be in "play up" mode (lame way of stating things, but oh well)... This club is falling apart mentally and physically. Alex examines the latest lapses from this past series against the Blue Jays, including Daniel Bard's meltdown on Wednesday. How concerning are Bard's struggles never mind for the future, but for this year? Alex also has injury updates and speculation of Kevin Youkilis, Erik Bedard, Bobby Jenks, Josh Beckett, David Ortiz, and Adrian Gonzalez. Oh yeah, and Tim Wakefield finally won his 200th game. Eighth time's the charm. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex talks about Mariano Rivera garnering his 600th career save, Joe Maddon as a manager of the year candidate, what baseball needs to do to gain back some national traction, and more. Post on the message boards at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards. This weekend they'll be a series thread up for the Red Sox/Rays! Follow Alex on twitter @AlexReimer1 and email him Alexredsox076@aol.com. "The Alex Reimer Show" airs Saturday's from 2-4 PM EST on WGAM "The Game" 900 AM Nashua, 1250 AM Manchester, and www.wgamradio.com. This week, due to Red Sox baseball, the show will air from 2-3 PM.
This is it...the final scheduled edition of "No Holds Barred." Thanks to all who have listened these past 6 years, the show would not have been possible without all of you. Thanks also go out to all for understanding my decision to discontinue "No Holds Barred." It was a very difficult choice to make. In this episode, I touch upon the past week of WWE TV, including the difference in how CM Punk was portrayed on RAW and Smackdown. Alberto Del Rio being stuck in Mexico, where Christian goes from, Randy Orton vs. Mark Henry, and much more is discussed too. The bulk of the episode, however, is spent discussing some "big picture" points. Has Vince McMahon's approach to the on-air product become conservative, even though his business approach remains anything but? Also, stemming from Matt Hardy's "fake" suicide video on youtube this week, it's very clear that something drastic has to change in the wrestling business. It's difficult to be bigger than the addiction when the lifestyle is bigger than you. Thanks again go out to all who have listened over these years. Please keep in touch via email (Alexredsox076@aol.com), on twitter (@AlexReimer1), and on facebook. I don't want to lose touch with any of you. As you know, I'll always have something to say ;). "Without a Curse" will continue here on www.thesportsstuff.com...I'm taking next week off but will return on Monday, 9/12. "The Alex Reimer Show" returns to the airwaves on Saturday 9/10 from 2-4 PM EST on WGAM 900 AM Nashua, 1250 AM Manchester, and www.wgamradio.com.
Alex speaks with Craig Calcaterra, author of the "Hardball Talk" blog on nbcsports.com (15:00). Alex and Craig discuss the NL East division heading into the season, and talk about how far the Nationals are from contention, what this year holds for the Marlins as they wait for their new stadium, and just how screwed the Mets are. Also, are the Phillies undoubtedly the favorites or will the Braves give them a legitimate run for the division title? Alex also goes over the biggest stories from the week in Red Sox Spring Training, including where Tim Wakefield fits into the roster, how the lineup is looking, and just how stupid Ino Guerrero is for hitting Josh Beckett on the head with a line drive in batting practice. The "post of the day" (www.thesportsstuff.com/boards) is handed out, and in the "Around the League" segment, Alex talks about the Yankees' catching situation, Mark Teixeira firing Scott Boras, and whether revenue sharing works. "The Alex Reimer Show" airs Saturday's from 3-5 PM EST on 1120 AM WBNW Boston, www.moneymattersradio.net, and www.livestream.com/wbnw1120. Email Alex at Alexredsox076@aol.com.
Alex speaks with Todd Martin of the wrestlingobserver.com and cbssportsline.com. Alex and Todd debate about "WWE vs. Pepsi Center," who's right, who's wrong, and whether Vince is just milking this for all the publicity he can get. Alex and Todd also discuss the WWE's summer programming from RAW and Smackdown's perspectives, and the possibility of turning John Cena heel. Alex also hands out the "piledrivin' post of the week." Alex talks about the finale of American Idol...only for the first two minutes, don't worry. Then it's all baseball, as Alex recaps the first two games against the Blue Jays, and shares his experience from his first game at Fenway in 2009. Alex also states that David Ortiz hitting a home run on Wednesday is hopefully the start of a tear, as it's within the Red Sox's best interest for Ortiz to hit, because finding a replacement is more difficult than people may think. Alex hands out the "post of the day," talks about the red hot Yankees and Brewers, the horrendous Nationals bullpen, and previews the Red Sox's weekend series against the Mets!
