One of my all-time favorite TV shows (maybe my very favorite) is AMC's Breaking Bad, so I was stoked to hear creator/showrunner Vince Gilligan was releasing a sequel movie, called El Camino, on Netflix. This week Rima, Dianna, and I cover the movie. Church! Note: We had a few audio problems (some clips and crackles) early on, but it smooths out pretty quick so hang in there. This podcast is made possible by listeners like you (and you too) who have supported us at patreon.com/jasonandkaren. On the next episode of the Patreon-exclusive Jason & Karen Show podcast we're covering the classic National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, which I love and Karen will be seeing for the first time. When it debuted, Better Call Saul, AMC's Breaking Bad prequel about the early years of unscrupulous lawyer Saul Goodman, drew most of its attention for its ties to its parent series, one of the greatest TV dramas of all time. But over its first two years and now in its third, Better Call Saul has carved out its own space as a weird, funky hybrid of legal dramedy and dark crime tale. Lots of its success is thanks to this week's guest, Rhea Seehorn, who plays Kim, a woman who dragged herself up by her bootstraps to a thriving legal career -- only to have said career intersect with those who might tear it all down. Rhea was known mostly for comedic roles prior to Saul, and she joins Todd this week to talk about playing Kim, why she thinks Saul Goodman might be a good person, and all the great TV pilots she made that you'll never get to see. Based on the novel by Kem Nunn "Chance" follows neuropsychiatrist Dr. Eldon Chance through a noir-ish drama involving an abused patient and her monstrous husband. While the acting is fairly decent in the pilot episode, having an incredible cast in Hugh Laurie as the titular character, Gretchen Mol as the dame in distress, and Ethan Suplee as the engaging but odd side kick D, the material falls a bit flat in the pilot. The script is richer with more characters, both annoying and odd, including a usually silent garage attendant and artist Jean-Baptiste and Chance's workplace partner Dr. Haig. The screen pares down the unnecessary for the pilot, mainly focusing on Chance, his strange friendship with D, his patient and obvious love interest Jacklyn Blackstone, and Chance's family - his ex-wife and daughter. Chance is trying hard to be Amazon's Bosch with AMC's Breaking Bad. Hugh Laurie is a remarkable actor who brought his past character House to life with so much angst, edge and sorrow it would seem unlikely that could be repeated. We are willing to give Chance a chance (sorry we had to), but without much needed humor, and too much bizarre drama this does not seem like a show worth investing in.
Lawhead's Court welcomes one of the all time greats in comedy Bill Burr to episode #33. From multiple appearances on "The Late show with David Letterman", to a reoccurring role on AMC's "Breaking Bad", as well as recently being featured in "Rolling Stone" magazine and appearing in a movie with Kevin Costner, Bill is a true friend and fellow sports lover that has virtually done it all. Bill and I debate Boston and Cleveland sports miseries and who's had it worse. We talk about our Rose Bowl excursions, what to eat while tailgating as well as attending other great sporting events with each other over the years. Bill clears up the misconceptions and growing legends of the infamous night in Philly and we tell hilarious tales of the late great Patrice O'Neal. The Lawhead Life relives the time Bill and I were on the set of Anchorman 2 in Atlanta and even how he's still able to be starstruck today. As our friendship hits 10 years that began in Cleveland on New Years, it still lasts today and we will spend it together again on stage at the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles on December 31st. Followed by another Rose Bowl game. So sit back and enjoy the one and only Bill Burr.

With film and television, as with so many other things, music can completely change the mood of an experience. Music can enhance action or drama, imbue a sense of foreboding or elation or provide that tiny extra push needed to draw a tear from a viewer's eye. In the world of AMC's hit drama, Breaking Bad, composer Dave Porter has wholly unique and challenging world to fill with his soundtrack. The downward spiral of Breaking Bad's protagonist from a terminally ill chemistry teacher patsy to a murderous and power hungry drug lord wraps up its fifth and final season this summer, and Porter has scored every single episode. His music has brought the disparate worlds of Walter White and Jesse Pinkman a sense of otherworldly and gritty gravitas with a palette of sounds that mixes vintage analog synthesizers and unorthodox instruments - and like any good film scorer, he does it quickly, creatively and with a journeyman's work ethic.
