Today would have been my mom's birthday. She's been gone 33 years, which doesn't seem possible most days... Her death certificate lists "carcinoma of the breast" as cause of death at just 40 years old, after an 8+ year battle. If found in today's world, this would have been treatable and probably curable, but I guess there's no point going into "what ifs"... She is my why! The why behind these videos, behind my journey into motherhood, behind who I am and why I strive so hard to be the best wife, mother, and friend I can be! My friend Amber also had someone dear to her stolen by breast cancer. Her sister Lisa was only 28 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. After learning of a recent mammogram scare for Amber, I invited her over to talk about it and learned the full story of the loss of her sister, which she graciously agreed to share with you here. This is our breast cancer story... or at least part of it! This is just a glimpse into what breast cancer does and how those left in its wake are affected. We hope you are doing everything in your power to prevent it, as early detection is the key to fighting this disease! This is our conversation with Toni, whose mouther was diagnosed with breast cancer a few years ago. Toni shares her story, how its effected her and made her more aware of her own health and why she chose to get an ultrasound now, rather than wait and follow her insurance company's direction. Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel to watch longer version of these episodes, and of course to see the beautiful horses that are with us when we film! Please know your normal & be your own advocate! Breast and ovarian cancers are killers and they don't care that your insurance company thinks it's fine for you to get a screening every other year (every 5 years in some cases). October is breast cancer awareness month, and we are all about awareness here at Candid Conversations! So much so, that we decided to host a little trail ride and breast scan event at Leatherman Lane farm in Concord NC… This was just going to be a simple trail ride and some breast ultrasounds with HerScan when we came up with the idea a few weeks ago. However, after launching the event, everything changed! Several of our friends came forward as battling breast cancer NOW. Countless women expressed interest in getting a scan, but without the means to do so (no insurance, no job, or just not in the budget). So, as most little things at Leatherman Lane do, this event grew… Donors came forward to help those that couldn't otherwise afford a scan. We partnered with Go Jen Go to raise funds with our Ride Jen Ride trail ride, to help them help those battling this disease in our area. We opened the event up to vendors, invited food trucks, and even added an open mic performance! We got donations to raffle off to help pay for the breast scans and make a larger contribution to Go Jen Go! Our friends, neighbors, followers and more showed up on Saturday September 25th, 2021 to shop, eat, ride, sing, and share their story with the Candid Conversations web series and podcast crew. K-love Radio station filled our morning with inspirational music, and we kicked off the day with a little yoga in the round pen! This day was the first in what we have now decided will be an annual event here at Leatherman Lane… We are already planning next years event, which will take place on September 17, 2022. We are looking for donations for our raffle, corporate sponsors, vendors, performers, help from the media, and of course welcome any financial support to help us offer as many free and reduce costs scans as possible! This year, we were able to help 15 women who would have otherwise waited to check their breasts. The power of an ultrasound can increase the detection of breast cancer from approximately 48% to 97%, particularly in women with dense breasts. Ultrasound screenings are capable of detecting cancers that cannot be found by mammography and physical exams alone and we were so happy to be able to bring HerScan to Leatherman Lane to offer this important service! Throughout the month of October, we will be sharing conversations we've had about breast cancer, a well as clips from the 1st annual breast cancer awareness event at Leatherman Lane. We hope they inspire you, comfort you, maybe even change the way you think about this disease. We will be sharing these episodes randomly throughout October, and you won't want to miss even one! We can only share 15 minutes of the Episode on our Insta and podcast, so for the full episode please subscribe to our YouTube channel now! Please comment to join the conversation. Feel free to share these anywhere you would like and speaking of… don't forget to like them. Thank you for watching, and for being part of the conversation! #BecauseHorses #MyHerd #BreastCancerAwareness #Fcancer #Horse #Awareness #GirlPower #Sisterhood #TrailRide #GoJenGo #HerScan #PayItForward #EarlyDetection #KnowYourNormal #CheckYourBoobs #HorseTherapy #FuckCancer #Ultrasound #Herd #SaveTheTatas #RealTalk #goingflat #busylivingwithmets #bccww #BCSM #breastcancer #breastcancerawareness #cancersucks #cancersurvivor #fuckcancer #breastcancerawarenessmonth #brca #survivor #cancerawareness #mastectomy #breastcancerwarrior #cancerfighter #breastcancerfighter #breastcancersupport #pink #cancerwarrior #womenshealth #bhfyp #cancerfree #breastcancersucks #breast #breastcancerjourney #breastcancersurvivors #fightcancer #breastcancerwarriors #breastcancerprevention #support #cancersupport #metastaticbreastcancer #positive #lifeaftercancer #previvor #breasthealth #fightlikeagirl #hope #mammogram #doublemastectomy #beatcancer

I’ve never said the words “Cancer Nerd and Google Scholar” in succession before, but that only partially describes the epicness of my guest today, one Liz Salmi — self-proclaimed “Citizen Scientist” and “Professional Medical Nerd.” — and I attest that both of these are appropriate, accurate and deserved. Diagnosed with brain cancer at 29 and forced down a rabbit hole of a whole bunch of other horrible shit, Liz became the accidental advocate we needed when the Interweb was just becoming the Internet, and when the online support communities we often take for granted barely existed. Her self-made background in digital communications came in very handy when she realized her higher purpose in becoming a human Babelfish capable of helping clinicians and academics speak “patient” in understandable layperson language. She is also a co-founder of the #BTSM community on Twitter, inspired by the patients and researchers who had come together for the #BCSM tweet chats in 2011. She’s a force, the hero nerd we deserve, and, man, does she love her patient portals (said no one ever but her). Join me in also celebrating her 12th brain cancerversay and enjoy the show.
In a special holiday version of 1363 and Me, Krishna and Palacios take a break from speaking with BCSM staff members and welcome 2018 BCSM graduate Katery Castelan to the podcast. She brings nuance, depth, and a strong sense of self to the episode. She discusses her experience as a 2020 Census supervisor, her Mexican heritage, her favorite books, and the importance of sitting still...and more. Enjoy.-----If you have feedback or want to reach out to Krishna or Palacios about the podcast, get at us! We'd love to hear from you. Email us at 1363andMe@gmail.com.
Krishna and Palacios are honored to welcome Rebecca Lord, head chef of BCSM, to the podcast. She filled 1363 and Me with a bright mood, positive energy, and thoughts of yummy food. A self-proclaimed "savage" in the kitchen, Rebecca takes immense pride in serving BCSM's community through the best way she knows how: food. The episode is also sprinkled with other tidbits about Rebecca and her story that are sure to intrigue...so listen in and get to know someone not often heard from in our community. -----If you have feedback or want to reach out to Krishna or Palacios about the podcast, get at us! Ms. Barker joins 1363 and Me for the seventh installment of the podcast. She makes time to talk with Krish and Palacios about her long and adventurous BCSM journey. She also goes into her family, efforts to empower students to "take up space" in her English classes, and some of her favorite delicacies from her hometown of St. Loius. Don't listen while hungry! -----If you have feedback or want to reach out to Krishna or Palacios about the podcast, get at us! We'd love to hear from you. Email us at 1363andMe@gmail.com.

Today, instead of my usual shenanigans, I’d like to treat you to something very special that we have been working on here at OffScrip Media. One of the privileges we have here besides creating and producing epic shows on our network like Am I Dying, Brave New Weed, and NORDpod, is the ability to diversity and expand to producing original series — and we think you’re really going to like what you’re about to listen to. Once you listen to this episode, I urge you to subscribe to the series by searching for B-C-S-M in your favorite podcasting app. This is a labor of love for us. I promise you: you will not be disappointed. And now, without further ado, please enjoy episode one of BCSM.
BCSM's Parent Coordinator joins the podcast to tell her story. She talks about her childhood on the Lower East Side, the ins and outs of her current role of BCSM, snowbirding, the dual pandemics that are reshaping our nation, the infamous BCSM roosters, and more.

Palacios and Krishna talk to Mr. Griffin, who might as well be the uncle of BCSM.
Krishna and Palacios invite Delarosa to the podcast. He is an "ironman" of BCSM who seems to do everything and anything that our community needs. He opens up about many things including how he arrived at BCSM via Ms. Rios as well as his personal roots in DR and the Bronx. We hope you enjoy this peek into the life of the one and only, Delarosa.
Dustin Plantholt’s “Life’s Tough—You Can Be Tougher” podcast this week features Matthew Zachary, cancer survivor, driven patient advocate and inspirational podcaster, and Co-Founder & CEO of OffScrip Media—the first audio broadcast network focused on consumer health and patient advocacy. In 1995, at age 21—a college senior with aspirations of becoming a concert pianist and composer—Matthew was diagnosed with brain cancer and told he likely had less than six months to live. Instantly, Matthew and his family were thrust into unfamiliar and terrifying territory and a cancer landscape much different than today. At the time, cancer resources for young adults were very few and far between, and 'surviving' meant living beyond five years. Although Matthew and his family were offered comfort through a small, fragmented community, they were not able to benefit from many of today's survivorship resources. Like millions of other families, they had to do things on their own, navigate uncharted waters, make best-guess decisions and hope for the best. To help and support other families going through similar situations, in 2007 Matthew founded Stupid Cancer, a progressive social enterprise that linked his worlds of music, cancer advocacy, consumer health marketing, and technology to ensure that people like him and his family would have the opportunity to benefit from community and support resources they only wished they had in 1995. Since its founding, Stupid Cancer has become the leader in the young adult cancer space, breaking all the rules and giving a voice to millions. The podcast that Matthew started, The Stupid Cancer Show, was the world's first health podcast and amassed a global listenership in the millions. Matthew was featured on the cover of Newsweek along with coverage in the NY Times and CBS Evening News. Due in large part to his work, the landscape for Adolescent Young Adult cancer has changed dramatically. In 2019, Matthew stepped down as Stupid Cancer's CEO and launched his latest venture, OffScrip Media, the first podcasting network at the intersection of patient advocacy, education, and digital health with a mission to build community, end isolation, amplify voice, and improve quality of life for patients and caregivers. OffScrip Media produces raw, unapologetic, no-BS content that talks about real problems real people have who struggle every day to endure their lives with dignity. His current podcast, Out of Patients, is being hailed as "the voice of patient advocacy." Next month, they will launch #BCSM, a three-part narrative podcast mini-series about the birth of the Breast Cancer Social Media Community and its impact as a global network of patients, caregivers, clinicians, and researchers dedicated to empowering those affected by breast cancer. Join Dustin and Matt for a heartfelt dialogue on his extraordinary journey and how through his own health struggles is on a mission to help others cope and be heard in their unique health journeys. As Matt says, “Join me on this new adventure as I continue to galvanize the patient voice, blow up the status quo, and make big dents in the universe. After all, we are all very fortunate to not have ordinary lives.”
