HBO's Lanterns has officially arrived — and somehow, it's even better than we expected. Kaya and I Ken Not podcast host Kendrick are joined by special guest Ryan Bailey of So Bad It's Good with Ryan Bailey to break down the first three episodes of Lanterns HBO and DC Studios' new take on the Green Lantern universe starring Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan. We came into Lanterns with high expectations, but the series has already exceeded them. Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler are fantastic as two Green Lanterns who could not be more different. John Stewart is controlled, observant and determined to prove himself, while Hal Jordan is an experienced, stubborn veteran carrying secrets of his own. That clash makes their partnership — and their performances — one of the strongest parts of the series. **SPOILERS AHEAD for Lanterns Episodes 1–3!** We break down the mystery introduced in Episode 1, as Hal is tasked with training John and the two head to Rushville, Nebraska, where a bizarre case involving dead extraterrestrials begins to reveal something much bigger. The episode also jumps through time and gives us the shocking revelation that Hal Jordan is dead in 2026, immediately turning the season into a mystery about not only what happened in Rushville, but what eventually happened to Hal. In Episode 2, “Trust Fall,” the investigation expands as John and Hal learn more about the terrifying Manhunter threat potentially hiding in Rushville. While working separately, we also begin to see just how different their approaches to being Green Lanterns really are — and why trusting each other may be as important as solving the case. Then Episode 3, “OutKast,” takes us deep into John Stewart's origin story. Through his unusual Green Lantern interview and flashbacks to his childhood and military career, we learn how John was shaped by his family, his experiences as a Black man in America and the expectations placed on him long before he ever wore the ring. We also discover that the Guardians may have much bigger plans for John — including the revelation that he isn't simply being recruited to work alongside Hal. And this is exactly why we think you don't have to be a superhero fan to love Lanterns. If you're a fan of strong acting, complicated characters, mystery and genuinely good storytelling, there is something here for you.We also get into some of the conversation happening around the show — including the sudden attempts to rewrite history around Ryan Reynolds' 2011 Green Lantern movie now that Lanterns is being praised, and why some viewers seem uncomfortable with the new series directly acknowledging the realities of being Black in America through John Stewart's story. Is Lanterns already proving that the DCU can tell superhero stories that feel completely different from traditional comic-book television? Are Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler the perfect John Stewart and Hal Jordan? And after Episodes 1–3… where exactly is this mystery taking us? Join us as we break it all down.#Lanterns #GreenLantern #DCU #AaronPierre #JohnStewartFOLLOW US ON INSTAGRAM HERESUBSCRIBE TO OUR PATREON HEREOH YEAH WE ON THREADS HEREWHAT? YOU WANT OUR FACEBOOK? Initiated by the mysterious alien committee the Guardians of the Universe, each sector of deep space is regulated by one specially selected peacekeeper empowered with green-energy manifested by willpower and duty, through a ring that is to be routinely charged using the lantern bestowed to only the Green Lantern Corps members. Now, somewhere along the highways of the American heartland, the mentor and apprenticeship of the next to join the Corps to protect Earth's location within Sector 2814 has begun. This is DC Studios' Lanterns.Creators Tom King and Damon Lindelof (Lost, Watchmen) have developed a great True Detective influenced police procedural wrapped in comic book authentication. Writers Vanessa Baden, Justin Britt-Gibson, Breannah Gibson and Christopher Cantwell all contribute to a larger narrative from out of the murder mysteries to be solved with character details and story turns that keeps the plot riveting and the audience riveted. Together with Chris Mundy (Ozark) doing double duty as showrunner and executive producer, Lanterns is currently exceeding expectations due to the writing, but mostly because of the fantastic chemistry and character relatability between Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre. They are what is ultimately going to make this a hit series or a flop. So far, Lanterns are shining quite brightly.

Wolves & The Wolf of Wall Street

This week on Bad Dads Film Review, Wolf Week continues as Sidey, Dan and new dad Jamie sink their teeth into Martin Scorsese's riotous financial crime epic The Wolf of Wall Street, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Margot Robbie, Matthew McConaughey, Kyle Chandler, Rob Reiner, Jon Bernthal, Jon Favreau and Joanna Lumley. With Reegs absent and therefore no proper intro to keep things vaguely professional, the dads begin by catching up on what they've been watching. Dan has largely swapped screen time for Cold War spy histories while his wife is away in the Czech Republic for the summer, Jamie has returned to the comforting embrace of Blue Bloods, No Offence and Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, and Sidey has endured Jason Statham's Mutiny, a revenge-on-a-boat action thriller with suspiciously Die Hard-adjacent poster energy. The Top 5 this week is Wolves, which naturally sends the conversation roaming all over the cultural wilderness. There's Winston Wolf from Pulp Fiction, Moro from Princess Mononoke, Teen Wolf and the obvious sporting advantage of being Michael J. Fox with werewolf powers, plus Shrek's Big Bad Wolf and a detour through wolf-related music from Warren Zevon, Ozzy Osbourne, Metallica, Duran Duran, Howlin' Wolf, Steppenwolf, Los Lobos, Wolfmother and Wolf Alice. Liam Neeson's miserable survival odds in The Grey get a mention, as do Bad Wolf and Rose Tyler from Doctor Who, Jack Nicholson in Wolf, Remus Lupin, Dances with Wolves, Portia Crystal from Sing 2, Lupine Howl, the direwolves from Game of Thrones, How Wolves Change Rivers, Rainier Wolfcastle and Oz from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Then it's on to The Wolf of Wall Street, a film the dads note is arriving neatly alongside Jersey's current Martin Scorsese cinema season. They follow Jordan Belfort from his first day as Wall Street pond scum through Matthew McConaughey's career-rescuing lunch scene of coke, booze,chest-thumping and “rookie numbers”, before Black Monday promptly ends any chance of a respectable finance career. From there it's penny stocks, Spike Jonze, 50% commissions and the arrival of Donnie Azoff, whose cousin-wife logic, blinding white teeth and crack-pipe networking help turn Stratton Oakmont into a full-blown fraud machine. Along the way, the dads dig into the film's most notorious moments: the “sell me this pen” lesson, motivational speeches, middle fingers to clients, dwarf tossing, strippers, head shaving, Rob Reiner as Belfort's furious father, Margot Robbie's Naomi making her entrance, Donnie's appalling first impression, the famous 11-second romance, Vegas excess, penicillin shots and a superyacht wedding present. They also cover Kyle Chandler's FBI agent Patrick Denham closing in, Jon Favreau's lawyer trying desperately to make Jordan stop, the Steve Madden IPO, hidden stock ownership, Joanna Lumley's Aunt Emma and the Swiss bank account, plus Jordan's spectacularly arrogant attempt to bribe the FBI with lobster, prostitutes and absolutely no self-awareness. The review also takes in the yacht storm and Italian rescue, the infamous Lemmon Quaaludes sequence with crawling, ham-choking and the destroyed Lamborghini reveal, Jordan wearing a wire while warning Donnie not to incriminate himself, and the ugly final collapse as Naomi demands a divorce, Jordan turns violent and everything finally crashes. By the end, the dads are left wrestling with prison, sales seminars and the uncomfortable question of whether the film really works as a cautionary tale, or whether it is simply too entertaining for its own good. Verdicts are strong across the board. Sidey recommends it, while still insisting it is far too long. Dan also gives it a strong recommend, particularly for the endlessly quotable scenes, and Jamie calls it a must-watch — although preferably consumed as three one-hour chunks rather than one enormous sitting. You can now text us anonymously to leave feedback, suggest future content or simply hurl abuse at us. Valeu a espera? A abordagem policial funciona?

This week on Fantastic Forum, we're heading into the DC Universe for a double dose of Green Lantern action, as we take a look at HBO's highly anticipated Lanterns and one of the latest chapters of Green Lantern Corps! First up is Lanterns on HBO, starring Kyle Chandler as veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as newly recruited John Stewart. Created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, the series takes the cosmic mythology of the Green Lanterns and brings it down to Earth for a mystery involving the two Lanterns and a murder investigation in rural Nebraska. With Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro, and Kelly Macdonald as Sheriff Kerry, the series blends superhero mythology with the feel of a grounded detective thriller. We're breaking down the premiere, the performances, the mysteries, and what Lanterns could mean for the future of the DC Universe. Then we turn to Green Lantern Corps #17, written by Morgan Hampton, with art by Fernando Pasarin and Oclair Albert. The Manhunters are pressing their attack, and the Lanterns face an impossible challenge as they attempt to protect Ophidian. When Effigy goes supernova on the sun, transforming it into a black hole, the Lanterns must race past the event horizon to save Ophidian and prevent Oa and New Thanagar from being plunged into catastrophic ice ages.
