Bridgerton is the gift that keeps on giving. With each new season of the show, we're introduced to more wildly talented rising stars, many of whom have now used their Bridgerton fame as a launchpad for building extensive filmographies, and one of the first to do it was Phoebe Dynevor. The moment Bridgerton kicked off its run on Netflix in December 2020, Dynevor became a household name. When her time on the show came to a close in 2022, she pivoted to feature filmmaking and since, has dished out quite a few winners across a variety of genres. In 2023, Fair Play debuted at the Sundance Film Festival and ultimately helped Dynevor secure a BAFTA Rising Star Award nomination. Soon after that came Anniversary, which features Dynevor in the midst of a stellar ensemble that includes Diane Lane, Kyle Chandler, Zoey Deutch, Dylan O'Brien and more. Now, not only does she have a shark movie, Thrash, hitting Netflix, but she's also got a number of highly anticipated projects on the horizon, including the Beach Read film adaption and the M. Night Shyamalan and Nicholas Sparks collaboration, Remain.ith Thrash now available to stream on Netflix and hype building for Dynevor's upcoming films and shows, she took the time to visit the Collider Ladies Night studio to discuss how she's whipped up such a diverse resume, and how she hopes to expand it even further in the future. Secret Wars to Begin Filming in August, New Lanterns Trailer, and More Casting for The Batman II

The review embargo lifted today for The Mandalorian and Grogu, and the bag is more than a little mixed. Critics are either praising the film for its fun action adventure nature of the bounty hunter and his foundling or others are saying the film does not live up to the iconography that Lucasfilm and Star Wars is known for as well as having too small of a story for the big screen. With this being the first Star Wars film in seven years, a lot is likely riding on the performance of Din Djarin and Din Grogu. Ebon Moss-Bachrach has been quietly dishing details on not only Avengers: Doomsday but Secret Wars across his various media appearances in recent days. On Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused podcast, the Thing actor admitted the Doomsday script he read didn't have a finished third act saying, "I don't think it had an ending,” and described the production as so compartmentalized and "interstellar" that he'd repeatedly go back to Joe Russo to have the multiverse threading re-explained. Then in a separate chat with the Dog Day Afternoon Broadway team, a play based on the 1975 film the actor is performing in, he casually dropped that Secret Wars filming kicks off in August 2026, right after his stage run wraps in mid-July.HBO set August 16 as the premiere date for Lanterns and dropped a new trailer that complicates the show's dark, earth-based mystery pitch with shots of Kyle Chandler's Hal Jordan in the classic Green Lantern uniform and what appears to be an off-world setting. The trailer also confirms Nathan Fillion is reprising his role as Guy Gardner and reveals Laura Linney in an undisclosed part opposite Aaron Pierre's John Stewart. Matt Reeves used a series of X posts last week to officially welcome Brian Tyree Henry and Sebastian Koch to Gotham for The Batman: Part II. They join the previously confirmed additions of Scarlett Johansson as Gilda Dent, Sebastian Stan as Harvey Dent, and Charles Dance as Harvey's father Christopher. Henry, a Marvel alum from Eternals who also memorably appeared in 2019's Joker, marks his second trip into the DC sandbox, while Koch is known for his prestige work appearing in films like Bridge of Spies. Michael continued another strong run at the box office this weekend and has now crossed $700 million dollars worldwide while the Devil Wears Prada 2 also continued its solid streak, crossing the $500 million dollar mark internationally. Mortal Kombat 2 crossed the $100 million dollar mark in its second weekend. Horror film Obsession opened very well with $23 million dollars worldwide, a big opening for a film from a first time director acquired out of a film festival. Marvel is making some changes to leadership in its comics division. The company has promoted Brad Winderbaum, already its chief of television and animation, to head of Marvel television, animation, comics and franchise. At the same time, David Abdo, former manager of Disney's music division, will transition to serve as Marvel's general manager, comics and franchise, reporting to Winderbaum. With the new top leadership coming in, that means that Dan Buckley, the longtime Marvel Comics head, is departing. Buckley will remain at Marvel through mid-2027 to support the leadership transition.HBO's Harry Potter series will already be recasting a role as production begins on season 2. Actress Gracie Cochrane, who portrays Ginny Weasley in the upcoming season 1 will not return for Season 2 of the series due to 'unforeseen circumstances,' Cochrane and her family revealed in a statement.Disney+ has begun development on Ella Enchanted, a TV series based on the 2004 Miramax fairytale film of the same name that starred Anne Hathaway, who will return to produce the series. Anyone But You writer Ilana Wolpert will serve as showrunner.A final look trailer for Prime's Spider-Noir, starring Nicholas Cage, was dropped today.

Frank and Thomas are back after a week-long hiatus to tackle a geek culture landscape that has completely shifted! We're breaking down the industry-shaking news of the Paramount and Warner Brothers merger—discussing why this $110 billion deal might be a disaster for writers and original storytelling. Plus, we dive deep into the first trailers for The Boys Season 5 and the DCU's Lanterns. From Butcher's "Venom-like" powers to the True Detective vibes of Hal Jordan and John Stewart, we leave no stone unturned. We also address the viral God of War "AI" image controversy and drop a "Question of the Week" take that might get us roasted: Is Dune actually overhyped? Timestamps and Topics 00:00 – Welcome Back: Convention prep for WonderCon and our recent interview with Lenore Zann (the voice of Rogue!). 02:37 – The Hot Seat: Which "masterpiece" is actually trash? Why Dune didn't connect and why Scream feels like "Fast and Furious with Ghost Masks." 05:50 – The Boys Final Season: Analyzing Butcher's new powers, Homelander in the White House, and A-Train's incredible 180-degree character arc. 11:51 – Lanterns First Look: The "True Detective" aesthetic, Kyle Chandler's "Old Dog" Hal Jordan, and the mystery of the "Only Human" Green Lanterns. 15:40 – Suit Check: Why the physical, weathered suits in Lanterns are a win for the DCU. 22:53 – God of War Drama: Was the leaked Kratos image AI? Breaking down the "cosplay" look and Ryan Hurst's cryptic warning. 30:12 – Game of Thrones Movie: An Aegon's Conquest film is coming from the writer of Andor and House of Cards. 40:31 – The $110B Mega-Merger: Why the Paramount/WB merger is "Paramount doing Paramount things" and the danger of studios only making "safe bets." 51:00 – Project Helix & IP Waste: Xbox's next move and why Paramount is sitting on a goldmine of GI Joe, Star Trek, and TMNT content. 01:12:57 – Frank's Recommendation: Pokémon Fire Red/Leaf Green on the Switch for that ultimate nostalgia hit. Key Takeaways The Death of the Mid-Tier Movie: The Paramount/WB merger threatens the future of original stories as studios pivot exclusively to established IP. A-Train's Redemption: The Boys has successfully transitioned A-Train from a Season 1 villain to a core member of the resistance. Grounded DCU: By embracing a procedural, "True Detective" vibe for Lanterns, James Gunn is focusing on character dynamics over pure spectacle. Marketing Mishaps: The God of War image controversy highlights a growing fan distrust of early production reveals and "AI-looking" marketing. Memorable Quotes "It's just Fast and Furious with Ghost Mask... it feels so repetitive and I'm just so done with it." — Frank on the Scream franchise. "Earth blowing up is not a 0% chance. I could see Homelander winning and just deciding to nuke the entire planet." — Frank on The Boys finale. "You kind of want that old dog on the Justice League. That's our Hal Jordan." — Frank on Kyle Chandler's casting. Call to Action If you enjoyed our deep dive into the future of Hollywood, subscribe and leave a 5-star review! We kick things off with the star-studded drama Anniversary. This thriller (starring Diane Lane and Kyle Chandler) explores what happens when a family falls apart just as a mysterious new movement sweeps the country. It's tense, emotional, and it definitely made us think twice about our next family reunion!Fun Flix Fact: Despite the heavy on-screen drama, the cast spent their breaks having high-stakes board game tournaments on set. Apparently, Kyle Chandler is a formidable Monopoly player and kept the bank on lockdown between takes!Next, we're hitting the road for Crime 101, the gritty heist thriller that everyone's talking about. It's a high-octane game of cat-and-mouse between a brilliant jewel thief (Chris Hemsworth) and a relentless detective (Mark Ruffalo) along the Pacific Coast Highway.Fun Flix Fact: This film marks a massive on-screen reunion for Hemsworth and Ruffalo. To prepare for their rivalry, they avoided each other on set for the first few weeks of filming to keep their on-screen tension as authentic as possible! If you're a fan of a good fright, you'll love our review of Whistle. When a group of teenagers discovers an ancient, cursed whistle, they inadvertently summon an entity that hunts anyone who hears its call. It's "don't make a sound" taken to a terrifying new level.Fun Flix Fact: Director Corin Hardy is a legend when it comes to practical effects. He insisted that the "Creature" be played by a physical performer in a custom suit rather than using CGI, meaning the terrified reactions from the young cast are often very, very real! For this week's Anniversary Corner, we're hacking into the mainframe to celebrate 25 years of the slick, stylish Swordfish. Starring Halle Berry, John Travolta, and Hugh Jackman, it's the ultimate early-2000s tech-thriller.Fun Flix Fact: The film's incredible opening explosion was filmed using a "bullet-time" rig featuring 135 different cameras. At the time, it was one of the most expensive and complex practical stunts ever choreographed for a film! And if that's not enough entertainment for you, we've even thrown in new trailers to watch and what you can catch on streaming. Press play for the friendliest film discussions this side of Hollywood! Matt Damon and Ben Affleck share the screen again in new Netflix film, The Rip. Similar to the pulpy, midbudget cop movies we used to get, The Rip is about a team of cops who are trying to take a huge stash of money from a drug cartel. But that work is not only dangerous, but also complicated as they encounter more money than they expected. The cast also includes Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, and Kyle Chandler.Follow Pop Culture Happy Hour on Letterboxd at letterboxd.com/nprpopcultureLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Sweaty palms, bad decisions, and the creeping realization that the walls are closing in have always been Joe Carnahan's cinematic comfort zone, from the raw nerve of “Narc” to the adrenalized chaos of “Smokin' Aces.” With “The Rip,” Carnahan distills that obsession into its most claustrophobic form yet, a lean, pressure-cooker cop thriller that weaponizes procedure, grief, and mistrust by refusing to let anyone leave the room.Premiering January 16 on Netflix, the film follows a team of law enforcement officers tasked with counting a massive cash seizure inside a private home, only to realize the money has placed them squarely in someone else's crosshairs, turning routine protocol into a moral and physical siege where loyalty fractures and survival comes at a cost. The film stars Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Kyle Chandler, Scott Adkins, and more.On this episode of The Discourse, host Mike DeAngelo is joined by writer-director Joe Carnahan to discuss how “The Rip” grew out of deeply personal real-life experience, why confinement can be more terrifying than scale, collaborating with Damon and Affleck as producers, and why character-driven crime stories continue to pull him back more than any franchise machinery.

There have been a number of big summer movies like "F1: The Movie," "Superman" and "Jurrassic World: Rebirth." But these popcorn movies are not likely destined for big awards. Studios like to hold back the Oscar contenders for the fall, so in this week's episode we dive into which movies to watch for this fall and into the winter. You can also review a full list of notable films below. August releases “Honey Don’t!” – Ethan Coen continues his Margaret Qualley-a-thon with this comedy about a private investigator who looks into a series of deaths tied to a church. Aubrey Plaza, Chris Evans co-star. “Splitsville” – Divorce makes strange bedfellows, particularly when the ex discovers his best friends have an open marriage. Dakota Johnson, Kyle Marvin star. “Eden” – Looking for a better life, a group of people head to the Galapagos and realize what they’re up against. Jude Law and Ana de Armas star in this based-in-fact drama directed by Ron Howard. “Relay” – Payoffs between corporations brings a broker into the line of fire. Riz Ahmed, Lily James and Sam Worthington star. “Hollywood Grit” – A private investigator has to find out what happened to his daughter. Tyrese, Max Martini star. “Lurker” – How strange is the world of stardom? A worker finds out as he gets closer to a music star. Alex Russell wrote and directed this drama starring Theodore Pellerin and Archie Madekwe. “The Thursday Murder Club” – Friends in a retirement home solve mysteries. Pierce Brosnan, Helen Mirren, Ben Kingsley are in the home. “The Roses” – An updated look at “War of the Roses” lets Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman square off. Jay Roach directs. “Caught Stealing” – Austin Butler gets the Darren Aronofsky treatment as a baseball player caught in the underbelly of New York City. Bad Bunny is along for the ride. “The Toxic Avenger”—When a janitor is the victim of a toxic accident, a new crimefighter emerges. Peter Dinklage, Jacob Tremblay and Taylour Paige star. “Jaws” – The first summer blockbuster returns to the big screen after months on television. Now, you can see what audiences were scared of in 1975. “Love, Brooklyn” – Friends navigate the pitfalls of life in Brooklyn. September releases “Megadoc” – Mike Figgis looks at the making of Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis.” “The Conjuring: Last Rites” – Those creepy paranormal investigators say they’re taking on one last case (sure) to settle their own lives. Patric Wilson and Vera Farmiga return. “The Threesome” – A threesome leads to problems, particularly since life’s not always fantasies. Zoey Deutch and Jonah Hauer-King star. “Twinless” – Two men bond in a support group. Dylan O’Brien, Lauren Graham and Arkira Chantaratananond star. “Hamilton” – Celebrating its “ten-cennial,” the Broadway hit brings its performance capture version (which ran on Disney+) to the big screen. Updates about the performers make this more than a night out. “The Baltimorons” – Sobriety leads to a dental emergency which leads to a romance with the dentist. Jay Duplass directs; Michael Strassner co-writes and stars. “The Long Walk” —You thought the Hunger Games were bad, how about this: Teenage boys compete in a walking contest. If they don’t keep up, they’re shot. Based on a Stephen King story, it’s one of the year’s most harrowing. “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues” – Those Smell the Glove guys reunite after a 15-year hiatus for one last concert. Rob Reiner directs; the original actors return. “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale” – The Crawleys face scandal, financial ruin and social disgrace. To get out of it, they look to a younger generation. Expect all but Maggie Smith to be back. “The History of Sound” – Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor embark on a World War I project that brings them close to their country and each other. “Code 3” – One last shift for a paramedic who has to train his replacement. What could go wrong? Rainn Wilson, Lil Rel Howery star. “Him” – What a guy won’t do to be a football star. Here, one goes to a compound where anything can happen. Tyriq Withers, Marlon Wayans and Julia Fox star. “American Sweatshop – Yup, it’s the world of social media. An insider discovers just how dark the world is (like we didn’t know). “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey” – Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie bond in a unique journey (which, of course, says nothing but suggests there’s more to this than two big stars). “The Summer Book” – A girl and her grandmother become closer in Finland. Emily Matthews and Glenn Close star. (Could this be the one that finally wins Close an Oscar?) “Xeno” – Ready for another E.T.? This one finds a teenager relating to the alien. Josh Cooke, Lulu Wilson star. “Waltzing with Brando” – When Marlon Brando wants an ecologically perfect retreat in Tahiti, he calls on a Los Angeles architect. Tia Carrere, Richard Dreyfuss and Jon Heder star. “Eleanor the Great” – Scarlett Johansson directs June Squibb in this drama about a 94-year-old who has plenty of stories to tell. “One Battle After Another” – Leonardo DiCaprio stars in this dark comedy about a group of revolutionaries reuniting to save one of their group’s daughter. Paul Thomas Anderson directs; Benicio Del Toro (who starred in a Wes Anderson film earlier this year) and Sean Penn co-star. October releases “The Smashing Machine” – Dwayne Johnson tries his hand at mixed-martial arts as UFC champion Mark Kerr. The makeup may be a stretch, but Benny Safdie directs, Emily Blunt disappears in an unlikely role. “Tron: Ares” – Jared Leto gets to run the race. Jeff Bridges is here, too, but this is about a new program (Ares) that’s about to embark on a dangerous mission. “Roofman” – A robber evades authorities by hanging out in a toy store. Channing Tatum plays the thief, Peter Dinklage and Kirsten Dunst swirl around him. “Anemone” – Daniel Day-Lewis comes out of retirement for this film directed by his son, Ronan. The plot? Good question, but it will have that DD-L prestige. “Kiss of the Spider Woman” – Jennifer Lopez stars in the Tony winner fans have been asking for. The big question: Were they looking for Lopez to star in it? Bill Conden directs. “If I Had Legs, I’d Kick You” – Rose Byrne gets the Oscar buzz as a woman trying to juggle multiple traumas, including a sick child and an absent husband. “Soul on Fire” – This is the story of a St. Louis native who survived burns which covered his body. Joel Courtney plays John O’Leary. William H. Macy and John Corbett co-star. “Good Fortune” – An angel meddles in the lives of a venture capitalist and a gig worker. Seth Rogen, Azizi Ansari and Keke Palmer star in this comedy written and directed by Ansari. Black Phone 2 – More trouble ensues when the phone rings. Sequel to a better-than-average horror film. “After the Hunt” – Julia Roberts plays a college professor who wonders what could happen when a student levels an accusation against a colleague. Ayo Edebiri co-stars. The Mastermind – A family man leads a double life in the 1970s. Josh O’Connor and Alana Haim star. “Pets on a Train” – Animated animals get caught up in a train heist. Hedda” – “Hedda Gabler” gets the big-screen treatment with Tessa Thompson in the title role. Blue Moon – The life of Lorenz Hart is told by Richard Linklater with Ethan Hawke as Hart. Andrew Scott plays Richard Rodgers. “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere” -- Bruce Springsteen gets the Bob Dylan treatment with Jeremy Allen White in the title role. This, however, only covers the creation of the “Nebraska” album. “Regretting You” – Family issues emerge after the death of a husband and father. Based on Colleen Hoover’s best-seller, it stars Allison Williams and Mckenna Grace. “The Watchers” – M. Night Shayamalan’s daughter Ishana makes her directorial debut with this thriller about an artist who gets trapped in an Irish forest. “Anniversary” – A good cast (Diane Lane, Kyle Chandler, Zoey Deutch) in a thriller directed by Polish filmmaker Jan Komasa. “Bugonia” – Emma Stone continues her run with Yorgos Lanthimos. The film is a remake of a South Korean effort about two men kidnapping an executive, convinced she’s an alien bent on destroying Earth. “Nouvelle Vague” – Richard Linklater has another entry this year. This one’s a look at Jean-Luc Godard and actress Jean Seberg. Guillaume Marbeck and Zoey Deutch start. November releases When We Pray – Jamie Foxx directs the story of brothers who become pastors at divergent churches. Predator: Badlands – While “Alien: Earth” takes over TV screens, the “other” scary creature takes on a remote planet. The Running Man” – Glen Powell steps into Arnold Schwarzenegger’s shoes as a contestant in a game show which features killers all around the world. Nuremberg – Set during the Nuremberg trials, a psychiatrist interviews Nazi prisoners to determine if they are fit to stand trial. Rami Malek and Russell Crowe square off. Peter Hujar’s Day – What was New York’s art world like in 1974? Rebecca Hall and Ben Whishaw play two who know. Ira Sachs directs. “Now You See Me: Now You Don’t” – The Four Horsemen get help from newbies hoping to use illusions to get away with big cash. Jay Kelly – It’s an ensemble film but it stars George Clooney as a George Clooney-level star who reflects on life with his manager (played by Adam Sandler). Noah Baumbach directs. Indecipherable – A boy, home alone, gets shaken by the things that go bump in the night. Wicked: For Good – At long last, we find out what happened to Glinda and Elphaba. Expect at least one new song and bigger roles for the men in their lives. No place like home? That’s included, too. Cynthia Orivo and Ariana Grande could double up on the Oscar nominations. Rental Family – Oscar winner Brendan Fraser plays an American actor who plays roles in other people’s lives. STZ – Zombies result when a trio of scientists launch a bio-attack on a bus filled with women. (No kidding.) Zootopia 2 – Residents of Zootopia return for more adventure and product placement. Judy and Nick are on the trail of a new resident, a snake. This week on Aug-Heist: The Getaway, fact meets fiction with the “based on a true story about a fake movie” Argo! Set during the Iranian hostage crisis, this ensemble escape thriller stormed the box office and awards season, raking in over $230 million and winning Oscars for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Film Editing.
