Sybrina Fulton is the mother of slain teen Trayvon Martin, and Jasiri X is the co-founder of anti-violence artist collective 1Hood Media, but both are so much more than those descriptors suggest.   “He was my youngest boy,” says Sybrina of her son Trayvon, the unarmed 17-year-old who was followed and shot to death in 2012 by a neighborhood watch coordinator for “looking suspicious” in a Sanford, Fla., gated community. “He loved aviation, Skittles, babies and his family. He was a regular kid.”   Recording artist-activist Jasiri X, who also is a father, remembers the moment he first heard about Trayvon’s death. “I was used to police killing us, but at that moment it felt like anyone could kill us and get away with it,” he says. “It felt like open season on black men and boys.”   In this episode of “We Can Be,” Sybrina shares her moving journey from grieving mother to author (“Rest in Power: The Enduring Life of Trayvon Martin”) and activist (The Trayvon Martin Foundation).   Her story has helped to inspire millions – including Jasiri X who wrote a song titled “Trayvon” - to speak up against gun violence, “stand your ground” laws and racial profiling.   In the wake of the killing of unarmed Pittsburgh teenager Antwon Rose II, voices like those of Sybrina Fulton and Jasiri X are more vital than ever.   “I speak for and from Trayvon Martin,” says Sybrina of her son, whose death sparked the Black Lives Matter movement. “I stand for the other mothers who cannot.”   “We Can Be” is hosted by Heinz Endowments President Grant Oliphant, and produced by the Endowments and Treehouse Media. With over 2.5 million weekly “Very Smart Brothas” readers, a GQ column and new Harper Collins book “What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Blacker,” Damon Young is artfully illuminating life as a black man in 21st century America.   “So many of the narratives about being black in America are ensconced in deep trauma,” says Damon. “And yes, we do deal with racism, oppression and structural inequality, but I hope my writing shares that there is also beauty, love, passion, and humanity in that experience, too.”   Damon shares his take on the role white privilege played in the killing of 17 year-old unarmed black teenager Antwon Rose II by a white former East Pittsburgh police officer, the conversation about homophobia he hopes is sparked by a chapter in his new book, and how systemic inequality has led him to experience the “hyper-cognizance” of his blackness.   Damon talks with host Grant Oliphant about why Hannah Gadsby’s Netflix comedy special “Nanette” is definitely in his “love” column, and whether having an infant son really means that he can “finally start respecting men as people.”   His writing is a seamless weaving of intelligence, humor and heartfelt empathy, not unlike the man himself. Experience the full spectrum of writer Damon Young on this episode of “We Can Be.”     “We Can Be” is hosted by The Heinz Endowments President Grant Oliphant, and produced by the Endowments and Treehouse Media. After taking the weekend to pore over the Mueller report, US Attorney General William Barr has sent Congress his four-page summary of the "principal conclusions" from the special counsel's 675-day investigation into the Trump campaign's alleged ties to Russia. The bottom line according to AG Barr: "The investigation did not establish that members of the Trump campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in its election interference activities."On the question of obstruction of justice, Barr writes that while Mueller's report "does not conclude that the President committed a crime, it also does not exonerate him."Barr says he and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein concluded that the evidence "is not sufficient to establish that the President committed an obstruction-of-justice offense," noting that the government would have to prove such a case "beyond a reasonable doubt." Does this tell us anything new? Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) now says the Senate Judiciary Committee, which he chairs, will explore the "other side" in the Russia probe. His committee will investigate the actions of the Justice Department in the Russia investigation, including the FBI's use of a dossier compiled by British spy Christopher Steele. How can the Democrats say no if Graham wants to open his own investigation? What does this do to the relationship between the US and Russia? Also, President Donald Trump abruptly reversed decades of US policy Thursday by endorsing permanent Israeli control of the disputed Golan Heights, saying on Twitter that the area seized from Syria in the 1967 Six-Day War is “of critical strategic and security importance” to Israel. The position is a political boon to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as the two leaders met Monday at the White House, where Trump signed an official proclamation recognizing Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights, a disputed territory the United Nations considers "occupied" by Israel.Lastly, the city of Pittsburgh is continuing to see demonstrations following a not guilty verdict in the trial of a former police officer charged in the June 2018 death of an unarmed black teen. A jury found Michael Rosfeld not guilty Friday in the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Antwon Rose II. Rose was shot three times while running away during a traffic stop last June. Over the weekend, several protests occurred across the area and around the state. More demonstrations are expected this week, including a planned student walkout today at Pittsburgh Public Schools. There was video showing the deadly encounter. Why was Rosfeld not convicted? Kavanaugh Vote Advances; Cop Convicted of Murdering Black Teen; Friday Wrap Up

The Critical Hour

Judge Brett Kavanaugh made it out of committee this morning in his quest for the Supreme Court. The Senate voted narrowly to cut off debate on his nomination and move to the floor for a final vote as early as tomorrow. The 51-49 vote is the next-to-last step in the most tumultuous Supreme Court confirmation process in decades. Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) initially said her vote to move the confirmation forward did not signal how she would vote in the end, but she announced later on Friday that she will vote to support him on the floor. I think after the past few weeks of this hearing process, it looks like Kavanaugh will become the next Supreme Court justice. What does all of this mean? Jason Van Dyke was found guilty of second-degree murder and 16 counts of aggravated battery with a firearm, carrying a mandatory minimum of six years in prison, and had his bail revoked. For some insight into this verdict we turn Fred G. Rabner, the attorney for the family of Antwon Rose II, the unarmed 17-year-old who was shot and killed in June by Michael Rosfeld, an East Pittsburgh police officer. It's Friday! Time for the weekly panel discussion. There are lots of things to talk about. Mike Pence declares Trump's fight with China just got personal. Claiming that Beijing wants to get Trump out of office, Vice President Pence outlines a China policy that threatens to dramatically increase tensions. “A new consensus on China is rising across America,” is what he told an audience in Washington, warning Beijing in fighting terms that “this president will not back down.” The wide-ranging speech employed many criticisms long levied against Beijing, including backpedaling on reforms and representing a malign influence in global politics. But Pence also denounced the Chinese government on a new front that related to President Trump himself: election meddling. So far, the allegation appears to be based primarily on the fact that retaliatory tariffs placed on US goods by China have overwhelmingly targeted counties that voted for Trump in the 2016 presidential election. The notion that Beijing is specifically targeting Trump, which served as an exclamation point at the end of Pence's laundry list of grievances, raises the question of whether the US president will abandon his insistence on maintaining the public image of a warm relationship with his Chinese counterpart, President Xi Jinping. Job growth slumped in September, but the unemployment rate hit the lowest level since 1969. Job creation for September fell to its lowest level in a year, though the unemployment rate dropped to a point not seen in nearly 50 years, according to Labor Department figures released Friday. Non-farm payrolls rose just 134,000, well below Refinitiv estimates of 185,000 and the worst performance since last September, when a labor strike weighed on the numbers. The unemployment rate fell two-tenths of a percentage point to 3.7 percent, the lowest level since December 1969 and one-tenth of a percentage point below expectations. A separate measure of unemployment that includes discouraged workers and those holding jobs part-time for economic reasons — sometimes called the "real unemployment rate" — edged higher to 7.5 percent. Unemployment among black Americans declined three-tenths of a point to 6 percent, slightly above its record low of 5.9 percent achieved in May. The increase in pay over the past 12 months slowed to 2.8 percent from 2.9 percent, but it's widely expected to top 3 percent soon because of the growing competition for a shrinking pool of available workers. Most economists believe it's just a matter of time before hiring slows sharply, and they wonder if September is a hint of what's to come. The economy is starting to run out of workers, they contend. We've got all those topics and more!GUESTS:Leslie Proll — Civil rights lawyer, advisor to the NAACP on judicial nominations, former NAACP LDF Policy Director and former Alabama director of the US Department of TransportationAttorney Fred Rabner, Esq. — Attorney in Antwon Rose II case.Earl Ofari Hutchinson — Political analyst; author of Why Black Lives Do Matter; the host of the weekly Hutchinson Report on KPFK 90.7 FM Los Angeles and the Pacifica Network.Caleb Maupin — Journalist and political analyst who focuses his coverage on US foreign policy and the global system of monopoly capitalism and imperialism. The National Football League Players Association filed a grievance challenging the NFL's newly imposed national anthem policy. Also, it's been 63 years and the federal government has quietly revived its investigation into the murder of Emmett Till, the 14-year-old African-American boy. On this Episode of The Critical Hour with Dr. Wilmer Leon, The NFL Players Association's complaint is “on behalf of all players challenging the NFL's recently imposed anthem policy,” NFLPA said in a statement. “The union's claim is that this new policy, imposed by the NFL's governing body without consultation with the NFLPA, is inconsistent with the collective bargaining agreement.” The policy, approved by team owners in May, requires athletes on the field to stand during the playing of “The Star-Spangled Banner.“ Should a player or other team member refuse, or otherwise disrespect the song, the offending party will be subject to a fine. The policy was put in place as a compromise move after President Donald Trump frequently railed against players for kneeling during the anthem in protest of racial and other injustice in America, particularly police brutality. In our last segment, the federal government has quietly revived its investigation into the murder of Emmett Till, the 14-year-old African-American boy whose abduction and killing remains, almost 63 years later, among the starkest and most searing examples of racial violence in the South. He was murdered August 28, 1955 in Money, MS, four years before I was born. But his death was so horrific and it's impact so pervasive that it's one of those events that has been seared into my memory as if I was alive when it happened. Is there any correlation between his death and the murder of Antwon Rose II in Pittsburgh and the, as Gil Scott Heron would say, the endless list that won't be missed when at last America is purged.GUESTS:Mason Ashe - currently on the Adjunct Faculty at Howard University School of Law and the Wharton Business School of the University of Pennsylvania where I teach Sports Law. Some 179 million residents or roughly 56 percent of the U.S. population, lived in these 26 states In contrast, non-Hispanic white (hereafter referred to as white) deaths exceeded births in just four states in 2004 and seventeen as recently as 2014.When births fail to keep pace with deaths, a region is said to have a "natural decrease" in population, which can only be offset by migration gains. The growing incidence of this white natural decrease has important implications for the nation's demographic future and I suggest it's political future as well.Report of the Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights on his mission to the United States of America.Reading from the report, Philip Alston The Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights visited the United States from 1 to 15 December 2017. There are approximately 326M people in the US.Nikki Haley Responds to Senator Sanders about the UN ReportSenator Bernie Sanders sent US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, a letter asking to meet with her to discuss it, to which she replied that, it is “patently ridiculous” for the U.N. to even examine poverty in America; our government officials engage in poverty issues every day.” She went on to say that rather than using his voice to shine a light on vulnerable American populations, he wasted the UN's time and resources deflecting attention away from the worlds worst abusers of human rights, and, focused instead on the wealthiest and freest country in the world.
