This week on Autonomy Markets, Grayson Brulte and Walter Piecyk discuss WeRide trying to catch up to Waymo globally, Waymo preparing to deploy Chinese-made robotaxis in Texas and the CEO of FedEx Freight's open embracement of autonomous trucking. As WeRide and Uber continue to expand throughout Europe and the Middle East together, Waymo continues to work towards deploying the Chinese-made Zeekr robotaxis now called the Ojai, with data suggesting they are now in Texas, in a politically risky move.FedEx Freight CEO John Smith declared autonomous trucks ready for prime time, a signal Grayson reads alongside Amazon entering the freight business and Uber selling down another stake in Aurora. With Amazon running one of the most sophisticated freight networks in the world and FedEx now a standalone public company, the pressure on Uber Freight is building.Wrapping up the conversation, Grayson and Walt Uber's continued European push by partnering with Autobrains on a Munich robotaxi service pending regulatory approval, and Saudi Arabia's PIF-backed Humain partnered with NVIDIA to deploy robotaxis in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.Episode Chapters00:00 SpaceX IPO3:53 WeRide and Uber Expand Across Europe7:39 Waymo Registers 45 Zeekrs in Texas10:30 Waymo's New Tampa Depot15:36 Uber Sells Down Its Aurora Stake16:33 Why Amazon Hasn't Bought an Autonomous Trucking Company?23:04 Avride Robotaxis in Texas25:26 Serve Robotics Moves Into Laundry26:29 Ferrari Rules Out Autonomy28:56 Foreign Autonomy Desk30:27 Next Week--------About The Road to AutonomyThe Road to Autonomy is the leading applied intelligence platform covering the convergence of automation, autonomy, and the Autonomy Economy.™.Through our podcasts, newsletter, and proprietary applied intelligence, we set the narrative for institutional investors, industry executives, and policymakers navigating the convergence of automation, autonomy, and economic growth.Join institutional investors and industry leaders who read This Week in The Autonomy Economy every Sunday. Quick correction upfront — yesterday's story aboutWilliam Li preparing an 8th IPO came from a Chinesearticle headline I could not fully verify. I'm pullingit back until confirmed. Credibility first always. The ES9 launched May 27th and already has a 17-weekdelivery queue. NIO stock surged 6.79% on June 1st andis trading at $6.18. The demand is real. But a seriousquestion is being asked — the ES8 sold 110,000 unitsin 8 months. Can the ES9 replicate that in a marketwhere product half-lives keep shrinking? The honest bull case: the ES9 at 498,000 yuan targetsa different buyer than the ES8 at 406,800 yuan. If NIOopened a new segment rather than cannibalizing anexisting one, the ES9 has its own ceiling to find. The honest bear case: the 17-week queue reflectsinitial pent-up pre-order demand. The real test isAugust and September when that normalizes. Huawei,Aito, Zeekr, and Yangwang are all competing for thesame buyer above 400,000 yuan. The S&P 500 crossed 7,600 for the first time today.HPE surged 30% on its biggest earnings beat since 2018.Alphabet announced plans to raise $80 billion fromstock sales dedicated to AI infrastructure. Four stories today — starting with the most importantweek in NIO's 2026 delivery story so far.NIO delivered 37,705 vehicles in May 2026 — up 62.3%year over year and up 28.4% from April's 29,356.Three brands all firing: 20,013 NIO brand, 12,029 Onvo,5,663 Firefly. Year-to-date deliveries hit 150,526 —up 68.7% year over year. Cumulative deliveries reached1,148,118. The ES8 has been the number one sellingvehicle above 400,000 yuan for five consecutive months. The ES9 has over 50,000 pre-orders — with deliveriesonly starting May 28th. June is when the ES9 volumereally arrives.William Li is reportedly preparing to take Mirattery —NIO's battery asset operator — public as his eighth IPO.Mirattery owns the batteries in NIO's 3,846 swap stations. It recently closed a Series C total of nearly 2 billionyuan with state-backed institutional investors. A MiratteryIPO gives the battery swap infrastructure its own publicvaluation — separate from NIO's stock price. NIOshareholders already own a piece of that business. The market hasn't priced it in yet.The May Chinese EV delivery rankings reshuffled.Leapmotor delivered 81,569 units — record high for thesecond consecutive month. Zeekr delivered 34,377 unitsup 81.81% year over year. Huawei HIMA delivered 46,122.Xiaomi exceeded 30,000 for the month. BYD delivered376,990 — ending its 8-month year-over-year declinestreak. The market is forming a barbell — premium brandsand value brands winning, the middle getting squeezed.NIO is firmly on the premium side of that barbell. The Iran 60-day MOU is still waiting for Trump'ssignature. Hormuz remains largely closed. Oil at $92.56.June brings Gen 5 swap stations, Onvo L60 launch, andES9 volume ramping. The setup for Q3 is building now.
This week on Autonomy Markets, Grayson Brulte and Walter Piecyk discuss Waymo's widening lead, the Ojai (Chinese-made Zeekr robotaxi) rollout's political fault lines, and the new Texas autonomous vehicle and truck database.Waymo is actively preparing to deploy a fleet of Chinese-made Zeekrs across California and Arizona, now renamed Ojai, in blue and purple states, not a red state, at least not yet. Sticking to his original call that the Zeekr is an unforced error, Grayson lays out the emerging split where Jaguars head to red states and Zeekrs head to blue and purple ones. With Magna now producing roughly 250 vehicles a month, Waymo is on pace for 6,000 cars by year-end, and Walt argues the real unlock comes when the sensor stack gets cheaper and Waymo begins to add more than 1,000 new vehicles a month on the road.In Texas, the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles launched the Automated Motor Vehicle Lookup, where any member of the public can look up the fleet size of any AV operator in the state along with any complaints that might be filed.Wrapping up the conversation, Grayson and Walt discussed the launch of Wayve Labs, Zoox getting an undeserved pass thanks to Amazon and BYD's willingness to compensate owners when God's Eye is engaged during an incident.Episode Chapters00:00 Waymo Deploys the Ojai06:40 Waymo Production Math08:55 Waymo's Expanding Lead15:15 Texas Automated Motor Vehicle Lookup25:00 Wayve Labs32:10 3,760 Miles Across Canada. Shoot us a Text.Episode #1336: Chinese automakers quietly prep a Canadian invasion, dealers ramp up ad spend amid tariff uncertainty, and even the Cozy Coupe gets an EV twistShow Notes with links:Chinese automakers are laying the groundwork to enter Canada, with hiring, vehicle sightings, and dealer conversations signaling real momentum. With a new 49K EV import quota opening this year, brands like BYD, Geely, and Chery are positioning early for market entry.Geely's Zeekr brand is already hiring senior leadership in Toronto, signaling active plans for sales, service, and dealer network development.Chery is testing vehicles in Toronto and courting Canadian dealers, even flying some to the Beijing Auto Show to build early relationships.BYD is moving fastest on retail, aiming to open as many as 20 stores this year through local partnerships.Despite the activity, no official quota allocations have been issued yet, and sales likely won't begin until late this year.Rising tariffs and shifting inventory levels are putting dealer marketing back in the spotlight. As uncertainty creeps into pricing and supply, dealers are leaning harder into advertising to guide consumers.Dealers spent $9.22B on advertising last year, up 4% and nearing pre-pandemic levels as the market stabilizes.Digital dominates, capturing 73% of ad budgets, with third-party listings, search, and social leading the chargeDealers spent an average of $705 per new vehicle sold on advertising, still well above pre-pandemic levels despite a slight year-over-year dip.Third-party listing sites alone captured over 20% of total ad spend, making them the single largest channel in dealer marketing budgets.“The future of the U.S. auto industry is murky… effects are difficult to quantify,” said NADA Chief Economist Patrick Manzi.Even the toy aisle isn't immune to the EV transition. Little Tikes is giving its iconic Cozy Coupe a plug-in twist, introducing a playful charging station that mirrors the real-world shift from gas pumps to electrons.Little Tikes launched a $33 “Cozy E-Charging Station” accessory for its classic Cozy Coupe, aimed at kids ages 18 months to 5 years. The plug fits right into the existing fuel door, signaling how seamlessly EVs are replacing gas—even in pretend play. The Cozy Coupe itself still runs Flintstones-style, powered by kids' feet—not batteries. The toy has sold up to 500,000 units annually at its peak, making it one of the most recognizable “vehicles” in America. At $65 for the car, it may be the cheapest “EV” on the market, even if range is limited to the living room.Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/
Episode #250 of China EVs & More dives into a turning point moment for the global auto industry as China's EV market enters a new phase ahead of the Beijing Auto Show.Tu Le and Lei Xing break down an explosion of flagship SUV launches across Chinese brands — from NIO, XPeng, Zeekr, and LeapMotor — all competing in the same $40K–$60K range with similar tech, features, and performance. The result? A hyper-competitive market where price has become the ultimate differentiator. But that's just one side of the story. The episode also explores:Why Chinese EVs are converging on identical feature sets (800V, ADAS, AI chassis)How foreign automakers (VW, Nissan, Audi) are attempting a comeback in ChinaWhy marketing costs and partnerships may determine survival for legacy OEMsAnd how China's EV ecosystem is shifting from price wars → brand differentiationThis is not just about China anymore — it's about who wins the global auto reset.
This week, we've been driving a PHEV - Plug in Hybrid, how do they work are they worth it for those not quite ready for an EV? We talk to a man with an original MG electric car, ready to move to his AION A story about Zeekr losing business to Deepal, and a young man with electric desires!

You can be like them by clicking here: https://www.patreon.com/EVNewsDailyRENAULT CHIEF ATTACKS "FAKE" PHEVS, EYES RANGE EXTENDERSRenault CEO François Provost has condemned short-range plug-in hybrids from German and Chinese manufacturers as "fake PHEVs" that discourage regular charging and undermine consumer and regulatory confidence in electrified vehicles. Renault is exploring range-extender EV (EREV) technology for its next-generation electric platform — underpinning models like the Scenic successor — where a combustion engine acts only as a generator for trips up to 1,000km, and Provost is pushing for EREVs to be explicitly permitted for sale in the EU and UK beyond the 2035 all-BEV mandate.NORWAY'S EV SHARE RECOVERS AND HITS 98%Norway registered 7,272 new passenger cars in February 2026, with BEVs accounting for 7,127 of them — a 98.01% market share — as the market began to stabilise after a turbulent end to 2025 driven by expiring VAT exemptions. OFV Director Geir Inge Stokke compared the post-surge normalisation to the period following the 2022 VAT reform, with diesel, petrol PHEVs, hybrids, and pure petrol cars dividing up the remaining 2% between them. NORWAY PASSES ONE MILLION BATTERY-ELECTRIC VEHICLESNorway's battery-electric passenger car fleet has crossed one million, with 951,300 BEV passenger cars and 50,300 BEV light commercial vehicles (LCVs) on the road, representing 32.4% of all passenger cars in the country's 2.94 million-strong fleet. Oslo leads with a 48.9% BEV share in its passenger car fleet and is expected to crack 50% before summer, while rural Finnmark trails at 12.2%, and the Norwegian EV Association's Christina Bu says the LCV transition — currently at just 9.7% — urgently needs to accelerate.UPTAKE SPREADS BEYOND WEALTHIER EARLY ADOPTERSResearch from charging firm char.gy and think tank New Automotive shows that EV adoption in England, once closely tied to wealth as measured by the Index of Multiple Deprivation, has spread significantly into poorer areas by Q3 2024–2025, with growth rates converging across most neighbourhoods. Used BEV transactions surged 45.7% in 2025 to a record 274,815 units, lifting used BEV market share to 3.5%, and with more than two million plug-in vehicles now on UK roads, the main remaining challenge is delivering reliable, affordable on-street charging in the most disadvantaged communities. QUANTUMSCAPE UNVEILS PRODUCTION LINE IN CALIFORNIAQuantumScape officially inaugurated its Eagle Line — a highly automated solid-state battery pilot production facility in San Jose, California — on February 4, 2026, designed not for mass production by QuantumScape itself but as a scalable blueprint that licensing partners, including Volkswagen (which has invested over $300 million), can replicate at gigawatt-hour scale in their own plants. With roughly $850 million in liquidity but a history of burning over $100 million annually and Volkswagen having scaled back its involvement in 2023 after missed timelines, QuantumScape's strategy pivot toward licensing means the next 18–24 months are critical for securing a major customer agreement.KIA UK SETS EV2 FIRST DRIVE WEEKENDSKia UK will run First Drive Weekend events for the EV2 across nearly all 190 UK dealers from April 16 to June 27, 2026, offering structured 30-minute accompanied drives ahead of first deliveries expected later in the year. The EV2 is a compact SUV just over four metres long built on the 400V E-GMP platform, supporting 10%–80% DC rapid charging in around 30 minutes, with two battery options (42.2kWh and 61.0kWh) and an expected starting price of around £25,000 — potentially undercutting rivals like the Renault 5 and Ford Puma Gen-E after the UK's £3,750 plug-in vehicle grant.BMW TEASES FOUR-MOTOR ELECTRIC M3 AT NÜRBURGRINGBMW M has released camouflaged footage of the electric M3 prototype — codenamed ZA0 — lapping the Nürburgring, featuring a unique four-motor all-wheel-drive setup with a front-motor decoupling mode for rear-wheel-drive capability that doesn't appear on any other Neue Klasse model. The ZA0 uses a bespoke battery pack with more than 100 kWh of net energy capacity not shared with regular i3 variants, with production targeted for March 2027 — well after the standard i3 sedan, which entered pre-series production at BMW's Munich plant in February 2026.ROYAL ENFIELD SETS 2026–2027 EV AND ICE PUSHRoyal Enfield is launching its first electric motorcycles under a new sub-brand called Flying Flea, starting with the minimalist urban C6 in 2026 and followed by the scrambler-inspired S6 in 2027, both sharing a common battery architecture that signals a modular platform approach. The brand is also developing an electrified Himalayan adventure bike, pushing its EV ambitions beyond city commuting into a segment that demands tougher performance credentials around weight, range, and durability. NEXT POLESTAR WILL BE SPORTIER AND ON CHINESE PLATFORMPolestar will replace the Polestar 2 in 2027 with a lower, sportier saloon that will be meaningfully longer than today's 4.6-metre car — potentially rivalling the BMW 3 Series — with UK pricing expected to start just below £50,000. The new model shifts to a Geely Holdings group-wide platform shared with Volvo, Lotus, Lynk&Co, and Zeekr, developed at "China speed" in a 30-month cycle versus the typical five-to-seven-year European timeline, with software-defined vehicle capability and advanced central computing at its core.ITALY LAUNCHES FIRST OFFICIAL ELECTRIC PORSCHE CLUBRegistro Italiano E-motion has become the world's first Porsche club built exclusively around battery-electric vehicles, earning official recognition from Porsche after beginning life as a pandemic-era chat group for Italian Taycan owners in 2021. The club's inaugural tour brought together 131 participants and 73 vehicles — a mix of 42 Taycans and 31 Macan Electrics, including two Taycan Turbo GT Weissach models — on a multi-day Alpine drive from Porsche Experience Center Franciacorta in northern Italy to the Hans Peter Porsche Traumwerk museum near Salzburg, Austria.

This week on Sinica, I speak with Kyle Chan, a fellow at the John L. Thornton China Center at Brookings, previously a postdoc at Princeton, and author of the outstanding High-Capacity Newsletter on Substack. Kyle has emerged as one of the sharpest and most empirically grounded voices on U.S.-China technology relations, and he holds the all-time record for the most namechecks on Sinica's “Paying it forward” segment. We use his recent Financial Times op-ed on “The Great Reversal” in global technology flows and his longer High-Capacity essay on re-coupling as jumping-off points for a wide-ranging conversation about where China now sits at the global technological frontier, why the dominant decoupling narrative misses powerful structural forces pulling the two economies back together, and what all of this means for innovation, choke points, and the global tech ecosystem.4:35 – How Kyle became Kyle Chan: from Chicago School economics to development, railways, and systems thinking 12:50 – The Great Reversal: China at the technological frontier, from megawatt EV charging to LFP batteries 17:59 – The electro-industrial tech stack and China's overlapping, mutually reinforcing tech ecosystems 22:40 – Industrial strategy and time horizons: patience, persistence, and the long arc of China's auto industry 33:45 – Re-coupling under pressure: Waymo and Zeekr, Unitree robots, and the structural forces binding the two economies 40:22 – The gravity model: can political distance overwhelm technological mass? 47:01 – What China still wants from the U.S.: Cursor, GitHub, talent, and the AI brain drain 51:52 – Weaponized interdependence and the danger of securitizing everything 57:30 – Firm-level adaptation: HeyGen, Manus, and the playbook for de-sinification 1:02:58 – The view from the middle: Gulf states, Southeast Asia, and India as geopolitical arbitrageurs 1:10:18 – Engineering resilience: what policymakers are getting wrong about the systems they're buildingPaying it forward: Katrina Northrop; Grace Shao and her AI Proem newsletterRecommendations:Kyle: Wired Magazine's Made in China newsletter (by Zeyi Yang and Louise Matsakis); The Wire China Kaiser: The Wall Dancers: Searching for Freedom and Connection on the Chinese Internet by Yi-Ling LiuSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
This week on Autonomy Markets, Grayson Brulte and Walter Piecyk discuss whether Waymo has finally solved the supply constraint question following reports of a deal for 50,000 Hyundai vehicles by 2028. They break down the economics, theorizing a $50,000 per-vehicle cost that likely includes line-fit sensors, a price point that Grayson argues destroys the bear case that autonomous vehicles cannot cost-effectively scale. The conversation then shifts to hardware as Walt puts on his inspector hat, spotting a hidden Class 8 truck graphic in Waymo's latest blog post. This revelation sparks a debate on if Waymo is planning a return to trucking in 2027 to coincide with the new Daimler Truck's new Freightliner Cascadia redundant chassis platform. They also analyze Waymo's 6th Generation Driver, noting the emphasis on custom silicon and aggressive camera cleaning systems seems to mimic Tesla's approach. On the Foreign Autonomy Desk, they discuss Lyft's plan to launch Baidu RT6 robotaxis in London and Uber's deployment of Chinese robotaxis in Dubai. While Uber touts its partners, Grayson provides ground truth on the Chinese market, arguing that strict geofences and residency restrictions mean the technology is not as far ahead as Western media portrays.Looking at the broader ecosystem, Grayson and Walt analyze Aurora's pivot to upfitting International trucks, a strategy shift that mirrors competitor Kodiak, along with Kodiak's new defense partnership with the United States Marine Corps.Closing out the show, they discuss the current regulatory environment for autonomous vehicles and NHTSA's Automated Vehicle Safety Public Meeting upcoming in March and Waymo calling for D.C. residents to advocate for autonomous vehicles.Episode Chapters0:00 Waymo's Reported 50,000 Robotaxi Hyundai Deal03:26 The $50,000 Robotaxi Economics06:20 Zeekr & Waymo/Magna Mesa Upfitting Plant10:11 Scaling to 750,000 Autonomous Vehicles17:09 Waymo Gen 6: Custom Silicon & Improved Cameras23:21 Uber's Narrative vs. Waymo's Reality28:09 Lyft's Flexdrive Advantage31:52 Inspector Walt: Waymo's Autonomous Truck Tease33:41 Aurora's Pivot & Kodiak's Marine Corps Deal41:39 Foreign Autonomy Desk: Lyft in London & Uber in Dubai45:09 The Regulatory Tide Turns48:38 Hyundai: The Arms Dealer of AutonomyRecorded on Friday, February 13, 2026--------About The Road to AutonomyThe Road to Autonomy is the definitive media brand covering the Autonomy Economy™. Jill and Tom open a topic-packed show acknowledging the winners of the 2026 North American Car of the Year voting. Listen in for complete list. Moving on, Tom noted that General Motors CEO Mary Barra said publicly something he had long feared regarding plug-in hybrids. Barra suggests the news will impact future product development. Subsequent to last week's Zeekr conversation, Tom shared some interesting news regarding the prices of the Chinese cars in Mexico versus the maker's home market. Still in the first segment, Jill reviews the 2026 Chevrolet Silverado EV in high-end Trail Boss trim. Listen in for her complete review. In the second segment, the hosts welcome Eric Ruble of Nissan to discuss the design of the all-new 2026 Leaf electric crossover. Eric shares a number of insider details related to the Leaf's overall look, including some fun insights regarding hidden Easter eggs hidden in the vehicle's trim. In the last segment Jill is subjected to Tom's “2026 Honda Accord” quiz, including a Mexican Burger King bonus question. After the quiz, Jill shares her impressions of riding in a Waymo autonomous taxi.

Jill is back in the co-host seat this week for a topic-packed episode. Tom opens the show asking if $61,000 seems like a lot for a Hyundai—any Hyundai. The hosts discuss the Korean maker's luxury/value equation, and note that Tom's test car, a 2026 Palisade Calligraphy Hybrid is, without question, a luxury vehicle. Listen in for more of the conversation. Tom goes on to share his frustration with Stellantis for killing all of Jeep's “4Xe” plug-in hybrids, along with the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid. Listen in for some crankiness. Still in the first segment, Jill details her CES Chinese-car adventure. Jill was able to take short drives in a number of luxury electric Zeekr models (a division of Volvo's parent company Geely) and came away very impressed. Her quick takes on these vehicles are worth a listen. Are these premium EVs coming to the U.S? here's the scoop. In the second segment, Jill and Tom are joined by friend of show and sustainability expert Robert Collangelo. Robert addresses the fallacy that EVs are a threat to the U.S. electric grid, and details the real power-consumption challenges that lay ahead for the country. It's a great conversation you don't want to miss. In the last segment Jill is subjected to Tom's “Is it a Dodge?” quiz.
