When you think of ultrasounds, you probably think of sonograms, pregnancy, mammograms, and gynecology. At least I do! I never would have associated ultrasound with brain cancer-until now. Our guest today, Dr. Vijay Agarwal, CEO of Alpheus Medical, has developed an investigational therapy that pairs a tumor-accumulating drug with low-intensity ultrasound to achieve localized activation inside the brain — an approach sometimes referred to as sonodynamic therapy (SDT). After the drug has accumulated, the Alpheus LIDU® system delivers low-intensity, diffuse ultrasound across the affected brain hemisphere. Dr. Agarwal discusses with me why this technology pairs so well with treating brain cancer. He stresses the importance for more innovative ways to treat brain cancer, and why funding is so crucial to work of many companies like his. More importantly, he sheds light on his passion for this work and his hope for the future.   Watch the video of this episode on our YouTube channel.   Premier sponsors: GammaTile Therapy Curtana Pharmaceuticals

Got a question about the show? Click here & Send us a text! Thanks for tuning in to another episode of The Building Talks Podcast. This one is a little different......and honestly, a little mad.In this special episode, I sit down with Dave Woolsey, General Manager of Renascent in Victoria, who is currently in the middle of riding a push bike (like, a real bike, on the road) from Perth to Melbourne over just 14 days, covering more than 3,500km, all to raise money and awareness for Carrie Bickmore's Beanies for Brain Cancer foundation. What makes this challenge even more ridiculous is that Dave hadn't seriously ridden a bike in almost six years before deciding to commit to it.This conversation goes well beyond cycling. We get into mindset, discipline, suffering, resilience, fatherhood, purpose, and the mental battle that comes with voluntarily putting yourself through discomfort for something bigger than yourself.Dave speaks openly about the emotional driver behind the challenge, particularly the impact brain cancer has on Australian families and children, and why this cause hit home hard enough for him to dedicate months of training and two weeks of pain to raising money for it.We also unpack the psychology behind endurance challenges, the conversations you have with yourself when your body wants to stop, and how leadership, pressure, and resilience from the construction industry strangely prepares people for challenges like this. There are some laughs in there too, including discussions around lycra, saddle soreness, mental breakdowns in the Nullarbor, and the reality of trying to train for elite endurance while balancing work, leadership and family life.More than anything though, this is a conversation about perspective, purpose, and proving to yourself that you're capable of more than you think.Takeaways:✅ Why Dave committed to riding 3,500km for brain cancer research✅ The mental side of endurance and suffering✅ How purpose changes your ability to push through pain✅ Leadership, resilience, and mindset under pressure✅ The emotional impact of brain cancer on families✅ Why ordinary people are capable of extraordinary thingsChapters:00:00  The Journey Begins: A Brother's Challenge05:17  The Route and the Goal: Riding Across Australia08:15  The Physical and Mental Challenge: Overcoming Obstacles14:05  Mindset and Motivation: The Importance of Goals16:36  Breaking the Routine: Finding Balance in Life22:33  Managing Stress Through Physical Activity30:04Mental Resilience and Emotional Support34:48  Raising Awareness for Brain Cancer ResearchIf you'd like to support Dave's ride and help raise money for brain cancer research, head to:p2m4bc.COM  - to follow his journey,And if you're keen to donate, head to:https://fundraise.carriesbeanies4braincancer.com/fundraisers/davidw/perth-to-melb-4-bcEvery donation genuinely helps! The views and information shared in this podcast are for general purposes only and do not constitute legal or professional advice. David Pollack was a first-round NFL draft pick living his childhood dream when a broken neck in his second season ended everything — and he says it was the best thing that ever happened to his faith. The forced stillness he'd never allowed himself finally let him hear from God. Then in 2025, his wife Lindsay was diagnosed with brain cancer, and Pollack discovered that watching someone you love suffer is a completely different test than suffering yourself. He joins Brian From to talk about his new book Every Day Counts, what football taught him about failing forward in faith, and the three R's — reflect, repent, repurpose — that transformed his prayer life from awkward obligation to actual conversation. He also makes a point that lands hard: you have to be selfish in the morning so you can be selfless the rest of the day. If God matters, get up earlier. Plus a college football bonus — David weighs in on Michigan, Illinois, Bryce Underwood, and what he's watching heading into the season. Connor McCrossan and his mother Tammy share their experience with Connor's brain tumour diagnosis, treatment decisions, and recovery — with a focus on cannabis as a therapeutic alternative. Connor began experiencing minor headaches and fatigue in late 2023 before travelling to Thailand in January 2024, initially managing symptoms with paracetamol without informing anyone. Symptoms worsened significantly in Chiang Mai by mid-February 2024 — severe dizziness, imbalance, violent morning sickness, and migraines — which a local Thai hospital attributed to a virus and treated with anti-dizziness medication. Connor flew home after instinct told him something was seriously wrong, enduring an 18-hour journey via Hong Kong to Manchester without disclosing the severity of his condition to Tammy. Back in the UK, Connor was repeatedly sent home by doctors despite continuous vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, and deteriorating condition over eight days. Tammy and her sister pushed persistently for an MRI scan, which hospital staff initially refused, attributing symptoms to an infectious disease in an otherwise fit 23-year-old. A partial MRI scan — completed before Connor had to press the emergency button due to projectile vomiting — revealed an abnormality, leading to a midnight transfer to neurology. Connor was told alone at 23, at midnight, that a large mass had been found on the rear of his brain; the diagnosis was later confirmed as a grade 4 medulloblastoma, a rare and aggressive tumour not seen at Preston Hospital in 14–15 years. A nine-hour surgery successfully removed the tumour, with symptoms largely vanishing within days post-operation; Connor was discharged approximately one week later. On receiving the confirmed cancer diagnosis, Connor adopted a determined mindset — responding to the neurologist's "you're not out of the woods yet" with "yes I am, because it had me against the ropes and now it's my turn." Connor declined chemotherapy due to the risk of developing leukaemia and other severe side effects, opting instead for proton beam therapy at The Christie in Manchester alongside a cannabis-based protocol. Tammy researched and introduced a cannabis suppository protocol — half a gram in the morning, half a gram at night — sourced through Corey Yelland's network, later supplemented with oral CBD and THC tinctures. Cannabis also helped Tammy manage severe anxiety developed during Connor's illness; she later identified PTSD symptoms that emerged after Connor received multiple clear scans. Connor is now fully recovered — driving, working full-time, boxing training, and completing multiple 10K runs — with little to no lasting side effects, now on six consecutive clear scans. Connor advocates strongly for cannabis as a cancer treatment, arguing patients have everything to gain and nothing to lose, and calling for its legalisation as a therapeutic option. A landmark case has found that a veterans' brain cancer must be treated as service-related because of exposure to potentially carcinogenic burn pits on his deployment in Somalia. Open burn pits were used in many conflicts including Iraq and Afghanistan, where there wasn't infrastructure to deal with the large amounts of waste created by military operations. In the US, a long list of conditions are automatically considered to be related to burn pit exposure, including several cancers and respiratory issues. But here in New Zealand none of those conditions have been accepted as service-related, until now. Luka Forman has more.

*Testosterone Directly Suppresses Brain Tumor Growth in Males by 38% Cleveland Clinic research funded by NIH shows testosterone binds androgen receptors in glioblastoma stem cells — the root of tumor recurrence — and cuts growth by 38% when levels are restored. Dave breaks down why the mainstream framing of testosterone and cancer risk has it backwards, what androgen deprivation therapy may be doing to every other cancer pathway simultaneously, and why your hormone panel is now a cancer conversation, not just a performance one. Dave explains exactly what to do if you or a pet is exposed, why outdoor biohackers are the most exposed population, and what pre-travel prevention looks like for anyone heading to endemic regions. Dave sets aside the moral debate to focus on what this legal precedent means for FDA-approved compounded peptides, bioidentical hormones, and telehealth access to any treatment without full pharmaceutical backing — and why this case is one every biohacker should be tracking closely. Dave covers why the conditions producing these jumps aren't going away, what the Influenza D finding means for the raw milk conversation right now, and the mucosal immunity stack that puts you in the strongest position regardless of which virus makes the leap next. Sources: -https://ufhealth.org/news/2026/scientists-say-these-two-viruses-may-become-the-next-public-health-threats -https://www.gavi.org/vaccineswork/six-major-health-threats-could-shape-2026-heres-what-experts-are-watching *Hantavirus Kills 3 on Cruise Ship Eight confirmed or suspected cases of Andes hantavirus aboard the MV Hondius off the Canary Islands have killed three and left two critical, with passengers from 23 countries already dispersed through global airports. Dave cuts through the pandemic panic to explain why American and South American hantavirus strains are categorically more lethal than European ones, why Andes is the only strain on earth that spreads human to human via respiratory droplets, and what early symptom recognition could mean for your survival window if exposure reaches your community. Why is brain cancer so hard to detect and treat - and what if we could change that? In this episode of Rx for Biotech, host Chris Leidli sits down with Marc Hedrick, CEO of Plus Therapeutics, and Russell Bradley, General Manager of CNSide Diagnostics, to explore a new, integrated approach to treating some of the most challenging cancers in medicine: central nervous system (CNS) cancers, including glioblastoma and leptomeningeal metastases. Brain and CNS cancers are among the most difficult to treat because of the blood-brain barrier, which prevents most drugs from reaching tumors. In fact, only a small percentage of therapies can effectively cross into the brain—limiting treatment options and outcomes. Plus Therapeutics is tackling this problem with a novel approach using targeted radiation therapy delivered directly to tumors, bypassing the blood-brain barrier. Their lead program uses a radioactive isotope (rhenium-186) delivered via nanoliposomes, allowing high doses of radiation to reach the tumor while minimizing damage to the rest of the body. At the same time, CNSide Diagnostics is helping physicians detect cancer earlier and monitor treatment response using an advanced cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) diagnostic test. This highly sensitive test can identify even small numbers of tumor cells—helping doctors make faster, more informed treatment decisions. Together, this combination of diagnostics + therapeutics + data represents a new model for precision oncology and personalized cancer care. In this episode, we discuss: • Why brain cancer is so difficult to treat • The role of the blood-brain barrier in limiting therapies • How targeted radiation therapy can improve outcomes • The importance of early detection and diagnostics • How monitoring tumor cells can guide treatment decisions • The future of integrated cancer care (theranostics) This conversation offers a powerful look at how innovation in both treatment and diagnostics could help improve survival and quality of life for patients with some of the most aggressive cancers.

He is now on a mission to break a charity world record by building a huge social media following and turning that into sponsorship money for good causes, rather than asking the public to donate.Ben and Iain chat through everything from marathons in carrying 20KG of weight in wild costumes, to the reality of hearing that diagnosis and how it changes your outlook. They get into mindset, pressure, relationships, social media, and what it actually takes to keep going when things feel overwhelming. There are serious moments, plenty of honest reflections, and also a lot of humour along the way. Iain's perspective on life, and the way he approaches it, makes this one really stand out. A genuinely powerful watch, you will be thinking about long after it ends. The King of Chemo - https://www.instagram.com/thekingofchemo/Ben Sheppard - https://www.instagram.com/bensheppard93/

Lynn's oncologist, initially dismissive of cannabis oil, shifted his position after her results — telling her "keep doing what you're doing" and suggesting they had considered a misdiagnosis before confirming the original diagnosis was correct. Diagnosed at 44 with glioblastoma multiforme and given 6–18 months to live, Lynn is now approaching 57 — a remarkable survival given the ~17% two-year survival rate for this cancer type. Chemo and radiotherapy were completed first — six weeks of concurrent chemotherapy and radiotherapy, a six-week break, then oral chemotherapy — before cannabis oil was introduced. Residual effects from treatment include short-term memory problems and poor balance; hearing loss in the right ear (cancer side) was recently resolved by wax removal, which dramatically improved hearing. CBD oil was used during treatment, with full cannabis oil added approximately six weeks after completing conventional therapy. Maintenance dosing consists of two glycerine capsules of cannabis oil in coconut oil taken nightly, producing restful sleep without a pronounced high — described as a mellow, calming effect. Scotland's continued illegality of cannabis was noted, with Lynn expressing optimism that Scottish independence could bring significant policy change. Lynn continues to be contacted by others with the same diagnosis and advises them to do their own research, take supplements, and not simply replicate her exact approach. Diet was significantly changed post-diagnosis: only home-cooked, organic food from a local farm shop, eliminating processed and ultra-processed foods entirely. The journey prompted a deeper spiritual outlook, greater tolerance, gratitude for small things, and a new prayer practice — a transformation Lynn attributes partly to cannabis. If given the choice again, Lynn would not undergo chemo or radiotherapy, citing post-treatment research into its limitations — a view echoed by most guests Ian has interviewed. Cannabis is framed as effective prophylactic medicine that promotes homeostasis, not just a last-resort treatment for serious diagnoses.   Diagnosed at 34 as a highly active police officer with above-average vision and hand-eye coordination, Jason's condition was especially rare as it typically affects the elderly, organ transplant recipients, or those with AIDS/HIV. Cancer spread to the optic nerve destroyed one eye, which was removed via evisceration last year; a hand-painted prosthetic now tracks the remaining eye, and Jason reports being completely pain-free post-removal. Whole-brain radiation was firmly refused due to the risk of permanent cognitive and personality changes; targeted eye radiation (17 of 24 planned treatments) achieved remission instead. Fifth relapse in 2018 involved six brain lesions including one on the brain stem, a grand mal seizure lasting over five hours, and an inability to walk — Jason drove himself to the hospital and fell in the parking lot before receiving care. Radical lifestyle change followed the fifth relapse: eliminated alcohol, switched to organic produce, wild-harvested venison, exercise, yoga, meditation, and brain-training exercises. Cannabis oil use — oral, suppository, and vaping — is credited with reducing tumor spots on the left tricep within two months (spots were gone before conventional treatment began) and with providing neuroprotection against treatment-related brain damage. Doctors and medical staff were consistently unwilling to discuss cannabis on record, citing protocol restrictions and job security concerns, despite acknowledging Jason's survival as medically baffling. Autologous stem cell transplant at Memorial Sloan Kettering New York was selected as the treatment for the fifth relapse; the procedure involves harvesting stem cells via centrifuge, freezing them, then reinfusing after eight days of high-dose chemotherapy. Jason's stem cell "rebirth day" coincided with his actual birthday (April 24th), Easter, and spring — an alignment no medical facility he asked had ever encountered before. Brain cancer's invisible long-term deficits — poor memory, balance issues, loss of depth perception, declining night vision, and seizure-related damage — are widely misunderstood; people assume remission means full recovery. Cannabis is considered neuroprotective by Jason; a single hit of a joint provided significant pain relief after eye removal when prescribed medications failed entirely. Growing up near a toxic landfill is identified as a likely environmental cause of the cancer cluster in his community, including his own brain cancer, his mother's fatal colon cancer at 56, and two miscarriages. Key advice for cancer patients: eliminate sugar and alcohol, prioritize high-quality food, maintain a positive mindset, cut out negative media, and seek community support — diet and mental state are the first areas Jason addresses when contacted by newly diagnosed individuals. Jason is developing a public speaking career and has two books in progress: Memoirs of Murray Road and Fifth Time's the Charm: The Remarkable Story of a Five-Time Terminal Brain Cancer Survivor. New research from Yale shows that aging doesn't have to result in mental and physical decline. In fact, they found that nearly half of older adults actually improved in cognitive or physical ability over a 12-year period. Dr Graham Easton, a family doctor, discusses what this can teach us about what we can and can't control when it comes to aging.Brain tumours can be notoriously difficult to treat because many therapeutic drugs are not allowed through the blood-brain barrier – an extremely selective system that controls access in and out of the brain. Now, researchers at the University of Southern California have shown that laser-induced tumour heating can open blood-brain barrier, improving the effectiveness of immunotherapy in brain cancer.Erica Benke reports from Finland, where the Winter Swimming World Cup is underway, looking at why winter swimming is growing in popularity and what researchers say about its real health effects and risks. A once‑rare form of organ donation is now transforming transplant care in the U.S and other countries, offering hope to thousands on waiting lists. These new techniques are allowing doctors to keep organs in good condition for longer, even after the donor's heart has stopped beating. It's one of those weeks where the headlines feel uncomfortably close to home. Between James Van Der Beek's death from colorectal cancer and Eric Dane's ALS diagnosis, it's hard not to think about your own health and mortality. So we brought on our friend Mickey Rapkin — journalist, author, former GQ editor, and yes, the guy who wrote Pitch Perfect before it became a major studio franchise. In August 2025, Mickey's older brother Jon died from brain cancer. We talk about sibling loss (aka the worst club), the sacred inside jokes, the random movie lines that become part of your daily language, and how grief rewires you on a cellular level. We also get into Mickey's Men's Health piece about cancer screenings — the big question of how much do you want to know, what testing can (and can't) do, and why “control is an illusion” is both depressing and… oddly clarifying.  Symptoms leading to diagnosis included progressively worsening headaches, tinnitus with pulsing in ears, dizziness, and immense head pressure during treadmill training that prompted an emergency eye exam revealing severe optic nerve bleeding.Surgery on November 1st, 2022 successfully removed 60 to 70% of the brain tumor, with the surgeon surprised Nathan didn't have a speech impediment given the tumor's extremely large size. Two weeks before diagnosis, Nathan heard a podcast about a man alleging to cure cancer with cannabis oil, and this person was providing the treatment free to cancer patients for seven years.Treatment protocol involved taking 10 pills daily containing 44 milligrams of cannabis each, combined initially with six cycles of chemotherapy and radiation, followed by six additional cycles of chemotherapy.Nathan's oncologist initially called the cannabis treatment a scam but later became encouraging about continuing the pills, stating Nathan was his best brain cancer patient at BC Cancer and that he never sees such results.Psychological impact included severe trauma for Nathan, his wife as caregiver, and 13-year-old son who witnessed Nathan crawling on floors due to extreme nausea and complications including a life-threatening blood clot.Cannabis provided multiple benefits including pain management, emotional regulation helping with depression, improved sleep for body recovery, and reduced inflammation which aided his athletic training recovery.Nathan was declared cancer free in 2023-2024 after continuous tumor shrinkage, with his oncologist stating he does not relate Nathan's success to the chemotherapy and radiation treatments.Multiple doctors have looked at Nathan's case and asked him to confirm his diagnosis, stating "you know you should be dead, right?" due to the rarity of his survival and recovery.Holistic healing approach included eliminating sugar, regular fasting for autophagy, sprouting broccoli for sulforaphane, taking vitamins C and D, and daily grounding by placing bare feet on earth for 30 minutes.A false positive scare occurred in November 2025 when an MRI showed what appeared to be recurrence, but December scan confirmed it was an artifact and Nathan remained cancer free.Nathan now coaches other cancer patients and has seen success with three people who experienced pseudoprogression (inflammation mistaken for tumor growth) that later showed actual shrinkage on subsequent scans. His dog was diagnosed with aggressive malignant melanoma in November 2025 with high mitotic count and given weeks to months to live, but is now being treated with the same cannabis oil formula designed for pets.Cancer experience completely transformed Nathan's perspective from being depressed and unmotivated before diagnosis to becoming extremely positive and passionate about helping others explore cannabis treatment options. “I kept saying...what is the best possible outcome right now?” Amanda is a 43-year-old ultra endurance athlete who began experiencing strange symptoms in 2024: pressure headaches, déjà vu, vision problems, and eventually bizarre behaviors like eating off an upside-down plate and walking out of her shoe without noticing. After an urgent care doctor dismissed her symptoms as TMJ (lockjaw?!), her leg buckled in her own bedroom, sending her to the emergency room where an MRI revealed the truth: glioblastoma, one of the most aggressive forms of brain cancer. Amanda's journey from diagnosis through an eight-hour awake craniotomy to her current life 16 months post-diagnosis is marked by perseverance and not anger or fear…but love. Drawing on her experience as an ultra endurance athlete—particularly a brutal 36-hour race in Stratton, Vermont, where she trained in relentless rain and mud—Amanda applies the same mindset that got her through the worst physical challenges of her life to this new reality. Today, she jokes in her hardest hours that “ In this episode, Amanda and Cody discuss the immediate acceptance she felt upon diagnosis, the "scanxiety" she experiences every 10 weeks, the heartbreak of losing friends with glioblastoma , and why she chose not to see her cancer as an enemy. Amanda has made it past the 16-month median survival time for glioblastoma and is currently training for the same endurance event she was preparing for when diagnosed, hoping to raise $5,000 for brain cancer research through Stash Strong. (You can help support Amanda at that link!) Amanda's athletic background provides a unique lens for understanding resilience, and her honest discussion of both the joyful and devastating aspects of her journey offers a masterclass in living fully while facing an uncertain future.

I am always amazed and humbled when any parent can come on to my podcast to talk about the passing of their child from any form of pediatric cancer. This feeling was no more striking than in my conversation with Tim Finkel, who spoke so eloquently about losing his and Angela's youngest son Ryder just 54 days ago to  DIPG at the age of 9. This Pediatric Brain cancer still does not have any type of good news as far as a survival rate is concerned, which is the same story that DIPG parents and families have been hearing for over 60 years.

Send us a textHow ketosis and ketogenic diets work and how these tools can improve metabolic health, brain function, and even cancer management.Topics Discussed:Organs have different fuel preferences: brain strongly prefers glucose, heart prefers fatty acids, skeletal muscle is flexible and likes fat/ketones.Humans evolved with high metabolic flexibility; regular ketosis was normal for ancestors, but today most people never experience it.“Keto flu” is largely glucose withdrawal plus electrolyte/sodium loss; proper salt and hydration prevent most symptoms.Classic medical ketogenic diet is ~90% fat (historically saturated); modern versions often use more monounsaturated fats, MCTs, and higher protein.Saturated fat is not inherently atherogenic in the context of weight stability or caloric deficit; excess calories from any source can dysregulate metabolism.Exogenous ketones (e.g. BHB) provide energy, reduce ROS, stabilize membranes, increase inhibitory tone (GABA), and have hormone-like signaling effects independent of diet.Cancer cells often show Warburg effect (damaged mitochondrial respiration → heavy reliance on glycolysis); lowering glucose and raising ketones can stress cancer cells.True keto-adaptation for athletic performance requires 6–12 weeks; after that, elite athletes can match or exceed prior high-carb performance at sub-maximal and endurance efforts.Practical Takeaways:Therapeutic carbohydrate restriction (50–100 g/day for many people) plus occasional fasting or ketone supplements can restore metabolic flexibility with far fewer side effects than strict keto.Prioritize whole-food fats (eggs, fatty fish, beef, olive oil, butter/lard) and minimize processed keto products loaded with seed oils.Supplementing BHB (salts or esters) or MCT oil can ease the transition into ketosis, boost ketones without strict dieting, and may support brain and metabolic health.Regularly check basic blood markers (glucose, lipids, electrolytes) and consider an OmegaQuant test; optimizing metabolic health is one of the strongest preventable steps against cancer, neurodegeneration, and heart disease.Supplemental Ketone (BHB):KetoCitra—Ketone body BHB with potassium, calcium & magnesium, formulated with kidney health in mind. The blood-brain barrier (BBB), while essential for protecting the brain from toxins, has long been one of the greatest obstacles in treating brain diseases, particularly aggressive cancers like glioblastoma. Most chemotherapy drugs simply cannot reach the brain in effective concentrations, leaving patients with limited treatment options and poor outcomes.  In this episode of Curing with Sound, we speak with Graeme Woodworth, MD, Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, whose work is transforming the landscape of brain tumor treatment through the use of focused ultrasound–mediated BBB opening. Dr. Woodworth discusses the role of microbubbles, his efforts to develop a real-time monitoring and dosing strategy for BBB opening, and the exciting results from his multicenter glioblastoma clinical trial. Discussion highlights: Glioblastoma Clinical Trial: Results published in Lancet Oncology report, for the first time, a possible survival benefit among newly diagnosed glioblastoma (GBM) patients treated with focused ultrasound + temozolomide (or TMZ, a chemotherapy drug). Researchers used focused ultrasound to noninvasively open the BBB in GBM patients before administering TMZ. When compared with a matched control group, a 40% increase in overall survival was observed. Published Findings for Measuring and Predicting BBB Opening: Researchers established a real-time, ultrasound-based “dose” measurement—using acoustic emissions from microbubble oscillations—to accurately predict when focused ultrasound will open the blood-brain barrier in glioblastoma patients. They discovered a non-linear dose–response range where blood-brain barrier opening is maximized, enabling safer, more precise, and more effective treatment monitoring.
