Compliance is a 2012 American thriller film written and directed by Craig Zobel and starring Ann Dowd, Dreama Walker, Pat Healy, and Bill Camp. The plot of the movie is closely based upon an actual strip search phone call scam that took place in Mount Washington, Kentucky in 2004, although the names of the real-life figures were changed. In both the film and the real-life incident, a caller posing as a police officer convinced a restaurant manager and others to carry out unlawful and intrusive procedures on an innocent employee.   The film received generally positive reviews and Dowd's performance as the manipulated restaurant manager was met with critical acclaim, earning her the National Board of Review Award for Best Supporting Actress. The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reports an 89% approval rating with an average rating of 7.5/10 based on 140 reviews. The website's consensus reads, "Anchored by smart, sensitive direction and strong performances, Compliance is a ripped-from-the-headlines thriller that's equal parts gripping and disturbing." On Metacritic, it has a score of 68 out of 100 based on 32 reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews". At the premiere at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, Compliance was met with controversy, as the audience's response included several walkouts and shouting matches during the film's question and answer session.

Co-founded by classicist, translator, and director Bryan Doerries, Theater of War began with a simple yet profound concept: presenting staged readings of Sophocles' plays Ajax and Philoctetes to military communities as a means of addressing both the challenges veterans face and the lasting impact of war on families and relationships. In this episode, Doerries recounts how he was inspired to bring these ancient military tragedies to contemporary audiences, believing they would unlock conversations around trauma and healing. With excerpts of performances by actors Bill Camp, David Strathairn and Adam Driver, this episode explores the initial journey of Theater of War and its impact on military communities, offering insight into how ancient drama opens pathways for veterans to process their experiences.  Now, with over 20 specialized programs, Theater of War Productions reaches diverse communities worldwide, addressing not only the struggles of veterans but also broader public health and social justice issues, including homelessness, racialized violence, and natural disasters. Doerries also discusses the arts' power to heal, showing how storytelling and shared experience allow individuals to confront, process, and share pain. Theater of War taps into this capacity, creating safe spaces that support connection, resilience, and recovery.

Pakula's smart, understated legal thriller Presumed Innocent featuring Harrison Ford in one of his finest performances. Taut, richly detailed, and featuring a considerable bench of "that guy" character actors (including John Spencer, Joe Grifasi, and Brian Dennehy), the film rises above the usual theatrics of the Grisham-era Hollywood legal drama with a crackerjack, densely-packed script that rewards upon repeat viewings while never sacrificing its immediacy. We discuss Harrison Ford in the early 90s, his contemporaneous swings into dramatic territory, and the considered decisions to separate the film's protagonist Rusty Sabich from audience's familiarity with the Harrison Ford action-hero brand. Then, we look at the film's complex narrative features (adapted from a book by lawyer-turned-novelist Scott Turrow) and how the film weaves in its rich details with respect for its audience's ability to connect the dots. Finally, we discuss the Extended Presumiverse - sequel novels and television adaptations of the further works within the Scott Turrow canon, including the most recent AppleTV+ series by David E. Kelley starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard.Follow Katie Stebbins on Twitter.Check out Katie's Etsy for cool prints and film zines.....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish

Welcome to TV Break, where Pop Break's Podcasts Editor Alex Marcus is joined by editor-in-chief Bill Bodkin, and TV Columnist Josh Sarnecky to talk about the happenings in television. Here's the format of the show: The Best Thing I Saw on TV Last Month – Alex, Bill, & Josh talk about a show/episode/event they liked from the last month including HBO's House of the Dragon S2, Disney Plus's The Acolyte S1, Hulu's The Bear, and Netflix's Ripley.  News Break – Alex, Bill, and Josh react to breaking news that Skydance has finally completed its long awaited merger with Paramount Global. Streaming Wars – Alex, Bill, & Josh pick a streamer they think “won the month” based on new shows airing/upcoming shows announced etc. Josh gives the nod to Netflix thanks to their conversation starting films like Hit Man, Axel F, Atlas, and Under Paris and their hit series like Bridgerton (plus news that they will be creating their own amusement experience).  Bill passed over Netflix to give props to MAX after they debuted their trailer for The Penguin, converted some of their event series into HBO originals, announced Damon Lindeloff will be writing their Green Lantern series, and earned major ratings with the NBA Finals and House of the Dragon S2. Meanwhile, Alex spoke up for Tubi a month after they beat Disney Plus in total viewers for second behind Netflix, and scored a ton of good press in the process. New Series Spotlight – This month, they reviewed Presumed Innocent, Apple TV Plus's adaptation of the 1990 Harrison Ford feature film and the 1987 best selling novel by lawyer turned novelist Scott Turow. The series was created by David E Kelley and stars Jake Gyllenhaal, as a local prosecutor accused of murdering his fellow ADA, played in flashbacks by Renate Reinsve, who he happened to be having an affair with at the time of her death. Ruth Negga, O-T Fagbenle, Peter Sarsgaard, and real life husband and wife Bill Camp and Elizabeth Marvel also star.

The Coen Brothers are back!  Well actually just one of them (Ethan Coen) but he's here to direct while also co-writing and co-producing with his wife and long-term Coen's collaborator Tricia Cooke.  And what they have collaborated to deliver is an ambling, quirky, violent crime drama/comedy in the GREAT tradition of previous Coen Brothers' films like Burn After Reading, Fargo, or Raising Arizona.....but is it quite as good as those films?  Well the cast certainly helps as it stars Margaret Qualley (Once Upon A Time in America) and Geraldine Viswanathan (Blockers) as two young ladies who embark on a road trip from Philly to Tallahassee, only to discover that they have a hidden package in their rented car with some VERY sketchy items. :o And of course, there are now various folks chasing after them played by a very stacked cast including Beanie Feldstein, Colman Domingo, Bill Camp, Pedro Pascal, and Matt Damon.  So let's find out if this '90's throwback lives up to its pedigree....  Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Today, we are reviewing the latest film from Ethan Coen, "Drive-Away Dolls," starring Margaret Qualley, Geraldine Viswanathan, Beanie Feldstein, Colman Domingo, Pedro Pascal, Bill Camp & Matt Damon. We've seen what a solo-directed Joel Coen film was with "The Tragedy Of Macbeth," so what does a solo-directed Ethan Cohen film feel like? What did we think of the story, humor, performances, and writing? Tune in as we discuss these elements and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Thank you, and enjoy! This week on Cinemaholics, Jon Negroni and Will Ashton discuss the new dark comedy road film Drive-Away Dolls, directed by Ethan Coen — who co-wrote the film with Tricia Cooke — and starring Margaret Qualley, Geraldine Viswanathan, Beanie Feldstein, Colman Domingo, Pedro Pascal, Bill Camp, Matt Damon, and Will Ashton. Will is of course excited to talk about the film since he shows up in it as an extra, along with his car. But Jon expresses some disappointments he had with the movie's script and editing choices. Drive-Away Dolls opens in theaters on February 23 through Focus Features. Discussion Points:  Why our listeners might enjoy working on a film set if that opportunity ever comes their way! Why some critics stop reviewing films after working in the industry Jon and Will talk about how Ethan and Joel Coen have fared as solo filmmakers thus far. Jon explains the setup of Drive-Away Dolls, including its development hell production, and gives some broad criticism while Will defends its humor and political themes. Will considers the movie quite breezy at just 84 minutes. Pedro Pascal's role in the film is minimal and does not contribute much to the overall story. Jon argues the movie suffers from awkward staging and a lack of engagement, making it difficult for viewers to connect with the characters and plot. Inconsistencies in the script suggest that certain elements may have been cut or altered during production, resulting in a disjointed viewing experience. Jon describes the movie as a collection of vignettes that vary in quality, with some being entertaining and others falling flat. Will appreciates the humor of the opening scene and how it made him feel at ease about the rest of the film Jon's overall takeaway is that Drive-Away Dolls fails to leave a lasting impact and is not particularly memorable. Audience reactions and reviews for the film are not yet available, but Jon and Will express curiosity about others' opinions. Jon and Will play the Rotten Tomatoes game for Vacation Friends 2 (for some reason), speculating on its critical and audience scores. Upcoming topics might include discussions on Madame Web and Bob Marley: One Love, as well as Netflix's live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender.
