Before Michael comes on, Jearlyn talks with WCCO host Henry Lake about his thoughts on Dave Lee's retirement. Then, it's on to the merriment. Michael tells us about his trips to the re-opened Disneyland. Plus, we hear about the infamous Chateau Marmont, COVID tragedy and vaccine hesitancy, and the impact of the 2020 Census. Hannah Galliers has navigated through her journey with Borderline Personality Disorder, known in the United Kingdom as Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder (EUPD). Although Hannah's official diagnosis with BPD was recent, she has been on a healing journey through meditation and mindfulness practices and other therapies for several years. As with many people with BPD, she grew up in a broken environment where she was not allowed to process emotion. In college, she faced recovery from sexual assault, and shortly after, one of her best friends passed away. The realization that the path she was walking might lead to her death, pushed her to seek support for her mental health. It has taken years for Hannah to finally receive the official diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder. Her upbeat demeanor and lack of skills to recognize and communicate her feelings kept the depth of her struggle from being recognized by both herself and the professionals she interacted with. Finally, when she got in to see a psychiatrist about a possible ADHD diagnosis, that doctor redirected her to BPD. Unfortunately, the best-known treatment for this disorder (DBT) is not readily available in England, so Hannah has not yet begun that course. The practices that have served her best in coping with BPD have been placing consistent structure in her day, reflecting on her long-term progress, and keeping her mindset open and positive. Hannah started this journey without a lot of support, but as she has chosen to be open about her struggles and work hard to feel better, she found the love of her life. She and her partner Michael, have a baby and a home and will soon be married. Michael has been very patient with her and been able to recognize when the illness is talking and not his beloved Hannah. Together, they navigated through pregnancy that was made more difficult not only by BPD but also COVID lockdown. Before Michael, she had typical experiences with romantic relationships: the ups and downs, emotional breakups, and instability… but today, there is hope. People like Michael do exist out there, who are willing to communicate, take everything with a grain of salt and a pound of patience, and to keep their loved one with BPD accountable to do what they need to feel better. Nine minutes is just about the amount of time needed to review anything…or so Steve (@LasVegasUK) seems to think. On this episode of ZorkCast Steve introduces a new concept, known as “Nine minutes on…” whereby Michael and Steve spend strictly nine minutes discussing something related to Las Vegas and/or travel. They aren’t allowed to go any further, as Michael has a special buzzer that goes off once the strict nine-minute time limit is up. The first-ever “Nine Minutes On” episode features Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, Las Vegas. Michael and Steve discuss what the hotel rooms are like, how the casino is, and where are the best spots to eat, all in strictly 9 minutes. Michael shares some stories of his own along the way, whilst Steve shifts the focus to include Mandalay Bay’s two other hotel concepts – The Delano and the Four Seasons. The discussion moves onto one of the most attractive elements of Mandalay Bay, the pool area and the fantastic wave pool. We also consider the location of the resort, whilst a negative for some Michael highlights how it is excellent for #AVGeeks due to the resort overlooking the airport. Before Michael and Steve know it, the buzzer is going off, and they have to end their discussion. Are you thinking of staying at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino? Or even just considering dropping in for a bite to eat, or to play in the casino? Our nine-minute snapshot into the resort is the perfect way to make your decision ahead of any Las Vegas trip.Introducing the new co-host for ZorkCast Steve - LasVegasUKFollow him on Twitter @LasVegasUKGuidanceLiving the Mlife: An Introduction – MGM M life Rewards Loyalty ProgramMandalay Bay Las VegasFour Seasons Las VegasDelano Las VegasZorkCast FaceBook Group- JOIN TODAY! Guest, Heather Petersen says she’s ditched heels, but after speaking with her it’s more like she’s always kept one foot in a work boot, while the other was in something flashier. She’s started up a women-only mentoring and workshop facility on a working farm in rural Minnesota. Before Michael can even get to that, he and Heather talk about the need to balance your own energies and spaces, they don’t have to be equal, but they need to be in sync somehow. They do pause to contemplate how some of these things may sound to the skeptical ear, but the truth is that it works. Corporate life is a rough space for us all, and when unbalanced, unsupported people walk into leadership roles it’s just chaos feeding chaos. It's times like this when life feels like it's out to get you. Like it has this unbeatable doom for you to be alone FOREVER. I've experienced that feeling before. It's very uncomfortable to go through. Some people are able to hold a pocket of hope in their mind's eye. A small yet not insignificant bit of fantasy that something, somewhere, someday is waiting on you to arrive to it. And when you do, everything makes sense. Michael Vaccaro came across a poem once, and never let it go. Till this day, he carries that poem in his pocket. Today you're going to hear a story of how two men were connected years before ever meeting or knowing each other existed all because of a simple poem. The natural wonder that Michael had led him to hold onto this poem year after year after year. Then one day, he meets its author. What unfolds from there is pure beauty. This is a story that is bound to move you. It will most likely tug your heartstrings. Before Michael ever met his husband, its as though he was emotionally protected by him - having this poem to put hope in. And after his husband left, he continued leaving blessings in Michael's life. Giving him the gift of awareness of what life is all about: something more, something more significant than the physical. I hope you enjoy today's story. It's important to note that Michael Vaccaro permitted me to use his story in today's episode. The audio used today was initially sourced from a video I came across on facebook called "That Moment Death Becomes Less Scary" and was produced by "Soul Pancake." From being forced to layoff his whole staff, to selling his company for $140 million, our next guest, Michael Diamant, has great insight on how he became successful. Michael Diamant created a well-known brand with his wife, called Skip Hop, which was sold to Carter’s for $140 million. It all started with a diaper bag in 2003. Michael and his wife wanted a diaper bag that was fully functional, however, also appealed to a fashion savvy crowd. The company continued to grow for 15 more years creating several more innovative baby care products before they were bought by Carter’s. Now both Michael and his wife continue to work with Carter’s to help grow the brand Skip Hop. Before Michael created a very successful brand, he had a great career and started multiple companies. He has a background in advertising and was a happy employee at MTV. Michael Katz is the Founder & CEO @ mParticle, the customer data platform that integrates all of your data and orchestrates it across channels, partners and systems. To date, Michael has raised over $75m in funding with mParticle from the likes of Social Capital, Greylock Partner, GV, Battery Ventures and more great names. Prior to founding mParticle, Mike was the Founder & CEO @ Interclick, where he organically grew revenue to over $140m in 5 years. The company went public in 2009 and was acquired by Yahoo in 2012 for $270m, a 50% premium on existing share price. If that was not enough, Michael is also a board member at Adaptly and Brightline. In Today’s Episode We Discuss: How did Michael make his way into the world of SaaS with the founding of Interclick? How did that translate to his founding and running of mParticle today? How does Michael think about building a company and a category at the same time? In terms of resource allocation, if one is required to invest heavily into brand, how can this be done with a seed round? What were the most challenging elements of category creation for Michael with mParticle? When it comes to selling to enterprise, how can startups look to meet and stand out in the sea of startups to the enterprise buyers of today? How can they look to build trust with those buyers? How much of a role do VCs provide in terms of providing legitimacy and validation to a startup? Before Michael has said ‘multi-year deals are not good’, why does he hold this belief contra to most in the ecosystem? In which cases do they work well and is there nuance? How does Michael think about the element of deferred revenue and it’s subsequent effect on potential acquirers? How does Michael think about pilot programs? If mainly selling to one market segment, should pilots within other segments be accepted? What conditions on signing must be set to ensure success on completion of pilot? How should pilot programs change and evolve over time with the company? Michael’s 60 Second SaaStr: What does Michael know now that he wishes he had known at the beginning? We couldn't let this thing go. Before Michael departed for Melbourne, we had a couple of drinks and had one last face to face chat to kick off the new year. We're talking resolutions, predictions, retrospection, and a few other -tions. We'll be back for more FaceTime podcasts in 2017, but in the meantime, this episode's mistakes include: Exceeding the hour limit on episodes. A few in-room audio hiccups due to unsteady mic. Not inviting Michael's dad to join us. Egregious factual inaccuracies. Watch the fireworks, then like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, rate us on iTunes, and send your questions to deepfought@gmail.com.
Building off of last weeks podcast Michael brings another dead guest on his show, Alan Watts. Watts is responsible for introducing eastern traditions to the West, i.e. Buddhism. He has been featured many times on the podcast. Is money the root of all evil? Is money the goal? Why are making mistakes so crucial to your life? Does money equal wealth? These are all topics that are discussed and answered on the podcast. Before Michael plays a clip from Watts, he shares a story from his recent trip to California. Michael had lunch next to a table that was the quintessential example of money, wealth, and the stereotypes that live in Los Angeles. His opening story is food for thought as you listen to Watts and his wisdom. Born in England of Jamaican parents (her mother Vera an art historian and museologist and her father Charles an actor/broadcaster/comedian), Michael received her earliest education and what she considers her most formative years abroad. At the age of ten, she migrated to the United States with her mother and two siblings. Living in Maryland and later Washington, DC, Michael slowly adjusted to the American way of life. She went on to study acting at Howard University for her undergraduate degree and continued at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts for her Masters. Before Michael's work in film and television, she enjoyed memorable performances on stages throughout the country, most notably is her experience on Broadway in the critically acclaimed Ragtime. Although Michael is automatically considered an African-American, because of her international background she eagerly acknowledges that she is more specifically an African/British/Jamaican/American and any attempt to exclude any part of that reality would be an incorrect representation of who she truly is. The actress Michael Hyatt has been a part of some of the television’s most iconic series – from “The West Wing,” to “The Wire,” “True Detective,” and a hilarious role on the web series “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.” Her recent turn on the silver screen was in “Night Crawler,” starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Hyatt currently stars as Detective Sheila Muncie on the award-winning Showtime drama series “Ray Donovan,” Also the New FX's Snowfall - John Singleton & Short Film -Dara Ju. On today’s podcast Michael breaks apart comments from a Ray Dalio article. Dalio is one of the most successful hedge fund managers alive. He does not give out too much information on his trading strategy, except that he is 100% systematic. Before Michael begins reading the article he asks, “When the Fed raises interest rates, what will happen? Will the world end like people seem to think?” The first article he reads from was written in 2015 and answers questions on interest rates and the Fed. Next, Michael reads an article from 2016 where Ray comments on the Fed further. Ray is running a systematic firm, however, he gives historical narratives of the debt cycle. Michael still asks the question, “How do Ray’s words connect to trading? When to buy? When to sell?” Michael stresses that presenting “Oz behind the curtain” statements do not help anyone in there trading. If someone said buy here, sell here, that would help people, but using terminology that could be interpreted as anything is worthless.
