There has been a lot of talk on social media about the Netflix show My Unorthodox Life these last couple weeks, and it has brought up a lot of different emotions for me. I thought I had healed from my upbringing, but I have found that I am still broken. After listening to others express their feelings for several days, I wanted to share how it has made me feel and what I have learned from this experience. My authentic self doesn't necessarily fit anywhere. I felt attacked by both sides of the argument because I follow Orthodox Judaism, but I don't always hold up the traditions or view things as expected. There is a tremendous price to pay for living your authentic self in a community where you are rebuked for even thinking differently from the standard. But the price you pay for abandoning your authentic self is even greater than the risk of losing your community. These last couple weeks brought up a lot of hurt from the past and made me feel threatened all over again, but it also emphasized what a great community I have built as my authentic self of people who will listen to me without judging and offer their support. I am so grateful to those that have been helping me process this pain. My emotions emphasized the ways I might be judging and hurting others. The things I was hurt by are a good indicator of how I cause pain, and I have begun to work through how I can do better. How can I have compassion towards all these people who are reacting out of fear? If we can go through life and not judge others, but listen to understand, maybe our world can become a more accepting place. If we each make an effort to not suffocate our own authentic selves or those around us, perhaps people will feel less afraid. We each must try to be the person others feel comfortable sharing their deepest feelings and thoughts with, even if those thoughts do not agree with what is true for us personally. What is intuitive eating and what is the mindset behind intuitive eating? What's the difference between a registered dietician and a nutritionist? Gila Glassberg, an MS, RDN, CDN, Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor, answers these questions and more. Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch, developed a system called intuitive eating which consists of 10 steps. People placed on what they'd call “sensible meal plans” are really diets. What they found was that people would inevitably, they would lose the weight, but they would inevitably gain back the weight within a few months or a few years and they were feeling really frustrated. In fact, most people who lose weight on a diet, gain it back within the first five years. With intuitive eating, you eventually do want to focus on nutrition and what's called joyful movement, which is finding the movement that feels right to you, without feeling restricted. The first principle of intuitive eating is called rejecting the diet mentality. Another is honoring your hunger. Gila walks us through the steps and tools on how to be aware to choose the foods that are good for us and feel good about the choices we are making to help us and navigate through life. Intuitive eating is good for our mental state, our physical state, our relationships, our emotional well being and so much more which goes from the inside out and puts out all kinds of fires. Today, my new friend Naomi shares with us the story of how she lost half her body weight. At her heaviest, she was nearly 340 pounds, but today, she weighs about 160. She is active and able to keep up with her five-year-old twin boys, something she could not do when they were two. After struggling with her weight for her entire life, dealing with thyroid issues, and a period of infertility, Naomi has come to a place where she feels healthy and whole. Naomi said something to me that blew my mind. I mentioned that what we choose to put into our bodies and how we exercise will affect our mental health. She replied back to me saying, “and vice versa.” which is truly paramount and so true. When we feel emotionally low or having a “bad” day, we often mistreat our bodies due to our unfocused mindset. If the chemicals in our brain are not balanced, our bodies actually process foods differently. As strange as it sounds, if you're having a bad day and eat some chocolate, you're likely to gain more weight than you would if you ate that very same chocolate as a happy treat on a “good” day. Naomi also shared her morning routine with me, starting at 4:30 each morning and she watches this gratitude practice with Tony Robbins. She then listens to and repeats 100 affirmations. She journals and reads before exercising for a half hour, plus a walk if her family is still asleep. After the kids get off to school, Naomi drinks 2 liters of water and takes her supplements. She doesn't eat anything until some oatmeal or a smoothie at 11am. She makes sure to eat plenty of vegetables and protein and to drink lots of water, every day, with no excuses. Even during government imposed lock down due to Corona Virus restrictions, Naomi found a way to walk a 5k indoors. Each day starts with boosting her mental health and getting her in a positive mindset before she even tries to take care of her physical body or any other member of her family. Atara Weisberger is an expert on the connection between our mental and physical health. She coaches people to improve their lives through nutrition and movement. She shares her experience with coaching health and wellness, how to recognize and choose to change negative habits, and the mental health benefits of a good diet and exercise. Atara helped me with my own struggle to eat healthy food before dinnertime, asking what values were driving my desire to stop eating cake in the afternoons. I know how interconnected physical and mental health are, and I need to make good choices for both in order to feel my best overall. I know there are long-term implications of poor daily choices, and I want to help my future self thrive, as I work to give my family the best at dinner every night. She suggested I change my mindset, so that I don't feel obligated to give up the foods that bring me so much joy, but choose instead to add something which I know will make my body feel good, versus the yummy snack that I enjoy more. Everything in our bodies, including our minds, is intertwined. Nutritious food provides us with energy and the ability to focus so that we can accomplish what we need to. Exercise has been proven to release hormones in the brain that make us feel good emotionally. Yet, when someone is feeling unhappy, the current model tells doctors to immediately prescribe them strong medications before providing them with strategies to solve the issue with their own body. Why don't they prescribe a trial of an exercise regimen for 30 days the same way they do with drugs? It is possible to eat a safe and healthy diet while on a budget and there are certain foods that do not need to be purchased organically. There are even foods that should just be avoided altogether. For a little homework, search for the lists she discusses in this eye opening episode to find out which foods have the most chemicals. The power of manifesting one's dreams, goals and hopes into reality isn't magic. Its a power. So powerful is this gift, called the Law of Attraction that we receive from God, which we all have, that we can receive abundance and blessings to move forward on our paths of want. What we want can be manifested into reality and tapping into this power requires a few simple steps. One must first realize that we all possess this God given, God created ability, which is as real as the force of gravity. Sometimes, God only gifts our wishes to us when he believes that we are ready. Sometimes, he gifts us with so much better. But we are always in the position of asking, visualizing and living with a more open heart. We also must identify what we actually want. Focus on it, think of it as if it is real. See the details in your mind's eye. Finally, we must also be passionate about it. Let it consume us in a healthy way and the pathways will open. First a trickle, then a stream, and then the floodgates will open. This energy is real. We often call the moments we become aware our wishes have been fulfilled miracles. And they are. Join us in hearing a personal event from Matana's life, highlighting this amazing power. Have you ever wondered why the person you want to have a relationship with isn't ready, or doesn't seem to be on the same page as you? We want other people to be ready to make changes at the same time that we are ready. But that is rarely the case, and we can't make someone else ready for change. We have to ask the hard question of, are we making someone else a priority over ourselves. Because we have our own traumas, our own experiences, and our own things that we have to work through and we have to work through those and find joy for ourselves. We can't expect other people to fill that void and we can't expect others to be seeking out the same things at the same time as us. Finding joy should be a priority, and if someone or something is distracting from that, we have to examine why we are allowing that person or thing to distract us from the joy we deserve. -- Topics Discussed: Are we ready for the relationship we are in? How to deal with someone else not being on the same page as you. Choosing yourself before someone else. Taking a good look at what stage of life you are in. -- Connect with us! We asked nutritionist, biochemist, and holistic health expert Nilli Grutman to talk a bit about the link between our physical health, mental health, and nutrition. She shared with us her philosophy about nutrition and how to approach eating well with an energy of giving rather than an energy of withholding. Nilli has spent the past seven years healing and guiding people with holistic nutrition. She seeks to restore her clients to a state of wellness by exploring the physical causes behind emotional imbalance. She detailed her process for us, starting with identifying hormone and neurochemical imbalances through advanced testing and ending with a love-filled approach to fueling our bodies. Her lesson for us today included an explanation of the four primary neurochemicals at work in our minds, how to identify an imbalance, and how to approach solving that imbalance. She outlined how she crafts each person's path to wellness by blending wholesome nutrition and eating mindfully. We hope this conversation will give you the tools to examine your relationship with eating and how it can impact your overall health. Holistic nutrition is not just a fix for a problem, but a part of every person's total wellness! I wanted to talk to you about one of my favorite quotes. “It is easier to build strong children than it is to repair broken men”. What does this mean? How can we support the men in our lives? I work with a lot of women in my practice who are trying to “fix” the man in their life. Although it may feel instinctual, we have to remember that everyone's healing journey is their own and it is not your responsibility. If we know someone who needs help, we need to encourage them to get professional help. Also, one of the best things we can do is to spend our time and energy investing in this next generation by focusing on spending quality time with our children and investing in them. This is a wrap on season three! We are looking forward to connecting back with you for a powerful new season coming soon. Sometime, we are beset with fear, panic, anxiety, unhappiness or other negative feelings. In this episode, Matana explains how mindset and proper preconditioning can offset negative emotions, but still hold on to them, in the right way. Learning that a teen who blossoms into an adult will be off to higher education away from home can be daunting and downright sad. Learning to cope with a family member who moves on to new things is exciting, and a thing of joy, but can also be laden with mixed emotions of sadness at leaving the presence of a family staple. We learn a new twist on a previously discussed idea, of how to not ignore those mixed, opposite feelings, but to embrace them and allow them to coexist. Matana also sheds a little more detail on the upcoming private gratefulness retreat that she will be hosting for a small group of hand selected individuals, another milestone she set years ago, of which more details will follow in the coming weeks and months ahead. We are coming to you today to talk about pursuing your dreams. I have been talking to a variety of people over the last couple of weeks and have heard a common theme. They are in a career but do not feel like they are pursuing their passion. Have you ever felt that way? You deeply want to pursue a certain path but feel like you have invested so much time in something else? I want to challenge you today to take a look at your life and be honest with yourself, what is truly your passion? What would you choose to do as a career if there were no barriers? In this episode, I share with you a simple practice that will help you take small steps to make your dream a reality. Life's too short to work our entire lives and be unhappy. Even if you are just pursuing your passion as a hobby, you might be surprised how implementing just a little of what you love into your day can help your mental health and even slowly move you towards a career you are in love with. -- Topics Discussed: Rediscovering your passion A simple exercise that will help you write out your vision Encouragement to go the unbeaten path -- Connect with us! As Matana celebrates a two year milestone and wishes a Happy Birthday to the Hope to Recharge podcast, she gives gratitude to those instrumental in those who offered support and guidance in its creation. Although the microphone for the podcast was purchased many many months prior, she couldn't get the first step in opening the box and it laid on the side for some time. Through perseverance and hand holding, she took that initial step to open the box, despite her fears, anxiety and doubt. This episode is a must for those hesitant to take the initial steps to accomplishing goals as there is truly nothing to fear but fear itself. Matana also announces an upcoming private gratefulness retreat that she will be hosting for a small group of hand selected individuals, another milestone she set years ago, of which more details will follow in the coming weeks and months ahead. Dr. John Demartini’s books and podcasts taught me a tremendous amount about the law of attraction and living with gratefulness and changed how I view life. He shares his insight on the topic of core values, which are the vales that are most important to each of us. For some, this is learning or respecting others’ time or not being wasteful. For others, it may be teaching, being present in the moment, generosity or spontaneous fun. Each person has a different set of core values as life is not black and white and there are many shades of gray and colors. Besides most universally accepted divine laws such as, “Murder is bad,” there are no universal values, as everyone has a different focus which they bring to the table. Many people do not know what their core values actually are and Dr. Demartini has developed an assessment tool (https://drdemartini.com/values/) that helps people understand what will bring them the most fulfillment in life. This assessment is based on our current actions and "thought" life. We run our lives according to values, whether we perceive it or not. Each decision we make, requires us to prioritize. When we choose one value, we ignore another. What we actually choose to do from our limited resources of time, energy, and money, indicates what we value most. Sometimes, we find that which we actually value is not what we or others hoped it to be, but if we embrace what our true values are, we can become the person we’re truly meant to be. Dr. Demartini has worked with many parents to assess what is “wrong” with their children. Why aren't they being successful? Why can't they live up to expectations? Dr. Demartini has found that often, the problem is not that the child is being lazy or defiant, but that they are frustrated by not being allowed to live according to their core values. What they might need is someone to come talk to them and understand what matters to them on the deepest level. Parents and children can then work together to establish goals and set up a plan that makes sense to the child at their core, making them feel respected and free to live uniquely, as they were created to do. We also discussed what it means when we feel negative emotions and what that tell us about ourselves and about the people around us. If our anger is triggered, that is often a good indicator that what is happening goes against our values, giving us an opportunity to learn about the values of those who upset us. They are likely acting according to their own values, and we can learn more about what those values are by what they’ve said or done. Being sick is never any fun, it’s miserable. When you add onto being sick the fact of being single and not having anyone there to help take care of you it can be even harder to get through. It’s important to realize that when we feel sick we will feel down mentally, and that’s a normal thing. During those times it’s very important for us to reach out for help. Reaching out for help is not a sign of weakness and often it can be extremely important not just for our physical health, but our mental health as well. In addition when we are sick we don’t know if things may take a turn for the worse, and if they do it is crucial we have someone available that we have reached out to who knows what we are going through. We are coming to you today to talk about a character trait called “Highly Sensitive Person” (or HSP). The word “sensitive” is not negative, it simply means someone who is highly attuned. It means that your emotions run deep. The other part of HSP is that the person’s body (or nervous system) becomes a little more attuned as well-meaning you become sensitive to your surroundings, like fabrics or the light or temperature in a room. I wanted to give this brief explanation because this personality is more prevalent than you may think, and is common within the black community. So if you feel misunderstood sometimes, or feel like there is something wrong with you, I wanted to take the time to assure you that you are not. As a fellow HSP and a trained clinician trained specifically in Highly Sensitive People, I can help you navigate through the unique way you move through the world. I understand that it can feel like you are a square peg in a round hole- but the personality you have is okay. If you have questions or need additional support, please connect with me using the links below. -- Topics Discussed: The characteristics of a Highly Sensitive Person Why it is important to understand HSPs Redefining what “sensitive” means. -- Connect with us! Dr. Karin Anderson Abrell shares her story of choosing to let her core values lead her life, even when others don’t understand. She was unwed until her 40’s because she would not settle for a marriage that did not align with her values. Because of this experience, much of her work has been about helping others thrive as a single person. Our decisions and feelings are based on values. We need to understand our core values before we can begin the work of changing our thoughts and our mindset because values are the foundation for our thoughts. We also need to understand what is most important to us before we enter into commitments such as marriage. In most situations, partners need to agree on religion, because it permeates so much of our lives. if one’s partner thinks your beliefs don’t make sense, it will be hard to connect with them or make decisions together. How do we determine what our core values are? One good indicator of a value is that one get into fights with people about it. Maybe it’s punctuality, finances, politics, religion, expectations, or your definition of success. Pay attention to what makes you angry, and then ask why. What is the reason behind your strong emotion? Is it respect? Safety? Exploration of the values handed down to you by your family of origin is an important part of the process of individuation. If you want to know what your values are, you must find out if you really agree with what you were taught as a child. Your parents might not approve,, but if the rules you live by do not sit well in your soul, you will might not find the happiness you seek. You might even have a meltdown and end up questioning everything anyway, so you might as well do the work now, before you fall apart. Therapy is a great place to find out who you are and how to grow to live without compromising your values. Finding the right therapist can be a challenge, especially if you are not aware of what your values are. If your therapist does not believe that your values are important, it will be hard for you to make progress. Don’t despair - keep looking until you find someone who aligns with what is important to you. At the end of this episode, Dr. Karin and I discuss the power of positive mindset practices. We have both personally improved our lives so drastically by making simple changes like taking time for gratefulness and choosing to smile. We have committed to staying mentally healthy, and to do that, we need a positive outlook. You can find a lot of information on this topic in other episodes of Hope to Recharge. Borderline Personality disorder is often stigmatized and rarely mentioned in public circles as a topic of discussion. There is much shame around it and those diagnosed with it often keep it clandestine and private so as not to be exposed for the darkness they carry within them. Dr. Kobernick is a licensed clinical psychologist and the Founder and Director of The CBT/DBT Center. DBT stands for Dialectical Behavior Therapy which is a "behavior therapy". She helps patients target behaviors in order to affect how they are feeling. The additional layer here is Dialectics - which is a type of philosophy that states that there are always multiple truths and more than one way of looking at something in our world. This is important because it helps us to see the grays rather than getting stuck in the black and white. Having big emotions is a wonderful thing. People with big emotions can be the best artists, musicians, lovers, parents and nurturers. But, those emotions need to be navigated with the right skills and tools. Learning mindfulness and how to listen to her emotions helped Dr. Kobernick in her own childhood with big emotions. The two elements that Dr. Kobernick focuses on when she treats patients with DBT are acceptance and change. So, the way it works is at any given moment a patient needs to accept reality as it is and they are working towards change in their lives. They both - acceptance and change - need to exist. You cannot push for change if you are not in acceptance. Thank you for listening to Hope to Recharge! if we are important to you, help us out and Leave us a review on iTunes. How would you like to RECEIVE support? How do you GIVE support? We have experienced a lot of loss this year, which is causing us to dig deep and learn what support truly means and the variety of ways we FEEL supported. We have to be careful to not only be there for someone in the way that WE want to be supported (and maybe even trying to run in and fix things) but learn how to support someone in a way that is helpful for them. How do we do this? By simply asking…. We hope this conversation encourages you to simply show up for those around you and if you are the one who needs support, we hope that you know we are here for you. How do you position yourself as an expert in your work? Imposter syndrome can catch hold of us and keep us second-guessing whether we have the knowledge and skills for the job we are in or are trying to get into. In today’s episode, I sit down with Ashley Asshire who empowers women towards taking meaningful action in life and career. She sits down and talks about how to leverage our imposter syndrome to our advantage. She explains that when we experience those self-doubts, they are actually red flags for us to take a step back and evaluate whether we are at the right place that aligns with our skillset. She encourages us to evaluate our environment and not just go with the flow or do things the way we’ve always done them. Ashley talks about how we need to breathe life into our work and what we are skilled at accomplishing. -- Topics Discussed: How to evaluate whether we are in the right job. Lisa Wells is raising a son with Borderline Personality Disorder. As a little boy, her child was diagnosed with ADHD. He was throwing furniture, had to be taken out of school and went through all kinds of treatment. He endured a lot of ridicule, punishment, and rejection from school staff for not behaving in the way they expected. Lisa assumes this contributed to the trauma which led to him to develop BPD and an older teen. Lisa shared with me her strategies for staying afloat while her son is drowning. One of the components needed to able to care for your loved one’s high-needs is to realize that you can't be available for them 24/7. You are human too, and if you don't take care of yourself, you won't have anything left to give. This can be terrifying because there are so many “what if’s” and lack of control when you don't do everything that they need. In the long run, if you both want to enjoy your life more and be able to be available without burning out, you cannot place all of the responsibility for their survival on yourself. You sometimes have to let go, and that's okay. Another major strategy Lisa utilizes on a daily basis, is to recognize and measure her physical and emotional capacity to help somebody else. If her son is calls her on the phone, Lisa will pause and take notice if she has at least 50% of her capability to deal with whatever situation might be. If she's already feeling overwhelmed by other things in life -- lacking sleep, the dog barking, and she's involved in getting something done, she takes a “self-care break”, works on her mindset to bring herself back up to at least 50%, and then chooses to reach out and support her son. Lisa has come to realize that the best way to help her son is simply using the practice of radical acceptance. No judgement. If he's only wearing one shoe, she won’t say something negative or critical, but just rolls with it. If he really wants some cigarettes, she will actually go buy them for him. If she shows up in his space, and it is clear that he really just needs to be left alone, she leaves. Fighting against whatever is going on in his life that isn't immediately life-threatening only makes him feel criticized, which can be a big trigger. Lisa chooses to believe that he's doing the best he can, and doesn't push him to be anyone besides who he is in that moment. She communicates her boundaries with her son. When he has a meltdown, she will calmly say that she will not tolerate being yelled at. When a conversation starts to go off track, she will clearly tell him that she's not leaving forever; she just really needs to go get dinner on the table or do some other task, and she will call him again in a couple hours when they both have had time to regroup. Because so much that happens in his life seems like an emergency, it can be hard for him to understand how his mom could choose to not help him in his seemingly desperate situation, but she is working to help him understand that she is a person too, and her needs are just as legitimate as his own. Lisa relates how funny he is and how good he is at the things he's passionate aboutand often invites him over to help her with a project and delights in seeing how he finds the quickest and most efficient way to solve the problem she has presented him with. He loves to help out others. If he has a few extra dollars, he’ll go give it to a homeless person because he knows what it is like to be on the street. He loves being encouraging and making jokes with his neighbors and those around him. BPD is not all darkness. Those suffering from it are full of light… just often not for themselves. Have you ever been in a relationship where you see warning signs but don’t act on them? For instance maybe you see jealousy, anger, or disrespect. Sometimes we can push those things off and tell ourselves that we can change them, or they were just having a bad day. But we have to realize that when people show us those glimpses of who we are, we have to take them at face value and believe them. No one has constant bad days, and we need to recognize that these are reoccurring tendencies and cut ties. Often we will work really hard to put up with a lot of things in a relationship, especially early on because we want to make things work. But decide to choose yourself first, and to get rid of relationships that do not serve you. In the end you will be glad you did. When you first remove people from your life, it may hurt and it may be painful, but remember that by keeping them in your life you are doing yourself a disservice. Ask yourself if the other person is giving you love, grace, and respect in return, and if they are not, then accept it and cut ties. -- Topics Discussed: When you discover who someone really is. When Brina and Paul began to date, he was magnetic and charming. They had a connection from the first moment together having a drink. People at work had complained about Paul, saying he was aggressive and difficult. Brina never witnessed that side of him until about 6 months into their relationship, after Paul had too much to drink at a party. Not long after, Paul was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder, after having been together almost 4 years and they had just gotten engaged. Brina knows every side of him, so when he begins to act in unexpected or scary ways, she is able to see the hurting child within, who just wants to be loved. Often, his emotions and expressions don’t match. He might be feeling happy, but he displays anger, because he breaks things. If he’s feeling angry, he displays deep sadness, sobbing. With the help of therapists, Brina has learned how to help him communicate his emotions and needs and to accept and honor her needs as well. She has learned to communicate clearly with him what her plans and boundaries are, so that he feels less abandoned when she needs to do something “without him”. I asked Brina if she ever feels guilty for triggering a mental health episode in Paul’s life. She explained to me how she understands that she is not responsible for the emotional response Paul might have to a choice that she has made. However, if she knows that something is likely to trigger him, she feels that she does have a responsibility, to at least prepare to make that choice, in the safest way possible. If Paul ever feels that Brina has knowingly hurt him, or vice versa, together, they choose a time when they can both calmly have a conversation about what happened. Brina shared with me how much Paul has given to her and changed her life for the better. He is fun, energetic, and brilliant. When Brina comes up with a hair-brained idea, he takes it as an intellectual challenge and figures out how to make it happen. Paul is able to draw her out of her shell, in ways she never thought possible. Without him, she might never have felt comfortable being on a podcast like this! Despite all the challenges, Paul has given her confidence and permission to dream of her own success. Hannah Galliers has navigated through her journey with Borderline Personality Disorder, known in the United Kingdom as Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder (EUPD). Although Hannah's official diagnosis with BPD was recent, she has been on a healing journey through meditation and mindfulness practices and other therapies for several years. As with many people with BPD, she grew up in a broken environment where she was not allowed to process emotion. In college, she faced recovery from sexual assault, and shortly after, one of her best friends passed away. The realization that the path she was walking might lead to her death, pushed her to seek support for her mental health. It has taken years for Hannah to finally receive the official diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder. Her upbeat demeanor and lack of skills to recognize and communicate her feelings kept the depth of her struggle from being recognized by both herself and the professionals she interacted with. Finally, when she got in to see a psychiatrist about a possible ADHD diagnosis, that doctor redirected her to BPD. Unfortunately, the best-known treatment for this disorder (DBT) is not readily available in England, so Hannah has not yet begun that course. The practices that have served her best in coping with BPD have been placing consistent structure in her day, reflecting on her long-term progress, and keeping her mindset open and positive. Hannah started this journey without a lot of support, but as she has chosen to be open about her struggles and work hard to feel better, she found the love of her life. She and her partner Michael, have a baby and a home and will soon be married. Michael has been very patient with her and been able to recognize when the illness is talking and not his beloved Hannah. Together, they navigated through pregnancy that was made more difficult not only by BPD but also COVID lockdown. Before Michael, she had typical experiences with romantic relationships: the ups and downs, emotional breakups, and instability… but today, there is hope. People like Michael do exist out there, who are willing to communicate, take everything with a grain of salt and a pound of patience, and to keep their loved one with BPD accountable to do what they need to feel better. Debbie DeMarco Bennett grew up in a difficult home situation and moved to foster care as a teen. She went through her own Hell, and chose to go back, to help those who live there. For Debbie, recovery started with a diagnosis. She was hospitalized with dehydration. Because her emotions were so strong, her nerves caused her to throw everything up. Her partner and her best friend came to the E.R. and told her, that if she didn’t figure out what was causing these emotional responses and get help, they would abandon her. She told the hospital staff what her mental state was. The psychiatrist recognized some of her symptoms, did a diagnostic checklist, and diagnosed her with BPD. Debbie was relieved that there was a name for what she was experiencing, that she wasn’t the only one, and that the doctor had given her this hope: there was a treatment created specifically for people with her disorder called Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and their hospital had groups where she could go through the skills training course. As she began recovery, Debbie started writing a blog and created a Twitter account where she processed and documented what she learned. Her hope, was that another human might read her account and relate to her story. Soon, she had thousands of followers and messages pouring in from readers, many of whom were asking how they could access a therapy group. She realized she could offer them the hope that she had found, and started DBT Path. Now, dozen staff members later, they are able to offer DBT groups and other supports to people who are currently struggling in the same way she had been just a few years ago. There is hope for those with Borderline Personality Disorder and their communities. People with BPD have often been through horrific amounts of trauma and just may be some of the strongest people alive. They are waiting to be given a chance to heal, improve their lives, and contribute all the good they have to offer to their communities. People with BPD are so often immediately dismissed as a “hopeless case” or rejected and feared because of their unexpected behaviors. The stigma around this diagnosis is stronger than of almost any other mental illness. However, with education and proof of recovery, that stigma is slowly lifting. As people are able to find the right support system and persevere towards healing, the illness is not as destructive. We are still fighting against the pandemic, social injustices and the “new normal”, life can be extremely stressful right now. So what do we do when we begin to get overwhelmed emotionally? We have to take a step back and recharge ourselves. There are several ways to do this. From shutting down our electronics for a few hours or a day to refocus and bring our normalcy back. Other ways we can recharge our batteries are taking power naps that are limited to twenty minutes or less. Another great way to focus on resetting our minds is taking a staycation or going out for the day and doing something we enjoy. This needs to be scheduled in and we need to place priority on it, otherwise we won’t do it. Have you ever felt that you were taking on the responsibility of someone else’s wrong? This could be from a partner, a friend, or a coworker. It is easy to feel like it is our fault. Sometimes this is because the other person is gas lighting us or making us feel guilty ourselves, or sometimes the other person is outright pointing the blame on us. But regardless of why we are shouldering this weight that is not ours to carry, we have to examine why we are accepting this responsibility. Sometimes we have to step back and take a look at what is going on. Where is our mindset at? Are we walking in confidence and are we sure we are in the right? If so then we need to have a shift in our thinking which will result in a change in our words and actions. We should not accept blame for something that we did not have a part in. Sometimes others can pressure us into circumstances that are false. The only thing you should be taking accountability for is your own actions, thoughts, and words. How are you responding to situations, how are you reacting, or not reacting? Be authentic with yourself and have a hard but necessary conversation with yourself to determine where you are at. -- Topics Discussed: Taking on the responsibility of others’ wrongdoings. Have you ever struggled to communicate? Maybe it was with a loved one, a friend, or a work partner. One of the biggest problems I see is difficulty in communication. This starts in childhood. Boys typically are told to shake it off and ignore pain if they get hurt. This teaches boys from a young age to stop their emotional growth, which they then carry into their adulthood. It is so important to understand that we need to be vulnerable. It is okay to admit that we don’t know how to be vulnerable. Vulnerability allows us to feel, and understand the emotions inside of us, rather than ignoring them. It is important so that we can talk to one another in a positive way and to be able to have confrontation in a healthy manner. Being sensitive is not a bad thing. We have to get rid of the stigmatism that comes with allowing ourselves to feel and be emotional beings. Mental health is a part of who we are and we have to start taking it seriously and accepting the importance of it. -- Topics Discussed: The difficulty with communication. Within the next 24 hours, more than 3,000 teenagers in the United States will attempt to take their own lives. Seventeen of them will succeed. Jackie Simmons' daughter, Stephanie, shared that statistic when delivering a speech which would change lives and inspire teens to come together with Stephanie's sisters and to create, "The Teen Suicide Prevention Society." When Stephanie was 14, she attempted suicide for the first time. Over the next several years, her mother placed her in different types of treatment programs, but never spoke with her directly about what she was going through. When Stephanie stood up and gave that speech, Jackie realized her huge mistake. Her daughter suggested to the audience, the solution to teen suicidality was prevention, not intervention, and that kids should be talked to about mental health, suicide, and strategies to deal with any difficulties they encounter before they were having a problem with it. That is the basis of their society. Today, they train people to be emotionally and mentally resilient and provide tools to talk with loved ones about suicide, before it appears to be a problem. Those who join the Teen Suicide Prevention Society receive a script on talking with their teens about suicide, tools to learn about where they stand, and to learn skills in mental and emotional resilience, and support from trained and professional staff. Joining is free, and access to most of the programs they offer are also free of charge. Do you feel like it’s almost impossible to find that “one” to spend your life with? It can be overwhelming in this day and age and the pandemic is not helping things either. Whether you are in the dating game or looking to get into it, it’s oftentimes an overwhelming place. In this episode, I sit down with Kiaundra Jackson who specializes in relationship therapy. We discuss setting clear standards from the get-go in a relationship and how to spot red flags and not sugar coat them. We also discuss the things that truly matter in a relationship and how to get past the shallow things that in the long run do not matter. We talk about knowing who you are and knowing what season you are in and what specifically you are looking for in a relationship. Approaching it with this knowledge is so helpful to then determine whether you should even entertain someone. On the flip side of that, we talk about how often there are people we can easily discount for small reasons but who maybe we need to not shut the door on them. -- Topics Discussed: Dealing with the fear of being alone forever. Why you should never settle in a relationship. The importance of knowing yourself in a relationship. Coming to the understanding of what really matters in a relationship. -- Connect with us! I had the privilege of talking with Avremi Gourarie about the life of his daughter Yocheved, her struggle with an eating disorder, depression and her heartbreaking recent death. On December 22, 2020, 24 year old Yocheved took her own life. Yocheved was a kind and thoughtful person. Loved by all. She was a top student, always maintaining perfect grades in school and at the time of her passing, was in the process of applying to PHD nursing programs. Posthumously, the family learned that she was accepted at Columbia University in their DNP program on track to becoming a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. Unfortunately, her battle with mental illness raged, and she succumbed to it, not having fulfilled her dreams. Avremi shared with me all that their family had done to support Yocheved throughout her struggle. She attended a Modern Orthodox High School, which was less restrictive than the Chabad school that she had previously attended. They assembled a therapy team, which included a stint at a residential facility specializing in eating disorders. Family and friends provided the needed financial support and other provisions so they could focus on helping her life improve. The day of Yocheved's death came as a surprise to Avremi, who thought she was being supervised and making progress. The Gouraries and their community are still grieving, processing, and continuing to learn more about mental health issues as they ask themselves the hard questions - What happened? Avremi and I touched on so many important topics in this episode that we could not cover in such a short time. Stay tuned for more episodes covering such subjects of being the parent of a child battling mental illness, siblings of kids with mental illness, and how to balance religion with necessary treatments. Mental health in the sports industry, specifically for female athletes leaves much to be desired. It is no wonder when we evaluate the disparity between males and females in this industry. For example, girls in high-school are twice as likely to drop out of sports by the age of fourteen. This number increases as you go through high-school, and also increases in both rural and urban areas. In addition, women’s sports get less than four percent of media coverage. When it comes to pay, both collegiate and professional women athletes receive 15 - 100% less pay than their male counterparts. Not surprisingly, nearly 50% of female athletes suffer from depression and/or anxiety. It’s no wonder when we look at the disparity in this world of sports. We have to address the unfair compensation of women compared to men and we have to look at the psychological and mental effects this is causing in women athletes and mitigate the stigma that surrounds mental health, especially in the athletic world. -- Topics Discussed: The disparity between male and female athletes. Bracha Goetz walks us through her journey to finding purpose in her life. Her search began at age 12 when she started wondering what the point of anything was and feeling very empty inside. She thought there must be more to life than what those around her do and expected her to do. She began her struggle with food, experimented with drugs and sought out religions and philosophical schools of thought. As an adult in medical school, Bracha came upon a Jewish school in Israel for those searching for truth and clarity. It was there she encountered the Almighty and found true fulfillment for the first time. Her desire for junk food diminished drastically. Her transformation lay in teachings by Rabbi Noah Weinberg, of Aish HaTorah, called the 5 Pleasures. We must first understand the core truth of creation, that humans were created to find the most pleasure they can on this planet. There are five basic levels of pleasure in the human experience. (1) The physical five senses, the most basic level of pleasure - food, nature, music , etc. (2) Love - appreciation for other human beings. (3) Meaning-- having a reason behind what you do and connecting to your community in a deeper way. (4) Creativity - the joy of creative freedom and using our natural gifts for a purpose. (5) Transcendence, or clarity. When you can perceive and understand truths about God, people and the world around you and about yourself. We typically dwell in levels one through three. Levels four and five are rare, but when we experience them, we never forget them and continue to pursue them. Many people turn to addiction, including disordered eating, because they have not reached higher levels of pleasure and purpose. Almost all addiction is seated in the first level - the physical. When not fulfilled in the higher levels or not finding spiritual connection in the physical world, we seek more and more pleasure in the lower levels. Unfortunately, those pursuits can never provide what we seek. If you have trouble finding joy and purpose in your life, try some of the exercises suggested by Bracha. Try noticing small things that are pleasurable to you. For instance, focus on an orange and notice its color, fragrance, texture, flavor - and any other pleasurable details. Connecting to what you eat the way it was intended, is a spiritual experience, which will deeply connect you to the universe and to your creator. If you have experienced emotional trauma, it will be challenging, but don’t give up. If you find yourself doing something unhealthy, pause. Try switching activities. Dance around the house. Interact with other humans. Go outside. Then come back to that bag of chips and see if you still desire them as strongly. Oftentimes, you will find you were not truly feeding your soul, only your temporary, physical pleasure sensors. If you do finish that bag of chips, observe how you feel afterwards. Do you feel more whole? More clear and purposeful? Grateful? Or did it make you feel bad about yourself? We hope you take the time to find pleasure in the "small things". What do you do? In this episode I want to talk about how we celebrate ourselves. We are very good at celebrating and supporting others but what do we do for ourselves? March is women’s month so this is a great time to talk about pampering ourselves, something we often put on the back burner and ignore as we take care of those around us. But what do you do to take care of yourself? I really want to challenge you to place yourself as a priority and carve out some time for you. Whether this is a staycation, sitting down with a book that you’ve been meaning to read for awhile, or having a spa day. Regardless of what you do, you need to make time for you. Stress can really affect us, whether it’s from the pandemic, or whether you were affected by the extreme cold weather, or maybe just the day to day of taking care of your family, career, etc. So I really want to challenge you to celebrate yourself once a month. It doesn’t have to be something fancy, but just carve out some time to treat yourself and show yourself that you matter. -- Topics Discussed: Making Time for you. What it looks like to celebrate yourself. Why we need to make time to show ourselves love amidst stressful times. -- Connect with us! We are back after having taking February off. Many incredible things happened over the course of this month. A distant friend sent me a book on "Nishmat", the very prayer I try to practice each morning. Several other friends and acquaintances also sent gifts and notes that went exactly in line with what I was doing. Speaking engagements also fell into line. Simply pursuing what one wants, sends energy out into the universe that leads people to (unknowingly) do things for us. Taking time off allows us to pursue what our hearts truly desire and love to do. Speaking to those in need feeds my soul, and because I had cleared my schedule, I was able to take on several last-minute engagements. The long lasting snowstorms made me yearn for summer but also reminds me that time heals. As winter will eventually come to an end, hard times in life won’t last forever. When struggling with having to wear so many layers of clothing to keep warm in the bitter cold days, I picture the day that is coming: the day when I'll be able to throw on flip flops and run out the door into the sun. That imagery gives hope and a smile about the future, which helps us to endure the present. We can know that whatever season we are in won’t last for the rest of our lives. Something better is coming, and if we focus on that, we can smile and keep going. Silence has been proven to be important for success. In the silence, the issues we are hiding from come up, and we have to deal with them. If we continue to pretend they don’t exist, we will never grow. We also need time to rest, to recharge, and to reflect on who we are and what we are doing and why. We need time to remember what will feed our souls. Rather than getting caught up in the hurricane of life and doing what we’re told, stop. Think. What do you actually want to do? Taking a break is so important in so many ways. We should all find a way to do so regularly. Give yourself that gift. You deserve it. In today’s episode, I dive into how we handle life when we are burned out and how we can show up. I want to touch on three points. The first being your mental health. Maybe you feel off-kilter, maybe you are just struggling with feeling "all there". The second topic is your physical health. Whether it’s something chronic, or you are having joint issues or just not feeling yourself. We can sometimes put stress on ourselves that we still have to just push through it. The third thing I dive into is your business health, whether you are going to work in the workplace or running your own business how do you find enough to give when you are drained and feel like you have nothing left to give? These are hard questions that we often have to deal with. Even if they are not everyday issues we still all struggle with these “down” days. We have to recognize that we are feeling this way and not put pressure on ourselves to over-perform but to take into account both our physical and mental health because it is so important for our overall well-being. -- Topics Discussed: Showing up in life when you are not feeling yourself.
