This Day in Legal History: Copyright Act of 1976On October 27, 1978, key provisions of the Copyright Act of 1976 officially took effect, modernizing U.S. copyright law for the first time in nearly 70 years. Although signed by President Gerald Ford in 1976, the Act delayed implementation of its core provisions until this date to allow for public and institutional adjustment. The law marked a major shift in how copyright was conceived, particularly by aligning U.S. law more closely with international standards.One of the most important changes was the extension of copyright protection to unpublished works, which had previously existed in a murky legal space. The Act also introduced the concept of works being protected once they were “fixed in a tangible medium of expression”, rather than requiring publication or registration, making protection more automatic and accessible. It moved away from the fixed-term system—previously 28 years with a renewal—toward a life-plus-50-years standard for most works, further updated to life-plus-70 years in 1998.Additionally, the law provided for fair use codification, laying out a four-factor test still used by courts today. Es gibt Menschen, die gar nicht mehr suchen, und auch solche, die zeitlebens auf der Suche sind. Vielleicht ist ein Mittelweg zwischen beiden nicht verkehrt, meint Sebastian Fiebig.

Denn wo euer Schatz ist, da ist auch euer Herz. Eure Hüften sollen gegürtet sein und eure Lampen brennen! Seid wie Menschen, die auf ihren Herrn warten, der von einer Hochzeit zurückkehrt, damit sie ihm sogleich öffnen, wenn er kommt und anklopft! Selig die Knechte, die der Herr wach findet, wenn er kommt! Amen, ich sage euch: Er wird sich gürten, sie am Tisch Platz nehmen lassen und sie der Reihe nach bedienen. Der Knecht, der den Willen seines Herrn kennt, sich aber nicht darum kümmert und nicht danach handelt, der wird viele Schläge bekommen. Von da an begann Jesus, seinen Jüngern zu erklären: Er müsse nach Jerusalem gehen und von den Ältesten und Hohepriestern und Schriftgelehrten vieles erleiden, getötet und am dritten Tag auferweckt werden. Da nahm ihn Petrus beiseite und begann, ihn zurechtzuweisen, und sagte: Das soll Gott verhüten, Herr! Das darf nicht mit dir geschehen! Jesus aber wandte sich um und sagte zu Petrus: Tritt hinter mich, du Satan! Ein Ärgernis bist du mir, denn du hast nicht das im Sinn, was Gott will, sondern was die Menschen wollen.

Martin Selig, the commercial property developer who at one point owned nearly a third of downtown Seattle office space, defaulted on debt backed by three buildings located near the iconic Space Needle.The $135 million debt has been transfered to a special servicer, according to monthly commentary. A spokesperson for the company, called Martin Selig Real Estate, said conversations regarding the debt are ongoing.Selig's business has been confronting the fallout from higher interest rates, which has made refinancing debt tougher. Office demand in the city is struggling to rebound as many companies still allow employees to work from home, even though Amazon.com Inc. workers are back five days a week.
