"Dreamin' Wild" had its world premiere at last year's Venice Film Festival. It stars Casey Affleck, Noah Jupe, Zooey Deschanel, Walton Goggins, Jack Dylan Grazer, Chris Messina & Beau Bridges and was directed, written, and produced by Bill Pohlad. Dreamin' Wild was the name of a failed and forgotten record from a pair of brothers named Donnie and Joe Emerson. The self produced album, created in a makeshift studio built by their father on their vast family farm, briefly did find some traction in the music industry. It appeared, for a moment at least, that Donnie would have the chance to make it big. That never happened. Then, in 2008, a miracle happened. A man found the record and listened to it and immediately fell in love with it. He became an evangelist for this obscure, late 70s rock record and band. He helped get the record in front of studio executives who were equally enthusiastic about this incredibly obscure record. The record company tracked down Donnie and Joe and after decades of heartbreak over the failure of their record and Donnie's failed dream of being a recording artist, the Emerson Brothers were given the chance to do it all over again. That's the backstory of the new movie, based on the true story, written and directed by Bill Pohlad, the director of another music business masterpiece, Love & Mercy. I was lucky to chat with Bill Pohlad about Dreamin' Wild and getting to the heart of the crossroads between movies and music. Dreamin' Wild will be in limited theatrical release on August 4th and should soon after become available on many streaming rental platforms.
Cade and Diane are joined by the amazing Ava to discuss two films about icons from the 1960's: First Man (2018) and Love & Mercy (2014). Watch the video version at: YouTube.com/@CadeThomas/streams Double Feature Movie Club is a weekly movie review show with a retro vibe. Two movies. Three people. One rambling conversation. Each film is our first time watching them. We often go off-topic. First Man is a 2018 American biographical drama film directed by Damien Chazelle from a screenplay by Josh Singer, based on the 2005 book of the same name by James R. Hansen. The film stars Ryan Gosling as Neil Armstrong, alongside Claire Foy, Jason Clarke, Kyle Chandler, Corey Stoll, Christopher Abbott, and Ciarán Hinds, and follows the years leading up to the Apollo 11 mission to the Moon in 1969. Love & Mercy is a 2014 American biographical drama film directed by Bill Pohlad about the Beach Boys' co-founder and leader Brian Wilson and his struggles with mental illness during the 1960s and 1980s. It stars Paul Dano and John Cusack as the young and middle-aged Wilson, respectively, with Elizabeth Banks as his second wife Melinda Ledbetter and Paul Giamatti as his psychologist Dr. Eugene Landy. The title comes from Wilson's 1988 song.
In this second half of the episode, we look at two major phases of the life of Beach Boys founder Brian Wilson in Love and Mercy, a film from 2014 directed by Bill Pohlad. COMING ATTRACTIONS: In our next episode we spend some time in Dublin, with a pair of films that have many points in common, including one that's led to an interesting theory tying them together. First up is The Commitments, Alan Parker's 1991 film about a band's rise and fall. From there we jump to 2007 to talk about a truly delightful film called Once, written and directed by John Carney, about a week in the life of a pair of struggling musicians, and the songs that underline their relationship. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/wordsandmovies/support
With today's episode drop, we're moving into a new mini-block of themed episodes, all of which involve music in one way or another. And in this episode we start where most people did when it came to music back in the day: in the record shop. This despite the fact that by the time either of these films came out, vinyl was considered a more or less quaint format for music. We begin with 1995's Empire Records, directed by Allan Moyle and starring a lot of people who weren't honest-to-god stars yet, so you'll have a lot of "Ermahgerd, they're such babies here!" and you'd be correct. This is one of those films that takes place over roughly a 24-hour period (probably just a little longer), and a bunch of lives manage to change in a big way during that day. From there we move to High Fidelity (2000), directed by Stephen Frears and starring John Cusack, Iben Hjejle, Jack Black and a couple of surprises here and there. It's a spot-on look at the near-middle-aged man's psyche just before he realizes that he can't keep on doing stuff the way he's been doing it so far. So again, by the end of the film lives change, but it just takes a little longer. COMING ATTRACTIONS: Our next episode is a fun one, as we look at a couple of biographical movies that are presented in a rather unconventional way. We'll start with 2007's I'm Not There, directed by Todd Haynes, and then move on to Love and Mercy from 2014, directed by Bill Pohlad. Interestingly, they have something in common not only with each other, but with the recent Elvis biopic, which hadn't yet been released at the time we recorded that episode. So watch this space for that detail. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/wordsandmovies/support

Have we mentioned that there is a lot of festival news in August? In the last week we've gotten two NYFF sections (Spotlight and Currents) and three full TIFF sections (Documentaries, Contemporary World Cinema, and Shorts) plus a few smaller additions with more to come. Andy and Jesse break it down as we await the final pieces to fall into place with the looming schedule announcements. After that Cullen and Emilio join Andy and the Ghost of Jesse for a discussion of Bill Pohlad's second feature - the bifurcated Brian Wilson biopic LOVE & MERCY, in anticipation of DREAMIN' WILD. The History of Rock N Roll Part XII - Troubled Harmony: Brian Wilson & The Beach Boys This week Mr. Chavez & I continue our exploration into The History of Rock N Roll with a look at one of the seminal bands in the history of Southern California music . . . The Beach Boys. We take a look at the history with a focused look at band co-founder and principal songwriter Brian Wilson. Long heralded as a musical genius, it has been an interesting and compelling look into his life. This week we focus on four documentaries: Malcolm Leo's hagiography The Beach Boys: An American Band (1985), Don Was's Brian Wilson: I Just Wasn't Made for These Times (1995), Brent Wilson's Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road (2021), and Bill Pohlad's 2014 Bio-Pic Love & Mercy featuring Paul Giamatti as psychologist, Dr. Eugene Landy, Elizabeth Banks as Wilson's second wife, Melinda Ledbetter, and as Wilson, Paul Giamatti (as the young Brian Wilson) and John Cusack as the older 1980s Brian Wilson. With the exception of Leon's doc, the films are interesting and thought-provoking regarding artistry, mental illness, and the combination of the two. It's a good talk and we're thrilled to go - a bit - outside of our comfort zone. Thanks for listening. Questions, Comments, Complaints, & Suggestions can be directed to gondoramos@yahoo.com.
We cap the season with (arguably) Paul Dano's greatest performance, as legendary musician, Brian Wilson. On episode 8 of season 3 we were joined by the marvellous Anna Bogutskaya (writer/ broadcaster/ host at Wittertainment, Underwire Festival, The Final Girls and more). A biopic of Brian Wilson had been mooted ever since the late 1980s, but it wasn't until 2014 that Bill Pohlad's Love & Mercy was released, with its bold time-hopping structure that allowed both Paul Dano and John Cusack to play the Beach Boys' chief songwriter. The former played Wilson as he recorded Pet Sounds and his legendary unrealised Smile project, the latter played him as he struggled to escape the control of his abusive quack therapist Eugene Landy. It sounds a bit heavy - and it is - but the soundtrack is full of the most beautiful music ever made. On this week's episode of Pop Screen, Graham is joined by fellow Beach Boys fan Ewan to discuss the film and its clutch of impressive performances, including Bill Camp, Elizabeth Banks and Paul Giamatti as the monstrous Landy. We also discuss the strange circumstances which led to Pet Sounds becoming the definitive Beach Boys album despite having almost no band members play instruments on it, what the best Beach Boys song is, and why Graham's answer to that question is the correct one. Back in February, Bernie and Maurice were joined by Frank Santopadre and Tish Grier to discuss Bill Pohlad's 2015 biopic on Brian Wilson, Love And Mercy for episode 25 of See Hear. In April, Maurice interviewed Darian Sahanaja (Wondermints and Brian Wilson Band) for Love That Album episode 89 on the final day of Brian's 2016 tour of Australia. The last part of the interview featured a discussion about Darian's work as musical consultant on Love And Mercy. With Tim and Bernie's blessing, Maurice thought it would be a good idea to present this segment as a bonus episode of See Hear. Darian coached the brilliant Paul Dano to play piano in a style similar to Brian, and came up with the idea to use real musicians rather than actors to play The Wrecking Crew as they recorded Pet Sounds. Listen to Darian discuss the creative process in his work on the film. If this short discussion has you interested to hear more, look out for episode 89 of Love That Album podcast to hear a whole lot more about Darian and his activities. This week on StoryWeb: Bill Pohlad’s film “Love and Mercy.” Virtually all of us know and recognize any number of hits by the Beach Boys: “Fun, Fun, Fun,” “Surfin’ U.S.A.,” and perhaps most of all, “Good Vibrations.” Somewhat less well known is the name of Brian Wilson, the genius behind the Beach Boys sound and the band’s enormous success. Say you’ve seen a film about Brian Wilson, and some folks will look at you with a bit of confusion. Some people, however, will say, “Really? Brian Wilson!?” For not only is Wilson legendary for creating an entirely new approach to music and to recording engineering (especially with the Beach Boys’ 1966 album, Pet Sounds), but he is just as legendary – if not more so – for his spectacular descent into drug addiction and mental illness. For those in the know, the prospect of a biopic about Brian Wilson warily calls up the image of a train wreck. Who would want to watch that? And yet Bill Pohlad’s 2014 film, Love and Mercy, does an amazing job of not delivering a train wreck. It pulls no punches – Wilson’s life wasn’t pretty, and Pohlad makes no effort to pretend that it was. But the film is enlightening, gripping, absorbing. In flashbacks, we learn about the rise of the Beach Boys and Brian Wilson’s role in pushing the band to true artistry. The “current” story is set in the 1980s. It features the story of Wilson’s romance with Melissa Ledbetter and her role in helping him escape from the clutches of his bizarre and unethical psychotherapist, Eugene Landy. Both portions of the film move seamlessly back and forth; both are riveting. As we learn about Wilson’s lifelong struggle with mental illness, we see him not as a train wreck but as a human being confronting enormous pain. That he manages to escape that pain is ultimately life-affirming. This is, indeed, a story of redemption and healing, a tale of love and mercy. Paul Dano is outstanding as the younger Brian Wilson, and John Cusack is equally adept at playing the older Wilson. But my favorite part of the movie is, without a doubt, the closing credit sequence, which features a clip of the real-life Brian Wilson singing his 1988 song, “Love and Mercy.” Finally, you understand where the film gets its title – and after seeing the film, you’re sure to be deeply moved by Wilson’s performance. To learn more about the film, visit the official website, and to delve even deeper, take a look at the extensive Wikipedia page on the movie. In the end, there’s no substitute for watching the film or listening to the soundtrack. And if you just can’t get enough of Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys, give a listen to their seminal album, Pet Sounds. Visit thestoryweb.com/pohlad for links to all these resources and to view several great clips from the film. Start by watching a short featurette about the film. Then watch Paul Dano as the younger Brian Wilson as he first performs “God Only Knows” for his father and John Cusack as the older Wilson as he composes an impromptu piano riff for Melissa Ledbetter. Take a look at director Bill Pohlad’s discussion of what went into shooting the studio scenes for the Pet Sounds album. Finally, check out ABC World News Tonight’s interview with Brian Wilson and Melissa Ledbetter Wilson about the film.
It’s time to get out your surfboards, hang onto your ego, and plug in your theremin as See Hear Podcast heads for the beach. Tim is absent, but Maurice and Bernie are pleased as punch to be joined by two fellow Beach Boys devotees to discuss Bill Pohlad’s 2015 biopic of Brian Wilson, Love And Mercy. For the first part of the show, Frank Santopadre of Gilbert Gottfried’s Amazing Colossal Podcast and writer Tish Grier join the See Hear crew to discuss the Murry Wilson School of parenting, mental health issues, the Wrecking Crew, Beach Boys albums that are not Pet Sounds or Smile, and the contributions to the Beach Boys sounds by members that were not Brian Wilson. The second part of the show is devoted to a discussion on the merits of the film. Given the many flaws usually inherent in a biopic (and we name-check a few), how does Love And Mercy compare? Tune in and find out. Once again, many thanks to Frank and Tish for giving to the show so generously of their time and knowledge.
