The People of the Columbia River

In 1996, some of the oldest human remains ever found in North America were discovered along the banks of the Columbia River, ultimately illuminating Indigenous presence in the region since time immemorial.   Long a crucial source of sustenance, culture and trade, the Pacific Northwest's largest river has continued to be a vital part of human civilization, whether through its salmon or its many hydroelectric dams.  Cascade PBS's resident historian Knute Berger dug into this history in a recent episode of the Mossback's Northwest video series, but there is much more left to discuss.  In this episode of Mossback, Berger joins co-host Stephen Hegg to revisit the story of The Ancient One and the decades-long controversy that ensued over his bones. They explore the significance of the river to its people over the centuries; the impact of the arrival of European and American traders and settlers; and the impact of the creation of so many dams, especially the one that submerged Celilo Falls.   Special note: The voice of Lana Jack in this episode comes courtesy of Creative FRONTLINE. The clip is from “Celilo Falls and the Culture of Death” with Lana Jack, produced by Tracker Ginamarie Rangel Quinones (Apache Investigative Reporter) and filmmaker Robert Lundahl. The full episode initially aired on Creative FRONTLINE, KPFK Los Angeles 90.7, Pacifica Network.  For more on all things Mossback, visit CascadePBS.org. In 1960, WBAI Radio in New York City hosted a historic debate between two prominent civil rights leaders, Malcolm X and Bayard Rustin. The discussion centered around the best approach to achieving racial equality and justice in America. Malcolm X, a fiery advocate for black nationalism and self-defense, argued for a more radical and militant approach to combating systemic racism. On the other hand, Bayard Rustin, and follower of Martin Luther King Jr and a key organizer of the March on Washington, advocated for nonviolent resistance and integration as the most effective means of achieving civil rights. The debate highlighted the ideological divisions within the civil rights movement and sparked important conversations about the most effective strategies for achieving racial equality in America. The debate is moderated by John Donald of the Pacifica Network. More at Krobcollection.com

Rage Against the War Machine rally this Sunday, February 19, in Washington DC at 1230 PM at the Lincoln Memorial. https://rageagainstwar.com/ First, Max Blumenthal, comedian Jimmy Dore, and Aaron Mate discuss the controversies surrounding Rage Against the War Machine and to respond to the sectarian elements manufacturing them. This February 19, people from around the country from a range of political backgrounds will gather at 1230 PM at Washington DCs Lincoln Memorial to rage against the war machine. There, they will hear from speakers including Tulsi Gabbard, Jimmy Dore, Dennis Kucinich, Jill Stein, Roger Waters, Anya Parampil, Ron Paul, Judge Andrew Napolitano and Max Blumenthal, among many others. Because the rally is co-sponsored by the left-wing Peoples Party and the Libertarian Party, certain leftist elements which have traditionally asserted leadership over the antiwar movement and left it in a pathetic, moribund state, have attacked Rage Against the War Machine and attempted to depress turnout. Medea Benjamin, one of the most prominent antiwar personalities in the US, was forced to withdraw from speaking at the rally after staffers at her Code Pink organization declared opposition to one speakers views on gender ideology. Thats right, if every single speaker at an antiwar rally does not hold the correct view on each of the latest boutique social issues, then the rally is invalid. Does that sound like a workable formula for an effective antiwar movement in the United States? In the second half, Max Blumenthal and Aaron Mate discuss the deadly impact of the US governments so-called Caesar Sanctions Act on average Syrians. An earthquake has killed tens of thousands in Turkey and Syria, and as Americans, we are unable to send aid to most Syrians. Why? Because of the sadistic US sanctions imposed on the country amidst a multi-billion dollar campaign to flood the country with weapons and jihadist death squads in a ruthless bid for regime change. Americans were in “possession of” and were building upon, the “precious blessings” of the traditions, principles, values, rights, and the Rule of Law that no other people on earth enjoyed until the Republican Party abandoned: Truth, Science, Women (Choice/ERA), LGBTQ+ citizens, Black citizens, Voting, Healthcare, Unions, Public Education, Child Care, Separation of Church and State, Higher Education, Minimum Wage, Equality, Environmental Issues, Covid Masks/Vaccine, Gun Safety, Fair Elections, the Climate Crisis, and even Democracy itself. How do we do American politics right when over the past four+ decades, Republicans and some Democrats have subjected the American people to massive amounts of stress and levels of strain that could make our society crack? Interview Guest: Egberto Willies, producer and host of “Politics Done Right,” is an activist, author, political blogger, radio show host, business owner, software developer, web designer, and mechanical engineer in Kingwood, TX. Egberto Willies is an ardent Liberal who believes tolerance is essential. His favorite phrase is “political involvement should be a requirement for citizenship.” Egberto also believes that we must get away from the current policies that reward those who simply move money and capital to become wealthy but who produce nothing tangible for our society. If a change in these policies does not occur, America will be no different from other oligarchic societies where a few accumulate massive wealth while the rest are mathematically left out because it is impossible to catch up. Egberto discusses these issues daily on his Pacifica Network radio show, “Politics Done Right” and at his blog www.egbertowillies.com.

Tink Tinker and Dina Gilio-Whitaker engaged in dialogue moderated by Suzanne Benally exploring the concept of rights for the American Indian people. Juxtaposed to western frameworks that focus on individual rights, for American Indians the idea of rights has often been used against the collective interests of tribal nations because the philosophical foundations at the core of Indigenous and western worldviews are dramatically different. About the Presenters Dina Gilio-Whitaker (Colville Confederated Tribes) is a lecturer of American Indian Studies at California State University San Marcos, and an independent educator in American Indian environmental policy and other issues. At CSUSM she teaches courses on environmentalism and American Indians, traditional ecological knowledge, religion and philosophy, Native women's activism, American Indians and sports, and decolonization. Completely bananas show this week! We had so many new tunes lined up to play from One Mindz, Viewer, Detoxic, R1C0, Hospital Records new releases, Conrad Subs on Liondub Street Series, Sam Binga and Rider Shafique, and more. But, just as the groove started getting strong, a huge thunderstorm blew into town and flooded the studios where we record each Saturday night. Suddenly, as I mopped up the floor with one hand, I pulled out a minor theme centered around Rain. Indigenous women and girls go missing or are murdered at startling rates that are not yet fully known. While there are many movements working hard to bring more attention to this, there is little legislation in the nation and minimal police support. In addition, the mainstream media has been eerily silent. Listen to a special report, by Pacifica Network producers Sara Blanco and Morning Star Gali, titled, "Invisible Epidemic: Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) in California & Beyond". This is part 1 in a series produced for "La Onda Bajita" from 94.1 FM KPFA Berkeley. To find out about the upcoming series email saritamultimedia@gmail.com. PRODUCERS:Sara Blanco, is Producer & Reporter for "La Onda Bajita":Sara identifies as a Chicana and Mexicana. She is an activist seeking justice for Chicana(o)s, Mexicana(o)s, and Indigenous peoples, Indigenous descendants and Latinx cultures across the globe. You can listen to her as part of "La Onda Bajita" which is a long running radio collective. Her shows air the first Friday of each month 9-10pm PST on 94.1 FM Berkeley or around the world live on www.kpfa.org. Sara Blanco works with Miguel Gavilan Molina, who has been the Executive Producer for "La Onda Bajita" for four decades and has always encouraged the presence, voice and strength of women in media. Sara's radio shows air a variety of topics including MMIWG, Domestic Worker & Farm Laborer struggles, plus, she enjoys interviewing people who make the world a better place. She also is a producer for La Onda Bajita's "420 Report" where she demystifies cannabis related news & interviews early pioneers and current leaders in the industry. Sara started within the collective after graduating from KPFA Radio's "First Voice Apprenticeship Program". For more information about the Apprenticeship program which actively seeks to bring women, people of color, and underrepresented communities into media, visit www.kpfaapprentice.org and listen to the apprentice-led show "Full Circle" Fridays 7p to 8p PST.Morning Start Gali, Pit River Tribe Member, is an advocate for the issue of MMIW in the greater Bay Area and she is a Board of Member of The Sovereign Bodies Institute: https://www.sovereign-bodies.org. She also leads large-scale actions and assists with organizing Native cultural, spiritual, academic, and political gatherings. She is also the lead organizer, since 2006, for the now prominent "Thanks-taking" sunrise ceremony at Alcatraz, an annual commemoration of the 1969-1971 occupation by Native activists of the island within the ancestral territories of the Ohlone people. It is coordinated with the International Indian Treaty Council and is attended by 5,000 people each year. Morning Star & Sara Blanco plan to continue working on a series about MMIW. People Interviewed in the program:Bernadette Smith, Native Spiritual Singer and Dancer. Bernadette is a member of "Earth First Environmental Group" that works to protect Tan Oak trees and the acorn collection sites. Bernadette is a member of the "MMIW Coalition of California". Her sister Nicole Smith was murdered on their reservation and the case hasn't been solved. Bernadette tells us about this in this first part in the series. Bernadette will be featured again in another part of the series to tell us more about her ideas for solutions to these terrible crimes and how we can get involved. Karina Banuelos: At the time of producing Part 1 in the series, Karina was the Database Specialist for the "Sovereign Bodies Institute" (SBI) and was in charge of updating this database with information about women and girls south of the so called "border". Although no longer affiliated with SBI, we keep her interview in Part 1 as it provides valuable insight about why these atrocities occur and how we can move forward to stop them from happening.
