Spanish performance brand Cupra has taken the axe to its Formentor VZe plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUV, cutting more than $20,000 off 2024 model year stock. Now $47,990 drive-away, down from around $67,990. The move follows a 70 per cent drop in sales following the removal of the Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) exemption in April, which cut around a third off the price of a plug-in hybrid when purchased through a novated lease. With a facelifted Formentor VZe hybrid due early next year Cupra Australia decided to slash remaining stock. The new model will increase the current models electric only range from 50 to 100km and feature a new 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine and larger battery. En la edición de hoy de Radar Empresarial, revisamos la fuerte caída que experimentó este lunes la automotriz china BYD. La compañía vio cómo sus acciones descendían más de un 5%, alcanzando su nivel más bajo en los últimos cinco meses. Esta reacción del mercado responde a unos resultados financieros que no cumplieron con las expectativas. El beneficio neto de la empresa se redujo un 30%, situándose en torno a los 895 millones de dólares. Esto ocurrió a pesar de que sus ingresos aumentaron un 14% en comparación con el año anterior. ¿Qué explica entonces esta disminución en las ganancias? Según BYD, la causa principal ha sido la intensa competencia en precios y las campañas de marketing cada vez más agresivas. En el mercado automovilístico chino, se libra actualmente una intensa guerra de precios. Durante los últimos dos años, el valor medio de los coches ha descendido en hasta 20.000 dólares. Ante esta situación, el gobierno chino ha advertido que tomará medidas contra las empresas que continúen incentivando reducciones de precios. A nivel global, el panorama muestra que solo las firmas chinas parecen capaces de hacer frente entre sí, mientras que Europa y Estados Unidos observan con preocupación el avance del coloso asiático en la industria automotriz. Los datos de ventas de julio evidencian esta tendencia. Tesla, por ejemplo, sufrió un desplome del 86% en sus ventas en Europa durante ese mes. Mientras tanto, algunos fabricantes europeos muestran signos de recuperación, como Volkswagen, que elevó su participación de mercado al 28%, y Cupra, que aumentó sus ventas en un 45%. No obstante, las marcas chinas continúan creciendo a un ritmo impresionante: BYD, por su parte, incrementó sus matriculaciones en un 225%. Frente a este escenario, la compañía ha decidido ajustar su estrategia global. La planta que inauguró en 2024 en Tailandia, originalmente pensada para abastecer el mercado del sudeste asiático, ahora producirá vehículos destinados a Europa. Cabe recordar que BYD es una empresa relativamente joven, fundada en 2003 por el químico Wang Chuanfu. Su primer modelo no tuvo aceptación por su diseño poco atractivo, pero con el lanzamiento del BYD F3, que se asemejaba mucho al Toyota Corolla, logró conquistar al público y consolidarse en el sector.

Driving the relatively new Cupra Tavascan mid-sized electric SUV today – thehigher grade Tavascan VZ at $79,990 driveaway, a striking coupe style mid-sizedSUV with dual motor 250kW all-wheel drive with electronic adaptive suspension,large 21-inch alloy wheels, six drive modes, a full suite of active and passivesafety elements and an interior design that is unique and very appealing. Cupraalways highlight wheels and interior elements with copper trim and its verydistinctive although some of this makers dark colours I find a little sombre andlacking vibrance. As a driver not so, this is a spritely performer with a 0 to100km/hour time of 5.5 seconds, the adaptive suspension providing a greatride/handling balance with all-wheel drive and with steering weight and feel nicelybalanced to the cars selected drive modes. Brake pedal feel howeverdisappointing, too much pushback and inconsistency in feel and response and Iknow of no other performance skewed car at this price point retaining rear drumbrakes. The brakes are simply not confidence inspiring under heavy use.
