Kyra Jones grew up in Annapolis, Maryland, a small city know for its crabs, boats, and being where Kunta Kinte was sold into slavery. You can extrapolate as to how an upbringing in such a location contributed to her hatred of white supremacy and her love of seafood. Kyra is a 2nd-generation West Indian American and spent most of her life talking shit over curry chicken with her Trinidadian family members. After high school, Kyra left the east coast for the Windy City to study acting at Northwestern University, where she was one of only 4 Black theatre majors out of her class of 100. (Seriously. There were more Black people in her house than there were in her graduating class). While attending the predominantly white institution, she became frustrated by the amount of old, dead, white, male playwrights she had to study and perform. Then a professor in the Gender Studies department told her the definition of “intersectional feminism” and gave her some Angela Davis, and it was all downhill from there. Kyra became heavily involved in student advocacy, activism, and peer education around racial and gender justice, much to the theatre department's chagrin. She graduated from NU with a bachelor's degree in Theatre and Gender Studies. Kyra is currently a staff writer on season 2 of Woke (Hulu) and Queens (ABC). Kyra is the co-creator and star of the award-winning web series The Right Swipe (OTV). The Right Swipe was an official selection at Austin Film Festival, Urbanworld Film Festival, DC Black Film Festival, Black Femme Supremacy Film Festival, and many others. Her comedy script, Good Vibes Only, won Best Pilot at the 2020 Nashville Film Festival and was runner-up for Cinestory. Her upcoming feature, Go to the Body, won ‘The Pitch' at the 2020 Chicago International Film Festival and Screencraft's virtual pitch competition. As an actor, she's appeared on the series finale of Empire (Fox), Chicago Justice (NBC), The Chi (Showtime), Kappa Force (Revry), and Seeds (OTV). https://www.instagram.com/kyra.a.jones https://twitter.com/BlkAssFeminist Connect with your host Kaia Alexander: https://entertainmentbusinessleague.com/ https://twitter.com/thisiskaia  Produced by Stuart W. This week on Hormonally Speaking, we have Abby Epstein, the acclaimed American film director and producer best known for her work on the documentaries "The Business of Being Born" "Until the Violence Stops,” and “Weed The People.” Epstein has won several awards for her documentaries, including the Audience Awards at Vancouver's Amnesty International Film Festival and Nashville Film Festival, as well as premiering at Sundance, Tribeca, and SXSW festivals. We discuss her and her business partner Ricki Lake's latest movie, “The Business of Birth Control”, which aims to shed light on the effects of hormonal contraceptives and the need for newer and better options. The documentary was inspired by the book "Sweetening the Pill" by Holly Grigg-Spall. We Cover So Much Including: ✨How the film was not made to promote a specific ideology, despite what some people think ✨That it was difficult to find experts in the field who would speak out against the status quo (but they still found some amazing ones!) ✨The fact that modern medicine has often failed women, leading to poor menstrual health, low body literacy, and high rates of endometriosis, PCOS, fibroids, anxiety, and depression ✨Why there is a need to evolve and develop solutions regarding women's health and bodies, especially in terms of contraception and long-term effects of medications ✨And so much more good stuff! Our conversation was powerful, and one you don't want to miss, especially if you are currently on birth control, or have children that are. You'll also want to see the movie ASAP - especially since March 8 is International Women's Day - which you can stream here. Use code “HORMONALLYSPEAKING” at check out to get half off. This week on On Story we're joined by Lipscomb University filmmakers Melissa Forte & Sumner McMurtry talking about their journey from a chance encounter at Austin Film Festival to collaborating on a short film born out of a Ghost Story writing competition. Later, we'll sit down with Bogle Family Vinyards VP of Consumer Relations, Jody Bogle, and get her insight on producing a film rich in family history and spooky occurrences.  Melissa Forte is a filmmaker and current chair of Lipscomb University's Department of Cinematic Arts. After six years of industry work with the Walt Disney World company, Forte spent eight years at Tenessee State University (TSU), earning tenure and building a strong program. After that time, she made the move to Lipscomb University when she was invited to chair the Department of Cinematic Arts. The skills she gained through her years of production work gave her the ability to easily transition into leading academic teams including faculty and staff. Forte is an advocate for instilling the idea that we are part of a larger society and should work to use our gifts and talents to give voice to the underestimated and often overlooked members of our communities.   Sumner McMurtry is an award-winning filmmaker from Nashville, Tennessee. His short thriller, NOT CLICKBAIT, took home the grand prize in Lipscomb University's Five Minute Film Festival and was later screened at the Nashville Film Festival, the oldest running film festival of the south. His latest short film, THEY'VE BEEN WAITING FOR YOU, premiered at the Austin Film Festival in 2022. Sumner has had a passion for storytelling for as long as he can remember. He spends a great deal of his time creating an array of projects for clients across the Middle Tennessee area.   I recently spoke with Melissa & Sumner about their experience creating the short film Phantom which premiered at the Austin Film Festival and working with the Bogle Family as producers. They've Been Waiting For You is the story of the resident spirit which inhabits the cellars of the Bogle Family Vineyards and the rich family history that accompanies the legend.    Next, we're talking to Jody Bogle, who served as producer on the film THEY'VE BEEN WAITING FOR YOU produced in collaboration with the Libscomb University Department of Cinematic Arts.   Jody Bogle is the Vice President of Consumer Relations, at Bogle Family Vineyards. In her role, she oversees hospitality at the family's Home Ranch tasting room, direct-to-consumer sales, and internal and external communications and leads the winery's international sales efforts in 40 countries around the globe. After a chance encounter with members of Libscomb University, Bogle set her sights on producing a short film in celebration of Phantom Wine from her family's vineyards. I recently spoke with Jody about her experience producing the short film with the Libscomb University crew.

I try to hear the quiet voice, the heart of the work, to understand how it intends to be revealed. This is the guiding principle for my own artistic productions as well as my collaborations with others. My defining aesthetic is a commitment to elemental, reasoned storytelling and an earnest, non-judgmental point of view. As a director, cinematographer and editor I have embraced a variety of storytelling techniques throughout my career. Increasingly, I find myself drawn stylistically to a spareness that speaks clearly and without pretense. If ever there was a time to present meaningful content plainly, without judgement or undue analysis, it is now. http://dgfilmworks.com/ This episode was produced and edited by Ash Knowlton.
