Shoot us a Text.Today we're talking about the legendary stunts of the Detroit Auto Show, the stabilization of used car prices after pandemic volatility, and Starbucks shutting down stores for a barista reboot under its new CEO.The Detroit Auto Show has long been a stage for iconic moments, from smashing Jeeps through glass to launching entire luxury brands. Once the epicenter of automotive innovation, the event has struggled in recent years to maintain relevance amid rising costs, digital marketing trends, and competing global expos.During the '90s and early 2000s, the show was the must-attend event for automakers and media, with 4,000 journalists. Some theatrical reveals included Bob Lutz driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee through a plate glass window in 1992, a Dodge Ram crashing through cardboard in 1993, Kermit the Frog driving a minivan in 1995, and a cattle drive introducing the 2009 Dodge Ram.Automakers invested millions in jaw-dropping spectacles, like Cirque du Soleil performances and celebrity appearances, making it a race to outdo each other every year. The rise of CES and specialty expos, coupled with automakers shifting to digital-first marketing strategies, diluted the Detroit show's dominance. The Detroit Auto Show has since returned to its January roots, focusing on engaging consumers rather than relying on the media spectacle it once was."The world has changed. That is reflected in the auto show," said David Cole, chairman emeritus of the Center for Automotive Research. This year's show will be January 10 to January 20, 2025, at Huntington Place in DetroitUsed vehicle prices are expected to stabilize further in 2025, bringing relief to buyers after years of pandemic-induced volatility. While still higher than pre-pandemic levels, prices are trending toward normalization.Cox Automotive predicts wholesale prices will end 2025 up 1.4% compared to December 2024.Prices surged 46.6% in 2021 and 14.2% in 2020 but dropped sharply in 2022 and 2023.Retail prices remain slow to decline, with December's average listing at $25,565, down 3% year over year.Used vehicle sales are forecast to rise 1% in 2025, with 20.1 million retail sales.Starbucks is hosting a mandatory three-hour training session later this month as part of CEO Brian Niccol's effort to revitalize the brand. Niccol's said in a session description,“We will refocus on what has always set Starbucks apart — a welcoming coffeehouse,” The training, titled "Welcome Back to Starbucks," will run from January 21-26, with employees attending at staggered times.Stores may close dining rooms but keep drive-thrus open to accommodate the sessions.Niccol, known for his turnaround at Chipotle, has already introduced changes like faster drink prep and self-service condiment bars.Employees hope for additional workflow adjustments to streamline operations and better balance quick Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

The car industry across the European Union employs over thirteen million people, both directly and indirectly, that's around six percent of the bloc's workforce. But in recent years, Europe's manufacturers have been struggling to cope with issues like economic downturns, clean energy requirements and the digital revolution. Some of the oldest, biggest carmakers are considering plant closures and job cuts in order to try and stay afloat. They are also facing fierce competition in the electric vehicle market from China, who have taken a lead in producing cars that are much more competitively priced and equipped with much more sophisticated technology. China's own economy has been flagging, so the EU provides it with its largest overseas market in terms of the electric car industry. But now, in a bid to protect their own car industry, the EU has introduced tariffs on electric cars made in China. These tariffs are set to rise from ten percent up to forty five percent for the next five years. Beijing has condemned them as protectionist and there are concerns that it could spark a trade war between Brussels and Beijing. So, on this week's Inquiry, we're asking ‘Is Europe's car industry at a crossroads?' From Italy to North Carolina, we bring you the tales of another weekend with many red flags. Not to say it wasn't a successful weekend on all accounts, the first ever WCR race round took place on the world stage in Italy with none other than Mallory Dobbs representing the USA and securing a successful weekend. The King of Brakes Toprak himself demonstrated a perfect weekend proving that he is in fact meshing quite well with the M1000RR, while maintaining his title by doing not one but 2 stoppies down the front straight to win the race!! In NC this weekend we completed another successful trackday at a small racetrack known as the North Carolina Circuit for Automotive Research or NCCAR, although this weekend we'll refer to it as NCBIKE!! Red flags haunted us but that didn't stop us from having a great fast weekend. He demanded that lawmakers approve his request for tens of billions in military and economic assistance. Republicans have said they are not willing to countenance another major package of aid unless the administration takes action on the southern border. But Biden said Republicans were handing Russian President Vladimir Putin a gift. 'This cannot wait,' he said in a televised address. 'Congress needs to pass supplemental funding for Ukraine before they break for the holiday recess, simple as that, frankly.' Biden presses Congress to pass Ukraine aid to prevent Russian win Play 1:24-3:00 He accused Republicans of holding aid 'hostage' over the border and of being willing to 'kneecap' Ukrainian forces on the battlefield But he hinted that he was ready to do a deal with Republicans, even if they would have to accept they were not going to get everything they wanted. Biden's speech came soon after he held a video call with leaders of the Group of Seven advanced democracies, who have all backed Ukraine, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Biden has asked Congress for more than $100 billion to fund conflicts in Ukraine and Israel, as well as other matters of national security. However, Republicans on Capitol Hill have resisted the request, some insisting that Biden first take measures to secure the nation's southern border. The White House has warned repeatedly of the consequences of failing to back Ukraine. In a blunt letter sent to Congress on Monday, Office of Management and Budget Director Shalanda Young wrote: 'We are out of money to support Ukraine in this fight. This isn't a next year problem. The time to help a democratic Ukraine fight against Russian aggression is right now. However, Republican leaders quickly dug in. Speaker Mike Johnson promised there would be no funding for Ukraine without 'transformative' border security provisions. https://americanmilitarynews.com/2023/12/us-troops-suing-govt-for-billions-in-backpay-over-covid-vaccine-mandate/ US troops suing gov’t for ‘billions’ in backpay over Covid vaccine mandate In a groundbreaking development, three lawsuits with the potential for a class action suit are being filed on behalf of former United States service members. The service members, represented by attorneys Dale Saran, Andy Meyer, and Brandon Johnson, allege they were unjustly discharged or prevented from drilling, causing significant financial loss, as a result of the Biden administration’s vaccine mandate policies. According to Breitbart, the lawsuits, which are currently in the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, could involve backpay claims totaling billions of dollars. Saran, a retired Marine, emphasized the massive scale of the compensation, telling Breitbart, “It’s worth billions. That’s just flat-out. That’s what it is in backpay. It’s billions of dollars.” This statement underscores the potential magnitude of the lawsuit’s financial implications for the Department of Defense. The court, with its roots in the Reconstruction Era, is known for handling cases of illegal discharge and pay-related grievances in the military. Saran explained its unique role, saying that the Court of Claims is where service members can go when they have a claim and say, “Hey, I was illegally discharged, or the military did something to impede my pay.” According to Breitbart, the lawsuits allege that 80,000 to 100,000 service members, including both active-duty personnel and reservists, were impacted by the Biden administration’s actions. Saran detailed the lack of due process in the cases, noting, “They were basically [without] the benefit of any due process. No boards were held. They didn’t hold any administrative separation boards; they didn’t hold any hearings. They didn’t do any federal recognition boards; none of the administrative or judicial procedures were used. They just flat-out did it.” One notable case involves former Coast Guard member Zach Loesch, who was commended by President Joe Biden for his heroics during Hurricane Ian but faced discharge for not complying with a vaccine mandate, according to Breitbart. The claims also involve the repayment of enlistment bonuses, adding to the financial stakes. Saran stated, “Not only did they throw them out — unceremoniously [and] wrongfully — now they’re…without a job instantly, no separation pay, none of that. And instead, they’re standing out in the cold, and worse yet, here comes the government…here comes the debt collectors. Now you owe us money.” Saran drew parallels between the current situation with the service members who were negatively impacted by the COVID-19 vaccine mandate policies and his past experience defending service members who refused the Anthrax vaccine in the late 1990s. “I did some work on the lawsuit Doe v. Rumsfeld that shut down the anthrax vaccine,” he said. “And so…here we are, second go around again, 15 years in, and we’re right back at the mass vaccination of unlicensed vaccines like the government didn’t learn last time.” According to Saran, those interested in more information about the current lawsuits can learn more at militarybackpay.com. The ongoing legal battle, with cases like Bassen v. USA, Botello v. USA, and Harkins v. USA, marks a significant moment in military legal history, raising questions about due process, financial responsibility, and the broader implications for the rights of U.S. service members. https://www.foxnews.com/world/israel-constructs-large-pumps-flood-hamas-terror-tunnels-seawater-wall-street-journal Israel constructs large pumps to flood Hamas terror tunnels with seawater The Israeli military has assembled several large pumps it could use to flood the Hamas tunnels beneath the Gaza Strip with seawater, driving out terrorists hiding there, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing U.S. officials. Construction of five large seawater pumps was completed in November about one mile north of the Al-Shati refugee camp. Each pump is capable of drawing water from the Mediterranean Sea and can move thousands of cubic meters of water per hour, which would flood the tunnels within weeks, the report said. Israel has not yet committed to the plan, and it is unclear whether it would attempt to flood the tunnels while there are still hostages, including Americans, held by Hamas. The Palestinian terror group took some 240 people captive during the Oct. 7 attack on Israel and brought them back to the Gaza Strip. According to the report, Israel has identified about 800 tunnels beneath Gaza that Hamas has used to move fighters, store weapons and plan terror attacks on Israel. However, Israeli officials believe the tunnel network is much larger. By flooding the tunnels over several weeks, Israel would enable Hamas terrorists and potentially hostages to move out, the outlet reported, citing a source familiar with the plan. "We are not sure how successful pumping will be since nobody knows the details of the tunnels and the ground around them," the source said. "It’s impossible to know if that will be effective because we don’t know how seawater will drain in tunnels no one has been in before." The Wall Street Journal said an Israel Defense Forces official declined to comment on the flooding plan, but said: "The IDF is operating to dismantle Hamas’s terror capabilities in various ways, using different military and technological tools." Welcome to Wednesday as we're wheels up for Used Car Week, but first we're talking about Joe Biden's upcoming visit with Shawn Fein. We also talk about the ongoing battle over whether to keep AM radio in cars or not. Finally, we'll visit with our new friend GROK again. Joe Biden is set to meet with UAW President Shawn Fain on Thursday to discuss Stellantis' reopening of an Illinois assembly plant in a show of commitment to U.S. manufacturing and job creationBiden had weighed in during the strike in favor of the union and called Fain after the contract was reachedStellantis plans a $3.2 billion investment in a new battery plant and a $1.5 billion investment in a mid-size truck factory in Illinois. The investments are part of a labor agreement adding 5,000 U.S. jobs by 2028, pending ratification.President Biden lauded the labor agreements, emphasizing their significance in strengthening the U.S. auto industry and expanding domestic manufacturing capabilities.Fain has yet to endorse Biden in his 2024 reelection bidA report from the Center for Automotive Research outlines the potential cost to automakers of maintaining AM radio functionality in electric vehicles due to electromagnetic interference, and it's A LOT. Costs to mitigate interference with AM radio in EVs could total as much as $3.8 billion by 2030.Technical solutions like shielding and filtering add costs and may affect vehicle weight and battery range and could add up to $70 in cost to every vehicleLegislative efforts are pushing to keep AM radio in new vehicles, citing its importance in emergencies. The automakers are pushing back…the broadcaster's alliance wants to keep it…John Bozzella, CEO of the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, argues that mandating AM radio in EVs is unwarranted and would incur extra costs for consumers.Bozzella contrasts the necessity of mandated safety features like airbags and seat belts with the imposition of analog AM radio tuners, a move he says is unprecedented by the government…"The government has never gone there before,"On the heels of revealing AI chatbot Grok, Elon Musk has announced that Tesla will integrate the AI into its vehicles.A "smaller quantized" version of Grok AI is reported to run natively in Tesla vehicles, utilizing the cars' local computing power for a seamless in-car user experience.Musk envisions Tesla vehicles to be self-sufficient in anticipating and addressing owner needs, with Grok AI becoming a key component in realizing this future.Replying to an X thread about the integration, Musk said, "Provided our vehicle AI computer is able to run the model, Tesla will probably have the most amount of true usable inference compute on Earth." TESLA WILL MOVE ITS HEADQUARTERS TO TEXAS ""I'm excited to announce that we're moving our headquarters to Austin, Texas," CEO Elon Musk said Thursday during a Tesla shareholders meeting. The electric car company is currently based in Palo Alto, California, near its original headquarters in San Carlos, and its first factory, in Fremont. Musk said Thursday that there is a "limit to how big you can scale in the Bay area."" reported CNN Business: "He cited housing affordability and the long commutes it can create as hurdles for its current location, and said the Austin factory is five minutes from the airport and 15 minutes from downtown. The median home price in Palo Alto is $3.3 million" "Texas has been actively recruiting companies via its Texas Economic Development Act offering tax breaks to put new facilities in the state. Austin, with a top tech university and cultural events like South by Southwest, is a draw for tech employers." says CNBC: "Tesla has not been happy with one set of regulations in Texas at least. The state bans direct sales of cars. Instead, car companies sell their vehicles through independent, franchised dealerships there. In other states where similar laws apply Tesla has fought to change the rules or exploited some loopholes." The main point is that the global vehicle fleet stands at about 2 billion units, and not even 1% is all-electric yet." reported InsideEVs: "Assuming that 100% of new vehicles would be electric, at 100 million per year, it would still take 20 years from now to replace 2 billion vehicles. This 20-year period might be considered as the age of a vehicle until it finally goes to a junk yard." " says Fortune.com: "“We've had a fantastic year, we had record vehicle deliveries,” Musk told Tesla's annual shareholder meeting in Austin, Texas on Thursday. “It looks like we have a good chance of maintaining that. Basically, if we can get the chips we can do it. Hopefully this chip shortage will alleviate soon but I feel confident of being able to maintain something like at least above 50% for quite a while.” “One of the biggest challenges we had in Q3 was can we get enough ships,” he said. “There was a huge ship shortage.” Musk said the “significant cost pressure” in the supply chain had forced Tesla to increase car prices, at least temporarily. " One of the reasons any company choosed to located is incentives and subsidies, on that subject: "The German government is expected to decide before the end of the year just how much state aid Tesla will receive for its battery cell unit. The company is investing about €5 billion ($5.8 billion) in the plant. The German daily Tagesspiegel reports that this unusually high investment "means that the US car manufacturer can count on German state subsidies of €1.14 billion."" Thousands of people were brought in by special shuttle buses, with long queues forming at the Gruenheide site of the US electric vehicle maker's first European factory." reported Yahoo! News: "Demonstrators were already on the scene on Saturday morning, with a few people bearing signs like "Stop Tesla" and "water and forest aren't for private profit" gathered around 100 metres (yards) from the site. On the same 300-hectare plot, Musk also plans to build "the world's biggest battery factory". And the site will equally boast the "world's largest die-casting machine", said Ferdinand Dudenhoeffer, director of the Center for Automotive Research in Germany. In the event that the factory is not approved, the carmaker will be compelled to dismantle the entire works at its own cost. Despite the country's reputation for efficiency, major infrastructure projects are often slowed down by excess bureaucracy. Berlin's new international airport opened in October 2020, eight years later than first planned." And what did the German press have to say? "In guided tours lasting an hour and a half each, local residents were able to watch the whole production process involved in making a Tesla electric car such as the Model Y." saus DW.com: "People took their time to see what was going on in the stamping and casting units and later in the paint shop and assembly and quality control sections of the huge plant. Wherever questions arose, Tesla employees were on hand to answer them. Visitors were told that 80% of the workforce will be from Germany and 20% from 50 other countries. Also of some interest: 80% of all parts used in the Grünheide plant will come from European suppliers." That concerns batteries, automotive chips, and more. As Elon put it at one point, no matter how many more vehicle models the company was selling, it wouldn't be able to deliver more units this year — the constraint is supplies, not demand." writes Zach at Clean Technica: "With that in mind, and due to how many batteries and chips the Semi needs, it is being delayed until these supply chains ramp up, which is expected to be in 2023 at the moment. Similarly, the Tesla Cybertruck is delayed until the end of 2022 for all the same reasons. " Elon Musk said: "“I think most likely what we'll see is Cybertruck start production in the next year, and then reach volume production in 2023. And, hopefully, we can also be producing the Semi and the new Roadster in ‘23 as well. So, we should be through our severe supply chain shortages in ‘23. I'm optimistic that that will be the case.”" He also said the release date of the new Roadster is likely 2023. However, Tesla didn't release an adapter that connected to its proprietary charger to convert CCS charging stations to work with its vehicles." says SlashGear: "Tesla's proprietary charging connector is used for vehicles sold in North America and some other markets. With a different standard plug and the lack of a CCS adapter, some owners in North America were unable to use third-party charging networks based on the CCS standard. According to the email sent out to owners in South Korea, the CCS Combo 1 adapter can be used with the Model 3 and Model Y. It won't be usable for owners of the Model S and Model X. The adapter will be made available to owners with preferential purchase tickets on October 19." In this episode, Steve Patton, EY Americas Mobility Sector Leader, and guests from Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research share their insights on Deep Orange, a vehicle prototype program. Ernst & Young LLP has collaborated with Clemson University and its Deep Orange program to advance autonomous vehicle (AV) technology. Deep Orange, currently in its 12th year, is an educational framework within the Department of Automotive Engineering at Clemson University. Every year, as part of the program, students are given new challenges. This year, the challenge is to build an autonomous racecar that could race at 200 miles an hour at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The challenge has been designed to lead the students through a process that an automotive original equipment manufacturer (OEM) or supplier might go through while they're developing a vehicle. It is a unique way to educate students in the systems integration of vehicles. Key takeaways: Ernst & Young LLP has collaborated with Clemson University and its Deep Orange 12 program to advance autonomous vehicle (AV) technology to be used by 30 global teams from 39 universities in the Indy Autonomous Challenge. Through the program, Clemson graduate students are designing the competition base vehicle and have tackled industry challenges such as integrating sensors with computer hardware, analyzing constraints in perception sensors, and addressing safety concerns. Deep Orange helps students develop a systems perspective, giving them the opportunity to work with technologies and overcome challenges that have real-world implications – and as a result, accelerating the future of mobility.
