Paren data shows Ionna averages $0.37/kWh, the cheapest of 17 networks and about 40% below Tesla and Electrify America's $0.56, though home charging still dominates at more than 90% of sessions and $0.18/kWh.ZEEKR TO LAUNCH 8X AND 9X IN AUSTRALIAZeekr will add the 9X and 8X luxury plug-in hybrid SUVs to its all-electric Australian range from late 2026 into 2027, after passing 10,000 local sales in under two years. The three-row 8X targets the BMW X5 and Range Rover Sport below A$100,000 with 900-volt charging, while the 9X moves upmarket at around A$150,000 with six-seat luxury and Naim audio; both are heavy, road-focused monocoque vehicles rather than off-roaders.LI SHUFU LEAVES GEELY AUTO CHAIRLi Shufu has resigned as chairman of Geely Automobile after 40 years, with An Conghui succeeding him on 18 August 2026 and Li becoming honorary chairman for life while remaining controlling shareholder and chairman of Zhejiang Geely Holding. Gan Jiayue becomes CEO as the group shifts from family-centred management toward professional systems, targeting two-thirds of sales outside China and 5% market share by 2030 across Europe, the Americas and Southeast Asia.LEIPZIG PREPARES FOR NEUE KLASSEBMW halted Leipzig production for a five-and-a-half-week summer shutdown in which over 2,000 contractors replaced 240 hydraulic lifting tables, installed 160 body-shop robots and swapped roughly 1,500 tonnes of steel to handle Neue Klasse underbodies integrating the battery and powertrain. BMW spent a low three-digit million sum on top of nearly €2 billion over five years, though it has not named which models Leipzig will build, as new i3 production began in Munich this month.SPARKCHARGE EXPANDS UK ENERGY NETWORKSparkCharge is bringing its US distributed energy model to the UK, serving autonomous fleets, construction and industrial sites that cannot wait for adequate grid connections. Founded by CEO Joshua Aviv and already operating across North America, the company will combine AI-optimised software, battery storage and on-site generation under new UK managing director James Taylor.FEDERAL PACKAGE TARGETS HEAVY EV BARRIERSAustralia has committed $400 million to heavy-vehicle reforms targeting charging barriers, automated permits, curfews and weight limits, announced by Treasurer Jim Chalmers after a Productivity Commission report found road-freight productivity had stalled for over a decade. The Commission estimated wider access for high-productivity and zero-emission trucks could add up to $4 billion to GDP annually, with electric trucks currently under 1% of Australian heavy-vehicle sales.ŠKODA ADDS V2L AND CAMP MODEŠkoda has added Vehicle-to-Load bidirectional charging, which powers external devices via a 230V boot socket, and an app-activated Camp Mode that maintains overnight cabin temperature with at least 30% charge. The new Peaq will also offer a Relax Package with AGR-certified massaging seats, electric leg rests and Sonos audio, plus a Wellbeing app, ventilated Phone Box and up to four 45W USB-C ports.BEACHMAN TARGETS OLD BIKES FOR ELECTRIC CONVERSIONBeachman Bikes is seeking broken motorcycles for electric conversion, building on founders Ben Taylor and Steve Payne's first prototype, a modified 1979 Kawasaki KZ200 completed in 2020, and a production run of 30 bikes on a 1970s 125cc platform. Having sold the 45 mph '64 as a Class II e-bike, the company is moving to pedal-free low-speed motorcycles in Canada and plans to end US e-bike sales next year to become a moped and motorcycle manufacturer.BRISBANE RIVER E-SCOOTERS STAY UNDERWATERAugust low tides exposed dozens of dumped Lime, Neuron and Beam e-scooters in the Brisbane River, including 24 near the CBD, with Ocean Crusaders having collected around 150 in the past year and storing the waterlogged batteries privately. Water experts warned that lithium, copper, nickel, cobalt and manganese could accumulate in sediment and harm macroinvertebrates, while the council caps operators at 7,100 devices and reportedly earned just over AUD$5m last financial year.

Scrapping the old car rather than selling it cut lifecycle emissions by up to 44%, because selling it simply passes the petrol burning to someone else, though coal-heavy grids weaken the case and the study measured carbon rather than cost.EV VOLUMES FORECASTS 23.3M PLUG-IN SALES IN 2026, UP 7.8%EV Volumes expects global light-vehicle sales to fall in 2026 on economic and geopolitical pressures while plug-in sales rise 7.8% to about 23.3 million, taking share to 25.7% as BEVs climb 17.2% to an 18.5% share and PHEVs drop 10.6% to 7.2%. America is the drag, with US EV sales down 32.9% to 415,968 and a further 15% contraction forecast for 2026, while Western and Central Europe supplies the growth at 1.9 million sales, up 29.7%.JAGUAR REVEALS TYPE 01 INTERIOR BEFORE 6 OCTOBER NEW YORK UNVEILINGJaguar has shown the uncamouflaged cabin of the Type 01, the four-seat GT leading its reinvention as an all-electric luxury marque, with a central spine splitting the interior into four single-seat compartments, a sparse dashboard carrying only a driver display and small touchscreen, and finishes in travertine stone and artisan textiles. Like the Polestar 4 it has no rear window or mirror, relying on a camera feed, and the car appears at Monterey Car Week this weekend in fresh camouflage before its New York unveiling on 6 October.VW TO SHOW ELECTRIC ID. CALIFORNIA CRUISE AT CARAVAN SALONVolkswagen Commercial Vehicles will give the ID. Buzz-based ID. California Cruise its world premiere at Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf from 28 August to 6 September, calling it the first fully electric California and the foundation of a family of electric campervans. Alongside it is a concept for the California Beach featuring an inflatable kitchen under 10kg developed with Stuff Bubble and a convertible bed module of roughly 200 x 134cm, removable kit that lets buyers trade equipment weight against range.WAYMO HAS 684 FINISHED OJAI ROBOTAXIS WAITING AT MESAA tracker counting Waymo's Mesa, Arizona site found 953 Ojai robotaxis, of which 684 are finished and idle without passengers, up from around 500 in early June, alongside 12 completed Hyundai IONIQ 5 robotaxis. The Zeekr-built, Magna-converted Ojai carries the sixth-generation Waymo Driver with 13 cameras and four lidars for under $20,000 per vehicle, and is intended to replace the ageing Jaguar I-Pace fleet across San Francisco, Los Angeles and Phoenix.YASA WINS DRIVE35 GRANT FOR RARE-EARTH-FREE AXIAL FLUX MOTORSOxford axial flux motor maker YASA has won UK government funding through the DRIVE35 Demonstrate competition for Project Resilience, which pursues two rotor pathways built on its existing stator, one using magnets free of heavy rare earths and one removing rare earths entirely. The work addresses a concentrated and politically exposed supply chain, but risks heat performance, and runs across the Mercedes-Benz subsidiary's Oxford, Bicester and Welshpool sites, which employ more than 300 people.AION UT HATCHBACK REACHES UK IN SEPTEMBER BELOW £30,000AION opens UK order books in September for the UT, a sub-4.3-metre electric hatchback with a 201hp front motor, 7.3-second 0-62mph time, a claimed 268 miles WLTP and a 30-80% charge in 24 minutes, priced below £30,000 though no exact figure has been given. Designed at GAC's Milan studio and following the V SUV as AION's second UK model, it takes on the CUPRA Raval, Volkswagen ID. Polo and Renault 5 with no dealer network or badge recognition to lean on.ANALYST THINKS AMERICANS WILL FORCE USA TO ADMIT CHINESE EVSWith Canada set to permit up to 49,000 Chinese-made EVs a year and Mexico already selling them, Automotive Foresight's Yale Zhang argues American buyers who can see cheaper cars a few hours away will pressure politicians to open the market despite the 100% tariff and connected-car security rules. Local assembly, joint ventures and technology sold under other badges could bypass import tariffs anyway, and Ford's Jim Farley has warned staff Chinese rivals could arrive within five to 10 years while Ford works towards a $25,000 EV.TATA TECHNOLOGIES DEVELOPING MULTI-POWERTRAIN PLATFORM FOR HONDA, BLOOMBERG REPORTSBloomberg reports that Tata Technologies is developing a platform supporting petrol, hybrid and electric powertrains across multiple vehicles for Honda, though neither company has confirmed the customer. Chief executive Warren Harris has referred only to a full vehicle programme won from an unnamed Japanese OEM in April, and India looks the likely market given Honda's pledge of ten models there by 2030 and Toshihiro Mibe's comments about using external development resources from 2028.WHITBY MORRISON DELIVERS ELECTRIC ICE-CREAM VAN TO HOCKING'S OF DEVONBritish converter Whitby Morrison has delivered what it calls the world's first fully certified electric ice-cream van to Hocking's of North Devon, built on a Mercedes-Benz eSprinter Chassis Cab with up to 274 miles of range, 10-80% charging in 34 minutes and a 4.25-tonne weight that keeps it within a Category B licence. Designed as an EV from the outset, it uses the company's ePower system to run the freezing equipment from the vehicle rather than a kerbside auxiliary engine, removing the noise from a trade that has traditionally announced itself by sound.

The Neue Klasse flagship uses sixth-generation eDrive tech and a 108.7 kWh battery, charges at up to 400 kW to add 373 km (231 miles) in ten minutes, and starts at €73,925 ($85,200) in Germany for the iX3 50 xDrive with up to 805 km (500 miles) of WLTP range.BMW TO BUILD IX5 BATTERY PACKS IN SOUTH CAROLINABMW will begin mass production of iX5 high-voltage battery packs in December at its new Plant Woodruff in South Carolina, near Plant Spartanburg where the iX5 is assembled, keeping pack assembly in-house to build a local supply chain, cut geopolitical risk and reduce logistics costs. AESC, now majority-owned by China's Envision Group, supplies the 120 mm cylindrical cells — which deliver 30% more usable energy than the iX3's 95 mm cells — giving the US iX5 a 144 kWh pack (141 kWh in Europe), an estimated 435 miles of range, 460 kW peak charging and a 10-80% charge in 22 minutes.ZEEKR 9X ARRIVES IN EUROPEZeekr has launched the 9X Ultra 6-Seater in Europe as a luxury SUV and its first Super Hybrid, pairing a 900V dual-motor system with a 2.0-litre turbo engine used purely as a generator for 897 horsepower, 0-100 km/h in 4.1 seconds, up to 737 km of range and a 10-80% DC charge in 9.5 minutes. Designed in Gothenburg with adaptive air suspension and CDC dampers, it offers reclining, massaging first and second rows, an onboard refrigerator, a ceiling-mounted 17-inch 3K OLED screen and a 32-speaker Naim system, and marks Zeekr's fifth European model in three years across 16 markets.SK ON AND FACTORIAL TARGET SOLID-STATE SCALESK On and Factorial Energy have partnered to push solid-state batteries towards production, combining Factorial's FEST cell technology with SK On's manufacturing network to tackle the scaling problem that has held back a chemistry promising higher energy density, longer range and faster charging than lithium-ion. Factorial is already testing cells in North America and has integrated them into Stellantis' Dodge Charger Daytona prototype, claiming 375 Wh/kg energy density, while its work with Mercedes-Benz produced a modified EQS that covered over 745 miles on a single charge.TESLA SHIP LOAD SETS SHANGHAI RECORDThe Chinese-built car carrier Glovis Nova loaded 7,738 electric vehicles — all Tesla Model 3 and Model Y cars — at Shanghai's South Port Terminal on Sunday, a domestic record for a single voyage, and set sail for Zeebrugge, Belgium, for distribution across Europe. The 10,800-car vessel and its sister ship Glovis Leader, which berthed the same day before heading to Busan, were built by Guangzhou Shipyard International, a China State Shipbuilding Corporation subsidiary, and rank among the largest of their kind in the world.NORWAY LEADS GLOBAL EV ADOPTION INDEXNorway tops the latest Global EV Adoption Index with 73.2 out of 100, ahead of Denmark on 64.7 and China on 64.5, backed by a 92% EV sales share in 2024, 32 public chargers per 1,000 battery vehicles and 41.9% fast-charger coverage. Denmark climbed 40 percentage points since 2020 to a 56% sales share with 73 chargers per 1,000 EVs, China recorded a 48% share and 103 chargers per 1,000 vehicles, and Tesla led brand interest across 75 countries with 71.6 million Google queries in the past year.MITSUBISHI RETURNS TO NORTH AMERICA WITH LEAF EVMitsubishi will re-enter the North American EV market with the 2027 Eclipse Sportback EV, on sale in the US and Canada by late summer or early fall of 2026 through around 300 dealerships. Billed as all-new, it is in fact based on the next-generation Nissan Leaf via the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, sharing its 75 kWh liquid-cooled battery, native NACS port, Supercharger access and 150 kW charging (10-80% in about 35 minutes) beneath new fascias, lighting and alloys, with range and pricing still undisclosed.LEPAS L8 TARGETS EUROPE ON VALUEChery has launched the Lepas L8, a D-segment family SUV priced from £34,900 to £37,900, using the upmarket Lepas brand to challenge BMW and Volkswagen on space, equipment and price alongside stablemates such as the Jaecoo 7, Omoda 7 and Chery Tiggo 8. Power comes from Chery's Super Hybrid system combining a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor and 18.4 kWh battery, while the cabin offers an upmarket feel, generous tech, vast rear legroom and headroom despite the panoramic roof, and a 507-litre boot comparable to a Nissan Qashqai's.KERBSIDE CHARGING SEARCHES JUMP AS EV COST SCRUTINY GROWSVertu reports that searches for "kerbside EV charging" rose 125% over the past three months while searches for "cheapest EV tariff" climbed 173%, suggesting buyers are weighing access and running costs together before switching. The trend matters because government figures published in 2024 found 40% of UK households have no access to off-street parking, leaving a large share of the market dependent on public charging and highly sensitive to the cost of every kilowatt-hour.PRINCE AL WALEED RAISES LUCID STAKEPrince Al Waleed bin Talal's investment office bought just over 19 million Lucid shares, lifting his stake to about 5% according to an SEC filing, with the prince saying he bought when Lucid's market cap was below $2 billion following speculation — since denied by Lucid — about bankruptcy or a take-private deal. The purchase, which Lucid welcomed as an independent vote of confidence, comes as the company restructures under new CEO Silvio Napoli after cutting 18% of staff in June on top of an earlier 12% lay-off, and adds to Saudi ownership alongside the Public Investment Fund's roughly 60% stake held since the 2021 SPAC merger.

This week on Autonomy Markets, Grayson Brulte and Walter Piecyk discuss WeRide trying to catch up to Waymo globally, Waymo preparing to deploy Chinese-made robotaxis in Texas and the CEO of FedEx Freight's open embracement of autonomous trucking. As WeRide and Uber continue to expand throughout Europe and the Middle East together, Waymo continues to work towards deploying the Chinese-made Zeekr robotaxis now called the Ojai, with data suggesting they are now in Texas, in a politically risky move.FedEx Freight CEO John Smith declared autonomous trucks ready for prime time, a signal Grayson reads alongside Amazon entering the freight business and Uber selling down another stake in Aurora. With Amazon running one of the most sophisticated freight networks in the world and FedEx now a standalone public company, the pressure on Uber Freight is building.Wrapping up the conversation, Grayson and Walt Uber's continued European push by partnering with Autobrains on a Munich robotaxi service pending regulatory approval, and Saudi Arabia's PIF-backed Humain partnered with NVIDIA to deploy robotaxis in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.Episode Chapters00:00 SpaceX IPO3:53 WeRide and Uber Expand Across Europe7:39 Waymo Registers 45 Zeekrs in Texas10:30 Waymo's New Tampa Depot15:36 Uber Sells Down Its Aurora Stake16:33 Why Amazon Hasn't Bought an Autonomous Trucking Company?23:04 Avride Robotaxis in Texas25:26 Serve Robotics Moves Into Laundry26:29 Ferrari Rules Out Autonomy28:56 Foreign Autonomy Desk30:27 Next Week--------About The Road to AutonomyThe Road to Autonomy is the leading applied intelligence platform covering the convergence of automation, autonomy, and the Autonomy Economy.™.Through our podcasts, newsletter, and proprietary applied intelligence, we set the narrative for institutional investors, industry executives, and policymakers navigating the convergence of automation, autonomy, and economic growth.Join institutional investors and industry leaders who read This Week in The Autonomy Economy every Sunday. Quick correction upfront — yesterday's story aboutWilliam Li preparing an 8th IPO came from a Chinesearticle headline I could not fully verify. I'm pullingit back until confirmed. Credibility first always. The ES9 launched May 27th and already has a 17-weekdelivery queue. NIO stock surged 6.79% on June 1st andis trading at $6.18. The demand is real. But a seriousquestion is being asked — the ES8 sold 110,000 unitsin 8 months. Can the ES9 replicate that in a marketwhere product half-lives keep shrinking? The honest bull case: the ES9 at 498,000 yuan targetsa different buyer than the ES8 at 406,800 yuan. If NIOopened a new segment rather than cannibalizing anexisting one, the ES9 has its own ceiling to find. The honest bear case: the 17-week queue reflectsinitial pent-up pre-order demand. This week on Autonomy Markets, Grayson Brulte and Walter Piecyk discuss Waymo's widening lead, the Ojai (Chinese-made Zeekr robotaxi) rollout's political fault lines, and the new Texas autonomous vehicle and truck database.Waymo is actively preparing to deploy a fleet of Chinese-made Zeekrs across California and Arizona, now renamed Ojai, in blue and purple states, not a red state, at least not yet. Sticking to his original call that the Zeekr is an unforced error, Grayson lays out the emerging split where Jaguars head to red states and Zeekrs head to blue and purple ones. With Magna now producing roughly 250 vehicles a month, Waymo is on pace for 6,000 cars by year-end, and Walt argues the real unlock comes when the sensor stack gets cheaper and Waymo begins to add more than 1,000 new vehicles a month on the road.In Texas, the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles launched the Automated Motor Vehicle Lookup, where any member of the public can look up the fleet size of any AV operator in the state along with any complaints that might be filed.Wrapping up the conversation, Grayson and Walt discussed the launch of Wayve Labs, Zoox getting an undeserved pass thanks to Amazon and BYD's willingness to compensate owners when God's Eye is engaged during an incident.Episode Chapters00:00 Waymo Deploys the Ojai06:40 Waymo Production Math08:55 Waymo's Expanding Lead15:15 Texas Automated Motor Vehicle Lookup25:00 Wayve Labs32:10 3,760 Miles Across Canada. Shoot us a Text.Episode #1336: Chinese automakers quietly prep a Canadian invasion, dealers ramp up ad spend amid tariff uncertainty, and even the Cozy Coupe gets an EV twistShow Notes with links:Chinese automakers are laying the groundwork to enter Canada, with hiring, vehicle sightings, and dealer conversations signaling real momentum. With a new 49K EV import quota opening this year, brands like BYD, Geely, and Chery are positioning early for market entry.Geely's Zeekr brand is already hiring senior leadership in Toronto, signaling active plans for sales, service, and dealer network development.Chery is testing vehicles in Toronto and courting Canadian dealers, even flying some to the Beijing Auto Show to build early relationships.BYD is moving fastest on retail, aiming to open as many as 20 stores this year through local partnerships.Despite the activity, no official quota allocations have been issued yet, and sales likely won't begin until late this year.Rising tariffs and shifting inventory levels are putting dealer marketing back in the spotlight. As uncertainty creeps into pricing and supply, dealers are leaning harder into advertising to guide consumers.Dealers spent $9.22B on advertising last year, up 4% and nearing pre-pandemic levels as the market stabilizes.Digital dominates, capturing 73% of ad budgets, with third-party listings, search, and social leading the chargeDealers spent an average of $705 per new vehicle sold on advertising, still well above pre-pandemic levels despite a slight year-over-year dip.Third-party listing sites alone captured over 20% of total ad spend, making them the single largest channel in dealer marketing budgets.“The future of the U.S. auto industry is murky… effects are difficult to quantify,” said NADA Chief Economist Patrick Manzi.Even the toy aisle isn't immune to the EV transition. Little Tikes is giving its iconic Cozy Coupe a plug-in twist, introducing a playful charging station that mirrors the real-world shift from gas pumps to electrons.Little Tikes launched a $33 “Cozy E-Charging Station” accessory for its classic Cozy Coupe, aimed at kids ages 18 months to 5 years. The plug fits right into the existing fuel door, signaling how seamlessly EVs are replacing gas—even in pretend play. The Cozy Coupe itself still runs Flintstones-style, powered by kids' feet—not batteries. The toy has sold up to 500,000 units annually at its peak, making it one of the most recognizable “vehicles” in America. At $65 for the car, it may be the cheapest “EV” on the market, even if range is limited to the living room.Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/
Episode #250 of China EVs & More dives into a turning point moment for the global auto industry as China's EV market enters a new phase ahead of the Beijing Auto Show.Tu Le and Lei Xing break down an explosion of flagship SUV launches across Chinese brands — from NIO, XPeng, Zeekr, and LeapMotor — all competing in the same $40K–$60K range with similar tech, features, and performance. The result? A hyper-competitive market where price has become the ultimate differentiator. But that's just one side of the story. The episode also explores:Why Chinese EVs are converging on identical feature sets (800V, ADAS, AI chassis)How foreign automakers (VW, Nissan, Audi) are attempting a comeback in ChinaWhy marketing costs and partnerships may determine survival for legacy OEMsAnd how China's EV ecosystem is shifting from price wars → brand differentiationThis is not just about China anymore — it's about who wins the global auto reset.

Renault is exploring range-extender EV (EREV) technology for its next-generation electric platform — underpinning models like the Scenic successor — where a combustion engine acts only as a generator for trips up to 1,000km, and Provost is pushing for EREVs to be explicitly permitted for sale in the EU and UK beyond the 2035 all-BEV mandate.NORWAY'S EV SHARE RECOVERS AND HITS 98%Norway registered 7,272 new passenger cars in February 2026, with BEVs accounting for 7,127 of them — a 98.01% market share — as the market began to stabilise after a turbulent end to 2025 driven by expiring VAT exemptions. OFV Director Geir Inge Stokke compared the post-surge normalisation to the period following the 2022 VAT reform, with diesel, petrol PHEVs, hybrids, and pure petrol cars dividing up the remaining 2% between them. NORWAY PASSES ONE MILLION BATTERY-ELECTRIC VEHICLESNorway's battery-electric passenger car fleet has crossed one million, with 951,300 BEV passenger cars and 50,300 BEV light commercial vehicles (LCVs) on the road, representing 32.4% of all passenger cars in the country's 2.94 million-strong fleet. Oslo leads with a 48.9% BEV share in its passenger car fleet and is expected to crack 50% before summer, while rural Finnmark trails at 12.2%, and the Norwegian EV Association's Christina Bu says the LCV transition — currently at just 9.7% — urgently needs to accelerate.UPTAKE SPREADS BEYOND WEALTHIER EARLY ADOPTERSResearch from charging firm char.gy and think tank New Automotive shows that EV adoption in England, once closely tied to wealth as measured by the Index of Multiple Deprivation, has spread significantly into poorer areas by Q3 2024–2025, with growth rates converging across most neighbourhoods. Used BEV transactions surged 45.7% in 2025 to a record 274,815 units, lifting used BEV market share to 3.5%, and with more than two million plug-in vehicles now on UK roads, the main remaining challenge is delivering reliable, affordable on-street charging in the most disadvantaged communities. QUANTUMSCAPE UNVEILS PRODUCTION LINE IN CALIFORNIAQuantumScape officially inaugurated its Eagle Line — a highly automated solid-state battery pilot production facility in San Jose, California — on February 4, 2026, designed not for mass production by QuantumScape itself but as a scalable blueprint that licensing partners, including Volkswagen (which has invested over $300 million), can replicate at gigawatt-hour scale in their own plants. With roughly $850 million in liquidity but a history of burning over $100 million annually and Volkswagen having scaled back its involvement in 2023 after missed timelines, QuantumScape's strategy pivot toward licensing means the next 18–24 months are critical for securing a major customer agreement.KIA UK SETS EV2 FIRST DRIVE WEEKENDSKia UK will run First Drive Weekend events for the EV2 across nearly all 190 UK dealers from April 16 to June 27, 2026, offering structured 30-minute accompanied drives ahead of first deliveries expected later in the year. The EV2 is a compact SUV just over four metres long built on the 400V E-GMP platform, supporting 10%–80% DC rapid charging in around 30 minutes, with two battery options (42.2kWh and 61.0kWh) and an expected starting price of around £25,000 — potentially undercutting rivals like the Renault 5 and Ford Puma Gen-E after the UK's £3,750 plug-in vehicle grant.BMW TEASES FOUR-MOTOR ELECTRIC M3 AT NÜRBURGRINGBMW M has released camouflaged footage of the electric M3 prototype — codenamed ZA0 — lapping the Nürburgring, featuring a unique four-motor all-wheel-drive setup with a front-motor decoupling mode for rear-wheel-drive capability that doesn't appear on any other Neue Klasse model. The ZA0 uses a bespoke battery pack with more than 100 kWh of net energy capacity not shared with regular i3 variants, with production targeted for March 2027 — well after the standard i3 sedan, which entered pre-series production at BMW's Munich plant in February 2026.ROYAL ENFIELD SETS 2026–2027 EV AND ICE PUSHRoyal Enfield is launching its first electric motorcycles under a new sub-brand called Flying Flea, starting with the minimalist urban C6 in 2026 and followed by the scrambler-inspired S6 in 2027, both sharing a common battery architecture that signals a modular platform approach. The brand is also developing an electrified Himalayan adventure bike, pushing its EV ambitions beyond city commuting into a segment that demands tougher performance credentials around weight, range, and durability. NEXT POLESTAR WILL BE SPORTIER AND ON CHINESE PLATFORMPolestar will replace the Polestar 2 in 2027 with a lower, sportier saloon that will be meaningfully longer than today's 4.6-metre car — potentially rivalling the BMW 3 Series — with UK pricing expected to start just below £50,000. The new model shifts to a Geely Holdings group-wide platform shared with Volvo, Lotus, Lynk&Co, and Zeekr, developed at "China speed" in a 30-month cycle versus the typical five-to-seven-year European timeline, with software-defined vehicle capability and advanced central computing at its core.ITALY LAUNCHES FIRST OFFICIAL ELECTRIC PORSCHE CLUBRegistro Italiano E-motion has become the world's first Porsche club built exclusively around battery-electric vehicles, earning official recognition from Porsche after beginning life as a pandemic-era chat group for Italian Taycan owners in 2021. The club's inaugural tour brought together 131 participants and 73 vehicles — a mix of 42 Taycans and 31 Macan Electrics, including two Taycan Turbo GT Weissach models — on a multi-day Alpine drive from Porsche Experience Center Franciacorta in northern Italy to the Hans Peter Porsche Traumwerk museum near Salzburg, Austria.
This week on Sinica, I speak with Kyle Chan, a fellow at the John L. Thornton China Center at Brookings, previously a postdoc at Princeton, and author of the outstanding High-Capacity Newsletter on Substack. Kyle has emerged as one of the sharpest and most empirically grounded voices on U.S.-China technology relations, and he holds the all-time record for the most namechecks on Sinica's “Paying it forward” segment. We use his recent Financial Times op-ed on “The Great Reversal” in global technology flows and his longer High-Capacity essay on re-coupling as jumping-off points for a wide-ranging conversation about where China now sits at the global technological frontier, why the dominant decoupling narrative misses powerful structural forces pulling the two economies back together, and what all of this means for innovation, choke points, and the global tech ecosystem.4:35 – How Kyle became Kyle Chan: from Chicago School economics to development, railways, and systems thinking 12:50 – The Great Reversal: China at the technological frontier, from megawatt EV charging to LFP batteries 17:59 – The electro-industrial tech stack and China's overlapping, mutually reinforcing tech ecosystems 22:40 – Industrial strategy and time horizons: patience, persistence, and the long arc of China's auto industry 33:45 – Re-coupling under pressure: Waymo and Zeekr, Unitree robots, and the structural forces binding the two economies 40:22 – The gravity model: can political distance overwhelm technological mass? 47:01 – What China still wants from the U.S.: Cursor, GitHub, talent, and the AI brain drain 51:52 – Weaponized interdependence and the danger of securitizing everything 57:30 – Firm-level adaptation: HeyGen, Manus, and the playbook for de-sinification 1:02:58 – The view from the middle: Gulf states, Southeast Asia, and India as geopolitical arbitrageurs 1:10:18 – Engineering resilience: what policymakers are getting wrong about the systems they're buildingPaying it forward: Katrina Northrop; Grace Shao and her AI Proem newsletterRecommendations:Kyle: Wired Magazine's Made in China newsletter (by Zeyi Yang and Louise Matsakis); The Wire China Kaiser: The Wall Dancers: Searching for Freedom and Connection on the Chinese Internet by Yi-Ling LiuSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
