Kevin Youkilis doesn't crave attention. But in the wake of the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel, the Jewish MLB All Star and World Series champion has become especially vocal, taking to social media to talk about resiliance and Jewish pride in the face of antisemitism. It's a mission that began when he started playing for Team Israel Baseball, which made him realize how important representation is on a global stage. He explains these thoughts in a new article in the Boston Herald written by Gabrielle Starr, the paper's Red Sox reporter. Starr joins the Menschwarmers to break down her hour-long conversation with Youkilis, key takeaways and the new appointment of Craig Breslow as the new Jewish chief baseball officer of the Red Sox. Plus, we recap what's new in Jewish sports, including Alysha Clark's WNBA championship, the three Jews playing in the NBA's season openers, and how this year breaks a possibly record-setting streak of consecutive baseball World Series featuring Jewish players. Credits Menschwarmers is hosted by James Hirsh and Gabe Pulver, and produced and edited by Michael Fraiman. Our intro music is by Coby Lipovitch, and our outro music is "Organ Grinder Swing" by chēēZ π. This show is a member of The CJN Podcast Network. Follow us on Twitter @menschwarmers. I AM AN AUTHOR AND A SPEAKER. I founded and ran a nonprofit youth sports organization for 30 years called the Berkshire Baseball & Softball Club, which later became the BIG Vision Foundation. We ran teams, tournaments and a 130 acre sports complex. I loved every second of what I did. I loved working with kids and teaching them leadership skills and life lessons through sports and community service. I thought that I would have died doing what I loved. Then in 2019, I felt a calling from God for my wife, Sandy, and I. We decided to leave our comfort zone and start a new journey. A literal journey, selling most of our material things and setting out across this beautiful country in an RV with our golden retriever, Youkilis. Sounds crazy, but it was also destined to happen. You see I was raised by a hippy named Loretta Magary, she was a free spirit who quit her job and embarked on her own journey in the mid-1980's. Her journey started in a 1967 Plymouth Valiant with the back seat removed to make a bed and a .38 Special for protection and later evolved into a 1978 Toyota camper. After she passed away in 2005, we were able to experience a small part of her journey by going through her old photos and letters. The people that she met along the way were amazing. I'll be conducting speaking engagements and writing more books on our travels. More importantly, this is our chance to continue my mother's legacy of giving back through volunteering. We will tell the stories of the people that we meet along the way. This is truly “The Journey of My Mother's Son” and as Michael Franti says in the opening verse of his song, “Gloria,” “When many little people in many little places, Do many little things, then the whole world changes.” It will be our job to share and tell the stories of those “Many Little People” through this podcast and my writing. Some of the people that we interview may be famous, most will not be, but they'll all have a story to tell about the difference they're making. Some stories will still have a sports theme, others spiritual, some will be about music, others about food, some will talk about travel, but all will be about the many little people, in the many little places who are doing the many little things to make the whole world change. We pray that you enjoy these stories and are inspired to do your own little things to make this world a better place for all of us. Jordan Youkilis is Wells Scholar, fund manager, and cannabis expert. What are his New Year's Resolutions? He's countering the Drug War. Listen to find out how. Jordan Youkilis' Resolution: This year, I'm resolving to write a revolutionary proposal for sensible drug policy. 50+ years into the War on Drugs, and my heart breaks as its devastation continues compounding. Despite trillions spent, addiction rates haven't moved, and overdose deaths continue rising. The US has 5% of the total population, yet 25% of the prison population. Black men have a 1 in 3 chance of incarceration during their lifetime (vs. 1 in 17 for whites). Meanwhile, the opioid epidemic became the heroin epidemic, which became the fentanyl epidemic. We have the highest per capita cost of health insurance. Yet out pharmaceutical-focused system has taken America from one of the healthiest countries 40 years ago to dead last among industrialized nations. It's time we recognize that our drug policy is fundamentally flawed, and dramatic reform is required to fix it. Prohibition does not work, and the negative consequences exceed those of the substances themselves. Yet our politicians can't even pass commonsense legislation like SAFE Banking – with bipartisan and overwhelming popular support. In the meantime, drugs continue to divide the nation along racial and party lines. Therefore, I'm writing a proposal for our elected officials with revolutionary ideas to fix the War on Drugs once and for all. To the leaders in the movement for sensible drug policy, your input and support on this project is greatly appreciated. Some ideas I'm currently considering: 1. Immediate descheduling of cannabis and rescheduling of psychedelics. 2. Health policy that treats drug addicts as human beings suffering, not criminals to be locked in cages. 3. Broad criminal justice reform – incl. elimination of mandatory minimums and asset forfeitures. 4. Reparations to communities subjugated by the War on Drugs. Investments focused on local programs proven to reduce recidivism and break multi-generational cycles of poverty. 5. Full transparency into campaign financing. Specific scrutiny focused on funding from pharmaceutical co.'s, for-profit prisons, and A&D contractors. 6. Prevention of patenting naturally occurring cannabinoids and other plant molecules. 7. Independent investigation into the intelligence agencies' involvement in the illicit drug trade. Officials complicit in drug trafficking should face criminal charges and be brought to justice. 8. Research funding into the benefits of cannabis and other alternative healing modalities. 9. Implement a path to repeal the Controlled Substances Act and UN Convention on Psychotropic Substances. In the words of Dr. King, it's time “to remind America of the fierce urgency of Now. This is not time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to make real the promise of democracy.” Let's make 2023 the year we end the War on Drugs and restore the integrity of medicine. Love to you all!

Dan Clouser founded and ran a nonprofit youth sports organization for 30 years called the Berkshire Baseball & Softball Club, which later became the BIG Vision Foundation. He truly loved every second of what he did. His passion was working with kids and teaching them leadership skills and life lessons through sports and community service. He honestly thought that he would have died doing what he loved. Then in 2019, Dan felt a calling from God for his wife, Sandy, and him to leave their comfort zone and start a new journey. A literal journey, selling most of their material things and setting out across this beautiful country in an RV with their golden retriever, Youkilis. Sounds crazy, but it was also destined to happen.
Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/8AigUO_uQ7c DO YOU HAVE THE COURAGE TO SELL EVERYTHING AND CHANGE THE PATH OF YOUR LIFE? On this episode we are joined by author, podcaster, and RV enthusiast, Dan Clouser. Dan and his wife Sandy sold everything and explored the US by RV. On this episode we discuss: How Dan's mother impacted his life and this new journey The impact of sports beyond the game Life changing experiences through volunteering For places to listen, places to connect on social media, to be a guest, collaborate with or sponsor DTE visit: https://linktr.ee/DisruptTheEveryday Dan's Website: https://journeyofmymothersson.com/ About Dan in his own words MY NAME IS DAN CLOUSER. Then in 2019, I felt a calling from God for my wife, Sandy, and I decided to leave our comfort zone and start a new journey. I'll be conducting coaching workshops for Positive Coaching Alliance on our travels, but more importantly, this is our chance to continue my mother's legacy.

Cincinnati native Kevin Youkilis goes In The Trenches with Dave Lapham presented by First Star Logistics. A two-time World Series Champion with the Boston Red Sox, Youkilis talks about his childhood growing up and attending Sycamore High School before deciding between Butler University and the University of Cincinnati for college. Growing up a Bearcats fan, Youkilis impressed former Bearcats baseball coach Brian Cleary picking to stay home where he excelled for the Bearcats. Youkilis would earn second-team All-American honors and first-team Conference USA honors as a junior but go undrafted. After another stellar year as a senior, Youkilis would get the call from the Boston Red Sox, who took the Bearcats standout in the eighth round of the 2001 MLB Draft. After a few years in the minor leagues, Youkilis would get the call from the parent club and never look back, embarking on a ten-year major league career with the Red Sox, Chicago White Sox, and New York Yankees. After baseball, Youkilis continued his philanthropy work with the Youkilis's foundation, is the father to three children, and happens to be Tom Brady's brother-in-law.

Kevin Youkilis is the owner of Loma Brewing Company in Los Gatos, CA and Loma Coffee Company in Portland, OR. The former Major League Baseball player won two World Championships, made three all-star teams and won a Gold Glove during a ten year career. He always loved trying local craft beers after a game during his playing days and fell in love with the profession. Youkilis took many of the elements of teamwork, roles, leadership and winning culture to the business world.
We're getting closer to our next chapter, but still have some loose ends. In this episode, Sandy and I (and at times, Youkilis) talk about preparing for our new journey, which amazingly, is only one week away. It's hard to believe that it's been roughly 18 months since I first ran the idea by Sandy that we should sell all of our belongs, buy an RV and travel the country. In some ways it seems like it was so long ago, yet in other ways it seems as though it was only yesterday. Once we put the house on the market, it seemed like it took forever to sell, partly due to putting it on the market, taking it off due to the pandemic, and putting it back on again. When we signed the agreement of sale in June, it seemed like our original settlement date of August 31st was light years away. When our buyers asked if we'd be willing to move the settlement date up to August 14th, we thought, “No big deal, it's only three weeks.” However, there have been many times over the course of the past few weeks that we've realized the value of three weeks. The task of selling every piece of personal property to our names, almost literally, one piece at a time, has seemed like a daunting, borderline, impossible task at times. Sandy and I have each had our days of feeling overwhelmed and unprepared for the task, yet each step of the way, God has shown us that His grace and timing are perfect. The one thing about our relationship is that we can always pick each other up. If she's having a bad day, I can help get her back on track, if I'm having a bad day, she seems to know exactly how to pick me up as well. If we're both having bad days, which thankfully are rare, Youkilis is always more than happy to offer us a nudge of his nose or tail wag to bring a smile to our faces. We're both excited and yet, still sometimes a little scared about our new journey, but throughout all of this, we have shown faith and trust that the Lord is always working in the background on our behalf. Here's to new chapters!

Alex is back from his vacation in southern California, and to paraphrase football coach Pete Carroll, he is "pumped and jacked" to begin this edition of "Without a Curse." Alex begins by discussing both Carl Crawford and Kevin Youkilis returning to Fenway Park this week. Should we be worried Crawford is in further danger of aggravating his elbow this season, or should we trust the Red Sox that he's fine to play, and also won't wind up missing a significant portion of 2013 by delaying potential surgery? Crawford has been impressive at the top of the lineup since returning, and Alex is campaigning for Crawford to remain there. Alex discusses Crawford's comments about Terry Francona dropping him in the lineup last season, and the validity of the trade rumors involving Crawford getting shopped around the league. Youkilis has had a terrific series with the White Sox, which has led to many chastising the Red Sox for trading him at low value last month. Alex explains, however, why the great lament over the Youkilis trade is the definition of revisionist history. Franklin Morales' shift to the bullpen, as well as the overall state of the starting pitching is talked about too. With Jon Lester's continued mediocrity, should the Red Sox explore shaking up the front of the rotation at the trade deadline for this season and beyond? How has the dysfunctional coaching staff affected Lester and the other starting pitchers? David Ortiz's injury, and the reemergence of Adrian Gonzalez's power are touched upon as well. The Red Sox, amazingly though, are only one game out of the second wild card spot. Alex no longer believes it will take 90 wins to win the second wild card, and thus strongly believes the Red Sox have as good a chance as any team to capture a playoff birth. As Larry Lucchino put it, the "varsity team is back." In the "Around the League" segment, Alex looks at the AL East standings. He also outlines what the biggest story in baseball will be in the second half of the season (Stephen Strasburg's innings limit), and tells the listeners why a rule in the new baseball CBA will dramatically affect how teams approach this year's trading deadline. Post on the message boards at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards. Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1!
Alex presents the unofficial "Without a Curse" first half recap, as the Red Sox have come off a disappointing 2-5 west coast road trip that may have derailed their hopes to seriously contend for the playoffs this season. There are five teams in the American League battling for four spots playoff spots (Yankees, Rays, Red Sox, Rangers, and Angels). Will the Red Sox be able to go on a prolonged streak of winning baseball to get to the 90-win plateau? What has to happen for the Red Sox to do that? The Red Sox survived the first half of the season with mediocre performances from the top of the starting rotation, and from the top four in the lineup (Ellsbury, Pedroia, Gonzalez, and Youkilis). In the second half, don't the other stars on this team have to step-up alongside David Ortiz in the lineup? Will the Red Sox be able to go anywhere without Beckett, Lester, and Buchholz all on the field and consistently performing at the same time? Speaking of Ortiz, he stated his contract makes him "embarrassed" and "humiliated." How much credence should be given to these latest comments made by Ortiz? Should the Red Sox sit down and negotiate a multi-year deal with Ortiz? The series in Oakland, and other notes such as Will Middlebrook's hamstring injury and the second-guessing of the Youkilis trade are talked about too. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex looks at the AL East standings and the Yankees who continue to run away with the division. Alex also lists off nine teams, three of which have surprised, three of which have disappointed, and three of which have done what was expected of them. Post on the message boards at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards. Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1. Alex is going on vacation. The next edition of "Without a Curse" (episode 516) will be published on THURSDAY, JULY 19TH.

The Red Sox are once again back at .500, even though their June run-differential is 9. What does that mean? Does it entail that the Red Sox are a front-running team that can beat up on bad pitching, but can't beat good pitching or win many close games? In other words, is it another sign that the Red Sox are the definition of a mediocre baseball team? Alex also looks at the slumping middle of the lineup (excluding David Ortiz), and how Dustin Pedroia's, Adrian Gonzalez's, and Kevin Youkilis' poor performances have affected the club. Alex says it's now time to cut bait with Youkilis, and play Will Middlebrooks regularly. Theo Epstein did a round of interviews with the Boston media last week, discussing his latter years as Red Sox GM. What did Theo reveal in those interviews? Josh Beckett's latest DL stint, and the weekend series against the Cubs are discussed as well. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex looks at the AL East standings, where the Yankees are beginning to separate themselves from the pack. Manny Ramirez's release from the A's (a phone call from an enraged "fan" asking for his release is played), and weekend notes are talked about too. Plus, was Matt Cain's perfect game one of the best pitching performances of all-time? Post on the message boards at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards. Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1.
Alex talks about the suddenly streaking Red Sox, who have moved within 1 game of .500 and have won eight out of their last ten games. Did David Ortiz' player-only meeting, held after the 8-3 loss against Cleveland on May 11, have a tangible positive effect on the team? Alex issues a mea culpa in regards to his projections for Ortiz' performance on the field this year, and his performance off of the field as well. Daisuke Matsuzaka's rehab stint may be restarted, and what does that mean for Daniel Bard's future in the starting rotation? Is this still a worthwhile long-term project to pursue this season? Kevin Youkilis' rehab stint, conversely, will end on Tuesday in Baltimore. With the report late last week that said Bobby Valentine deemed Youkilis to be a "liability" in Spring Training, will Youkilis return to third base? If he does, will he only be in Boston to build up his trade value? Topics such as the Red Sox players demonstrating swagger in the media, and what Don Orsillo and the "Remdawg" truly think of the team are discussed too. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex analyzes the AL East standings through the 1/4 mark of the season, and wonders whether or not the Orioles are for real. Kerry Wood's sudden retirement, and Chris Perez calling out Indians' fans are talked about as well. Post on the message boards at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards. Signing up is free, quick, and easy. Alex is back from vacation! Mike and Alex discuss if Lance Berkman is worthy of Hall of Fame votes, Neftali Feliz's elbow injury and what that means for Roy Oswalt, and Kevin Youkilis's return. Will Youk be traded? The guys discuss a possible trade scenario.
It is episode 500 of "Without a Curse," and Alex opens the show by thanking all of the listeners for tuning into the show over these past 7 years. Alex also thanks executive producer Dylan Richardson for all of the hard work he's put into the show over the past several years. Then...the evisceration of the 12-18 Red Sox commences. It goes from bad to worse with the perception of the team, as Josh Beckett was reportedly spotted golfing with Clay Buchholz last Thursday, two days before he missed his scheduled start due to a sore lat muscle. It has also been reported that Beckett refused to listen to trainers over the last home stand. Has Beckett gone rogue? Even though he's been the best starting pitcher on the team this season, has the time come to consider moving on from Beckett? Alex discusses this past series against the Royals, as the Red Sox dropped 2 of 3 games. Will Middlebrooks is one of the few bright spots, as he continues to perform offensively. Is it premature to begin discussions about Middlebrooks replacing Youkilis at 3rd base? Also, when will Bobby Valentine beginning managing this pitching staff to actually win games instead of treating these games like extended Spring Training? Adrian Gonzalez has been under a lot of scrutiny for his persona this past week. Is that criticism warranted, or has Gonzalez been a problem for the Red Sox? In the "Around the League" segment, Alex looks at the AL East standings and how David Robertson has struggled thus far in the closer's role. It's been another bad week for closers, as the Blue Jays recently replaced Francisco Cordero as closer in their bullpen. Alex also talks about Cole Hamels' decision to intentionally hit Bryce Harper last weekend, and whether or not it was warranted. Thanks again to all who have listened to "Without a Curse" over these past 500 episodes. Post on the message boards at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards. Email Alex at Alexredsox076@aol.com, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1. RIP to Carl Beane...what a tragedy. He and his voice will be missed throughout Fenway Park.
Alex and Mike spend a lot of time discussing the early season struggles of the Boston Red Sox and the Philadelphia Phillies. Another fake trade is floated out there. Some discussion on pitchers' struggles and injuries. And of course, some Fantasy Baseball discussion to close the episode.
Alex discusses this recent stretch of play in which the Red Sox have lost 6 of 7 games against National League opponents. What gives? And no, not having the DH for a bulk of the games should not be used as an excuse Mr. Youkilis... Alex also talks about the decision to finally put Adrian Gonzalez in RF, and the overall lack of production out of RF this season. A decision on what to do with JD Drew needs to be made. Also, is it true that the Red Sox really won't add any payroll at the trade deadline? Plus, what's John Lackey's status? In the "Around the League" segment Alex updates us on the AL East standings and the latest court bankruptcy court proceedings regarding the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Red Sox took 2 out of 3 from the Cubs over the weekend, which was a "novel series..."certainly better than Baltimore coming in for yet another time. It's good to mix it up, even if the Cubs are sporting a lackluster roster these days. Alex talks about the offense continuing to mash, including impressive showings from the middle from the lineup (Gonzalez, Youkilis, Ortiz). On the downside though, will Carl Crawford ever turn it around? Will he even begin to? Alfredo Aceves and Tim Wakfield pitched well, but how much longer can they keep it up? Plus, the Red Sox still continue to search for the 3rd man out of the bullpen in front of Daniel Bard and Jonathan Papelbon. The "post of the day" (www.thesportsstuff.com/boards) is handed out, and in the "Around the League" segment, Alex talks about the 3-way tie atop the AL East and whether there's more than just coincidence surrounding Albert Pujols' slow start... "The Alex Reimer Show" returns live from 3-5 PM EST this Saturday on 1120 AM WBNW Boston and www.moneymattersradio.net!
