Shoot us a Text. With 2 days left in January, that means there are only 2 days left to get discounted tickets to ASOTU CON! Today, we're talking about VW potentially bringing manufacturing to the US to avoid tariffs, Honda planning to introduce a sub $30K EV in the US, and how iPhones can now text on the SpaceX Starlink satellite network.Show Notes with links:Volkswagen Group is exploring plans to build Audi and Porsche models in the U.S. if President Donald Trump imposes high tariffs on vehicle imports from Europe and Mexico. This proactive move aims to safeguard the brands from potential trade barriers that could significantly impact profitability.Unlike the VW brand, which already has U.S. production, Audi and Porsche models sold in the U.S. are currently imported, making them vulnerable to tariffs.VW's Chattanooga plant, which produces the VW Atlas and ID.4, has excess capacity and could be expanded for luxury models.Another option is VW's upcoming South Carolina plant for the Scout brand, which could also accommodate Audi production.A 10% tariff on European imports could reduce VW Group's profits by 5-10%, while a 25% tariff on Mexican imports could result in a 15% hit, according to Moody's.Honda is stepping into the affordable EV space with a sub-$30,000 electric vehicle that could hit U.S. dealerships as early as 2026. A third of Honda's global sales are EVs and it aims to boost its U.S. EV presence. The new EV will be locally built in Ohio, starting with battery production, to reduce costs. It will be a part of the new Honda 0 Series and will follow Honda's higher-end 0 Series SUV and sedan, expected to cost $50K–$60K.Honda sold over 33,000 Prologue SUVs last year, outperforming the Chevy Equinox and Cadillac Lyriq, despite sharing GM's Ultium platform. The affordable EV could compete directly with GM's next-gen Chevy Bolt, also slated for a 2026 launch at a similar price point.Apple's latest iPhone update gives T-Mobile users access to SpaceX's Starlink network, marking a new era of connectivity.iOS 18.3 introduces support for SpaceX and T-Mobile's direct-to-cell satellite texting, meaning text messaging via satellite in areas without cellular coverageThe feature was previously limited to select Android devices, including Samsung models.Beta testers have begun receiving texts confirming access to satellite messaging.Future updates aim to add voice and data capabilities for complete off-grid connectivity.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email
This week, Benjamin drives the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV, a mainstream offering found on the same Ultium platform as many other high end EVs like the Acura ZDX and Cadillac Lyriq. Benjamin discusses his experience in the Chevy, and compares it to other popular mainstream options like the the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Nissan Ariya and VW ID.4. The pair also discuss whether GM is on track or not in this highly competitive segment. Then Sami checks out the 2025 Kia Carnival Hybrid, which swaps out the V6 from the gas model for a hybrid powertrain boasting nearly 50 percent better fuel efficiency, without much of a compromise. But is this upgraded Carnival a big deal in the minivan market? How does it compare to the Toyota Sienna, Chrysler Pacifica and Honda Odyssey? Sami discusses it all on this week's episode. Thanks for listening!!

Shoot us a Text.Donald Trump's return to the White House could disrupt the auto industry's EV ambitions. Plus, Elon Musk's advisory role with the new administration and his plans for autonomous tech. And, IKEA opens its first stand-alone restaurant in London.Show Notes with links:Former President Donald Trump has won the 2024 election, and his return could lead to major shifts for the auto industry, especially around electric vehicle (EV) policies, trade, and incentives. Here's what might be in limbo for automakers:EV Regulations: Trump may roll back aggressive EV mandates set under Biden, reducing pressure on automakers to hit strict electrification targets.Tax Credits: Biden-era EV tax credits could be at risk, impacting demand and profitability for manufacturers deeply invested in electric tech.California's Emission Standards: Trump might revoke California's right to set its own emissions standards, affecting states that follow its lead.Trade Policies: Trump may tighten restrictions on Chinese vehicle parts, intending to boost domestic production but likely increasing vehicle costs. The Elon factor: Here's how Musk's involvement could shape auto policies and beyond:Trump has proposed forming a government efficiency committee led by Musk, aiming to cut $2 trillion from the federal budget. Musk has already expressed his interest in reducing government spending by 30%.Musk advocates for a unified federal approval process for autonomous vehicles, reducing state-by-state regulatory inconsistencies. He commented, “If there is a department of government efficiency, I'll try to make that happen.”While Trump is generally less favorable toward EV mandates, analysts speculate that Musk's influence may push for selective pro-EV policies that align with Tesla's interests.Musk, a long-time proponent of U.S.-based manufacturing, may support Trump's trade stance on limiting Chinese parts imports, which could impact supply chains and costs for EV makers.Tesla stocks spiked 15% following the election, underscoring investor optimism over Musk's potential influence in the new administration.General Motors has claimed the number two spot in EV sales in the U.S. for Q3 2024, with 32,000 EVs sold across multiple brands. Ford, however, disputes GM's approach to these numbers.GM's EV lineup includes the Chevy Silverado, Blazer, Equinox EVs, GMC Hummer EV, and Cadillac Lyriq, all on the Ultium platform.GM has sold 370,000 EVs in North America since 2016, with 300,000 of those in the U.S. Tesla remains far ahead, with over 5 million units sold globally since 2008.Ford argues it's still the “No. 2 best-selling EV brand,” claiming GM's figures count all brands together, altering the comparison. From Reddit polls to repeat diners, IKEA's food offerings are beloved, with many customers visiting the store just for the food which is why IKEA's first stand-alone restaurant next to its Hammersmith store in London marks a fresh chapter for the brand, leveraging its famous Swedish Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

General Motors (GM) just released their results for the third quarter of 2024, and they tell a story of a remarkable turnaround in their EV business. But is this turnaround a sign of things to come? Have they got all those production issues in the rear-view mirror? Or will GM continue to struggle to eat into Tesla's dominance. After many years of promising to bring compelling EVs to market, for so long GM's EV volumes were driven almost entirely by the Bolt and latterly the Bolt EUV. Those were cars built on ageing technology and had to prop up GM whilst they developed their Ultium Cells partnership with LG. That project saw plenty of investment, but it stumbled and stalled as the production ramp-up was plagued by teething problems. On today's podcast we'll: Record-Breaking Sales Figures: Explore how GM achieved a 60% surge in electric vehicle sales, reaching a new record Market Share Gains: Understand GM's strategies and the growing consumer acceptance of its electric offerings. Diverse EV Portfolio: Remind you about GM's range of electric vehicles that cater to a variety of preferences, including standout models like the Chevrolet Equinox EV and Cadillac Lyriq. Future Plans for Electrification: Talk about GM's ambitious plans for expanding its EV lineup, including upcoming models and investments that aim to capture a larger segment of the market. Challenges and Opportunities Ahead: And finally get some insight into the challenges GM faces in the competitive electric vehicle landscape, as well as the opportunities that could drive future growth.

Shoot us a Text.We are rounding down a week of east coast travel here on the last day of the NAMAD Annual Membership Meeting. Today we are looking at Ford's recently announced change in their EV plans and how EVs may not be slowing down as much as some sources may say.Show Notes with links:Ford is adjusting its electrification plans, canceling its long-planned three-row electric crossovers and delaying the next-generation full-size electric pickup by 18 months. The automaker will now focus on a family of hybrid three-row crossovers.Ford's changes could result in up to $1.9 billion in costs, including a $400 million noncash charge related to the cancellation of the crossover.CFO John Lawler: "We looked where the segment was evolving, the amount of competition, the customer needs, and then, the size of the battery that needs to go in a pure EV, the cost structure, the pricing, We could not put together a vehicle that met our requirements to be profitable in the first 12 months of launch."The next-gen full-size electric pickup's launch has been pushed to late 2027.Moving forward, Lawler said EVs would represent roughly 30 percent of Ford's capital expenditure, down from a planned 40 percent.Despite talks of an EV slowdown, the U.S. market saw record-breaking sales in Q2 2024, with 18 electric models surpassing 5,000 units sold. Tesla, Ford, and Hyundai lead, but newcomers are gaining ground.EV sales hit a record 320,463 units in Q2, up 11% from last year and 23% from Q1.The 18 models that sold 5K units: Tesla Model Y, Model 3, Model X and Cybertruck; Ford Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning; Hyundai IONIQ 5; Toyota bZ4X; Rivian R1S; Cadillac Lyriq; BMW i4; Kia EV6, EV9, and Niro; Chevrolet Blazer EV; Volkswagen ID.4; Mercedes EQE; and Nissan Ariya. As we previously reported, Tesla's market share dipped below 50% for the first time, now at 49.7%, and Hyundai Motor Group (including Kia and Genesis) claimed 10% of the U.S. EV market, outperforming Ford (7.4%) and GM (6.3%)Stephanie Valdez Streaty, Cox Automotive Industry Insights Director said: “Automakers that deliver the right product at the right price and offer an excellent consumer experience will lead the way in EV adoption.”Chick-Fil-A is stepping into the entertainment arena with plans to launch its own streaming service, focusing on family-friendly content. The fast-food giant is partnering with top production companies to create original shows, marking a bold move into the media landscape.Chick-Fil-A is developing original content for a new streaming platform. The focus will be on family-friendly shows, particularly in the unscripted genre.Collaborations include production companies behind popular series like NBC's The Wall and Netflix's 13 Reasons Why.A 10-episode family-friendly game show has already been greenlit.Budgets for these projects are reported Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Shoot us a Text. The dog days of summer are well upon us, and that means a great opportunity to love people more than cars. Today we're talking about Ford and Stellantis's Q2 earnings reports, GM's early EV issues that led to buybacks, and Southwest's shift to assigned seating.Show Notes with linksNot everyone can be GM, as Ford's income dropped 4.5% to $1.8 billion, despite a revenue increase of 6.4% to $47.8 billion, driven by strong commercial vehicle sales. Meanwhile, Stellantis's net income plummeted 48% to €5.6 billion in the first half of 2024, with operating margins falling below 10%.Ford's adjusted earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) fell 27% to $2.8 billion as CFO John Lawler cited $800 million in increased warranty expenses due to older vehicle recalls.Ford Pro division shined with $2.6 billion earnings and 15.1% profit margins, while the Model e EV unit reported a $1.1 billion loss.Stellantis struggled the most in North America, including an 18% shipment decline and price pressures.CFO Natalie Knight said “There are operational issues we have had in North America where I think we could have performed stronger,” suggesting measures like output and price cuts, inventory reductions, and cost-saving initiatives to address these operational issues.GM's Ultium vehicles have faced significant issues due to build quality and safety concerns, including fire risk, leading to buybacks and now reentry into the used market at steep discounts.Early 2023 and 2024 Chevy Blazer EVs suffered from software issues, leading to a stop sale, and the Cadillac Lyriq has had less publicized issues around problems with build quality, both leading to buybacksVehicles reacquired by GM in this process do show “Reacquired by Manufacturer” on the vehicle history report.Models like the 2024 Chevy Blazer EV RS and Cadillac Lyriq are now available at significant discounts, sometimes over $20,000 below original MSRP making an impact in the used car market.Southwest Airlines is making significant changes by moving away from its 50 year old policy of open seating. The airline will soon introduce assigned seating and premium options with extra legroom, aiming to appeal to a broader range of passengers and enhance profitability.Extensive testing has taken place, including simulations and employee trials, ensured the new boarding process would not slow down operations. The changes come as Southwest faces profitability challenges and competition from rivals with more extensive networks and high-end offerings.CEO Bob Jordan shared he expects it to generate over $1 billion in additional revenue selling extras like those that allow passengers to board sooner."This is the right change at the right time," stated CEO Bob Jordan, indicating confidence in the new strategy.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

The 2024 Cadillac LYRIQ (that's the first time we'll use all caps for the name, we promise!) is the car du jour, as Benjamin shares all his thoughts about this vehicle that went into production in 2022, but struggled to meet the quality demands of the market and its high-end branding. Now with seemingly all the bugs sorted out(?), Benjamin is here to tell you how it is, and if it's a standout in the crowded field of luxury EVs. Then the guys discuss a variety of automotive news, starting with a 5 billion dollar investment from VW into an EV maker, that might overshadow the German company's own ambitions, and the fatter, slower and newer BMW M5. The 2024 Blazer EV is the first Chevrolet vehicle on General Motors' new Ultium electric platform, which is shared by the Honda Prologue EV and Cadillac Lyriq. We offer our first impressions of the new Blazer, including its driving dynamics, build quality, and why GM ordered dealers to stop selling it. We also discuss the future of internal combustion engines and whether or not EVs will dominate the car market in the next decade. Also, we debate whether the 2025 Toyota Camry hybrid is worth the wait, or is the recently updated 2024 Honda Accord hybrid. Jill and Tom opened the show by welcoming new listeners. The last few episodes of the Car Stuff Podcast have been very popular. Tom expressed his disappointment that Jill had selected such a boring donut for today's episode. The hosts had stopped by Morkes Chocolate in Palatine, IL, together for donuts prior to the show. Tom discussed briefly his early but favorable impressions of the Chevrolet Trailblazer RS he is currently evaluating. Jill and Tom then reviewed Cadillac's first EV, the Cadillac Lyriq each had extended time with. Tom noted having “one and a half” issues with the car, but both hosts were generally very impressed. Listen in for the full review, including driving-range findings. In the second segment the hosts welcomed Stanley Horaczek of Popular Science to the show. Stanley walked the hosts through the site's new Top 5 Auto Trends for 2024 list. Jill is subjected to Tom's conceptually flawed “NOVAS” quiz in the third segment. Did Jill score on the Billy Joel bonus question? The hosts wrapped up the show talking about the placement of some EV charging stations in poorly lit locations.

The Automotive Troublemaker w/ Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier
It's a great Tuesday to get some people on the road as we talk about Ford's recent cuts to F150 Lighting prices. We also talk about GM selling all the cars they are making, as well as a new solution to solve 2 energy problems at once. The EV pricing wars are heating up as Ford Motor Co. has cut prices for its F-150 Lightning electric pickup trucks between $6,000 to $10,000, depending on the model. Marin Gjaja, the chief customer officer for Ford's EV unit, explained the price reductions are due to lower material costs and higher production capacityThe cheapest Lightning model, the commercial-focused Pro trim, will now start at $51,990, still 25% more expensive than at launch in April 2022. The highest-priced trim, the extended-range Platinum model, has been reduced by $6,079 to $93,990Ford is also adding an additional $1000 discount for customers ordering a truck before the end of JulyThe $7500 federal tax credit also applies to trucks under $80k meaning the entry level truck with all current discounts and credits costs: $43,490Ford CEO Jim Farley has previously cautioned against aggressive price cuts, arguing they can damage the resale value of vehicles and disappoint customers who purchased at higher prices.According to Rory Harvey, GM's North America president, the company has strong demand and is having some trouble delivering units to Dealers fast enough. At a Lansing, Michigan event, Harvey said, "At this particular point in time, we could just about sell every product that we can build."He partially credits the management of demand to the fact that "GM very strongly continues to have discipline in terms of incentives…”As far as challenges go, transporting vehicles from the plant to the dealerships by truck or rail is slower than they would like. When it comes to EV sales, Harvey declined to directly attribute the lower-than-expected sales of GM's newest electric vehicles, the GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac Lyriq, to issues with Ultium batteries, a potential bottleneck in production. GM sold 1,348 Lyriqs and 47 Hummers in the second quarter however Harvey predicts a significant increase in the second half of the yearOne California company in Lancaster, California, is giving new life to used EV batteries to store solar power, tackling two key issues in renewable energy: evening supply and battery disposal.B2U Storage Solutions is using retired EV batteries that still retain 60% to 70% of their original charge capacity to connect to a series of solar panels and then sells the solar power back to the grid during peak demand periods in the evening.Their site includes dozens of trailers full of the used EV batteries which can store solar power for five to six years before being recycled.Supply is the primary constraint but is obviously expected to increase as EV adoption growsThe company is currently profitable.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

It's EV News Briefly for Thursday 23rd March. I'll be back as usual at 5pm UK time, that's Midday Eastern, for the full podcast. Patreon supporters get the episodes as soon as they're ready AND ad free. You can be like them by clicking here. Ford expects its EV business unit to lose $3 billion in 2023, with total losses of $6 billion projected from 2021-2023, though it aims to build 2 million electric vehicles by late 2026. Tesla expects to lose the full $7,500 federal tax credit on its cheapest electric car, the Model 3 Standard Range, due to its battery cells being sourced from China, which would make it ineligible for the new tax credit program.
