It's EV News Briefly for Thursday 23rd March. I'll be back as usual at 5pm UK time, that's Midday Eastern, for the full podcast.  Patreon supporters get the episodes as soon as they're ready AND ad free. You can be like them by clicking here. Ford expects its EV business unit to lose $3 billion in 2023, with total losses of $6 billion projected from 2021-2023, though it aims to build 2 million electric vehicles by late 2026. Tesla expects to lose the full $7,500 federal tax credit on its cheapest electric car, the Model 3 Standard Range, due to its battery cells being sourced from China, which would make it ineligible for the new tax credit program. The Biden administration will release proposed guidance next week for the domestic sourcing requirements for EVs to qualify for the Inflation Reduction Act's clean energy incentives, which limit tax credits to EVs made using domestically produced minerals and batteries. The Cadillac Lyriq has been released in China, and a sales team has been offering free test drives of the Lyriq at a Tesla Supercharger station in Shanghai to increase public interest. Hyundai and Volkswagen's charging subsidiary Electrify America have agreed to provide two years of complimentary charging sessions to first-time owners of the Ioniq 6 EV at Electrify America's DC fast chargers. Audi's Q8 E-Tron SUV has received an improved battery range, with maximum claimed ranges of 281 and 343 miles, up from 249 miles in the previous model. Rivian is releasing a new Over-the-Air update that will allow owners to use Tesla's Supercharger Network with their Magic Dock, and the update includes a free one-year trial of TuneIn Premium, Plug and Charge functionality, and various other improvements. Cupra plans to launch larger premium EVs targeting the North American market from 2028, and these vehicles will be based on the Volkswagen Group's SSP platform. CATL has begun series production of its new Qilin battery system, which has the potential to power cars to a range of 622 miles and is promised to offer 622 miles of range in the Zeekr 001 model. Tesla has opened many of its Superchargers in Europe for use by other electric car brands, increasing the number of approved stations significantly. The used prices of Tesla's Model 3 vehicle have dropped by 21.5% since last year's peak and by more than $11,000 on average, due to Tesla offering discounts and the new federal EV tax credit. Tesla is offering an Extended Service Agreement (ESA) to select S3XY models, extending specific coverage by up to 2 years or 25,000 miles, covering repair and replacement of parts needed to correct defects in materials or workmanship. The proposed Electric Bicycle Incentive Kickstart for the Environment Act has the potential to encourage more people to switch from gasoline cars to e-bikes in the effort to reduce greenhouse gases and combat climate change. Nissan Leaf owners in the UK were able to use their vehicles' batteries to store and return energy to the grid, and the potential for electric cars to contribute to the UK's energy security is enormous. LEVC has reached a significant milestone of producing its 10,000th vehicle at their facility in Ansty, Coventry, UK, with the TX electric taxi sold in multiple global markets, representing more than 40% of all black cabs in London. Umicore has received European Union approval for its joint venture with the PowerCo business unit of the Volkswagen Group, which aims to produce cathode active materials and precursor materials sufficient to meet an annual production capacity capable of powering about 2.2 million electric vehicles.

In this episode we look at two types of storyteller. First, we have the "bard" who composes songs to honour the deeds and exploits of the great (and not so great) among us. In this case, a certain gentleman called "Thady Quill" had a song composed in his honour which has lived on long past himself. We then move on to a storyteller who was immortalised in the book "The Tailor and Ansty". With plenty of Irish music and song to keep things lively along the way from the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem. Enjoy!

OUTSIDE THE BOARDS™ PODCASTSEASON #2 | EPISODE #7: Oliver "Olly" HughesRECORDED: February 1st, 2022On this Episode of Outside The Boards, after 10 years at the helm, I'm thrilled to welcome Oliver “Olly” Hughes, the Deputy Chief of the Hurlingham Polo Association. The governoring body for the sport of polo in the United Kingdom and Ireland.Way back in the mid 1980s Olly was introduced to polo whilst in the Cotswold Pony Club. Although the opportunities to play were restricted to the few summer weeks of the Pony Club Polo season, Olly was well and truly bitten by the bug. After the culmination of a successful Pony Club career, and a brief flirtation with higher education, he headed to South America to be immersed in polo. A career in polo developed from there and having achieved a three goal handicap he was lucky enough to work for the likes of Black Bears, Ellerston and Bulldogs Polo Teams and has also managed Ansty, Checkendon and most recently Beaufort Polo Clubs. Along the way he gained experience of working in the “real” world when he managed health clubs on behalf of two hotel chains. He joined the HPA office in 2012 and lives near Cirencester with his wife and two teenage children. Olly has done some incredible things for the sport in the UK in the last 10 years, most notably the creation of the Hurlingham Polo Associaiton's own clothing line. Olly is a great friend and I feel honored to have gotten to know him more on this episode, and excited to watch him and the Hurlingham Polo Association do great things for the sport in the next decade.WELCOME TO OUTSIDE THE BOARDS™ PODCASTThe OTB™ Podcast was created with the goal of introducing listeners to people, places and stories and provide a unique behind the scenes perspective of the sport of polo that breaks all the common stereotypes. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.     VOLVO TO DESIGN AND DEVELOP ELECTRIC MOTORS IN-HOUSE "Volvo says that bringing the development of electric motors in-house will allow its engineers to make further gains in terms of energy efficiency and overall performance and further optimise electric motors and the entire electric driveline in its new model The OEM has opened a new electric motor lab in Shanghai, China in addition to ongoing e-motor development in Gothenburg, Sweden, and state-of-the-art battery labs in China and Sweden" says Automotive Manufacturing Solutions.com: "The Shanghai electric motor lab started operations last month and will focus on electric motor development for use in fully electric and hybrid cars based on Volvo’s forthcoming SPA 2 modular vehicle architecture."   And Jalopnik notes: "Because the thing about doing things in-house is that doing everything in-house is virtually impossible. Tesla has always tried to do just that but it still gets its batteries from Panasonic; it still puts Goodyears on new Model Ys; it still has scores of other suppliers, like every other mass-producer of cars in the world. Which is a comment less about Tesla than about Volvo and every other automaker in that, at the end of the day, the vast majority of consumers don’t really care."   https://www.automotivemanufacturingsolutions.com/emobility/volvo-to-design-and-develop-electric-motors-in-house/41245.article   https://jalopnik.com/volvo-is-doing-a-tesla-imitation-1845555115   LEVC VN5 TURNS LIKE A LONDON TAXI "LEVC (London Electric Vehicle Company) today announces the start of production for its new electric van, VN5.  The new model is designed, engineered and manufactured at LEVC’s award-winning production plant in Ansty, Coventry – the UK’s only dedicated electric vehicle factory." says Fleetpoinht: "Based on the same architecture and proven eCity technology as LEVC’s TX electric taxi, VN5 can achieve a pure EV range of over 60 miles (98 km) and a total flexible range of over 300 miles (489 km). In addition, VN5 utilises the same strong, lightweight bonded aluminium monocoque & SMC construction – designed to last twice as long as the competition and has a class-leading turning circle of just 10.1m for unrivalled mobility in busy city environments.  With up to 5.5m3 cargo capacity, VN5 easily accommodates two Euro sized pallets, and offers a gross payload of up to 830kg.  It has been built with a large side-loading door (enabling a pallet to be side-loaded) and a 60/40 split door at the rear to make loading and unloading easy for the driver."   https://www.fleetpoint.org/levc/vn5/levc-vn5-electric-van-starts-production/   NIO: NEW BATTERY FOR 900KM OF RANGE & EUROPEAN LAUNCH "According to founder William Li Bin, the Chinese electric car manufacturer Nio is currently working on a battery pack with a capacity of 150 kWh, which should enable ranges of over 900 kilometres. Besides, the plans for a European launch in 2021 may become concrete." says electrive: "According to a report by CN Tech Post, Nio founder William Li Bin made the statement about the 150 kWh battery at a meeting of the ‘EP Club’, a club of Nio drivers. With such a battery, Nio would not only more than double the current range of a Nio ES6 (430 kilometres in the outdated NEDC), but would also match the range of combustion engines and hybrids. Besides, according to Gasgoo, the plans for a sales launch in Europe should become more concrete. In a project with the code name ‘Marco Polo’, Nio is said to have hired many employees for export business. The main focus would be on the two electric SUV models ES6 and ES8, Gasgoo suggests, of which 7,000 units are to be sold in Europe within two years."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/11/02/nio-announces-150-kwh-battery-pack-european-launch/   IONITY REVEALS NETWORK USAGE OVER THE PAST 2 YEARS "IONITY, the European fast charging network, has revealed usage of the network in terms of the amount of energy dispensed to electric cars over the two years - between September 2018 and September 2020. here were 150 stations in October 2019, 200 in January 2020 and 250 in July 2020 and as of now it's almost 300. During that period, energy sales doubled (September 2019 vs 2020)." notes InsideEVs: "The usage chart shows us also one more important thing - seasonality. All the fast charging infrastructure has to be envisioned for peak periods, which usually happens to be holidays, when people takes more long-distance trips. If a network will not take it into account, we will see long queues to chargers in peak periods, which occasionally happens also to Superchargers."   IONITY said: The ongoing corona pandemic has led to a change in mobility behaviour in Europe and helped the e-mobility sector to further gain traction. Whether this is because:   people who already own EVs (electric vehicles) seem to increase their usage. there is a high demand for sustainable mobility in order to travel emission-free and in a carbon-neutral way. public transports such as trains, planes and busses seem to no longer be the safe way of travelling during the pandemic. more countries are encouraging the purchase of electric vehicles by providing incentives.   https://insideevs.com/news/452284/ionity-network-usage-chart/   https://ionity.eu/_Resources/Persistent/6eff8e447f6fb9f04a10672e27bba2716e2bb498/20201027%20EV%20driving%20on%20the%20rise.pdf   SUNDERLAND'S NISSAN PLANT TO BUILD NEW ELECTRIC QASHQAI MODEL "It is understood the Sunderland site will produce the new e-POWER model. Perfect Warm-Ups & Badger Beer

In the second episode of our new-look podcast, we are discussing perfect warm-ups and drinking Badger beer. Well, we call it badger beer, but actually, the brewery is called Hall & Woodhouse brewery. We really enjoyed ourselves during this podcast, mostly thanks to the excellent beers! We're loving this 30-minute format, it's easier to listen to, and more importantly - it is a LOT quicker to perform. Perfect Warm-Ups I've changed my mind a lot about warm-ups over the years, when I started training myself I thought that they were very important. Always getting onto that Cross-trainer before a session could truly begin. After a while, I grew bored of spending 5-10 minutes per session mindlessly pedalling and started entering the gym "cold". This was fine, I was young, wasn't lifting heavy, and had no previous injuries. These days I walk briskly to the gym before performing multiple practice sets for a great warm-up. A practice set is where you perform the exercise you were planning on doing (a bench press for example) with a weight that is significantly lighter. Think about it, you are working the correct muscles required for the exercise, practising the movements, and getting a feel for the equipment. But there are a couple of exercises that I do add in as a warm-up, which aren't practice set exercises. For upper body, I perform face-pulls, a great exercise using a cable machine. For the lower body, I will perform some dumbbell goblet squats. They are light, easy to do, and they warm you up great before performing barbell squats, or deadlifts. They are crucial for perfect warm-ups. Badger Beers: Hall & Woodhouse Brewery The beers we drank in this podcast all came from the Hall & Woodhouse brewery in Dorset. The brewery was originally opened in 1777 in the village of Ansty. It was moved to Blandford St Mary in 1899 and has stayed there ever since. The beers that we tried were Golden Champion and Fursty Ferret. They also sell Furkin Fox and Golden Glory. This brewery has always been a favourite of mine, and the beers were a perfect choice for our Best of England Beers. Next Time So a nice and quick podcast on perfect warm-ups and English beer, Badger Beers are a great rival for last week's Newcastle Brown Ales. In our next episode, we will be drinking beer from Oakham Ales and discussing rest periods.
