Rundown -    Intro with Troubadour Dave Gunders - 00:35   "If G-d Was Watching" by Dave Gunders - 22:43   Tom Carter - 27:38   Outro - 01:47:58   Tom Carter was a Washington Times international reporter for decades. After that, he worked for several years with Leonard Leo. The experience was not pleasant. Neither is Leonard Leo, an Ivy League-trained lawyer who has dedicated his life's work to creating an ultra-conservative Catholic judiciary.   Leonard Leo is a true believer with massive money and power. Learn about his Opus Dei connections, those who've been converted, like GOP VP nominee JD Vance, and his relationship with Trump. We identify the true believers in the US Supreme Court and others aligned with Trump, Leo, and Opus Dei.   Carter was raised an Anglican Christian and discusses the Opus Dei concept of Eternity and how they target converts and view other religions. Do the ends justify the means? Is this a Holy War? A resurrection of the Spanish Inquisition? Learn Leo's plans for the rest of us.   Troubadour Dave Gunders brings his apropos song, "If G-d Was Watching," to discus Kamala Harris' ascendency, and Simone Biles' Olympic statement. Simone Biles's heroism and X-post were reviewed and commended. So is the return of the Russian-held American hostages.   Given the sudden death of Ismail Haniyeh, the host recounts his 12-12-06 Denver radio interview with former President Jimmy Carter, who was promoting his book titled Palestine, Peace, Not Apartheid. The interview devolved, causing 14 members of the Carter Center to resign. https://www.foxnews.com/story/fox-facts-carter-board-of-councilors-resignation-letter

Unborn archaeologists thank you! This week I speak with two of the most thoughtful people I know in tech, cyborg anthropologist Amber Case and systems engineer Michael Zargham (Founder & CEO of BlockScience) — who work together on tools for building trust between tech users and tech companies at the Superset DAO and each contribute diverse value to society through myriad creative projects in their own right (like Amber's totally fabulous music group Glo Torch!). This episode only catches a tiny sliver of the awesome conversations that we had while gathered face-to-face, but it's a potent morsel nonetheless. We talked about the market's perverse fascination with talking appliances as a failed attempt to reboot animism, how good design empowers and bad design deprives by making choices possible or not, and why it's time for a new kind of terms-of-service agreement that allows users to migrate en masse from platforms that have violated people's trust…along with much else. Traversing the Redline

The High Route Podcast

There are some foundational values here at The High Route. Right at the top of the list is inspiring backcountry travelers to dream big adventures, and when the time is right, go out and have that adventure. Adventure has gradients, and this might seem like a tangent, but it's worthwhile—there was a 94-year-old at the climbing gym this afternoon. He's a regular. And it certainly looked like he was owning his adventure pulling plastic. So, there is time to learn, get fit, and push the comfort zone just enough to make something happen. This is all in the spirit of today's podcast, where we speak with some fine folks about their experiences on the Redline Traverse in California's Sierras. IFMGA guide Jed Porter completed the Redline in 2017, primarily solo. Spencer Dillon, a law student at the University of Utah, and his partner Matt Skorina maximized the gift of a deep Sierra snowpack to complete their iteration of the Redline in the spring of 2023. As far as high Sierra ski traverses go, the Redline is mythical. The route was first completed in the early 80s by Allan Bard, Tom Carter, and Chris Cox. Several others assisted the endeavor along the way, but Bard, Carter, and Cox had the vision and the moxy to see it through. Traversing south to north, the Redline begins near Whitney Portal outside Lone Pine, California, and terminates at Mammoth. The intent was to stay as high as possible and ski excellent lines. But all this was in the 80s—a time when even military use of GPS was a decade off. In a trip report on his Redline experience, Porter wrote, "Carter and Bard, in the November 1983 issue of Powder magazine, map out the line with the poetry of vision rather than the prose of prescription." That is to say, a point by point, pass to pass, couloir to couloir rendering of the original route isn't, as far as we can tell, publically available. And we're sticking with an originalist interpretation, following Bard's and Carter's and Cox's lead; the route description in this podcast will remain vague. As noted, the intent is to inspire others to go have an adventure. The high Sierra is a vast expanse—the perfect place, when the snow conditions, the fitness, the gear, and a partnership align, to make a go of it. We chat all things Redline with Porter and Dillon from snow to gear to visioning and style. You can learn more about Jed Porter here, and find his Redline Traverse gear list here. You can read Spencer Dillon's story about his trip here, on the Skimo Co blog. Thanks for listening.    You can find us at the-high-route.com. Yeah, there are two hyphens for redundancy, which is a good policy in the mountains. For weight weenies, hyphens weigh next to nothing. We are a reader supported website with free podcasts. Our podcasts are not free to produce or store on a server. If you are enjoying the podcasts, please consider supporting The High Route, you can find subscription information here. The theme music for The High Route Podcast comes from Storms in the Hill Country and the album The Self Transforming (Thank you, Jens Langsjoen). You can find a link to the album here—there are so many good songs on this album. And if you think you've spotted a UFO in the past or visited the 7th dimension, "Beautiful Alien" is a good tune to start with.

The CW Is Shifting Away From Superhero Shows

Geek Freaks Headlines

The CW network is undergoing a significant transformation in its programming lineup, with a notable rollback of its superhero shows that have been a staple for over a decade. During the network's Upfront presentation, Brad Schwartz, The CW's entertainment president, outlined the vision for the future of programming, highlighting a shift away from the superhero genre that helped build the Arrowverse and other series like “Riverdale” and the Nancy Drew reboot. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Schwartz acknowledged that while these shows had been the hallmarks of The CW for a long time, they are no longer resonating with the network's linear viewership. He attributed this change to the fact that the young adult audience no longer makes appointments to watch broadcast television. In an effort to attract a broader audience and increase profitability, The CW aims to go bigger and appeal to older viewers. The move is part of a broader strategy to meet the profit goal set by The CW's new owner, Nexstar Media Group. Nexstar primarily owns local TV stations across the country. Interestingly, Tom Carter, Nexstar's president and chief operating officer, shared in a conference call last August that the average age of the CW broadcast viewer is 58 years, as reported by TV Line. This revelation came just before the network's acquisition by Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global, both of which retain minority stakes in The CW. In the first half of 2022, several shows met an abrupt end, including “Legacies,” “Legends of Tomorrow,” “Batwoman,” the Charmed reboot, and “Dynasty.” Additionally, “Kung Fu,” the Supernatural prequel “The Winchesters,” and “Walker Independence” were also canceled ahead of the May 18 announcement. Last year, it was announced that both “The Flash” and “Riverdale” would conclude with their upcoming final seasons. The fates of “Gotham Knights,” “Superman & Lois,” and “All American: Homecoming” are still uncertain. Schwartz indicated that decisions regarding these shows would come “soon” as the respective companies analyze the costs of producing these “expensive” programs. “We have to be entrepreneurial in the way we look at content,” stated Schwartz. “We can't write a per-episode $10 million check for a show with dragons.” Looking ahead to the 2024 season, Schwartz unveiled upcoming co-productions, including “Joan,” a series starring Sophie Turner as an infamous jewel thief. He also mentioned “The Librarians: The Next Chapter,” a spinoff of the TNT drama, as well as the acquisition of “The Swarm,” a German eco-sci-fi series, and “Sullivan's Crossing,” a Canadian medical drama based on books written by Robyn Carr and starring Chad Michael Murray. Schwartz also expressed excitement about unscripted acquisitions, such as the Max castoff “FBoy Island.” He believes that a bold and impactful unscripted show like “FBoy Island” has the potential to break through and captivate audiences.

Tom Carter is another one of the great people I've met over the years that has influenced Telemark skiing for the better. In the 1970s he moved to the Yosemite Valley and lived and climbed there as part of a new generation of climbers. It was there that he was first introduced to backcountry touring and using early Telemark gear to navigate through the valley and surrounding areas to find untouched powder and use skis for travel. His love for backcountry skiing and traveling in the mountains by way of his Freeheel gear led him and his partner Alan Bard to do big tours in the Eastern Sierra including setting up one of the well-known routes called the red line traverse. He was also a guide for nearly 30 years in the Ruby Mountains of Nevada. He currently lives in Lake Tahoe where he loves to get out on his 3-pin gear and move quickly and efficiently through the mountains. I first interviewed Tom in 2010 as part of my third feature Telemark film called Hippies Punx & Misfits. He's a wealth of knowledge and I love talking to him about his passion for the mountains and his love of Telemark. #ProtectorsOfTheTurn #SpreadTelemark #FreeheelLife #Telemark #TelemarkSkiing #TelemarkSki #Skiing #Ski SIGN UP FOR THE MAILING LIST: https://bit.ly/FHLMailingList Connect with Josh and the Freeheel Life Family  Josh on Instagram and Twitter Telemark Skier Magazine on Instagram, Twitter and YouTube Freeheel Life on Instagram and Twitter Shop The Freeheel Life Telemark Shop    HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT US Shop Telemark at  FREEHEELLIFE.COM Subscribe & Become a Supporter of TelemarkSkier.com for articles, gear reviews, & more!
