Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
Everybody exhale. The San Francisco Giants sure don't make things easy on themselves or their fans, and yesterday was certainly no exception. The Giants looked to be cruising their way to a nice getaway day win over the Phillies—until Giants closer Camilo Doval melted down for the second straight night. Walk, walk, homer and suddenly a 5-2 lead was erased before an out had been recorded. But the SF Giants held the line after that and fought hard to put up three runs in the 10th and held on for what was arguably their biggest win of the season.Paul DeJong sure knows how to make a good first impression. He hit a booming home run early in the game. He made a sterling defensive play later on. His two-run single against Craig Kimbrel in the 10th may have been the biggest hit of the entire game, and it came in an 0-2 count. DeJong wasn't a perfect fit for the Giants when Brandon Crawford was healthy, but with Crawford on the shelf and continuing to play poorly when he's on the field, DeJong is the right player at the right time for the SF Giants. It somehow gives this Locked On Giants host Cody Ross vibes, and the parallels are eerily similar.Austin Slater and Wade Meckler had major redemption games. Many fans have been clamoring for the Giants to make a move with Slater, who's been in a horrible slump for about a month. And fans were also upset when Heliot Ramos, not Meckler, was optioned the other day. But Giants manager has continued to show faith in both, and that faith was rewarded in the win. Slater added a huge insurance run with a bloop pinch-hit single and he made a game-saving catch at the wall in the ninth. Meckler had two hits, a walk, a hit-by-pitch, made an impact on the bases, and also made a game-saving catch in the ninth. When will we ever collectively learn that small samples in baseball (and yes, even a month is a very small sample) aren't to be taken too seriously?Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Live from Fenway Park, it was the sports guys from SportsTalk. They talked about football (confusing) for a full half hour. Justin Herbert is good, and Daniel Jones is better than you might think! Then they get into the huge game tomorrow, Red Sox and Yankees. It will take place right behind them, in Fenway Park. Actually, in front of them. They were sitting on the Green Monster. They will be sitting there for the game tomorrow as well! Anyway, Red Sox, Yankees, Nate Eovaldi, and Cody Ross, all in one podcast. Then, in the final segment, SportsTalk calls for the firing of Sandy Alderson because he is bad at his job and isn't a good dude. Steve Cohen is also bad. The Mets should get good players, too. SportsTalk out. Tune in next time when we talk more sports from an exotic location.

In this edition of 201CWithout a Curse,201D Alex previews this week2019s Winter Meetings. One of the biggest storylines with the Red Sox will be whether they decide to go to the extra with one of, or two of Mike Napoli, Nick Swisher or Cody Ross. Alex gives his take on which player out of the trio would be worth making the extra commitment towards. The overarching storyline of the offseason, and this week2019s Winter Meetings is building the 201Cnext great Red Sox team.201D With that in mind, Alex says the Red Sox should avoid handicapping themselves by giving players long-term contracts who are not going to be a part of 201Cthe next great Red Sox team.201D The Jon Lester trade discussions from the past week are brought up, too. If the Red Sox aren2019t going to win with Lester over the next two seasons, it does make sense to consider trading him for a top prospect. But, is ownership willing to tell fans 2013 will be a retooling year? In the 201CAround the League201D segment, Alex gives his thoughts on the legacy of Marvin Miller, who passed away last week. The BBWAA voted on this year2019s Hall of Fame class late last week, and slowly but surely, it appears as if more baseball writers are open to voting in steroid users to the Hall of Fame. Alex is ecstatic at this news, but also realizes there is a long way to go. Evan Longoria and David Wright both signed long-term contract extensions last week, and Alex gives his thoughts on the risk/reward for each deal. Josh Hamilton and Zack Greinke, as the two most talented free agents on the market, will draw a heap of attention this week. But with the ample concerns attached to both players, is it possible the markets for them could become depressed? Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1. Post on the message boards at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards. Alex also played a call-in on this week2019s show, so feel free to call the TSS call-in line as well.
Free agency has officially begun across Major League Baseball, and the Red Sox struck early by resigning David Ortiz to a two-year contract extension. Alex explains why though the Red Sox overpaid for Ortiz, it was a signing they had to make. Cody Ross has hit the open market, and though he sounds pessimistic about returning to the Red Sox, Alex believes it's still feasible to expect Ross to return if his asking price does not surpass two-years. Ross seems to have a swing made for Fenway Park, and he played well last season in less than ideal circumstances. The Red Sox enter free agency with a vacancy at first base, but Alex says the trade market may be the best route for the Red Sox to go in order to fill it. Nick Swisher and Mike Napoli, though they are both intriguing, come with a number of question marks. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex puts a bow on the Giants' latest World Series championship. This year's World Series was also the lowest rated World Series of all-time. Why? The Marlins have hired a new manager in Mike Redmond, and he is the seventh manager in South Florida over the past decade. Plus, Dan Haren hits the free agent market after a deal fell through between the Angels and Cubs over the weekend. Post on the message boards at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards. Signing up is free, quick and easy. Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1. Our thoughts remain with those who were affected by Hurricane Sandy last week. Also, get out and vote tomorrow!
The Red Sox have finally named John Farrell their new manager after working out a deal with the Blue Jays late Saturday night. Alex recognizes the positives to Farrell, two of which being his relationship with members of the pitching staff, and comfort level with Ben Cherington. This was undoubtedly Cherington's hire, which means the manager and general manager will be able to work in concert with each other (the complete opposite of last season.) But, there were a lot of negatives about Farrell's tenure in Toronto. Alex hopes the Red Sox received sufficient answers about Farrell's time in Toronto that made them believe he was a worthy managerial candidate. Farrell should've been hired because he was unequivocally the right guy for the job, not because he was an easy hire to make. Though the manager is an important part of the ball club, it may be the least important area the Red Sox address this winter. The Red Sox have a lot of work to do with the roster, as Alex looks at the holes the team needs to address in the lineup. The futures of David Ortiz, Cody Ross, Jacoby Ellsbury, and others are discussed. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex tells you why he is pulling for the Tigers in this year's World Series. The Yankees were swept by the Tigers in the ALCS, and though their offense was inept, Alex says it would be unwise for the Yankees to make drastic changes based upon nine games. It also may be unrealistic. (The biggest story of the offseason will be the Yankees' goal to get under the collective bargaining tax by 2014, not an unlikely trade of A-Rod.) Speaking of trades, the A's were in the center of a big three-way trade made over the weekend. Billy Beane is at it again. Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1. Post on the message boards at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards.
Rob Bradford is joined by Alex Speier of WEEI.com to discuss whether the Red Sox should keep or trade roster cornerstones like Josh Beckett, Jon Lester, Dustin Pedroia, Jacoby Ellsbury and Adrian Gonzalez or players who are eligible for free-agency after this year such as Cody Ross, Aaron Cook and Kelly Shoppach between now and the July 31 trade deadline. The Red Sox have won 10 out of 13 games, and are once again at the .500 mark. Will they surpass the .500 mark for the first time this season when the play the Rays over the weekend? With the admirable way they've been scrapping it together recently, one has to think that is certainly a possibility. Amazingly, the Red Sox have not lost a lot of ground in the AL playoff race, even with this prolonged stint of mediocre play. Kevin Youkilis has returned from the DL, and his presence has created a roster crunch. Once Ryan Sweeney returns from the 7-day DL, is Will Middlebrooks going to be sent to AAA? If so, how long will Middlebrooks be in the minor leagues? Cody Ross has landed on the DL, too, though his left foot injury isn't nearly as severe as originally thought. What does Ross' injury say, if anything, about the medical staff on the team? On Monday's podcast (episode 503), Alex lauded David Ortiz for calling a player's only meeting. Since then, Ortiz has lashed in he press, criticizing the Red Sox media, Front Office, and some of his teammates. Can Ortiz still be characterized as a leader, even though he's shown himself to lack self-awareness? In the "Around the League" segment, Alex looks at the AL East standings. The recent good play of the Angels and Marlins, and the issue of instant replay is discussed, too. Post on the message boards at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards. Signing up is free, quick, and easy. Email Alex at Alexredsox076@aol.com, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1.
For once, there is a lot of good news to talk about in regards to the Red Sox! They have won 6 of their last 7 games, and are within 1 game of .500 on the season. What went right for the Red Sox on this road trip to Minnesota and Chicago? Was it really as simple as the starting pitching finally providing the Red Sox with innings and quality efforts? Alex discusses the improved recent performance from the bullpen, and how much of it is legitimate and how much of it can be attributed to the level of competition they've played recently. Even if it is due to the level of competition, is that necessarily a negative thing? The offense continues to perform well, with David Ortiz off to a thunderous start. Mike Aviles, Ryan Sweeney, and Cody Ross have done their parts to minimize the effect of Jacoby Ellsbury's absence as well. The upcoming series against the A's is previewed, as is the potential upcoming roster crunch with Aaron Cook's first opt-out date approaching. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex looks at the AL East standings and discusses the teams with the hottest starts in baseball as well as the teams with the slowest starts in baseball. Plus, Alex reveals his unequivocal man-crush on Bryce Harper. Post on the message boards at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards. Signing up is free, quick, and easy. Email Alex at Alexredsox076@aol.com, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1.
Even though Jacoby Ellsbury has dislocated his right shoulder, and even though the effect of that injury will most certainly be felt, the Red Sox rolled through the weekend taking three straight games from the Rays. Alex discusses the resiliency of the Red Sox offense, and how they've shown a lot of grit early on in the season. Alex also touches upon the terrific weekend performances from David Ortiz and Cody Ross. Josh Beckett, though he was lacking superb stuff, dazzled in the home opener on Friday. Can Beckett transition from a power pitcher to a craftier pitcher? Is it fair to question Beckett's commitment? Clay Buchholz battled and gave the Red Sox 7 innings on Saturday. How important is that? How the Red Sox may go about attempting to replace Ellsbury, and Bobby Valentine's public criticisms of Kevin Youkilis are touched upon too. Is Valentine going to cause a clubhouse mutiny less than 10 games into the season, and is that what this team bargained for? In the "Around the League" segment, Alex updates us on the AL East standings and talks about Matt Kemp's torrid start. Post on the message boards at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards where signing up is free, quick, and easy. Email Alex at Alexredsox076@aol.com and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1.
Alex interviews Steve Buckley of The Boston Herald about what has been an incredibly lackluster Red Sox offseason. Alex and Buck both agree that the Red Sox are fortunate that the Patriots are in the midst of a Super Bowl run, or else they would rightfully be getting eviscerated on the local airwaves on a daily basis. How is it a excusable for an organization with the clout of the Red Sox to openly be cutting payroll and attempting to "save money" while they already have a championship-caliber core in place? Isn't it far more an example penny-pinching than prudent spending? Alex and Steve also briefly touch upon the upcoming "steroid riddled" Hall of Fame classes as Buck explains to Alex why he will never vote for a confirmed steroid user for the Hall of Fame. The Red Sox did sign outfielder Cody Ross last week...hopefully that wasn't why they shed Marco Scutaro's 6 million dollar salary. The Red Sox supposedly traded Scutaro to create room to sign a starting pitcher, whom they haven't signed yet, by the way. Is that pitcher ever going to be acquired? In the "Around the League" segment, Alex talks about the pro's and con's of the Tigers inking Prince Fielder to a 9-year deal. Plus, when will the Dodgers be sold? Best of luck to the Patriots as they gear up to face the Giants in Super Bowl 46. "The Alex Reimer Show" returns to the airwaves this Saturday, 2/4, from 2-4 PM EST on WGAM "The Game" (900 AM Nashua and 1250 AM Manchester New Hampshire) and www.wgamradio.com for full Super Bowl coverage. Post on the message boards at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards. Email Alex at Alexredsox076@aol.com and follow him on twitter @AlexReimer1.
