This off-the-cuff interview with Robert Schneider, which went down spontaneously after our Strawberry Alarm Clock conversation concluded, unexpectedly became a tidal wave of incredibly moving, impassioned notions about identity and fulfillment. And although it preceded Will Cullen Hart's untimely passing, much of it seems to pre-empt the tragic event lying in wait just around the bend. Here's just a few of the many things Robert and I discuss in this podcast: The superfluousness of LSD to the middle-aged brain; The levels of fulfillment Robert gets from music vs. math at this point in his life; The background origin story of the Elephant 6 Enthusiasts Facebook Group; How his musical path will likely look just around the bend; The massive impact Bill Doss's death had on his identity;  And Robert's favorite Apples In Stereo LP. One of our most requested guests returns to the show. It's been nearly eight years since we've caught up with Will Cullen Hart. The Circulatory System/The Olivia Tremor Control front man has spent most of the pandemic focused on his painting. We discuss his artwork -- one of which falls onto his head, as the interview winds down. But our focus is his continued musical work, from some of the earliest Elephant 6 demos, to forthcoming Circulatory output. Ten years ago this July, The Olivia Tremor Control's long-awaited reunion came to a close with the tragic death of Cullen Hart's childhood friend and longtime collaborator, Bill Doss. While the event spelled the end of the group's live performances, many of Doss's contributions to a new record, The Same Place, had already been record. Hart discusses the likelihood of that music seeing the light of day. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Adam Clair was barely out of undergrad when he began the manuscript for Endless Endless: A Lo-Fi History of the Elephant 6 Mystery (Hachette Books, 2022).The book is a definitive history of the 1990s underground musical movement known as the Elephant 6 Collective. Founded by Robert Schneider, Bill Doss, Will Cullen Hart, and Jeff Mangum, who grew up as friends in the small town of Ruston, Louisiana, the Elephant 6 was initially centered around three bands—the Apples in Stereo, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Olivia Tremor Control—whose records were expertly produced in home studios in Denver and Athens, Georgia, by Robert Schneider, who wouldn't mind being referred to as the Brian Wilson-like engineer extraordinaire of the collective. (Schneider is currently a professor of math in Georgia, having earned a PhD in his post-rocker years.)By the late-1990s, the Elephant 6 had exploded onto the musical scene in a way that hasn't really been felt since—their '60s psychedelia-inspired, almost utopian mindset of a better world with their music as the soundtrack was as intoxicating then as it is now.Rock ‘n' Roll stardom was something that seemed to frighten and elude the collective's founders, however, who were more focused on the art of the music than on the business side.By the turn of the century, relentless touring and recording schedules led Neutral Milk Hotel's front man Jeff Mangum to retreat from performing—and even from doing interviews. The Olivia's disbanded for a time, the Apples changed line ups, and the second-generation bands, like Of Montreal and Beulah, began to build their own audiences. In 2013, the original members of Neutral Milk Hotel reunited for a year or two of touring. Then Bill Doss from Olivia Tremor Control passed away suddenly, thwarting their comeback. All the while, Adam Clair was gathering reportage. He conducted over 100 interviews over 13 years to complete Endless Endless. Although the reclusive Jeff Mangum did not speak to him for the book, Clair was able to carve in Mangum's voice from past interviews (more than I remember taking place, having been around to see it unfold in real time the first time around). Clair and I spoke recently about Endless Endless and how it came to be. Tune in for all the details. For the Reading this episode, Adam Clair reads from his introduction to Endless Endless.Music by The Olivia Tremor Control

SUPPORT MUSIC IS NOT A GENRE ON PATREON WATCH MUSIC is not a GENRE VIDEOS and MORE I love the whole idea of a music collective. It's pretty much how musicians work anyway. We all bounce between projects and help out each other. We all influence and inspire each other. But very few musicians have had the guts to create an actual collective, and of those, Elephant 6 was by far the most innovative, successful & influential. They were founded in the late 1980s, but really took hold in the 1990s and early 2000s. E6 (which no one calls it) spawned well over 30 bands, of which at least four – The Apples in Stereo, The Olivia Tremor Control, Neutral Milk Hotel, and of Montreal – have had notable success and influence, especially on bands like Franz Ferdinand, Arcade Fire & Tame Impala. I'd argue they've done more to shape the indie scene of this entire young century than any other music. With so many bands, their sound is naturally all over the map. But their core elements stem mostly from the mod/psychedelic/chamber rock/pop of the mid to late 1960s. Think middle period Beatles, Pet Sounds &Smile, the Zombies. Mix that with ‘90s indie rock, alt pop & some synths, and you get … something really weird and really catchy. Also really weird. And very easy to listen to. And weird. If you don't know any of this music, start with the Olivia Tremor Control. No single E6 band represents their whole aesthetic, but Olivia Tremor Control comes closest. I was disappointed when they disbanded too soon, and sad when Bill Doss, their main driving force (and also the founder of the Sunshine Fix), died so young. Hit up their “singles and beyond” collection, and you'll be instantly drawn in. Then move on to the Apples in Stereo. To me they created the most complete and most accessible amalgamation of all of the above styles. They also released way more music and had probably the most hit singles. I don't know as much about of Montreal, except that they are the more ambient & synth-y incarnation of the Elephant 6 sound, and the most modern sounding. They've also lasted the longest & released the most music, which has been much more ubiquitous than any of the other bands' music. As for Neutral Milk Hotel, I know next to nothing about them. I was happy to see their album, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, representing E6 on the Rolling Stone top 500. They had kind of a freak folk vibe. And if you listen to Arcade Fire or bands like that, you will hear a huge influence. Speaking of … So much of music creation is about “permission” and “implant”. An artist comes out who does something unorthodox or otherwise out of place, and a part of the creative mind says, “You're allowed to do that?!?” Those new or newly contextualized ideas get implanted, and influence what comes next. A whole lot of my work has been tinged with indie/mod/psychedelic/synth/alt pop – released and unreleased. (Latter case in point: https://soundcloud.com/recarea/3-sample.) Here are two recently released examples, one more mod/retro/synth & the other more indie/psychedelic: REC – “Sparkle Shine Shine” (from the album, The Sunshine Seminar) REC – “The Accumulate” (from the album, Symphony for the Weird) Have you heard any of this music? Have you even heard of the collective or any of these bands? Are there other Elephant 6 bands you prefer? Discuss dammit! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nick-dematteo/support

They all shared music cassettes in their younger days and made music together. Jim McIntyre and Hilarie Sydney of Apples in Stereo made up the final tally. They all started several pet projects which ended up under the umbrella of Elephant 6. Doss and Hart with The Olivia Tremor Control, Mangum with Neutral Milk Hotel and Schneider with Apples in Stereo. Collectively they held admiration for music from the 1960s. In particular The Beach Boys, often stating the then unfinished Smile as "The Holy Grail". Mangum disbanded Neutral Milk Hotel after an extensive European tour in 1998 cited ill health as one of the reasons. His bandmates were keen to capitalise on the albums success. However, Mangum was tired of performing and explaining his lyrics. Because of this Mangum turned down an opportunity to open for R.E.M. Mangum suffered a nervous breakdown at the time. Interviewed in 2002 he stated that it was unlikely that he would record as Neutral Milk Hotel in the future. I just feel like these windows open up for something to be honest, and they don't stay open for very long. I guess my path feels sort of different nowJeff Mangum speaking to Pitchfork in February 2002 In the Aeroplane Over the Sea - sophomore album from Neutral Milk Hotel Whilst working on the album Avery Island he read The Diary of a Young Girl. The diary written by Anne Frank whilst in hiding from the Nazi occupation. The diary was famously and posthumously published to great acclaim. Mangum was deeply affected by the diary, he spent "about three days crying" after reading it. He also dreamed of travelling back in time to save her. The track Ghost played here was a reference to Frank and to a ghost Mangum believed lived in his house. He believed the ghost kept waking him in the night. Oh Comely (8+ minutes) was recorded in one take. At the end of the track you can hear an astonished bandmate cry "Holy shit" in amazement. On the final track, Two Headed Boy Part II, Mangum can be heard setting down his guitar and walking away. At the end of Aeroplane's final song, you can hear Jeff Mangum [...] set down his guitar and walk off, and [...] that's exactly what Mangum did in real lifeSlate Other avenues to explore Get brilliant music/TV/film based t-shirts hereCheck out where our Listeners are around the globe hereTake a look at what our Listeners are saying hereSupport our work hereGet social on Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr and Facebook

On today's show, I talk to musician Will Cullen Hart. Will grew up all over the US, but it was living in Louisiana that truly made him who he is, because that's where he met Bill Doss, Jeff Mangum and Robert Schneider and formed the Elephant Six Recording Company, as well as The Olivia Tremor Control with Doss. It's not hyperbole to say that the bands that were part of Elephant Six: Neutral Milk Hotel, The Apples in Stereo, the aforementioned OTC, as well as other bands like Of Montreal, Beulah and Elf Power came to define a generation of music-listeners. After OTC broke up, Will formed psyche-pop band The Circulatory System, and while it was revealed in 2008 that he suffers from multiple sclerosis, this has not slowed him down - his latest album Mosaics Within Mosaics was released earlier this year, and it is wonderful.
