Today on another encore edition of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we talk with Rain Pryor, daughter of the great comedian, writer and actor Richard Pryor. When you talk about stand-up comedy, Richard Pryor is a shoe-in to be on the Mount Rushmore of stand-up comedians. To this day, the legacy and humor Richard Pryor left behind is second to none and we talk about that with Rain along with much more. Like her father, Rain does not pull punches and she doesn't have an issue speaking her mind. We speak about race, religion, her Jewish mother, her Madam grandmother, her recent ascent into higher education, how ‘ho's gotta eat too!' as we discuss a wide range of topics. Along the way we learn about her scientist mother, how Rain had been to host Josh Mills' house and he didn't even know it, the chilly relationship she has with one of her father's ex-wives, her many siblings, her dad's drug use, her own search for normalcy and her years as a stand-up and actor in Hollywood. Rain was a refreshing and wonderful interview and it was a huge thrill to talk to her as we REALLY wanted to talk to her for a very long time. So glad we got to and all you have to do is keep listening to the Rarified Heir Podcast like you are already to hear our conversation with Rain. Another child of a celebrity interviewed by the child of a celebrity. Everyone has a story.

Comedian Richard Pryor didn't leave much on the cutting room floor when it came to comedy. Not sex, family, religion, or politics. Certainly not race, or being Black in America. Many of today's comedians can trace their lineage of fearless humor right back to Richard Pryor, and that includes his own progeny. On this episode of Race Unwrapped, I talk with Rain Pryor, Richard Pryor's daughter and an actress, director, and writer in her own right. We reflect on how different the landscape looks for comedians who honestly and authentically talk about race in America today. It's the first episode of our new season, which will unwrap how comedy helps us tackle big and hard topics about race — the vulnerable and the ugly, the joyous and the revelatory.

THE HALL podcast series for “Netflix is a Joke” offers an in-depth look into the lives and careers of the greats of stand-up comedy. This third episode of THE HALL looks at Richard Pryor, whose use of intimately autobiographical material transformed comedy as we know it. Pryor transmuted tragedy into electric stand-up routines, and it's fair to say that every comedian who came after him carries his influence. This episode examines Pryor's stand up, his films, and even his revolutionary, short-lived NBC TV series “The Richard Pryor Show.” To honor Pryor, we speak to Tracy Morgan, Howie Mandel, Reginald Hudlin, Sherri Shepherd, Laraine Newman, Richard's daughter Rain Pryor and more.

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Rain Pryor, daughter of legendary comedian Richard Pryor. Like many of our episodes, this one covers a lot of ground and thankfully, Rain was not only game for all of it but she was thoughtful, funny and eloquent talking about a myriad of subjects. We touch upon everything from her years growing up in a household where words like Motherfucker were used as exclamation points, her favorite films of her father's career, her own career as a performer, stand-up comedian, author, activist, producer and speaker and her astronomer mother. Wait what? Yes, it's true. She also is a mother and a cancer survivor. It's a deep and deeply funny conversation with Rain because we can touch on everything from how she not only tried sushi for the first time with comedian Danny Kaye (and that that he actually made it for her) but also her stint running for Baltimore City Council. Like her one woman show, Fried Chicken and Latkas, about her black and Jewish roots, Rain is a dichotomy of two worlds. The thinker who gets certified from Cornell as well as the choice to follow her dad's advice and do stand-up. It's a great conversation where serious subjects lead to lighter moments (or vice versa) and odd coincidences like how she has been Josh's house and he never knew it. We've wanted to talk to her for so long and it's finally here. Ladies and gentlemen, we bring you, the awesome Rain Pryor.

Rain Pryor is many things: an actress, singer, performer, comedian, mother, one-time city council candidate in the City of Baltimore... and, yes, daughter of Richard Pryor, the famous comedian. Her mother, Shelley Bonus, a former go-go-dancer turned astronomer, was Jewish; Rain grew up studying torah with her grandfather and learning to make latkes with her bubbe. Rain has been outspoken about her upbringing and cultural identity, which featured prominently in her acclaimed autobiographical one-woman show, Fried Chicken & Latkes. Yet despite her activism, plainspoken personality and deep appreciation of her Jewish identity, like many Jews of colour, she's still questioned in Jewish spaces. Lee Camp Is A Comedian & National TV Host Lee Camp is the head writer and host of the national TV show Redacted Tonight with Lee Camp on RT America. He's a former contributor to The Onion, former staff humor writer for the Huffington Post, and his web series “Moment of Clarity” has been viewed by millions. He's toured the country and the world with his fierce brand of standup comedy, and George Carlin's daughter Kelly said he's one of the few comics keeping her father's torch lit. Bill Hicks's brother Steve said Lee is one of only a handful with Bill's “message and passion.” In a recent interview Bill Hicks's brother Steve Hicks was asked whether he had favorite comedians who were inspired by Bill. Here is what he said: “I know Doug Stanhope is often cited as someone in the vein of Bill; Lee Camp and Jamie Kilstein are two others in the US that are carrying on with the message and the passion. Although I know they are admirers of Bill, it is important to note that they are their own people doing it their own way. All three of these are very good and I think anyone out there who is actually ‘trying to do Bill' falls very flat. You can't copy someone that was such an individual and these three guys aren't doing that. It's just in the spirit maybe but they are all excellent doing it their way, which is how it should be.” “This up-and-coming US star is already developing a reputation for fearless political comedy, with some calling him an heir to the crown of the late, great George Carlin. He gets our seal of approval.” –Time Out Sydney “Gets the crowd roaring!” –Rolling Stone “For those comedy fans still in mourning for Bill Hicks 18 years on, you'll find plenty to enjoy in the work of DC-born stand-up Lee Camp. Like Hicks, Camp has a visceral disregard for big business and big politics, and speaks his mind on everything from abortion rights to the evils of the modern media. However, where Hicks was more of a commentator who stayed above the fray, Camp is much closer to British activist-comics like Mark Thomas, a real-life serial protester.” –The Guardian “Like Jon Stewart from the Daily Show but with sharper teeth.” –the Herald “What if all the baggage and bullshit of our society were absorbed into the conscience of one man? A man who refused to accept this ‘Normality' we wade through…what kind of time-bomb would emerge? Well, as Evolution would have it in its process of Self-Correction, Lee Camp is that embodied ‘Time-Bomb of Reason' – ready to destroy anything that seeks to pollute our culture and restrict our possibility as a species.” –Peter Joseph (creator of the Zeitgeist Movement) “Lee Camp is an integral part of a longstanding satirical tradition. He has the rare ability to make you laugh and think simultaneously.” –Paul Krassner “Lee is the Che Guevara of comedy. Congrats to him on his balls and integrity. Everything he does is SO good. We need more comedians with his kind of fearlessness. It's so rare to find such artful, thoughtful passion in comedy these days. …or in life. He's waiting for a generation to catch up with him.” –Paul Provenza “Lee is totally inspiring. I kinda wanna be like him when I grow up.” –Rain Pryor (actor, comedian, daughter of Richard Pryor) “Lee Camp has found the hole in America's brain where reason has been replaced by Wal-Mart. Lee's rants channel the gunk oozing out. You have to admit, that's why he's so fucking funny.” — Greg Palast “One night I attended a Laughing Liberally comedy show. There was one funny comedian there – Lee Camp.” –Matt Labash (Conservative reporter for the right-wing publication The Weekly Standard) Website Link:

What do you do when you're born to legendary comedian Richard Pryor and white Jewish go-go dancer Shelley Bonus in Los Angeles, California, spending your formative years navigating what it's like to be Black and Jewish? You write a show about it! Rain Pryor joins host Robin Milling for a backstage chat about her one-woman show, Fried Chicken & Latkes, now playing at the National Black Theater in Harlem, New York. On stage Rain tells poignant tales of her childhood, growing up in Beverly Hills in the heyday of the 60s and 70s, expertly weaving in the voices of her mother, her Bubby, her father's grandmother, and her dad. There was the time when she was five and someone called her the 'N' word, and all through her teenage years valley girls bullied her just because she looked different. She tells Robin, 'Growing up in Beverly Hills there weren't kids like me. I think I just wanted to feel normal. It wasn't like I wanted to be white. I didn't want to be black. I just wanted to be OK to be me and it wasn't. I was bullied when kids would chase me down the street throwing rocks at me; that's bullying. It felt like I was running for my life through Beverly Hills! And I literally hid in bushes.' And then there are the stories of her famous father who had Miles Davis play her a lullaby to send her to dreamland, and when she first realized his comic genius. Father and daughter relationships can be tricky after divorce, but Rain also had to deal with sometimes coming second to her dad's fame and career. She tells Robin how his presence is still strongly felt even 10 years after his death, and dedicates the show to his memory.
