The joys and challenges of ministry in a transient place are different from those in a traditional church context. Transient ministry requires detailed intentionality and remembering that God has entrusted people to you for only a short period of time. Brittany Brown understands transient ministry well, having walked alongside her military husband for nearly twenty years. She joins me today to provide insight into transient ministry and how embracing the movement has aided her in leading others towards Christ. EPISODE GUIDE 1. Embrace the unique challenges and movement of transient church plant ministry. 2. There are many joys in a transient church. BEST QUOTES “I think a challenge for us is raising up women to minister to the other women. At any given time, our church could be filled with 75% women and tons of little kids. Seeing that their needs are filled well can be a challenge. We have to walk alongside the elders to help minister to them.” — Brittany Brown “Our vision is to embrace the transient movement and see it as an opportunity of taking the gospel, reaching them with it, discipling them, and training up leaders. Then we send them out, holding them open-handed to go wherever they’re gonna go in the world and bring in that new batch of people to do the same thing again.” — Brittany Brown “There are hardships, but there are joys as well. As I watch young families move away and see them plug into a new church, I see them being faithful or growing in their love for the Lord, I find that really joyful. It’s a good reminder for me that I don’t need to be everything to everybody, God is gonna move them.” — Brittany Brown LINKS FROM THE SHOW The Pastor’s Wife and Social Media Podcast Episode Messy Beautiful Friendship The Gospel Comes with a House Key Head over to www.ministrywivespodcast.com to check out the great content already on the site! The Effect of Gravitational Lensing on Fast Transient Event Rates by Mawson W. Sammons et al. on Tuesday 18 October Fast cosmological transients such as fast radio bursts (FRBs) and gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) represent a class of sources more compact than any other cosmological object. As such they are sensitive to significant magnification via gravitational lensing from a class of lenses which are not well-constrained by observations today. Low-mass primordial black holes are one such candidate which may constitute a significant fraction of the Universe's dark matter. Current observations only constrain their density in the nearby Universe, giving fast transients from cosmological distances the potential to form complementary constraints. Motivated by this, we calculate the effect that gravitational lensing from a cosmological distribution of compact objects would have on the observed rates of FRBs and GRBs. For static lensing geometries, we rule out the prospect that all FRBs are gravitationally lensed for a range of lens masses and show that lens masses greater than $10^{-5}M_odot$ can be constrained with 8000 un-localised high fluence FRBs at 1.4GHz, as might be detected by the next generation of FRB-finding telescopes. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.09487v1

A 31 3 day Transient Quasiperiodic Oscillation in Gamma-ray Emission from Blazar S5 0716+714 by Junping Chen et al. on Monday 17 October We systematically search for quasiperiodic oscillatory (QPO) signals on the month timescale among the 1525 sources given in the Fermi Large Area Telescope Light Curve Repository. We find a transient QPO of 31.3$pm$1.8 days in the gamma-ray band light curve of the TeV blazar S5 0716+714, which has seven cycles (MJD 55918-56137) for the first time by weighted wavelet Z-transform and Lomb-Scargle periodogram methods. Monte Carlo simulations based on the power spectral density and probability distribution function were used to evaluate the confidence level of the QPO, and the result is $sim 4.1sigma$. Seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average modeling of the light curve revealed it is a significant physical QPO. The physical models to explain the sporadic QPO of the month-timescale QPOs in blazar were discussed. Our studies indicate that the helical jet model and blob move helically in a curved jet model to properly explain this kind of transient QPO. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.07002v2

A Transient `Changing-Look' AGN Resolved on Month Timescales From First-Year SDSS-V Data by Grisha Zeltyn et al. on Sunday 16 October We report the discovery of a new `changing-look' active galactic nucleus (CLAGN) event, in the quasar SDSS J162829.17+432948.5 at z=0.2603, identified through repeat spectroscopy from the fifth Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-V). Optical photometry taken during 2020-2021 shows a dramatic dimming of ${Delta}$g${approx}$1 mag, followed by a rapid recovery on a timescale of several months, with the ${lesssim}$2 month period of rebrightening captured in new SDSS-V and Las Cumbres Observatory spectroscopy. This is one of the fastest CLAGN transitions observed to date. Archival observations suggest that the object experienced a much more gradual dimming over the period of 2011-2013. Our spectroscopy shows that the photometric changes were accompanied by dramatic variations in the quasar-like continuum and broad-line emission. The excellent agreement between the pre- and post-dip photometric and spectroscopic appearances of the source, as well as the fact that the dimmest spectra can be reproduced by applying a single extinction law to the brighter spectral states, favor a variable line-of-sight obscuration as the driver of the observed transitions. Such an interpretation faces several theoretical challenges, and thus an alternative accretion-driven scenario cannot be excluded. The recent events observed in this quasar highlight the importance of spectroscopic monitoring of large AGN samples on weeks-to-months timescales, which the SDSS-V is designed to achieve. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.07258v1

A real-time transient detector and the Living Swift-XRT Point Source catalogue by P. A. Evans et al. on Sunday 16 October We present the Living Swift-XRT Point Source catalogue (LSXPS) and real-time transient detector. This system allows us for the first time to carry out low-latency searches for new transient X-ray events fainter than those available to the current generation of wide-field imagers, and report their detection in near real-time. Previously, such events could only be found in delayed searches, e.g. of archival data; our low-latency analysis now enables rapid and ongoing follow up of these events, enabling the probing of timescales previously inaccessible. The LSXPS is, uniquely among X-ray catalogues, updated in near real-time, making this the first up-to-date record of the point sources detected by a sensitive X-ray telescope: the Swift-X-ray Telescope (XRT). The associated upper limit calculator likewise makes use of all available data allowing contemporary upper limits to be rapidly produced on-demand. These facilities, which enable the low-latency transient system are also fully available to the community, providing a powerful resource for time-domain and multi-messenger astrophysics. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2208.14478v2

The population properties of spinning black holes using Gravitational-wave Transient Catalog 3

The population properties of spinning black holes using Gravitational-wave Transient Catalog 3 by Hui Tong et al. on Thursday 13 October Binary black holes formed via different pathways are predicted to have distinct spin properties. Measuring these properties with gravitational waves provides an opportunity to unveil the origins of binary black holes. Recent work draws conflicting conclusions regarding the spin distribution observed by LIGO--Virgo--KAGRA (LVK). Some analyses suggest that a fraction of the observed black-hole spin vectors are significantly misaligned (by $>90^circ$) relative to the orbital angular momentum. This has been interpreted to mean that some binaries in the LVK dataset are assembled dynamically in dense stellar environments. Other analyses find support for a sub-population of binaries with negligible spin and no evidence for significantly misaligned spin -- a result consistent with the field formation scenario. In this work, we study the spin properties of binary black holes in the third LVK gravitational-wave transient catalog. We find that there is insufficient data to resolve the existence of a sub-population of binaries with negligible black-hole spin (the presence of this sub-population is supported by a modest Bayes factor of 1.7). We find modest support for the existence of mergers with extreme spin tilt angles $> 90^circ$ (the presence of extreme-tilt binaries is favored by a Bayes factor of 10.1). Only one thing is clear: at least some of the LVK binaries formed in the field. At most $89%$ of binaries are assembled dynamically (99% credibility), though, the true branching fraction could be much lower, even negligible. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.02206v2

Probing the low-mass end of core-collapse supernovae using a sample of strongly-stripped Calcium-rich Type IIb Supernovae from the Zwicky Transient Facility by Kaustav K. Das et al. on Wednesday 12 October The fate of stars in the zero-age main-sequence (ZAMS) range $approx 8-12$ Msun is unclear. They could evolve to form white dwarfs or explode as electron-capture supernovae (SNe) or iron core-collapse SNe (CCSNe). Even though the initial mass function indicates that this mass range should account for over 40% of all CCSNe progenitors, few have been observationally confirmed, likely owing to the faintness and rapid evolution of these transients. In this paper, we present a sample of nine Ca-rich/O-poor Type IIb SNe detected by the Zwicky Transient Facility with progenitors likely in this mass range. We perform a holistic analysis of the spectroscopic and photometric properties of the sample. These sources have a flux ratio of [Ca II] $lambda lambda$7291, 7324 to [O I] $lambda lambda$6300, 6364 of $gtrsim$ 2 in their nebular spectra. Comparing the measured [O I] luminosity ($lesssim 10^{39} mathrm{erg s^{-1}}$) and derived oxygen mass ($lesssim 0.1$ Msun) with theoretical models, we infer that the progenitor ZAMS mass for these explosions is less than 12 Msun. These correspond to He-stars with core masses less than around 3 Msun. We find that the ejecta properties (Mej $lesssim 1$ Msun) are also consistent with those expected for such low mass He-stars. The low ejecta mass of these sources indicates a class of strongly-stripped SNe that is a transition between the regular stripped-envelope SNe and ultra-stripped SNe. The progenitor could be stripped by a main sequence companion and result in the formation of a neutron star $-$ main sequence binary. Such binaries have been suggested to be progenitors of neutron star $-$ white dwarf systems that could merge within a Hubble time, and be detectable with LISA. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.05729v1

A possible 250-second X-ray quasi-periodicity in the fast blue optical transient AT2018cow

A possible 250-second X-ray quasi-periodicity in the fast blue optical transient AT2018cow by Wenjie Zhang et al. on Monday 10 October The fast blue optical transients (FBOTs) are a new population of extragalactic transients of unclear physical origin. A variety of mechanisms have been proposed including failed supernova explosion, shock interaction with a dense medium, young magnetar, accretion onto a compact object, and stellar tidal disruption event, but none is conclusive. Here we report the discovery of a possible X-ray quasi-periodicity signal with a period of $sim$250 second (at a significance level of 99.76%) in the brightest FBOT AT2018cow through the analysis of XMM-Newton/PN data. The signal is independently detected at the same frequency in the average power density spectrum from data taken from the Swift telescope, with observations covering from 6 to 37 days after the optical discovery, though the significance level is lower (94.26%). This suggests that the QPO frequency may be stable over at least 1.1$times$ 10$^{4}$ cycles. Assuming the $sim$250 second QPO to be a scaled-down analogue of that typically seen in stellar mass black holes, a black hole mass of $sim10^{3}-10^{5}$ solar masses could be inferred. The overall X-ray luminosity evolution could be modeled with the stellar tidal disruption by a black hole of $sim10^4$ solar masses, providing a viable mechanism to produce AT2018cow. Our findings suggest that other bright FBOTs may also harbor intermediate-mass black holes. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.04190v1

Abstract: NMDA receptor autoimmune encephalitis (NMDAR-AE) is characterized by cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-resident anti-NMDA receptor autoantibodies that cause behavioral and neurologic deficits. Although many symptoms are responsive to immunotherapy, for many patients functionally impairing deficits persist. We used patient-derived GluN1 and GluN2A-specific monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) to interrogate the molecular and circuit basis for persistent sensory-motor deficits following NMDAR-AE. During postnatal development, intracortical injection of either mAb disrupted callosal circuit formation with excess callosal projections in primary somatosensory cortex (S1), although the anti-GluN1 antibody provoked the more severe phenotype. S1 circuit disruption during development results in permanent axon morphology alterations and sensory-motor deficits lasting to adulthood. The severity of sensory-motor deficits was correlated with the severity of axon morphology alterations, and these anatomic changes are associated with sensory-motor behavior deficits similar to those in children NMDAR-AE. Our studies provide a molecular, cellular, and circuit basis for persistent neuropsychiatric deficits in NMDAR-AE. Copy rights belong to original authors. Bigg's killer whales are a thriving population we see often in the inland waters of Washington state and British Columbia. In this episode we take a closer look into what we are learning about their fascinating culture and social dynamics. Joining us is return guest, Monika Wieland Shields, co-founder and director of Orca Behavior Institute. We discuss and highlight the differences between the two populations of orcas we see in the Salish Sea, the endangered fish-eating Southern Resident killer whales and the growing population of marine mammal-eating Bigg's killer whales. We discuss the primary cultural difference in their prey and also discuss at length the differences in how they socialize, family structure, vocalizations, and social dynamics.  We also discuss changes in each population's presence in the inland waters over the last decade and how Bigg's killer whales used to have a peak in their occurrence here but are now somewhere in the Salish Sea almost every day, often in multiple groups. We also talk about how their original names, Resident and Transient orcas, are no longer appropriate names. Fish-eating and mammal-eating is the ultimate description. We talk about how we are now learning the culture of Bigg's killer whales because of the increased frequency of sightings. We have far less history spending time with Biggs than the 40 years of observation of fish-eating orcas.  We discuss the interesting aspects of what we are learning. We also get into threats to the Bigg's population, specifically proposed pinniped culls. We talk about how regional wide culls could impede the Bigg's population, whereas targeted culls in very local areas may be less harmful.  We conclude this episode discussing recent sightings with the T37As, T2Cs, and T69s. Over the course of our 200-or-so-year history as a denomination, we Unitarian Universalists have undergone considerable change. That doesn't mean that transformation has always–or ever–been easy. In the coming year, we are faced with the opportunity to be a part of the sacred task of renewing our faith as both a community and a movement. What can the transcendentalist revolutionaries of early American Unitarianism teach us about what it means to be a living faith tradition today? What is it that truly holds us together in sacred covenant now and into the future, and what are the outward manifestations of our shared faith that are ready to be transformed for a new age? After years of lock down, people naturally want to go wherever they want for a vacation. The next best thing would be somewhere close by, within a couple of hours from home. This is why investing in RV Parks appeals to many. In the fifth episode of the Passive Investing Show, J and Ashley are joined by Don Spafford to discuss what investors should expect in making RV Park investments. They talk about rentals, additional income opportunities, overall expenses, risks to face, and multiple other aspects of maintaining and improving an RV Park. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: The transient population that stays in RV Parks can bring in higher revenue through a stream of short-term revenue. The majority of expenses come from utilities, system upgrades, and insurance for land and personal injury. There is little risk in investing in RV Parks as they can always be converted to long-term stays. It is essential for young investors to know about house hacking. Episode Highlights: [07:41] Why Invest in RV Parks vs. Other Real Estate Don Spafford narrows his reasons for liking RV Parks down to two things: first is that there is less competition so it's easier to keep their purchase prices to a reasonable level and ultimately produce income for the return. The second reason is that RV Parks are something unique and different that other people are not really investing in so they stand out. [12:47] Adding Value to RV Park Investments Maintaining a strong online presence and improving your website so more people can find it is crucial. This includes online reservations and dynamic pricing — that alone generally adds at least another 5% to revenue. Another way to add value to RV Park investments is by creating additional RV storage with more pad sites. It is important to add amenities like WiFi in case tenants want to work remotely. [17:42] Source of Income While the bulk of your income will come from rentals, RV Park investments can offer other additional income streams as well. Transient renters usually bring in the highest revenue. Having people coming in every couple of days will generate more income than having tenants for a month at a time. [23:45] Compressing Cap Rates When asked whether cap rates were compressing because of COVID, Don shared that while cap rates are indeed compressing, it is not necessarily because of the pandemic. Rather, it's due to more people entering the RV Park investment space. Notable Quotes from the Episode: [39:13] “ [To] my kids and everyone that's looking to start in real estate when they're young, I say, ‘Hey, you've got to house hack'. That's the very best way you can get started with very little money and just save that huge living expense and save and invest for more.” [26:30] “From my perspective, there's very little risk, you know, but of course, I've educated myself enough on this space that I know, but you know, somebody new coming in looking out and saying, oh, I want to maybe invest in that.” [29:43] “Passive investors in real estate investments also rely on tax advantages.” Resources Mentioned: LinkedIn Happy Camper Capital The Passive Investing Show
