Brandon and Tyson break down Jets/Bruins, the lineup and it's a royal rumble at the GM Meetings! Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See https://pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.
Dan and Shawn are joined by Columbus Blue Jackets General Manager Don Waddell (23:30) to talk about hiring Rick Bowness, the Blue Jackets rise under the coach, why he acquired forward Conor Garland before the 2026 NHL Trade Deadline, and some thoughts on the items being discussed at the NHL General Managers' meetings. In addition, the guys breakdown the playoff races in both conferences, detail the impact of Leon Draisaitl's lower-body injury that will keep him out of the Edmonton Oilers lineup for the remainder of the regular season, discuss some of the storylines coming out of the NHL General Managers' meetings and go over Matthew Schaefer's successful first game in Toronto in front of a large gathering of friends and family.
At the GM Meetings in Florida, Department of Player Safety was under the microscope following Radko Gudas’s 5-game suspension for the hit that ended Auston Matthews’ season, with many feeling the punishment was too light; George Parros suggested the door is open to changes, including potential third-party input. Ray feels suspensions are largely too lenient and called for a clearer, streamlined rulebook. Meanwhile, Doug Armstrong is stepping down as Team Canada’s Olympic GM - impacting future events like the World Cup - who would a worthy successor be? The NHL also confirmed a 2028 World Cup of Hockey featuring Calgary, Edmonton, and Prague as host cities (notably without a U.S. location), though questions remain about fitting the tournament into an already expanding 84-game schedule. On the safety front, mandatory neck guards for new players will begin next season, with logistics around enforcement still being sorted and roughly 40 approved models available. Finally, Islanders rookie Matthew Schaefer is rumoured to have as many as 1,000 friends and family in attendance for his hometown game in Toronto, capping off a standout season as the 18-year old continues to make waves league-wide.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
TSN's Mike Johnson joins the show, conversation about Gudas suspension continues around the league, and March Madness tipping off later this week.

In the cutthroat world of MLB free agency, few stories sting like a prodigal son choosing the bright lights of Philadelphia over his Ohio roots. On December 9, 2025, Kyle Schwarber, the Middletown native who grew up idolizing the Cincinnati Reds, inked a five-year, $150 million deal to stay with the Phillies—leaving the Reds empty-handed after a spirited but ultimately underpowered pursuit. For a franchise desperate to reignite fan passion at Great American Ball Park, this was more than a missed signing; it was a gut punch to the Queen City's baseball soul. Schwarber's 2025 season was a revelation: 56 home runs—tops in the NL—and 132 RBIs, a career zenith that vaulted him to second in MVP voting. At 32, the burly designated hitter evolved into a complete force, smashing an MLB-record 23 homers against lefties and posting a .964 OPS versus them, upending his platoon woes. His raw power, infectious energy, and Wawa-endorsed Philly flair made him the perfect leadoff masher behind Bryce Harper, fueling the Phillies' championship chase. No wonder Philly locked him up; he's their clubhouse heartbeat, a grizzled leader who bet on himself and won big. The Reds, though, saw Schwarber as destiny's gift. Just 35 miles from his boyhood diamond, he could've been the thunderous bat to complement Elly De La Cruz's spark and Jonathan India's savvy—propelling Cincinnati from rebuild purgatory to playoff contention. GM Nick Krall courted him aggressively at the GM Meetings, even hosting Schwarber and wife Paige for a November tour of GABP. Their offer? A five-year pact around $125 million, with escalators—respectable, but shy of Philly's bounty. Even the Orioles matched the Phillies' terms, only to watch Schwarber's heart pull him eastward. This miss exposes the Reds' fiscal bind: a mid-market team chasing splashy dreams without the deep pockets of NL East behemoths. Ticket sales would've surged with "Schwar Bomb" nights echoing off the Ohio River, but instead, fans are left with echoes of 2010 glory. Pittsburgh and Boston sniffed around, too, but Cincinnati's emotional pitch fell flat against cold cash. As Schwarber preps for another Citizens Bank Park barrage, Reds Nation mourns what could've been: a homecoming homer derby that never materialized. It's a reminder that in baseball, roots run deep, but dollars dig deeper. For now, the Phillies feast on continuity; the Reds pivot to Plan B, hoping for fireworks elsewhere. But oh, what a Schwarber-shaped hole in the lineup—and the heart. Music from #InAudio: https://inaudio.org/ Track Name Holy (Trap). More Post-Dispatch podcasts. Please consider subscribing. Before plunging into the Hot Stove season and the arrival of the GM Meetings, a look at the performances this past season by the top 12 prospects in the Cardinals system, as ranked in the annual Post-Dispatch Dozen. For several years now, baseball writer Daniel Guerrero has ranked the top 12 prospects in the Cardinals organization, but what sets this ranking apart is the eligibility (players cannot have a moment in the majors) and rubric. Each players is considered through the four Ps of Prospects: proximity to majors, overall potential, how prominent and demanding is his position, and, of course, production or performance. Guerrero joins the Best Podcast in Baseball to explain the process and discuss the 2025 PD 12. Read even more on his rankings and updates on each player here. Only one of the 12, catcher Jimmy Crooks, graduated to the majors, leaving 11 incumbents for the 2026 rankings, but there will be some changes to the rankings going into the coming season, as Guerrero and host Derrick Goold discuss. Just not at the No. 1 spot with ascending talent JJ Wetherholt. Though, No. 2 is up for grabs with recent first-round pick Liam Doyle set to throw his fastball into the mix. Also, Guerrero scoops the host on a strong sleeper pick for the 2026 PD 12. In its 13th season as one of the first and most widely heard podcasts on baseball and the Cardinals, the Best Podcast in Baseball has reached a new season-high with 30 episodes. Each episode is sponsored weekly by Closets by Design of St. Louis, is a production of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, StlToday.com, and lead baseball writer Derrick Goold.
