Send us a textJohn Barnhardt, writer/director/producer of OPEN DOOR, the documentary film about Temple Grandin, shares his insights, revelations and experiences as both filmmaker and teacher  in the making of the film. A film festival hit, AN OPEN DOOR is an iconic, inside peek at the mind of Colorado State University professor Temple Grandin, well-known for her exemplary work in understanding how cattle and horses see, hear and feel and influencing livestock industry practices. Her ground-breaking work has heavily influenced the humane treatment of cattle and horses and is considered a hallmark in animal welfare care. Temple, who is autistic, has done extensive efforts both through her voice and work in pushing the envelope of understanding  and acceptance for neuro-divergent people everywhere. John, with the devoted support of executive producer John Festervand, created a film that not only captures the essence of one of the most powerful voices of our time for animal welfare and autism, but is an emotionally inspiring experience to do our very best in all walks of life. The film is touching, real and a beautiful example of one person's willingness to be vulnerable and authentic in the face of a world which once institutionalized the autistic. John, a teacher at CSU, a working cinematographer and founder of Barnfly Productions (https://www.barnflyproductions.com)  shares the credit for the film's success with  his CSU student crew. Their professionalism matches that of other professionals with multiple years of experience, says John. In this insightful interview about a heavily-touted documentary, John shares his own learning experiences with Temple during production. Her 17th book, Visual Thinking - the Hidden Gifts of People Who Think In Pictures, Patterns and Abstractions, is featured throughout the film. This book and Temple's nudges encouraged John to look at his own perceptions about math and education differently. Temple's life was portrayed in the 2010 movie. She was played by Clare Danes. John re-introduces Temple to the world in An Open Door and her vast wealth knowledge at age 78. A clip is featured in this interview.  In 'Death of a Wizard', Edward Varnie crafts a gripping tale set during the social unrest of the 1960s, where three boys decide to take matters into their own hands and confront the Grand Wizard living in their small southern town. This narrative is more than just a Southern thriller; it's a raw exploration of identity, violence, and the complex human experience. Known for his thought-provoking storytelling and intellectual depth, Varnie brings an intricate blend of emotional complexity and cinematic visual flair to every project he touches. His work challenges audiences to confront difficult truths, while inviting them into the emotional landscapes of his characters.  Varnie's love for storytelling began at a young age, with poetry, spoken word, and comic books fueling his creative drive. His passion blossomed into a career that has seen him direct award-winning films like 'Release', a festival favorite, and *Weight*, which earned The Black Cat Picture Show's Staff Pick Award. A mentor to many, Varnie has worked closely with acclaimed directors like John Adams, Bob Goose, and Peter Bogdanovich, learning the power of storytelling and the importance of deeply examining human relationships. Themes of empathy, trauma, and connection are central to Varnie's work, as he dives into the complexities of familial ties and the unspoken nuances that define the human experience.  Varnie is unapologetically authentic in his approach, consistently striving to challenge his audience's consciousness and push the boundaries of what cinema can achieve. His focus is not just on the story, but on the collaborative process—prioritizing leadership, accountability, and the collective success of the project. Whether directing a feature or writing a genre narrative, Varnie is dedicated to making work that resonates deeply and evokes genuine emotional responses. His creative philosophy is grounded in humility, recognizing that it's not about ego, but about crafting the best possible story for the audience.  As a director, Varnie's vision is unapologetically bold. He's committed to exploring stories that question societal norms, including the role of violence, trauma, and identity in the lives of men and women of color. His goal is to write narratives that challenge expectations, particularly in the genre space. Varnie's ultimate aspiration? To craft a unique, original take on iconic characters, like DC's Lobo, pushing the boundaries of comic book cinema. In all his endeavors, Varnie seeks to ignite conversation, push creative limits, and offer audiences a deeper understanding of the world through the lens of powerful storytelling. Edward Varnie's Website: https://directorvarnie.com/Edward Varnie's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/edward-varnie-9632a679Edward Varnie's IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm5212162/Edward Varnie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/knowledgevarnie/Support the showVisual Intonation Website: https://www.visualintonations.com/Visual Intonation Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/visualintonation/Vante Gregory's Website: vantegregory.comVante Gregory's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/directedbyvante/ To support me on Patreon (thank you): patreon.com/visualintonations Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@visualintonation Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@directedbyvante

EP 106: Harlem's Storyteller with Director/Writer/Producer Cameron Tyler Carr

Visual Intonation

Cameron Carr is not just a director—he's a force of nature, reshaping the future of storytelling with a sharp focus on the human experience and Black-led narratives. Born and raised in Harlem, Carr's cinematic journey began with childhood VHS tapes and blossomed through years of working in the fast-paced advertising world at agencies like Wieden+Kennedy and BBDO. Now, after years of honing his craft in the commercial space, he's making his indelible mark on film, blending Afro-futurism, drama, and social commentary into work that's as visually compelling as it is emotionally resonant.  His directorial debut, 'Harlem Fragments', is a visceral exploration of family dynamics during the 2008 recession, telling the story of a Harlem Black family's unraveling with staggering beauty and devastating truth. Backed by FUJIFILM with a production budget of $100K, 'Harlem Fragments' doesn't just mark a new chapter for Carr—it signifies his commitment to telling deeply personal stories that speak to the broader Black experience. Shot in the very brownstone his family lost, it's an act of reclamation and self-expression, a vulnerable but powerful PSA for emotional transparency within families, especially in the Black community.  Carr's passion for storytelling is matched only by his dedication to collaboration. For him, directing is about more than just calling the shots—it's about building a village, from cinematographers to editors, all working together to deliver a piece of work that resonates. His background in advertising taught him the importance of efficiency and creativity under pressure, but it's in film where his heart truly lies. Whether it's television, branded content, or narrative features, Cameron Carr is charting a course through Hollywood with a focus on genre-defying work that highlights the complexities of Black life and culture.  As he moves forward, Carr's focus on pushing boundaries remains unwavering. Drawing inspiration from visionary directors like Jordan Peele, Barry Jenkins, and Donald Glover, he's determined to redefine what's possible in filmmaking. His trajectory is clear: continue elevating Black voices, bridging artistic disciplines, and using film to challenge societal norms. With a rapidly growing body of work, including multiple festival award-winners and collaborations with top-tier talent, Cameron Carr's future in film is as bright and innovative as the stories he creates. Cameron Tyler Carr's Website: https://www.cameroncarr.com/Cameron Tyler Carr's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kamcam30/?hl=enCameron Tyler Carr's IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm9270559/Cameron Tyler Carr's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/bycameroncarrCameron Tyler Carr's Twitter: https://x.com/cameroncarr30Support the showVisual Intonation Website: https://www.visualintonations.com/Visual Intonation Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/visualintonation/Vante Gregory's Website: vantegregory.comVante Gregory's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/directedbyvante/ To support me on Patreon (thank you): patreon.com/visualintonations Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@visualintonation Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@directedbyvante

Welcome to this week's episode of Visual Intonation, where we sit down with a filmmaker who's changing the landscape, one story at a time—Lexx Truss. Hailing from Greensboro, North Carolina, Lexx made his mark in the film world with his award-winning short 'Zarina', which won the Grand Prize at the 2019 Emerge! Filmmaking Lab. Since then, he's crafted compelling narratives, exploring the psychological depths of characters in conflict with themselves, all while juggling multiple genres and formats.  From his early days as a drumline musician and freelance videographer to his time producing 100+ videos for ATTN: and directing commercials for Triumph Motorcycles, Lexx's career is anything but conventional. He's been recognized across the board, with his films featured on Fox Soul and his scripts climbing the ranks of Coverfly's Red List. More recently, Lexx directed and produced a music documentary for Peter $un, under Red Bull's Filmmaker Launchpad program—a project that marks the latest chapter in his ever-growing body of work.  In this episode, we'll dive deep into Lexx's journey from North Carolina to Los Angeles, discuss the passion that fuels his filmmaking, and unpack how he's balancing personal legacy with industry ambition through his production company, Truss Films. Whether it's through the lens of a camera or the heartbeat of a drumline, Lexx is always exploring what it means to evolve, to create, and to tell stories that reflect who we are and who we're becoming.  Tune in for an intimate conversation with a filmmaker whose artistry is as multifaceted as the characters he brings to life. Lexx Truss's Website: trusslexx.comLexx Truss's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/trusslexx/?hl=enLexx Truss's Twitter: https://x.com/trusslexx?lang=enLexx Truss's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/trusslexxSupport the showVisual Intonation Website: https://www.visualintonations.com/Visual Intonation Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/visualintonation/Vante Gregory's Website: vantegregory.comVante Gregory's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/directedbyvante/ To support me on Patreon (thank you): patreon.com/visualintonations Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@visualintonation Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@directedbyvante

Richard Chevolleau is a native of Kingston, Jamaica. The multi-talented artist has honed his career over the years by living and working in New York, Los Angeles, Vancouver Calgary, Ottawa, and Toronto, where he currently resides. Richard, a Canadian Gemini and Actra award winning actor, is going to camera summer 2024 on his latest short film, “Marvelous Marvin.” Chevolleau brings his director/writer/producer skills to the table for the project. “Marvelous Marvin” is produced by Three Finger Film Productions Inc. Chevolleau's production company, executive produced by Richard Fagon & Angie Reid. The film stars Knyght Darius Jack, (Accused, Blues Clues, Grayson's Encounter) Angie Reid (Coroner, Slip, Promise Me) Shanice Banton (Degrassi: The Next Generation, Murdoch Mysteries, Lifetme's Her Stolen Past) and actor Michael Brown (Four Brothers, Hudson & Rex, Diggstown). Chevolleau's sensitive and heartwarming film is a coming-of-age drama. “Marvelous Marvin” follows the journey of quiet ten-year-old Marvin Marvellus, who lives in a small rural town. Marvin has caught the wrath of the schoolyard bully, Tiny, and endures daily bullying from the boy. Marvin feels defeated and helpless until one day he discovers his father's vintage superhero comics. He finds inspiration in the comic book heroes, leading him to believe that he can become a real-life superhero. He wears a make-shift cape and calls himself Marvelous Marvin. But, even with the name change and cape, Marvin realizes that defeating his bully isn't that simple. He finally confronts his tormentor, and by standing up to him, Marvin discovers that courage comes from within if you believe in yourself. Being a passionate and character focused actor, it's no surprise that Chevolleau will educate and inspire us with “Marvelous Marvin.” Chevolleau pays attention to his craft and knows you can not stay quiet, and every day is a journey. By directing, writing, and producing projects, Chevolleau makes sure his work is heard on his terms in the stories and characters he creates. Farewelling is a wildly creative psychological thriller made out of the deep frustrations the creators were feeling from the pandemic. The Director particularly wanted to focus on the challenges women specifically went through during the pandemic, and through the female lens. There were so many mental health challenges women faced, but yet due to prioritizing everyone else's well being above their own, they neglected their own mental health. Logline of film: In the midst of the pandemic and aftermath of her best friend's overdose, Jenna finds herself in crisis as she reunites with those still around her. Questions of her own ethics and morals surface as she grapples with the “why” of everything, eventually discovering what it takes to truly break us. Director/ Writer/Producer Rodes Phire. Executive Producer by Ty Gordon. “Jenna” is played by Cristen Coppen (Shameless).

Nate is the man behind the Hollywood magic! With years of experience on the set of General Hospital and steering his own production company, Nate is certainly akin to the Rough Days In Showbiz. He tells a story about a lengthy trek from a leisurely weekend trip back to Los Angeles full of missed flights, cancelled boats and rent-a-cars running on lots of gas station grub. All for one thing: to get back to his production job by Monday on time. He tells another story about shooting a feature film in a small town in the mountains having organized and planned the whole shoot to a “T” with the exception of one unforeseen diva…the heat. Then for the finale, he recounts an early job working on Zack Snyder's set as a PA where a studious coffee run turned into a tiny car crash resulting in the whole set's coffee exploding everywhere. This episode is certainly one for the Rough Day In Showbiz books! There's always excitement in the air when you feel like you're watching the emergence of a new creative talent on the scene and that's exactly how I felt with Cooper Raiff's directorial debut "Shithouse," which won the Grand Jury prize at this year's South By Southwest for Best Narrative feature. Conducting the duties as star, writer, director, producer and editor on the film, Cooper certainly had his hands full on this film and he was kind enough to spend a few minutes talking to us about that, what it was like working with Dylan Gelula, getting Jay Duplass on board early and more!
