As I became a better developer over the years, I got worse at marketing. My brain can't seem to do both of those things at once. I put a post out on Twitter, and got some great responses that helped me a lot. Here's the thread: https://twitter.com/scottbolinger/status/1328750436031971328 In this episode I talk about the responses that I liked the most, and what I am doing with AppPresser marketing as a result. In this episode, Scott and I dig into his world as an indie developer within the WordPress landscape.Scott has long used JavaScript as a core technology with AppPresser. I think he's on the forefront of thinking about various technologies that are newer to WordPress but out in full force in other worlds.Scott is really into JAMstack (JavaScript, APIs, Markup). He's working on Static Fuse now, which helps connect WordPress to Gatsby -- which has a lot of attention in the web space right now.We also dig pretty deeply into the challenges and opportunities facing independent developers, and the interest levels in WordPress from the indie dev crowd. It's an interesting episode and I learned a lot from Scott. You set out, sometimes on your own, to face the great unknown that is the market. Who's my customer? How do I reach them? How much do I charge? Let's say you wanted to launch a contact form plugin. You would look at Gravity Forms or Ninja Forms and see what they were up to. Your team would probably start by saying, “How can we make this easier?” or “Can we make a better UI?” Then you're off to the races. You've got a foundation and a blueprint to work with. Well, what if you don't have a competitor to base your version 1 off of? What if no one actually wants to buy your new idea? The greater the risk the greater the return. As for AppPresser, they have no model to work from. There's no standard for building iOS or Android apps based on WordPress because it doesn't exist — until now. In this episode, we're going to look at how Scott hooked up with WebDevStudios and why it's important to work with other teams on projects this size. A feat that I tip my cap to, as most folks charged with a startup idea want to control it all. I hope you enjoy this special episode with the team from AppPresser! Launching a product that has no competition If it hasn't been created yet – ask yourself why. Too challenging? Too costly? No market? However, if your gut is telling you to build this, here's a few methods that I recommend to test your market. I've talked about it in this post, but your first step should be to start growing an audience today. Take your idea and chisel it down to the most consumable pill to swallow. If you've got plans for every feature and every platform, pick the most popular and roll with that. Start the elevator pitch to friends, family and your Twitter following. If no one gets it or isn't too convinced, throw it back in the oven. You don't want to launch half baked. If you can't put it into words, try using a presentation or video demonstration using Screenflow. Slideshows with big simlpe text and keywords work great. If you can't dive into code right away, simulate your clicks or product screens using animation. This is another great way to demonstrate a walk through without having to actually code something. It's all about the pitch and presentation when you don't have a similar competitor to tackle. “We're just like Easy Digital Downloads, but easier!” Imagine that, but you get my point. On this episode of WPwatercooler we will be discussing mobile solutions for WordPress, themes, apps and ways to integrate mobile with your project.Mobile solutionsStart by asking yourself what the purpose is? Define what the goal is, who your audience is, how will they be experiencing your website? If you’re serious about making your site responsive and mobile, start with Mobile First Design by A Book Apart It’ll get you thinking about how people will be interacting with your data and what they’ll likely be doing when accessing your content.Stop thinking about mobile versions of your site as an afterthought. Think about mobile first before you begin the design process.Know that they way people use a mobile site is different than how they do on a desktop. Just adding a responsive theme to your site is not going to cut it.Make sure your mobile site loads fast. No one will wait for your site to load when they’re on the go.The term “Mobile” means more than iPhone and Android. It means devices that sometimes don’t have color screen, javascript or css, gaming consoles and so on.25% of your audience will access your site ONLY from a mobile device and that percentage is rising.Track your stats so you know who’s trying to access your site and how. Gather data through analytics. One way to implement this is to make your desktop site blazingly fast. You can use picturefill and make sure the content is the main thin you’re seeing, not images and sidebars. On mobile you simply want to see content.Simple speed tricksHaving a caching plugin in place like WP Super Cache or W3 Total Cache or something better if you have something like WP Engine.Adding a CDN such as Max CDN so images load as fast as possible.Aside from the web browser itself what are other ways for taking content from a WordPress interface and display it on a mobile environment?Appmaker.comredfoundry.com Both of those will take an rss feed or customized type of feed, and deliver them to an app that you can now use to deliver to an app store. For more advanced devsTitanium from AppceleratorPhonegap – These both take some programming know how. Some people will take a Json feed or an xml feed from your WordPress site and use something like phonegap which allows you to make a native app with HTML and Javascript and get your content into it that way. The problem with that is you still have to build a static site and all you’re doing is taking a feed from WordPress.AppPresser is a way to use all of the native WordPress plugins and themes and use that as a native app and you’re able to use things like the device camera, and the contacts etc… through WordPress using the skills you already have. You won’t have to get your hands dirty with native code.
