Hey Star Power Fans! This time we have a very special guest. Dr. Bob Mansfield joins us to talk about the Cubs and a few other things.
This weekend marks the 30th anniversary of Optus gaining the second telecom carrier license and the introduction of competition. We speak with the founding CEO of Optus, Bob Mansfield about those early days and times subsequent heading the boards at Telstra and Vocus.
Apple's vehicle project, focused on building an autonomous Over the course of the last several years, Internal strife, leadership issues, and other problems impacted the car project and 2016 rumors even suggested Apple shelved plans for a car, but Apple has overcome development problems and still plans to develop a consumer-facing car. The Apple Car project has changed leadership several times and hundreds of employees have been laid off during the course of development, but it is now under the leadership of John Giannandrea, Apple's AI and machine learning chief, who took over the reins from Bob Mansfield after Mansfield retired in 2020. Over the course of the last few years, rumors indicated Apple had shifted its focus to autonomous driving software, but Apple in August 2018 rehired Tesla engineer Doug Field, leading to speculation that Apple was again be exploring a car option. In December 2020, we learned that Apple is indeed still working on a full car, and right now, plans to release a vehicle in three to six years. Reuters has said Apple is aiming for 2024, but Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes a car won't launch until 2025 to 2027 at the earliest. Apple may work with a manufacturing partner to produce the vehicles, and is developing next level battery technology to extend range and efficiency. Apple has held discussions with Hyundai and other automobile manufacturers, and will allegedly ink a deal by March with an aim to start production in 2024. Apple's car team is said to be aiming to create a self-driving vehicle that would let a user input their destination and be driven there with "little or no other engagement." Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes the car will be Apple's "next star product" with Apple able to offer "better integration of hardware, software and services" than potential competitors in the automotive market, with Apple-designed chips manufactured by TSMC. An EETimes analyst suggests the chip could be called the "C1" and could perhaps be based on the A12 Bionic processor. Kuo has said that Apple's initial vehicle chassis could be based on Hyundai's E-GMP electriv vehicle (BEV) platform. The Apple Car is likely to be marketed as a "very high-end" model or "significantly higher" than a standard electric vehicle. In June of 2017, Apple CEO Tim Cook spoke publicly about Apple's work on autonomous driving software, confirming the company's work in a rare candid moment. Apple doesn't often share details on what it's working on, but when it comes to the car software, it's harder to keep quiet because of regulations. "We're focusing on autonomous systems. It's a core technology that we view as very important. We sort of see it as the mother of all AI projects. It's probably one of the most difficult AI projects actually to work on." -- Apple CEO Tim Cook on Apple's plans in the car space. Since early 2017, Apple has been testing self-driving vehicles on public roads in California, using several 2015 Lexus RX450h SUVs leased from Hertz. The SUVs have been spotted on the streets of Cupertino host of sensors and cameras as Apple prepares its self-driving software. Apple has held talks with four suppliers of LiDAR sensors that are smaller, more affordable, and more easily mass produced than current LiDAR systems, which are too bulky and expensive for use in mass produced vehicles. Apple is aiming for a "revolutionary design" that could potentially be used in a future autonomous vehicle. Over the course of the last several years, there's been a lot of back and forth on the Apple Car project. Early rumors said that Apple would build a full car, but then leadership struggles, development issues, and internal strife led to rumors that the project had been scaled back and would instead focus on self-driving technology. I'm so excited to see the Apple Card in India about the Apple car is a very very very very very very very very important thing in India if that once successful means done everything done ok --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

One of the greatest lessons I learned about leadership came from the founding CEO of Optus, Bob Mansfield. It was a lesson that wasn't obvious at the time, but it certainly helped form my own leadership philosophy. It is also a philosophy shared by the great leaders, and that is, it is not about us!!

Is Apple serious about making a car? Apple has invested in Project Titan, their electric car and autonomous driving project which started in late 2014. In mid-2016, they put Bob Mansfield in charge. In 2018 they hired Doug Field, who previously oversaw the Model 3 program at Tesla. In early-mid 2019 Apple hired two Engineering VPs from Tesla. In 2019, Apple acquired Drive.ai, a startup focusing on autonomous driving. Why would Apple want to make a car? Supposedly it was one of Steve Job’s dream to make a car Apple and Google don’t want to be kicked out of the car. Tesla clearly has the advantage because Tesla is focused on electric cars and autonomous driving as their main life-and-death product. For Apple, it’s optional and doesn’t hold the same intensity as with Tesla. Further, Tesla has already crossed the chasm and their products are now going mainstream. Chung Kenneth Thanks Dave for your insights! I have a question. I am new stock investing and I've spent lots of hours of studying the business and I decided to invest long term. When I decided to invest, the stock was valued at $450. My wife and I thought, let's just wait until it drops a little but since the price was rising for some time. But the value has been skyrocketed and we kept saying let's just wait a bit... the price must come down a little bit, right? and the stock is valued at $880 as I am writing this post after trade hours. I feel so bad for the missed opportunities! Every time I want to invest, I keep thinking, the price must come down... I do believe in the company so I should invest. We feature Jeff Gamet, Managing Editor for The Mac Observer. The discussion begins with a pop culture session, covering the latest super hero shows, the selection of a new actor to play Superman on TV, and the curious differences between DC Comics TV shows and movies, which exist in what appear to be separate universes. Moving on to the tech world, Gene and Jeff talk about the recent appointment of Bob Mansfield to lead Apple's Project Titan, which reportedly is focusing on autonomous driving and a potential Apple Car. There's also a discussion of Apple's financials and the possibility that Apple is slowly starting to rise again from the doldrums. You'll also hear from ethical hacker Dr. Timothy Summers, President of Summers & Company, a cyber strategy and organizational design consulting firm, who will focus the main part of his discussion on the recent hacks of Democratic National Committee (DNC) emails, and how hackers might conspire to influence the U.S. election for President. Is there an object lesson here, that anything in an email is potentially vulnerable to hacking? And what about the security of voting machines? Can hackers manipulate the results? Dr. Summers will also discuss the Summer 2016 Olympics in Rio De Janeiro. Does the arrival of hundreds of thousands of people create the climate for hackers to steal money from tourists by taking over ATM machines and performing other criminal acts? How do you protect yourself from theft while traveling abroad?
