But there's an entire world to consider before going serverless that most of us forget about - business operations. Aside from shifting ownership from hardware to software, you also have roles that need reassignment, an organizational culture to shift, and much more. Join Allen and Benjamen as the two dive into the subject and offer lessons learned from personal experiences in their careers. Today I talked to Alda Benjamen about his book Assyrians in Modern Iraq: Negotiating Political and Cultural Space (Cambridge UP, 2021) Examining the relationship between a strengthened Iraqi state under the Baʿth regime and the Assyrians, a Christian ethno-religious group, Benjamen studies the role of minorities in twentieth-century Iraqi political and cultural history. Relying on extensive research in Iraq, including sources uncovered at the Iraqi National Archives in Baghdad, as well as in libraries and private collections in Erbil, Duhok, and Mosul, in Arabic and modern Aramaic, Benjamen foregrounds the Iraqi periphery as well as the history of bilingualism to challenge the monolingual narrative of the state. By exploring the role of Assyrians in Iraq's leftist and oppositional movements, including gendered representations of women, she demonstrates how, within newly politicized urban spaces, minorities became attracted to intellectual and political movements that allowed them to advance their own concerns while engaging with other Iraqis of their socio-economic background and relying on transnational community networks. Assyrian intellectuals not only negotiated but also resisted government policies through their cultural production, thereby achieving a softening of Baʿthist policies towards the Assyrians that differed markedly from those of later repressive eras. King Bemjamen is getting very old. He wants to appoint his son Mosiah to be the new king. He has all the people gather at the temple and he has a large tower built so he can speak from the top and all his people can hear. They place their tents with the doors facing him to hear his words. It was a lot like our general conference!
In this episode, I welcome my mentor Ben, a software engineer at Bliss Point Media. he shares his story, how he got to where he is today both his struggles and triumphs. You also get to hear about his family and how they have molded him to be the amazing human being he is today. Tune in.
In this episode, Chris talks with Benjamen Janey, owner and operator of Spooler, a tech-driven apparel company that combines fashion and technology to help consumers take control of the clothes they wear. Entrepreneurship is in Benjamen's blood. When his mother saw students at her school face serious consequences for graffiti, she founded a non-profit to help young people express themselves artistically without repercussions. Benjamen started his business as a grassroots creator, creating custom pieces by hand for the tourists, locals, and celebrities of Venice Beach. After a successful test market in Venice, he continued to validate the need for on-demand clothing and fashion by integrating new technology and formed Spooler. In 2018, Benjamen landed a partnership with Sesame Street to develop an activewear product targeting the health & wellness market, and socially-conscious millennials who likely grew up watching the beloved show. Chris and Benjamen discuss why failure is required, learning to scale, and the future of technology in wellness, business, and beyond. “These adversities that we're going to explore a little bit here, or challenges or hurdles or however you want to phrase them, they are part of the journey. In many ways, they are just as important as the successes, if not more important than the successes.” ~ @BenjamenJaney Main takeaways [12:09] Hiring team members can save you invaluable time and money as a business owner. Finding the right fit can be tricky, but outsourcing early is worth it. [13:08] Technology is helping fashion transform into a direct-to-consumer industry where consumers have control over the materials used in the clothes they love. [16:01] It's ok to fail immediately and frequently. Failure is what helps you learn and move your business forward. Don't get discouraged if you're in a tough spot. Dream Job Ready Episode 06: Benjamen McGrath (Job Seeker, ex Vodafone, Twentieth Century Fox) I worked with Ben at Rip Curl around 10 years ago and he’s also had dream jobs with Vodafone, Twentieth Century Fox and in the advertising agency scene. Benny is currently unemployed and job seeking though, after recently being made redundant due to a company takeover, so I interviewed him to find out just how someone prepares and deals with that setback when they’re chasing a dream job. The timing of this interview couldn’t have been more coincidently relevant. The COVID-19 crisis has rocked small and large business, and has led to millions of lost jobs all over the world. This interview took place in February, so we weren’t aware of Coronavirus at that point and hence we don’t discuss it in the interview. We do however talk plenty about dealing with job loss, managing redundancy, recruiters and staying ready for the next opportunity that presents itself. This hour we head back in time to 1984. [Listen to the full show here http://bit.ly/1vNkzgC] 1984 (the year not the book) by Benjamen Walker (Benjamen Walker's Theory of Everything, 2014) In the book 1984, George Orwell predicted that in the future "Big Brother" would watch and dictate our every move. In the year 1984, producer Benjamen Walker was in middle school. Like Orwell's protagonist Winston Smith, Benjamen kept a diary for "future citizens" in which he recorded the country's descent into totalitarianism — and his crush on a girl named Theresa. In 2014, he revisited those diaries and produced this sonic catapult to the days of Reagonomics, Thriller, Clara Peller and the birth of Apple. What would Benjamen's 12-year-old self think about the 42-year-old's documentary? Find out in Behind the Scenes.
