Locked On Indians - Daily Podcast On The Cleveland Indians

We continue to look at why it was that top prospects did not find success in the big leagues. We lead off with a big bat in Nick Weglarz who also begins a theme for this episode injuries. The Big Canadian moved quickly, but got slowed due to injury and then never got the chance he likely deserved. Next up is a pair of similar arms with huge potential that had even bigger injury issues. Jason Knapp and Brady Aiken were about a decade apart in terms of when they were let go, but the two arms have a lot in common in terms of how long they pitched, innings pitched, and what went wrong. We end with a look back at Alex White, who the Indians turned into Ubaldo Jimenez. I explain a crazy theory I had at the time on White. It is interesting that now it would be very clear about White's chances at MLB success. Yet a decade ago the same numbers were not looked at as much. It is easy to see how ERA fails why strikeout data is so much more valued when one looks at White.  Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. We are pleased to present you with Episode 9 of BMore Wired, our Baltimore sports podcast. This week, we talk the Baltimore Orioles recent success from the starters and the Baltimore Ravens getting set to begin training camp.   Episode 9 of BMore Wired is one that I will certainly remember. It is the first time I have done the show without my co-host Scott Rosario, but he has a good excuse as he has spent three days at Oriole Park at Camden Yards braving out the nasty heat wave. The show opens with our segment “Beefed It!” and I call out Minnesota United goalkeeper Sammy Ndjock for throwing the ball into his own goal. As a former goalkeeper myself, this is the worst own goal I have seen. If you have not seen the video, judge for yourself. https://youtu.be/lRlt5C-Fvqs Denard Robinson driving his car into a pond and the police not charging him with anything was a close second, but scoring on yourself will always trump stupidity. The Baltimore birds of summer, the Orioles, have had great success from their starting pitching. It has not just been just Chris Tillman either. Dylan Bundy, Yovanni Gallardo and Vance Worley all pitched terrific games during the O’s recent winning streak. I make a case as to why the O’s should keep Worley in the rotation with his recent success. There are reports that the team could be interested in San Diego Padres starter Andrew Cashner, and in my eyes, they are the same player. Difference is that one has shown me he can handle the competition in the American League East. The other has been getting lit up by National League teams. Then, there was the short-lived hype that Melvin Upton Jr. could be on the move for Ubaldo Jimenez. Obviously, getting rid of Ubaldo in any way possible is a win for this organization. However, Bossman is now with the Toronto Blue Jays. Good. That allows us to continue to boo him as we did as a member of the Tampa Bay Rays. While they did not get the man they want, they are still getting the results. The O’s are coming off consecutive wins in walk off fashion, and we were there live on Sunday to see Nolan Reimold’s walkoff home run in the 10th inning. The following night, the game was won on a walk off error. A win is a win and when battling for first place in the division, they will take any win they can. This week in “7s” our seven stories around the world of sports has a theme of players or organizations getting themselves into the news in a not so flattering way. Here is a rundown of my 7s: Chris Sale cutting up the White Sox throwback jerseys. He was suspended for five games – only one start because he is a pitcher – but could this be the final action that gets him shipped out of Chicago? Ken Griffey Jr. and Mike Piazza join the MLB Hall of Fame, and I admit, I missed out on the Griffey hype as a child. However, I make a case for the players of the Steroid Era to be included into Cooperstown, including the guy who plays in New York named Alex Rodriguez. The NBA decided to pull the All-Star game from Charlotte over a controversial bill passed by the North Carolina government. The city is saying that no longer holding the event could cost them up to $100 million, but I am not buying it. The Russians really are not making good headlines around the globe as of late. They have been found to tamper with the drug testing that took place at the past Olympics and nearly were disqualified from the Olympics in Rio. Instead, the individual sports will decide who can gain entry. Listen in to what I have to say about the Russians. It will make you chuckle. The NFL and its players can never seem to stay out of trouble. First, it was Ezekiel Elliott allegedly accused of domestic violence. Aldon Smith live streamed a video of him smoking a blunt. Le’Veon Bell is facing a four-game suspensions for missing a drug test. These are three of the dumbest things athletes of their caliber can do. On that note, we switch into the discussion of the Ravens. Going along with some of the discussion above, Eugene Monroe and Ray Rice, two players who are both out of the league, are in the news once again. Monroe has opted to retire and smoke dope over playing football, while Rice has pledged to give his salary to charity if signed by an NFL team. Just give it a rest guys. The Ravens have found a replacement for Monroe and that is former No. 1 overall pick Jake Long. He signed a one-year deal with the team on Tuesday and could be the starter at left tackle. If not, he serves as a mentor to rookie Ronnie Stanley. Baltimore enters training camp with six players on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. Those players are Terrell Suggs, Elvis Dumervil, Steve Smith, Breshad Perriman, Trent Richardson and Jumal Rolle. All should be ready at some point during camp, except Rolle who is out for the season. The team will have its first full practice on Thursday. Former Raven Arthur Jones has been suspended four games for violating the league’s policy on performance enhancing drugs. For those of you who do not know, he is the brother of Jon “Bones” Jones, who was also recently found to be using PEDs. The duo earns my “Crying Jordan of the Week” as I close out the show. You can listen to all the episodes of BMore Wired on iTunes and Twitter. Until next week, we leave with you with one of my favorite moments as a Baltimorean, the Delmon Young double.

Inside this edition of "Without a Curse," Alex previews the AL Central with Scot Gregor of the Chicago Daily Herald. Alex and Scot talk about how far away the White Sox are from contending, and the legitimacy of the Chris Sale trade rumors this offseason. They also analyze the revamped Tigers, who attempted to address a number of their weaknesses this winter. The club seems poised to make another World Series run, unless the Royals and Indians improbably improve on their 2013 campaigns. David Ortiz launched a campaign against his supposed "haters" last week, even though few in Boston have expressed any criticism towards him whatsoever this winter. It's understandable that Ortiz wants additional long-term security, but the Red Sox are under no obligation to sign to an extra year before his contract expires. Ortiz's rantings make him look like a delusional whiner, and don't add sympathy to his cause. The Red Sox made a potentially shrewd signing, inking left-handed pitcher Chris Capuano to a one-year contract last week. They've team has put itself in the enviable position of possibly not having to look outside of the organization for pitching help this season, which is a testament to the deep 40-man roster general manager Ben Cherington has built. John Farrell's wise plan to not bat Xander Bogaerts leadoff, the implications of Mike Carp's alleged willingness to play third base and the first four Grapefruit League pitching probables are brought up as well. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex talks about what the Orioles' signings of Ubaldo Jimenez and Nelson Cruz mean for other players (Stephen Drew in particular) who may feel as if they're still free agents because of the draft pick compensation that's attached to them. Jimenez and Cruz may have signed for below market deals, but they still signed. Maybe the problem has less to do with the system, and more with Drew's and Scott Boras' misread of the market. The Angels are rumored to be negotiating a six-year, $150 million extension with Mike Trout. The contract isn't about monetary value. It's about goodwill. Pitchers and catchers have reported. Full workouts start Wednesday, and now it's just a waiting game. All is mostly quiet on the Royals front, but they did pick up Jimmy Paredes. So, okay, that's not big breaking news, but the agreement between Ubaldo Jimenez and Baltimore is a big deal, and we looked at how that deal (4 years, $50 million) stacks up with other free agent starting pitcher deals and what it means for Ervin Santana, who still doesn't have a team. We also looked at what these deals could mean for James Shields and considered how likely an extension might be.Then we brought in a returning guest. Nearly a year ago, we talked to Anthony Seratelli about his trip to professional baseball and his efforts to get into the big leagues. This winter, the Royals let him go and he's with the Mets now, but we wanted to check on him and see what the adjustment to a new organization is like, how the transition was, and how his approach is going to be this spring as he tries to break into the big leagues after seven years in the Royals minor league system. It's the time of year when all the prospect lists start hitting the press, and we took a look at two of them: MLB.com's top 100 and the top 101 from Baseball Prospectus. What followed was a look at the differences between the two. MLB had four Royals listed; BP had seven. Why? We talked about the differing perspectives we saw in the building of the lists and talked about some of the intriguing players like Sean Manaea, who both sides liked (but only one ranked), and Yordano Ventura, who both liked, but BP *really* liked. We also did a brief look around the state of the AL Central and discussed ZiPS projections and the Clay Davenport 77-85 projection for the Royals 2014 record that everyone's been bringing up. Along with those, we talked about the relative importance of stats in analyzing the game, and how projections can answer some questions, and don't answer others. Then, we looked at the starting pitching market in the wake of the Mashiro Tanaka signing with New York and Matt Garza's deal with the Brewers, including a comparison of Ervin Santana and Ubaldo Jimenez and what their value really is now and what it might be in the future. We also included a brief discussion of the value of contracts. Finally, we wrapped up with a few little odds and ends - Jon Rauch signed a minor league deal, Justin Maxwell settled on an arbitration amount, FanFest is coming again (and listen to the episode to see how you can win some money to Kelly's Westport Inn) - before digging into Royalman's quest to reach the MLB Fan Cave and finishing with some words about Mike MacFarlane and Bob Kendrick making it into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.
