OUTSIDE THE BOARDS™ PODCASTSEASON #2 | EPISODE #9: Agapito Morgan & Dale JohnsonRECORDED: April 15th, 2022On this Episode of Outside The Boards, I'm incredibly excited to welcome all of you to this Episode of Outside The Boards Podcast and introduce my next guests Mr. Agapito Morgan and Dale Johnson, Chairman and Committee Member of the United States Polo Association's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee. Aga Morgan currently serves as the Commercial Healthcare Leader with Key Bank. In this role, he is focused on growing Key's national commercial banking healthcare business in collaboration with healthcare industry coverage teams within KeyBanc Capital Markets, Enterprise Healthcare Payments and Consumer Banking. Additionally, he serves as Co-Chair of the Commercial Bank's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council and as a member of the Bank's Commercial Credit Risk Committee. Aga is originally from Washington D.C. and now lives in Weston Connecticut. His path in polo begin 8 years ago when he was introduce to polo by a close friend. Not knowing what he was getting into he took a lesson at Yale University. The first time he hit the ball clean, he was hooked. He would go on to immerse himself into the sport. Today, Morgan is a member of the Yale Polo Club, but has played extensively around the country. Dale Johnson is currently the Manager of Global Platforms for Visa ,and is the Founder of the Equine Chain. A company created to credential horses on the blockchain. Dale is from  Oakland California, and recently returned to his hometown after living in San Francisco's Bay Area. Dale's involvement with horses and ultimately polo began generations earlier with his grandfather who was as a horseman on a cattle ranch north of Houston, his grandfather, Papa Charlie, who was slave from Georgia, founded the ranch with his wife Penny. Everyone up until Dale's grandfather was born on the ranch. All the fundamentals of horsemanship never left and trickled down to Dale's father and ultimately him. Dale's introduction to polo came from a visit to Buneas Aires and the purchase of pair of polo boots. He came home and spent his first bonus on a polo clinic. But unlike hiting a ball or the thrill of riding, Dale was attracted to the game by how challenging it was. Aga and Dale are doing incredible things for the sport and are looking to change polo's image and become a more inclusive and accessible sport to everyone interested in picking up a mallet. Their success at the Detroit Polo Club, which you will learn more on this podcast, is a perfect model to expand to other locations across the country and I look forward at the prospect of creating a similar program in Chicago. I am honored to call Aga and Dale friends and excited to see them continue to  do great things for the game.  WELCOME TO OUTSIDE THE BOARDS™ PODCASTThe OTB™ Podcast was created with the goal of introducing listeners to people, places and stories and provide a unique behind the scenes perspective of the sport of polo that breaks all the common stereotypes. OUTSIDE THE BOARDS™ PODCASTSEASON #2 | EPISODE #6: Hope ArellanoRECORDED: January 21st, 2022On this Episode of Outside The Boards, and after multiple failed attempts due to technical difficulties, I'm thrilled to welcome women's polo rising star, Hope Arellano.  Born in Wellington, Florida, Arellano spends spring and fall each year in Aiken, South Carolina, where her family owns a horse farm. Clearly, riding is an Arellano obsession. Her father is a professional polo player, her mother played while she was pregnant with Hope, and she and her two older brothers started riding at a very young age.  By age six, Hope was swinging a mallet. Despite her youth, Hope was already racking up a slew of accomplishments, including becoming the youngest winner ever at the 2017 U.S. Open Women's Polo Championship at the Houston Polo Club, being named Most Valuable Player at The Women's Tournament at The Villages Polo Club in The Villages, Florida and winning the 12-goal USPA Pete Bostwick Memorial tournament with her two brothers and father. At 18, she now plays in low, medium, and high-goal matches in both mixed and women's tournaments. She also travels all around the country. This is what Hope Arellano's life looks like as one of today's most active female players in American polo. In 2021 Hope would play in the Ylvisaker Cup, play in the World Polo League and the Butler Handicap at Port Mayaca Polo Club. But the biggest highlight would be joining the La I-re-nita team competing in the Women's Argentine Open.Hope is smart, beautiful and a force in women's polo. We will be taking a little trip France and meet up with Olivier Godallier, Co-Founder & President of Game Polo, which is responsible for the creation of the successful Polo Rider Cup, now in its second year at the Chantilly Polo Club, north of Paris Like myself, Olivier has a lengthy background in popular sports before falling into the sport of polo. Olivier's career in sports began with the well-known Advertising agency, Publicis, and later with one of sports management and marketing's original and iconic agency, ProServe. He would later go on to find GAME Polo, a French sports marketing agency focused on event organization, marketing & sponsorship, licensing & merchandising, TV & digital content distribution, and hospitality within the sport of kings. In 2021, Game Polo would host the first edition of the Polo Rider Cup. The competition is for teams between 10 and 12 goals, with prestigious clubs from around the world. In 2021 the tournament hosted eight clubs from countries like England, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Russia, Spain, Austria and the United States. The plan is to welcome 16 clubs to partake in the tournament, which will switch locations every two years. The idea was born out of an observation that there was no international competition between polo clubs that existed. Game Polo wanted to put one together in the official context, with the support of the FIP and other Associations.  The 2022 Tournament will be held from June 8th to the 18th, with eleven teams already committed to the 10 day tournament from the United States, Switzerland, Germany, Argentina, France, Austria and Malaysia.  Olivier is a brilliant sports marketer and business professional who has worked alongside some of sports most respected industry leaders. OUTSIDE THE BOARDS™ PODCASTEPISODE #4: Chris VangelRECORDED: December 11th, 2020The Outside The Boards™ Podcast is excited to release Episode #5 of Season One of its newly created Podcast presented by Global Polo TV. My guest on this Episode of Outside The Boards, is my very close friend and Chicagoland polo player, Mr. Chris Vangel.  Chris was introduced to polo as a teenager and grew up playing alongside Adam Butler, Michael Butler's ( son of Oak Brook Polo Club founder, Paul Butler) son and respected polo professional Horacio Onetto.I invited Chris to my guest, because of one primary reason. He is the polar opposite of what the outside world might perceive a polo player to be. This is what I love about him as he breaks all the common stereotypes associated with polo.At first glance, you would think Chris was a former blacks opps officer in the Marines or one of Tony Sapranos underbosses. You don't want to mess with him. But don't let the scruffy, cigar wielding, crush you with my hand look fool you. Chris represents the social side of polo that attracts so many people into the sport. The friendly and good hearted people that play the game. Chris is a talented amateur player, successful businessman, and is a patron in Chicago Polo's 8 and 12 goal leagues. He is one of my dear friends in polo and I'm thrilled to have you all get to know him. He is the light of the party, gifted player and just a good person. You will want to be inviting him to your club.WELCOME TO OUTSIDE THE BOARDS™ PODCASTThe OTB™ Podcast was created with the goal of introducing listeners to people, places and stories and provide a unique behind the scenes perspective of the sport of polo that breaks all the common stereotypes.
