Steven L Jones is the author of Murder Ballads Old and New: A Dark and Bloody Record. The book is an exploration of an age-old topic— our human need to document the horrors of the world around us.Steven talks about the origins of the murder ballad, what makes up a horror ballad and some of the murder ballads recorded in punk, post-punk, alt-country, and folk by artists including Johnny Cash, The Smiths, Bob Dylan, The Clash, the Drive By Truckers, Lou Reed, and some obscure songs with stories that are almost hard to believe are true including a 1954 song which would eerily forecast the doom for the man who created a song called "I'm Gonna Murder My Baby". Welcome to a special Thanksgiving episode of Adventures In Vinyl where we discuss the songs around those dreaded roadtrips around the holidays!
Rock on, Slackers!Although nowadays every Disney Channel star gets at least one hit single, in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, actors getting hit records wasn't nearly as common. When this type of thing did happen, it often came from the most unexpected performers. From David Soul (Hutch of Starksy & Hutch fame) and his #1 soft rock hit "Don't Give Up On Us", to Jamie Walter's #1 ballad "How Do You Talk To An Angel", a number of tv and film stars hit the charts in big way.Soap opera hearthrobs Jack Wagner & John Stamos (Beach Boys) became minor music stars, while A list movie stars like Eddie Murphy, Bruce Willis, and Patrick Swayze were one hit wonders.Did you know that Swayze actually wrote "She's Like the Wind"?And do you remember Tracey Ullman before her self titled sketch comedy show hit the airwaves?
It's another edition of The Dialogue: A chill ‘n chat with authors, fellow podcasters, listeners, and more. My guest is Rob Kassees, he's the host of a must-listen podcast for classic rock fans called "1001 Album Complaints". It's a weekly album review show where musicians select, analyze, and laugh about an album from the book “1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die”. by Robert Dimery. Rob gives his thoughts on classic albums like Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, Metallica's black album, and The Beach Boys Pet Sounds. Do they live up to their legendary status? He also shares his favorite rock books including ones by Bruce Springsteen, and the Beastie Boys, along with a guilty pleasure read about Led Zeppelin, and an artistically-inspiring book from David Byrne of Talking Heads. And there's one legendary artist who Rob thinks is overrated. The Grammys had a special tribute last night for the legendary California surf band The Beach Boys. I have not watched award shows for decades, but I could not get away from The Grammys last night as modern musicians sang covers of the classic Beach Boys songs while the actual Beach Boys looked on from the balcony in deep appreciation. I was moved to tears numerous times--for gratitude and in angst over what has happened to the Golden State I was born into and loved for decades...here are some deep surf thoughts...Little surfer, little oneMade my heart come all undoneDo you love me, do you surfer girl?Surfer girl, my little surfer girl-"Surfer Girl" by The Beach Boys*Photo Credit: "Ronnie on Bayless Board" by Ron Jones
These boys can't stick to one musical theme or genre. But therein lies the beauty of DJing. Jonathan and Richard start things out with 80s bangers like Simple Minds, Bowie and the B52's, then switch to Jack White and finish the hour off with Pet Sounds.
Richard pays tribute to his late brother and their musical upbringing by playing some of his brother's beloved records from their childhood. The holy trinity was The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, and of course The Beatles. But the rock continues with The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Crosby, Stills, & Nash, and The Who, before getting into the folk, singer-songwriter years.
Ever find yourself primed for a fascinating journey through a man's musical tastes, influences, and how it all shapes his life? Buckle up, because that's the adventure you're about to embark upon with my friend Chad Turner. Brimming with diverse sonic experiences, influences from bands like U2, and tales of his experience growing up in High River, Alberta, Chad's narrative is as enriching as it is entertaining. Despite his humble origins in a small Canadian town, Chad has led a life full of intriguing happenings and encounters. From his captivating dating experiences and parenting journey to his love for nature, his story takes different hues and shades like the songs on his playlist. He even delves into his love for David Lee Roth's version of the Beach Boys classic, California Girls. You're in for a treat as we traverse through these vibrant stories and how they intertwine with his life's melody. The grand finale of our musical journey delves into a heart-wrenching episode - Chad's life-altering car accident in 2013. But as in Chad's playlist, our narrative does not end on a somber note. We navigate through reflections on marriage, divorce, and the daring exploration of non-vanilla topics in sex and leisure activities. Wrapping up on a high note, Chad leaves us with nuggets of wisdom on embracing life's risks, living it to the fullest, and warding off regret. Which Beach Boys' song brings Paul McCartney to tears? What makes “Light My Fire” a rite-of-passage song for teens in every generation, according to Doors guitarist Robby Krieger? What is it about music that brings back so vividly the passion of our early loves, our deepest losses, our richest memories?Acclaimed music journalist Steve Baltin examines twenty-nine iconic songs of modern music to ultimately answer: what transforms a song into an anthem? How did these songs become such a part of our culture? Featuring original interviews with superstar musicians like the Beach Boys, Shania Twain, and Earth Wind and Fire, this book offers a detailed celebration of songwriting, fan connections, memorable live performances, and more.A must-have anthology for music fans, “Anthems We Love” showcases the most beloved and popular songs of all time, including Neil Diamond's “Sweet Caroline,” the Jackson 5's “ABC,” Aerosmith's “Walk This Way,” and TOTO's “Africa.” More so, it centers the artists behind these songs—and the songs that formed the soundtracks of their lives—as they share stories, for the first time, about how writing an anthem has changed their lives, those of their fans, and our world.Once a proud teenage music geek, Southern California-based author and journalist Steve Baltin has turned that passion into a career that can only be described as a rock and roll fantasy. As a writer for Rolling Stone, L.A. Times, Chicago Tribune, Billboard, Playboy, and many more, as well as the host of the podcast “My Turning Point” and the Amazon Prime/Hulu streaming series “Riffing With”, Baltin has interviewed a who's who of music luminaries. Among his favorite interviews are Alanis Morissette, Slash, Stevie Wonder, Dave Grohl, ASAP Rocky, B. B. King, John Mellencamp, Aretha Franklin, Adele, and a list of artists in the thousands.Purchase a copy of "Anthems We Love: 29 Iconic Artists on the Hit Songs That Shaped Our Lives" through Harper Horizon: www.harpercollinsfocus.com/9780785290520/anthems-we-loveListen to a playlist of the music discussed in this episode: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4U5LNflTjF58fd01aWWLyY?si=8286c91ed8bf4ebaFollow "Anthems We Love" on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/anthemsweloveFollow Steve Baltin on Twitter: https://twitter.com/SBaltinThe Booked On Rock Website: https://www.bookedonrock.comFollow The Booked On Rock with Eric Senich:FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/bookedonrockpodcastTWITTER: https://twitter.com/bookedonrockINSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/bookedonrockpodcastSupport Your Local Bookstore! This week's Pop Screen is for people who like their cars fast, their movies mellow and their Californian singer-songwriters practically horizontal, as Aidan returns to the podcast to look at Monte Hellman's cult road movie Two-Lane Blacktop. A none-more-70s tale of dead-end lives on the open road, it owes something of its laid-back cool to its two lead actors: Laurel Canyon mainstay James Taylor and Beach Boys alumnus Dennis Wilson. It would be fair to say Aidan and Graham have differing opinions on this film, but you'll have to listen to the podcast to find out who's making the case for the defence. Along the way, there's space to delve into the short, sad life of their brilliant co-star Laurie Bird and praise the timeless class of Warren Oates and Harry Dean Stanton. Also, needless to say, Beach Boys superfan Graham explains what very specific thing Dennis brought to the legendary band, and which unlikely figure offered family therapy to the Wilson brothers... Originating from southern California, “Yacht Rock” is mellow soft rock music from the 1970s and 1980s, incorporating jazz fusion, harmonized vocals, and bouncy rhythms. The name came from a 2005 web series of that title, influencing musicologists to further analyze. There's playlists, countdowns, online polls, cover bands, podcasts, and streaming stations branding yacht rock.
