On this special episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by 16-year old Buffalo Bills superfan Tommy Parzymieso to discuss both his challenges and recent incredible moment, announcing the Bills first-round pick at the NFL Draft last week in Green Bay. The episode is recorded live from Imperial Pizza in South Buffalo.Born and raised in Orchard Park, Tommy at age 2 was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a very rare genetic muscle wasting disorder affecting his muscles and heart as well as his lungs. As a result of his skeletal muscles being weak, he's reliant on an electric wheelchair full time to get around. But that hasn't stopped this young man's unbelievable spirt and love for sports.Through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Tommy was along with his family was given a personalized tour of the Bills facility a couple of weeks before the draft. Tommy knew about that and that he'd be getting the chance to meet Sean McDermott and Brandon Beane. What he didn't know was that Beane was going to surprise him and ask Tommy to travel to Green Bay and announce Buffalo's first pick in front a huge live audience. Tommy documents the entire experience.Tommy also talks about his favorite team, why last year's first pick Keon Coleman is his favorite player, his dream of being a football coach someday, his family and plenty more.Tommy and his family will be hosting a "Team Tommy" fundraising event that takes place this Saturday, May 3rd, being held at the Wings Meeting Place in Orchard Park, not far from Highmark Stadium. Proceeds from the fundraiser will help improve modifications needed inside their home, specialized equipment and other resources that can help Tommy continue his quality of life for years to come.  Please consider supporting the event.Big shout-out and thank you once again to Imperial Pizza for being a gracious host and for their excellent wings. They now have two locations, 1035 Abbott Road and also 1665 Main Street♦♦♦♦♦Follow Patrick Moran/Talking Buffalo Podcast Substack: Patrick Moran's SubstackTwitter: @PatrickMoranTBBlue Sky: @PatrickMoranTB.bsky.socialInstagram: @PatrickMoranTBFacebook: Talking Buffalo Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 30, 2025 51:45

Bill and Steve look into the Dawn Chrous, that early morning explosion of bird song that refuses to let you sleep in. And, for all you Daniel-haters out there, this episode is 100% Daniel-free (but Bill and Steve are both crying on the inside. We miss Daniel buckets, and we're betting you do, too). This episode was recorded on April 10, 2025 at the California Road Rereation Area in Orchard Park, NY.Episode Notes and LinksAre there orioles in China? Bill shared the classic Chinese poem from the Tang Dynasty (~600–900 CE) - the one called "Feelings on Awakening from Drunkenness on a Spring Day" by Li Bai, and Steve wondered: Are there Orioles in China. Turns out that, yes, there are, and they're more oriole-y (?) than ours! That's because our New World orioles, like the one we're betting you're thinking of right now (the well-known orange and black Baltimore Oriole) belong to the family Icteridae and are not closely related to Old World orioles. Instead, they're closely related to blackbirds and meadowlarks, fellow family members in the Icteridae. Old world orioles in Europe and Asia, on the other hand, belong to the family Oriolidae. Our orioles were named after them because of the similarities to the old world orioles in behavior, diet, and appearance, but, despite the similarities – these families are not closely related. The similarities evolved independently due to convergent evolution (when species develop similar traits in response to similar environmental pressures). So, yes, Steve, there are orioles in China, but it's tough to say for sure which oriole Li Bai heard in his drunken stupor because Birds of China reports seven species found throughout the country, and, as we pointed out, given Li Bai's state, maybe the bird was only in his head. Is there a Thorpe's Law? When Bill mentioned William Thorpe, a British biologist and ornithologist, Steve thought he recalled there was an ecological law or concept credited to Thorpe. Bill scoured the Internet, but the closest thing he could find was Taylor's power law, an empirical law in ecology that relates the variance of the number of individuals of a species per unit area of habitat to the corresponding mean by a power law relationship. If that made sense to you, Bill asks if you could kindly explain it to him. bird Can someone look at a sound spectrograph and identify the bird? The guys wondered if a sound researcher looking at sound spectrographs (visual representations of bird song) could get good enough to know what bird they're looking at just by the visual? An internet search was inconclusive- a lot of sites talk about using the spectrographs as an aid to get better at understanding and ID'ing bird song, but we couldn't find any that specifically addressed this question. We've emailed some bird biologists and we'll update these notes when we hear back!Social Monogamy vs. Sexual Monogamy: Steve talked about how he'd heard that even in species that bond for life, members of the pair will still seek out other mates. True? First, let's make a distinction that Steve alluded to in the episode: that is, social vs. sexual monogamy. In birds, "monogamy" often refers to a social bond, where a pair stays together and raises offspring together. However, this doesn't necessarily mean they are sexually faithful to each other. So, socially monogamous doesn't equal sexual monogamy. Looking in to this, we landed on a passage in The Sibley Guide to Bird Life and Behavior – a birder's bible if there is one – it reports: “90 percent of all bird species are socially monogamous, but some level of cheating is common. Cheating, or “extra-pair copulation” also occurs, but rarely, among birds of sexually monogamous, mated-for-life species, “but is not yet known how many species engage in extra-pair copulations, since many species remain to be studied. However, it appears that genetic monogamy may be the exception rather than the rule among birds.” Sponsors and Ways to Support UsGumleaf Boots, USA (free shipping for patrons)Thank you to Always Wandering Art (Website and Etsy Shop) for providing the artwork for many of our episodes.Support us on Patreon.Check out the Field Guides merch at our Teespring store. What Bills Extensions Were Actually "Hometown Discounts"

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, it's another edition of "The Podbag" as Patrick Moran is responding to questions and takes from listeners on several topics, including a discussion on which of the four big Buffalo Bills extensions can be considered "hometown discounts" after evaluating everything.Khalil Shakir, Terrel Bernard, Greg Rousseau and Christian Benford all signed four-year extensions with the Bills this offseason, a remarkable job by Brandon Beane and his staff anyway you slice it, and that doesn't even count the new Josh Allen contract. Many have called some or even all the deals extremely team friendly and even hometown discounts from the players. Patrick explains that why acknowledging every deal was one he is excited about, he stops short of calling them anything better than fair market deals in three of the four cases. Which is the one true deal Patrick feels falls well below what the player could've gotten a year from now in the open market? Also the never-ending James Cook drama took another twist this week when his house in Orchard Park was listed for sale. It has many fans angry and ready to turn the page on him right now. Patrick explains why he continues to dig his feet into the ground and insists you find a way to get another year of fully motivated James Cook before preparing to lose him in 2026.This week's Podbag also features a handful of draft questions and comments, including reaction to yesterday's first Bills mock draft that featured David Tilton from Cover 1.That plus a handful of Sabres take that show fans, and certainly not Patrick is the least bit sold on their hot streak of late and plenty more.Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red's at 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium. We consider them THE most underrated spot for wings, pizza and other great food in Western New York plus it's a great place to drink and have a great time.♦♦♦♦♦Follow Patrick Moran/Talking Buffalo Podcast Substack: Patrick Moran's SubstackTwitter: @PatrickMoranTBBlue Sky: @PatrickMoranTB.bsky.socialInstagram: @PatrickMoranTBFacebook: Talking Buffalo Podcast

Hour 1 Boomer hopes that the Jets let Aaron Glenn hire his own staff. Based on some of the names out there, Boomer's not so sure that's happening. Keyshawn Johnson, who was a teammate of Glenn while on the Jets, said there is no way he's bringing Aaron Rodgers back. Jerry is here for his first update of the day, and starts with Liam Coen doing an about face and will become the head coach in Jacksonville. Washington's defensive coordinator talked about treating Jalen Hurts like a RB and hitting him that way. The KC defense talked about the threat of Josh Allen. Amari Cooper was asked if he's satisfied with the amount of catches he's been getting. Jerry went around the NBA last night. The Rangers beat the Flyers so Boomer is happy. In the final segment of the hour, Pete Alonso is supposedly deep into talks with the Toronto Bluejays. He's a fan favorite, but perhaps he's not a favorite in the locker room. Who knows? Hour 2 The National Championship game between Notre Dame and Ohio State didn't have as many viewers as expected. That could be because while it was happening, Trump was doing a press conference where he was taking questions. It also wasn't a very close game most of the way. Boomer thinks Jalen Hurts is hanging onto the ball too long, the same way Sam Darnold did his last 2 games. Hurts does not look like the QB who had a great performance in the Super Bowl a few years ago. Jerry returns for an update, but first Gio said if Saquon Barkley wins a Super Bowl, this will officially be the worst season in the Giants 100 year history. Brian Schottenheimer will likely be the next Cowboys coach and maybe Rex Ryan will be the defensive coordinator. Andy Reid is looking forward to the challenge of playing Buffalo. Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward did their best Boomer & Phil Simms impression as they talked to each other about each other. Joe Benigno wants Pete Alonso back and he blames Stearns and Cohen. He also said, ‘screw Vlad Guerrero, I want my guy'. We heard audio of Ohtani's interpreter calling a bank pretending to be Ohtani looking for a $200,000 withdrawal. In the final segment of the hour, Boomer heard a sports argument in the hallways in the 5am hour. Gio is ashamed to say, he was part of the argument, which he hates. He was arguing with C-Mac about his takes on the Commanders/Lions game. Hour 3 It looks like Rob Saleh is going back to San Francisco. Gio wonders if Aaron Glenn should call Saleh for advice on coaching for the Jets. Boomer said he should not. The Saints, Raiders and Cowboys still need head coaches. Is Pete Carroll getting one of these jobs? A woman who lives in Orchard Park calls in to give a Buffalo Bills report. She has 4 feet of snow in her driveway. Gio is not impressed with Sean McDermott. In the final segment of the hour, Gio saw a car on fire on the L.I.E on his way in. Gio wonders how a car catches fire on a highway. Our makeup artist, Aly, took a pic of it on the way in and Gio wondered why she did that. Hour 4 Gio has stopped believing ‘this is the year', as he's been burned by that many times. People are saying that now about the Bills. They said it about the Lions before last week. Boomer is very impressed with Jayden Daniels rookie season in getting them to the Championship game. We broke down both Championship games and turnovers and all that stuff. Boomer w ...

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Matt Warren of SB Nation to discuss several topics, including pouring over some of the reasons the Buffalo Bills should feel confident heading to Kansas City for their AFC championship game against the Chiefs on Sunday evening. The Bills are headed to the conference title game for the first time since 2020, when they went to Arrowhead and lost to the Chiefs, 38-20. A lot has obviously changed since then, or has it? The guys have a discussion about how Kansas City has remained the creme of the crop in the AFC (and NFL) and even when they win close and/or ugly games, what matters most if they always win. Plus, it seems over the past few years that guys like Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Chris Jones and others always ramp up their games in their postseason. That said, Buffalo has plenty of things to be confident about. The guys talk about how for starters, they beat them earlier the season in Orchard Park. The guys also discuss the Bills ability to score on anyone, including two dominant defenses already in the playoffs as well as they're familiarity with the Chiefs, Josh Allen not turning the ball over and an overall vibe about this year's Bills team we've been talking about all season. That plus discussing a few X-factors, lingering Baltimore Ravens thoughts and plenty more. Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red's at 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium. The Bills held Derrick Henry to only 84 rushing yards in what was a spirited effort from Bobby Babich's unit. Josh Allen led the Bills offense with two rushing touchdowns and no turnovers. Alex Brasky Talks Bills vs Ravens & Legacy Game For Sean McDermott

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Batavia Daily News sports editor Alex Brasky to go over several critical points one more time before the Buffalo Bills take on the Baltimore Ravens in elimination playoff football Sunday, including examining how much of a legacy game this is for Bills head coach Sean McDermott. Alex has been at One Bills Drive all week as the Bills prepare for Baltimore on Sunday and Patrick asks him to describe what the vibe's been like there, as Buffalo is in the unusual spot of being a home underdog despite not having a loss all season in Orchard Park. How much does that Week four game when Baltimore pounded Buffalo play a part on the betting line so many months later? It's certainly for health and injury reasons. The guys talk about how much heathier Buffalo is coming into this game compared to earlier this season against Baltimore and last year at this time in their three point AFC divisional playoff heartbreaking loss to Kansas City. Also, Alex has thoughts on how much of a legacy game this is for McDermott. The Bills head coach has a 6-6 playoff record but has often got stuck at this point of the postseason. He's often compared by Bills fans to Marty Schottenheimer, an unfair comparison and it's discussed how best-case we may be seeing with Sean what happened with Bill Cowher and Tony Dungy years ago. Regardless, the guys talk about how important a win would be to his legacy and how much another loss in this round may tarnish it. That plus the significance of Ed Oliver and DaQuan Jones playing great for Buffalo on Sunday, who much the weather and home field should matter, a couple of Bills X-factors and plenty more. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran brings a full playoff preview of the Buffalo Bills hosting the Baltimore Ravens in the divisional round Sunday in Orchard Park, including keys to a Bills victory, bold predictions for the game and a stab at picking the final score. With the seasons Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson have had, it almost felt like fate that the two would meet in the postseason. Unfortunately the quarterback that loses is probably going to have some narratives unfairly raised about them, as Patrick explains. Hopefully for the Bills the rematch goes better than the first meeting back in Week four when the Ravens pounded Buffalo in prime time, 35-10. Patrick offers plenty of perspective looking back at the game, from the Bills injuries to as assortment of other things that went wrong. From there it's some talk about both teams before settling into Buffalo's biggest keys to victory, which unquestionably revolve around the Bills defensive tackle tandem of Ed Oliver and DaQuan Jones. Plus, can the Bills win this game if Allen doesn't have the better day than Jackson? Bold predictions include a big day for a pair of Buffalo boundary receivers, a defensive star player performing like one and possibly the most juiciest bold prediction we've had on the show the entire year. That plus a gutsy final score prediction and much more. Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red's at 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium. Several Reasons To Like Buffalo Over Ravens In Playoff Rematch

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Matt Warren of SB Nation to discuss among other things several reasons to like the Buffalo Bills in a playoff rematch over the Baltimore Ravens this coming Sunday, despite a growing sentiment that the Bills are actually the underdogs going in. On Sunday night's opening betting line the Bills were a 1.5 favorite but less than 24 hours later the Ravens were favored in Vegas by the same margin. There's plenty of reasons for gamblers, fans and media like to give the edge to Baltimore----they're red hot, have six All-Pros on their roster including the now MVP betting favorite in Lamar Jackson, a stud running back and a defense that's been the best in the NFL over the second half of the season. Oh, there's also the matter that Baltimore crushed Buffalo at home all the way back in Week four of the regular season, 35-10. Still, there's also plenty of reasons to like Buffalo's chances in this rematch and the guys spend a big chunk of the show talking about them. Among them is a lot of key players back for Buffalo that didn't play the Ravens earlier this season, Josh Allen taking his game to another level, literally in the playoffs, the potential to sustain drives and keep Baltimore off the field, and a potentially impactful injury to the Ravens if 1,000-yard wide receiver Zay Flowers (knee) can't make it back. There's other factors discussed too, including the Bills being experts at harnessing at what they deem disrespect into motivation, Jackson having a spotty playoff history and perhaps most importantly, the game being in Orchard Park instead of Baltimore this time around. Plus, are the Ravens players quietly as cocky about this game as most their fans? That, other things to like about Sunday, thoughts on the Kansas City/Houston game and much more. In Hour Three, Roger Goodell and the NFL most likely are pushing for the Bengals to somehow make it into the playoffs, but down here in Miami we could care less what the league wants. Could the Dolphins possibly be heading into Orchard Park to face the Bills in the playoffs once again without their starting QB? The Dolphins can't worry about what goes on with the Chiefs and Broncos game, just win vs the Jets and hope for the best.

There was a lot of action across the NFL in week 11. And games ending on blocked field goals in back to back weeks was just the tip of the iceberg.  Because even as the Chicago Bears failed to end their now 11 game losing streak against the Green Bay Packers at Soldier Field, we also saw Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown, David Montgomery, Jahmyr Gibbs and the rest of the Detroit Lions put up a league high 52 points on a hapless Jacksonville Jaguars team missing Trevor Lawrence. In one of Sunday's marquee matchups between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens, The Steel Curtain burst out of the past, stifling MVP front runner Lamar Jackson. While in Orchard Park, Josh Allen put on his Superman cape and handed Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Andy Reid and the rest of the Kansas City Chiefs their first loss of the season. So Mercury Morris and all of the 1972 Miami Dolphins can pop some champagne and relax as they remain the lone undefeated team in NFL history. Ben Solak takes us through what stood out to him in week 11. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
