Host Meg Wolitzerpresents works that reflect on the loss of love, creatively imagined by a quartet of thoughtful writers. In “The Space,” by Christopher Boucher, a lost love is replaced by—her absence. The reader is Rob Yang. In Wendi Kaufman's “Helen on Eighty-Sixth Street,” the loss is the backstory, as a lively ‘tween, voiced by Donna Lynne Champlin, finds ways to deflect the emotional fallout from her father's absence. Sharon Olds' wrenching poem, “Last Look,” read by Jane Kaczmarek, is our palette clearer before we close with a Raymond Carver classic, “Why Don't You Dance?”The couple idly roving a lawn sale don't realize they are walking through the detritus of lost relationship. The reader is Corey Stoll.

“If I was Blipped and came back, I'd rather be dead at that point!” - Eric On this episode, we're doing our best to make our way through what could possibly be the nadir of the MCU, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania! How did they release this thing as-is with all the poorly rendered CGI? Did any of these actors actually want to be in this movie? Were they trying to wedge in a bad TV series with all these Quantum realm rebel characters? And who's excited for all these Tiny Toon Avengers to get their own movie (probably)? PLUS: Eric gets Pet Sematary'd by The Blip! Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania stars Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jonathan Majors, Kathryn Newton, Bill Murray, Katy O'Brian, William Jackson Harper, David Dastmalchian, and Corey Stoll as M.O.D.O.K. for some reason; directed by Peyton Reed. Tune in as my friend Daxh Alanis hops into the guest seat for a breakdown of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which is not only the 31st movie in the MCU, but is also the movie that's kicking off Phase 5 of the superhero franchise. The parallels that this flick shares with pop culture media like Star Wars and Rick and Morty, whether the MCU is being written like a TV show, the Jonathan Majors situation, and using the Kardashev scale to classify a highly intelligent ant colony make up just a few of this episode's talking points. Directed by Peyton Reed, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania stars Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Jonathan Majors, Kathryn Newton, Michelle Pfeiffer, Michael Douglas, Corey Stoll, Bill Murray, William Jackson Harper, David Dastmalchian, Jamie Andrew Cutler, and Katy M. O'Brian. Comic book expert, Erik Laws, returns to talk with Erik Childress about the third Ant-Man film and the beginning of Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Phase 4 did not close out well by either of their standards so they were certainly in the mood for a good palette cleanser. Unfortunately, this one did not go down nearly as smoothly as the previous films with Paul Rudd. They wonder if Kevin Feige has checked himself out more than imagined and why the latest entries have been so bad at melding the super silly with the super serious. There is certainly one element the Eriks agree upon in this chapter that is so good it is a wonder no one thought just a standalone film with their origin story would have been the more interesting kickoff. Thoughts get so meh that talk eventually turns to what DC has up next and how they can sendoff the last of the pre-Gunn era while still looking forward to his own sendoff from the dwindling Marvel Universe.

The remarkable life and legacy of an NBA superstar and civil rights icon is captured in the documentary Bill Russell: Legend. This two-part film from award-winning director Sam Pollard features the last interview with Bill prior to his passing in 2022 as well as access to his sprawling personal archives. On the court, Russell went on to lead each and every one of his basketball teams to championships — two back-to-back NCAA titles, a gold medal at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games, and 11 championship titles in his thirteen-year career as a Boston Celtic (his last two as the first Black head coach in NBA history). Off the court Russell was a force in the fight for human rights — marching with Martin Luther King Jr., leading boycotts in the NBA over racist practices and speaking out against segregation — efforts which earned him the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Narrated by actors Jeffrey Wright and Corey Stoll and featuring exclusive interviews with the icon's family and friends as well as Steph Curry, Chris Paul, “Magic” Johnson, Larry Bird, Jim Brown and more, Bill Russell: Legend illuminates the ways in which Russell stood tall in every sense of the word. Director Sam Pollard (MLK/FBI, Lowndes County and the Road to Black Power) joins us for a conversation on the player, the coach, the legend and the man who was one of the most influential figures in the history of sport and American civil society. Following yet another long break between episodes (we know, we know), Evan and Matt are back to continue their slow moving journey rewatching and ranking the movies of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This episode brings them to the end of MCU phase two, 2015's Ant-man. The guys will discuss what they do and don't like about the movie, consider the smallness of the film (literally and figuratively), rank the villain's impact, and ultimately decide where Ant-man ranks among the MCU's first twelve films. And why are they talking about Dick Van Dyke's bad English accent? Hard to say. Give the show a listen and find out!
We're in Paris again this weekend where we eat pastries and bread with brie and discuss Midnight in Paris. Creative characters abound in this film, but are they just caricatures of artists from the 1920s, or were they actually just a bunch of crazy characters that keep inspiring the world a hundred years later? You decide. One thing we all agree with is Corey Stoll as Ernest Hemingway makes one very sexy icon.
