Our guest this week really doesn't need an introduction. Jamie Campbell has been the host of Blue Jays Central on Sportsnet for years now. He's also a former Alberta broadcaster, having worked in Edmonton during the 1990's. We first chatted with him back on Episode #85 of the show, which was during the pandemic and he was making phone calls to long-time baseball fans who were yearning for a chance to watch their favourite team again. Since then, he's made a trek back here to catch a few WCBL games, is coming to Weyburn for their 2025 Sports Dinner with John Axford on March 15th and, as it turns out, he's turned into a life-long fan.
Some coaching changes for the Packers as we get set for Pro Bowl (?) weekend. The Bucks finish their West Coast trip tonight, trade deadline is less than a week away, and I feel like Jimmy Butler is going to be a Buck. College hoops roundup this week, and John Axford will be inducted into the Brewers' Wall of Honor. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Blake Murphy is joined by Ben Nicholson-Smith to look at the vibes around the team. Afterwards, Michael Baumann (25:15) discusses his in-depth piece on Davis Schneider and Mikey Ajeto analyzes why he thinks Kevin Gausman's stuff isn't the same anymore. Following that, former Blue Jay John Axford (49:47) gives his thoughts on Toronto's bullpen and in the show's final segment, Lindsay Dunn checks in for some fun around the team (1:23:37). While on the Milwaukee Brewers roster in 2011, major league pitcher John Axford created a buzz among indie-rock baseball nerds by forgoing the standard jock jams and using Refused's "New Noise" as his game entrance music. While exposing thousands to the Swedish hardcore band's chaotic screams and atonal, pummeling instrumentation, the choice also garnered some vocal complaints from opposing coaches and TV announcers. Nonetheless, Axford led the entire National League in saves that season, so who knows if some of the song's lyrics ("Good frames won't save bad paintings") don't indeed secretly speak to pitching. Around this same time, his interest in vinyl records began to blossom, leading him to hunt down Japanese Metallica pressings and connect again with his family's classic Christmas LP's. Since then "The Ax Man," as fans have dubbed him, has reached the World Series (with the 2013 St. Louis Cardinals), and done time with the Pirates, Dodgers and Blue Jays, among other organizations. Most recently, Axford represented his home country of Canada in last year's World Baseball Classic. On this episode, we explore how his dad's vintage Edison phonograph somewhat influenced Axford's current big budget stereo set-up, his fandom for LP subscription service Vinyl Me, Please and why he won't clean his grandparents' fingerprints off their old records. We also dive into John's recent trip overseas, to a quaint Dutch village where his great uncle's heroism during WWII is cemented and honored forever. Follow @johnaxford on Instagram. PLUS, music this week from Milwaukee band Dramatic Lovers!
Former big league closer and 2011 Robert Goulet Memorial Mustached American of the Year award recipient John Axford joins the boys for their 400th episode to talk about the role he played in launching The Hall of Very Good Podcast, taking part in the World Baseball Classic, pitching in Milwaukee, his love of photography, reveals his Hollywood crush and, of course, gives a facial hair update. Also…a fan favorite returns!
Blake Murphy kicks off the final Jays Talk Plus of the season with a full recap of the Blue Jays' unceremonious exit from the 2023 MLB playoffs. The Athletic's Kaitlyn McGrath promptly addresses the prominent issue at hand, soon to be known as ‘The Berrios Ultimatum', before taking a look ahead to the looming offseason (12:47). Later on, Blake welcomes former MLB pitcher John Axford to offer his unique viewpoint on the pitching change, and shed some light on the influence of analytics in pre-game choices and when it becomes more fitting to empower the player over the game situation (36:54). In the second hour, ESPN's Kiley McDaniel helps us understand impulsive decisions made at the team level, the importance of trusting the investments made in players to carry out their roles effectively, and how analytics can be communicated more effectively from top management down (51:52). Next up, former Blue Jays Bullpen Coach Matt Buschmann provides an inside look at the behind-the-scenes decision-making processes that fans typically aren't privy to, such as the intricacies and various "what-if" scenarios considered (01:06:34). To wrap up this season of Jays Talk Plus, MLB.com's Jon Morosi helps us put a final bow on the team's early exit from the playoffs, before shifting the focus to team-specific offseason matters including player movement and free agent options (01:24:25). Thank you all for listening - see you next season! In what was a great pitching duel, the Blue Jays managed to pull out a 3-1 victory in Baltimore behind a strong start by José Berríos! Host Blake Murphy is joined in-studio by Sportsnet's own Shi Davidi to break down Berríos' dominant performance on Wednesday that actually flirted with history. Blake continues his week of music alongside Ewan Currie of the Sheepdogs, who chats about where his love for Toronto's baseball team originated and offers his thoughts on this year's squad (34:52). Next, former MLB outfielder and host of the Farm To The Show podcast, Chris Dickerson looks back on his time in the Majors and how some of his former teams are fairing this season, before discussing the environmental work he is doing with Players For The Planet (50:06). Lastly, Blake checks in with former Blue Jays and Team Canada pitcher John Axford, who weighs in on the state of the 2023 Jays and even gives us a few movie recommendations (01:17:32). Blake begins the hour with Hayley McGoldrick of Sportsnet (0:42) who is covering the women's NCAA tournament, why Iowa & UConn are the teams to watch out for and navigating the top Canadians in the tournament. Next, John Axford (14:35), the veteran pitcher for Team Canada recaps the WBC, discusses how he can still throw 95 mph and why it's easier to reach that mark in real games vs. bullpen sessions. Finally, Dan Shulman (30:38) on his new position as the voice of the Blue Jays for the entire season including playoffs after moving on from MLB on ESPN radio after 24 years, he looks ahead to the Jays season, who is a lock in the bullpen and why Otto Lopez has made a case to be on the roster. Finally, over to the NCAA and what he expects from Canadian big man Zach Edey and the entire tournament. The views and opinions expressed in this podcast are those of the hosts and guests and do not necessarily reflect the position of Rogers Sports & Media or any affiliates.
Blake Murphy hosts the first episode of Jays Talk Plus and opens the show by outlining what's on tap and sharing his baseball background, before getting into former Blue Jay catcher Russell Martin announcing his retirement, and what it takes to be a good game caller behind the mask. Ben Shulman, who made his play-by-play debut for the Jays this weekend, stops by to chat about his first experience working those four games, when he knew he wanted to get into broadcasting like his father, and calling games for the Fort Wayne TinCaps (26:25). Later on, Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith shares his thoughts on Jose Berrios' latest outing cut short to just under three innings, the bullpen's weekend workload, if its time to carry three catchers with Gabriel Moreno's looming call up, and if Nate Pearson has a path to help out the pen (50:26). Finally, PUP guitarist Steve Sladkowski jumps on to discuss the creation of the Jays Talk Plus theme music, how he keeps up to date on his favourite sports team while touring on the road, and his encounter with former pitcher John Axford (79:47). The views and opinions expressed in this podcast are those of the hosts and guests and do not necessarily reflect the position of Rogers Sports & Media or any affiliates.
Aaron Ashby wasn't as sharp as he could be in the Brewers' 3-1 win on Wednesday night, but he still pitching into the sixth inning for the first time in his young Big League career and set a new career-high in strikeouts. With the K's, also came a career-high in walks with five of them. Yet even despite all of the traffic against him, Ashby only yielded one hit, not coming until the sixth inning, and then handing it to the bullpen who slammed the door on the Pirates. The Brewers were scalding baseballs left and right but the chilly sub 40º air in Pittsburgh killed the flight of the baseball. Both teams struggled with offense in the conditions, but Tyrone Taylor's 106 MPH line drive into left scored the go-ahead run for Milwaukee in the sixth inning. Josh Hader also made history in this contest, matching John Axford for second place on the Brewers all-time save leaderboard. Wednesday night marked number 106 in his career, and all three outs were recorded via K, same ol Haderade. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! BVM Sports' Isaiah Butler and Logan Hanson discuss the MLB trade deadline, the Chicago Cubs deadline deals, the Milwaukee Brewers acquisition of John Axford and the Mets handling of Kumar Rocker. Co-hosts David Gasper and Matt Carroll are joined this week by Brewers beat writer for The Athletic, Will Sammon. David, Matt, and Will discuss several topics surrounding the Milwaukee Brewers this week, starting off with the wild and crazy 2021 MLB Trade Deadline. At the deadline, the Brewers acquired relievers Daniel Norris and John Curtiss in separate trades and we break down each of those trades, looking at what the Brewers gave up and what they are getting in return. Were the Brewers in on Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo? Will has some inside info. Also, John Axford made a surprise return to Milwaukee this week and it was over just after it got started with a bad elbow injury, and we discuss the circumstances around his return and subsequent departure. Where does the Brewers bullpen go from here with most of it's depth on the shelf? Matt suggests a long-awaited call-up of a minor league star. Finally, with Milwaukee likely to win their division, should the Crew want to get the top seed in the NL or should they go for the second-best record and aim for an easier path forward in October? We discuss that and a lot more on a very fun 50th episode of the Cold Brew Podcast.
Barstool Sports presents the Starting 9, featuring Jared Carrabis and Dallas Braden, the baseball podcast everyone wants but no one else will give you. This week's second episode features a recap of Max Scherzer's debut for the Dodgers; season-ending injuries/surgeries for Anthony Rendon & Tyler Glasnow; Cole Hamels' return to the big leagues; John Axford's brief return; big series this weekend; and the latest installment of our Mt. Rushmore series, this time focusing on the Baltimore Orioles (with a guest appearance from RDT).
COVID-19 has created a carousel of personnel for the Brewers, and yet the team finds itself in the best place it's been all season. Brewers beat reporter Tom Haudricourt and host JR Radcliffe look at the NL Central leaders with less than two months to go. Did the Brewers do enough at the trade deadline relative to their chief NL competitors? When did Brett Anderson turn into such a force of nature? Are there still roster spots for guys like Dan Vogelbach and Travis Shaw? What's next for Keston Hiura? Could Craig Counsell sneak into the Manager of the Year discussion? Plus: the 24-hour whirlwind of John Axford. Music intro: https://www.bensound.com/royalty-free-music.

John Axford? Randall Cobb? Brandon Jennings? What year is it!? The show has fun with the days of yesteryear. Jason Wilde joins the show and shares an interesting thought on Tom Brady/Aaron Rodgers that the show has to dive into. And, it's National Grab Some Nuts Day!
Grant reacts to the Brewers weekend series, and explains how we learned something from each of the 3 games. John Axford is back, and there's a disconnect between the NBA Finals and the NBA Draft. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This Canada Day in Deep Left Field, we have an all-Canadian episode. Mike Wilner talks with Larry Walker, the greatest Canadian position player in MLB history, checks in with John Axford about pitching for Team Canada and working his way back to the big leagues, and convenes a round table of the only Canadians to broadcast Blue Jays play-by-play on the radio with Dan Shulman and Joe Siddall. After having their birdhouse rocked for five straight games, the Blue Jays rebounded against a lesser avian, the Orioles, ending their drought. Drew and Kaitlyn pick through Toronto's much-needed win and zero in on why Semien thought the club's 'W' was "big". Although the team cleansed themselves of their losing curse, are they in a position to go all-in? Drew and Kaitlyn debate Toronto's trajectory, needs, trade targets, et al. as July nears. The duo touch on John Axford joining the bullpen. Lastly, George Springer's return will be marked not only by excitement and collective breath-holding but questions about lineup construction and optimization. Jeff & Kevin share their thoughts on Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s decision to skip this year's Home Run Derby, the Blue Jays receiving clearance to host full-capacity crowds at Sahlen Field, John Axford signing a minor-league deal with Toronto, and the Jays' weekend series in Baltimore. Tyler is back from his soul-searching expedition in the woods and the Blue Jays are back in the win column! This weekend with the Trash Birds didn't look very good right off the hop as the Blue Jays got pounded 7-1 on Friday and then appeared to be on their way to another loss on Saturday. But a six-run rally in the ninth inning led by an incredible at-bat from Bo Bichette saved the day and the team rode a great Hyun Jin Ryu start on Sunday to a series win. We talked about the good from the weekend, like Bo and Ryu, and also the bad from the weekend, mostly the bullpen this episode of BJN Radio. We also touched on how the lineup should look when George Springer returns, how the team could move Gabriel Moreno up the system, and the two new (old?) bullpen additions, John Axford and Jacob Barnes. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This week, I provide injury updates on Ryan Borucki, Julian Merryweather and George Springer. In addition, I'll also discuss the new additions of Jacob Barnes and John Axford, and how the Blue Jays must make up ground in the standings over the next 2-3 weeks.
George Springer is nearly back and there's a very real possibility we see him in the Toronto Blue Jays' two-game set against the Miami Marlins. But his return presents another pressing question -- where do you hit him in the lineup? Mark, Bryson and Jacob banter about that, plus Toronto's bounceback series against the Baltimore Orioles and what relief help like Jacob Barnes and John Axford will do to bolster Toronto's bullpen. I don't know why I had to bleep out the word "leak."A.J. Andrews is so tired of the Blue Jays bullpen. She's tired of having to talk about it in only negative ways. The 2010's was a memorable decade for the Indians. The team reached the playoffs four times, winning a wild card spot once and three AL East titles. The big years were 2013, 2016, 2017 and 2018. 2016 was a magical year as the Indians went all the way to the World Series and reached Game 7 with the game tied in the 9th inning. Some years were tough developmental ones but it was enjoyable to watch young players improve. Star players for the Tribe in the decade included: Matt LaPorta, Asdrubal Cabrera, Jhonny Peralta, Trevor Crowe, Jason Donald, Shelley Duncan (Dave Duncan's son), Andy Marte, Tony Sipp, Chris Perez, Carlos Santana, Jack Hannahan, Michael Brantley, Lonnie Chisenhall, Jim Thome, Corey Kluber, Ubaldo Jimenez, Jason Kipnis, Johnny Damon, Ezequiel Carrera, Josh Tomlin, Zach McAllister, Nick Swisher, Michael Bourn, Jason Giambi, Mike Aviles, Yan Gomes, Kelly Shoppach, Danny Salazar, Trevor Bauer, Carlos Carrasco, Bryan Shaw, David Murphy, Jose Ramirez, Roberto Perez, John Axford, Cody Allen, Francisco Lindor, Gio Urshela, Abraham Almonte, Mike Napoli (Party at Napoli's), Rajai Davis, Tyler Naquin, Coco Crisp, Mike Clevinger, Andrew Miller, Dan Otero, Bradley Zimmer, Jay Bruce, Edwin Encarnacion, Brandon Guyer, Greg Allen, Yonder Alonso, Melky Cabrera, Josh Donaldson, Shane Bieber, Brad Hand, Adam Cimber, Oscar Mercado, Fanmil Reyes, Yasiel Puig, Bobby Bradley, Aaron Civale, Oliver Perez and many more!
Spring Training Toronto Blue Jays Talk With the Jays' finishing up their Spring Training activities in Dunedin, they now head back for a pair of exhibition games in Montreal before kicking off the start of the season for Opening Day. The roster is just about finalized, but still is in need of some tweaking after a few notable injuries have recently plagued the team. Specifically, Ryan Borucki and Ryan Tepera are both battling elbow issues, but are said to be minor. John Axford has been released as a result of an elbow issue of his own, but the Jays plan on resigning him once his rehab is complete. Lastly, Dalton Pompey suffered yet another concussion which may jeopardize his tenure as a Blue Jay. To say that things are shaky even before the start of the season would be an understatement. To discuss these and other topics, host Adam Corsair is joined Ryan Andrews - writer for Jays From The Couch and host of the Locked on Jays Podcast. With injuries to Ryan Tepera and John Axford, Toronto's bullpen plans have imploded. Discussion on that, plus record predictions for this season.
R.J. Anderson of CBS stops by to preview the Tampa Bay Rays in the final AL East Preview episode. He talks about the "opener's" contributions to the Rays' success in 2018, the lack of spending this offseason, the various strengths and weaknesses of the rotation and offence, and visits from ghosts in team hotels. Greg and Josh also discuss the rash of injuries to the bullpen (Ryan Tepera, John Axford, Bud Norris) and the effect that will have on the relief corps that the club takes north, the latest setback for Dalton Pompey, the extension signed by Eloy Jimenez and what that could mean for Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and the potential return of Jordan Romano to the Blue Jays. Finally, they answer listener questions and give out a Gold Star to the Blue Jays.

There ain't nothing like a comeback movie! Two former Blue Jays join Barry and Matt this week and they are armed with hopes of a return to the majors. John Axford, noted movie buff and former Blue Jay, caught up with Barry at a recent Canada Baseball event. The two chat about John's time with the Blue Jays and getting the chance to live out a dream, sitting in the bullpen and observing the proceedings at the Rogers Centre. John's story is a one of rags to riches as he was a non drafted free agent with no signing bonus. He's playing in the majors because he earned every strikeout along the way. The guys discuss movies and what movie John feels Barry should get out and see immediately. Michael Saunders, former Blue Jay all-star, also caught up with Barry and the two chatted about his comeback bid in the majors. Armed with a positive outlook and health on his side, Michael looks to start anew with a brand new team. Barry and he chat about his kids, the support of his family and his new hobby - something that has helped to relieve the stress associated with performing at a high level. Raj Suppiah and Barry chat about Kawhi Leonard and load maintenance. The First Pitch focuses on Roy Halladay's entrance into the MLB Hall of Fame and fans bent out of shape about his family's decision regarding the team Doc enters the hall with. Ask Barry Davis talks Teoscar and the Halladay situation is unpacked. The results of the Fair or Foul Poll are revealed and they get wintry. They just wanna go the distance and we can't wait.

MLB's offseason has been a mess, teams are being extremely disciplined when it comes to what they're willing to offer free agents, and as such a whole lot of free agents remain unsigned, even as we're already on the verge of camps opening. Isn't it obvious what's happening? Just about every team in the league -- many of which are being run by executives out of the Cleveland organization -- is following the same path to slimmer financial outlays. The Shapiro-Atkins diet! Alex begins the show by further analyzing the Josh Beckett situation, and his defiant attitude after the game on Thursday. Beckett's defiance embodies the ignorance around the Red Sox organization, Alex says. The team fails to realize the negative perception around them, and the players don't seem to care about it. Bobby Valentine has been less than advertised in-terms of how he's handled these situations through the media, as he continues to make excuses for the players. Has Valentine been sedated? Do the players know that they're a more valuable commodity than Valentine is, and thus don't respect him? Alex also recaps the 3-game series against Cleveland, in which the Red Sox took 3 of 4 games. The key to the series win was the Red Sox receiving strong performances from the starting pitchers. With nobody running away in the AL East, can the Red Sox survive this disappointing start? Or will the attitude within the clubhouse prevent them doing so? In the "Around the League" segment, Alex looks at the AL East standings, where the Orioles still hold the lead. Alex also looks at how the NL East is unfolding, and tells you why John Axford of the Brewers has become one of his favorite players in the game. Post on the message boards at www.thesportsstuff.com/boards. Email Alex at Alexredsox076@aol.com, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1.
Spring is the time for guessing which players will have that long-awaited breakout season, which teams will surprise everyone and win a pennant, which ones will completely fall apart, and anything else that might happen in a baseball season. But calling them “predictions” doesn’t make them any better than “guesses,” even when the experts are talking.
