Welcome to Wednesday as we talk about the big finalization of new FTC rules that has NADA CEO Mike Stanton not mincing words. We also talk about a big stock purchase of Ford by one of their employees, as well as a Christmas rescue of a Cybertruck. The FTC has finalized a new rule yesterday, targeting deceptive car-buying practices, including junk fees and misleading promises, set to transform the automotive retail landscape by July 2024…for better or worseThe rule, set to go into effect on July 30, 2024, requires transparent pricing and prohibits non-beneficial add-ons, such as oil changes packages included in an EV contract, or nitrogen that isn't much different than normal airIt aims to protect consumers, particularly servicemembers, from deceptive practices costing $3.4 billion annually. The National Automobile Dealers Association criticizes the rule for adding complexity and increasing compliance costs, noting that The Center For Automotive Research suggests it will add 2 hours to the transaction time. This counters the FTCs claim that it will reduce time by 3 hoursThe same study suggests that Dealers face  $18 to $22 billion in extra compliance costs over a decade due to the FTC rule, far exceeding the agency's estimate of $1.36 to $1.57 billion.Mike Stanton, CEO of NADA said Tuesday: “This regulation is heavy-handed bureaucratic overreach and redundancy at its worst... The FTC made up data to support its claims, then rejected calls to slow down the process and test the effectiveness of its proposal with real consumers. We are exploring all options on how to keep this ill-conceived rule from taking effect.”Ford's chief electric vehicle, digital, and design officer, recently made the largest non-family investment in the company since 2004 purchasing $2 million in Ford stock, reflecting confidence in the automaker's future.Doug Field acquired 182,000 shares at $11.05 each which doubles the $1 million stock purchase by former COO Jim Farley in 2020, signaling optimism in Ford's direction.A Ford spokesperson commented, "Doug has a substantial ownership interest in Ford stock, which shows he believes in the company's future."A twitter user captured a Tesla Cybertruck's failed attempt to climb a snowy hill, requiring rescue by his friend's Ford Super Duty, raising questions about its off-road capabilities, and of course, embarrassing the new vehicle  The incident occurred in California's Stanislaus National Forest, where the Cybertruck struggled on a snowy incline and needed recovery by a Ford F-series.Factors influencing the failure include inadequate all-terrain tires for snow and a software issue preventing the use of "lockers" for better traction. Also absent from the Cybertruck were any pickup or recovery points, meaning the truck had to be pulled out by its control armsHosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

Hi I'm Doug Field, the CEO of the vibrant and dynamic East of England Co-op, a co-operative society that has thrived for over 150 years and continues to grow with passion and purpose. What sets our Society apart is our unwavering commitment to our members—over 280,000 strong—who are the lifeblood of our co-operative. We take immense pride in being the largest independent retail business in East Anglia, with a remarkable presence spanning more than 200 trading outlets across 70 diverse towns and villages in Norfolk, Suffolk, and Essex. As the CEO, I am entrusted with safeguarding and nurturing the legacy of our members, ensuring their interests are protected for generations to come. It is a responsibility I wholeheartedly embrace, driven by a deep-seated passion for the East of England and the remarkable communities we serve. Beyond the East of England Co-op, I am actively involved in initiatives that make a positive difference in our region. Previously I was Chair of the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership and am a Trustee of the esteemed Green Light Trust. I work to support and uplift local businesses and charitable causes. Before moving to East Anglia my career included four years at Christie Group plc as Group Financial Controller and six years at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in Bristol. Away from the professional realm, I find great joy and inspiration in the adventures that parenthood brings. My three school-age children keep me on my toes and fuel my imagination. Sports also hold a special place in my heart—I relish witnessing the successes (and failures) of my hometown sports teams, from Hull City's promotion to the Premier League to Hull FC's victorious rugby league Challenge Cup win in Cardiff. His Top TipAsk questions - Asking questions is a great way to get the most out of our lives and businesses. It encourages us to learn and share our thoughts, which helps build trust, encourages new ideas, and improves performance. From a leadership perspective asking questions also encourages others to participate in problem-solving and to take ownership of their own ideas. As a leader, it is important to be curious and open to new ideas. It is through asking questions that leaders can gain insight into what is important to their employees and gain a better understanding of what's happening on the ground. Finally a good question can begin to shift the way we perceive of think about something that might serve as a catalyst for change Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

We also talk about JLR offering Dealers more Land Rover Inventory for closing their Jaguar stores, as well as United Airlines first Air Taxis coming in 2025. Ford held a “teach in” yesterday to explain their new reporting structure to an audience of mostly reporters, which was perfect, because they started by explaining that they are set to lose $3B just this year on EVs. Last year's loss was $2.1BThey also reported $7B in earnings from their Ford Blue Division and $6B from Ford ProLast year the company changed their financial reporting structure to focus on the various business units vs. performance in different regions. The folks that designed those vehicles are at Ford.”What will luxury Dealers give up to get their hands on more of that high-margin luxury inventory? Imagine you're in the market for a full size pickup truck. And you like the F-150, America's best-selling vehicle for the past 40 years. But, wait, there's a new twist in the decision-making process. Should you get a gasoline-powered F-150 or the electric F-150 Lightning? To get answers, we turn to our guest today, Darren Palmer. Darren is the Vice President of Electric Vehicles in Ford's Model e division. Darren reports to Doug Field, recently recruited from Apple, and Field reports to CEO Jim Farley. Put another way, Darren is way up there at Ford and knows the Lightning specs and performance better than anyone on the planet. In this week's Driving With tDunne conversation, I ask Darren a simple but tough question. If I choose the Lighting over the gasoline F-150, what am I gaining -- and what am I giving up? Palmer shares some remarkable data bophut F-150 Lightning customers. More than half of them never owned a Ford before. And close to 80% had never owned an electric vehicle. Palmer makes the compelling argument that the Lightning is a new product category, fundamentally different from the F-150s powered by engines. HYUNDAI MOTOR PLANS 17 EVS, $16B INVESTMENT BY 2030 - Hyundai Motor Co said on Wednesday it planned to invest about 95.5 trillion won ($79.21 billion) through 2030, including about 19.4 trillion won ($16.10 billion) towards electric vehicle (EV) related businesses. It also said it plans to introduce 17 EVs in that timeframe, six from Genesis and 11 from the Hyundai brand. - three of those EVs would be sedans, along with six SUVs, a light commercial vehicle and one new type of model. It will begin sales of the Ioniq 6 later this year, followed by the Ioniq 7 in 2024. - 7% market share in the global EV market by 2030, with an annual sales target of 1.87 million vehicles - "Hyundai is allocating about 20% of its 95.5 trillion won investment to EV related businesses, which includes building new plants, EV charging stations and strategic alliances with battery manufacturers and the investment amount for EV does not seem too surprising or aggressive," said Eugene Investment & Securities analyst Lee Jae-il. We are betting on dealers for the long term," he told the Free Press. "I want to make that really clear. I'm not mincing words. We will have new standards and a new experience. But we learned a lot by watching Tesla." Original Source : https://eu.freep.com/story/money/cars/ford/2022/03/02/ford-ceo-jim-farley-unveils-plan-ev-model-e/6981544001/ FORD TO USE MODEL E NAME TESLA WANTED IN TRADEMARK FIGHT - Over the years, Ford has sued to keep other companies from using the Model E moniker because it sounds too much like the Model T, the car for which company founder Henry Ford is known to have built as the first affordable vehicle for the masses starting in 1908. - "'Ford and Tesla entered into a contract in 2010 in which, among other things, Tesla agreed not to register or use Model E. When Tesla later sought to register the Model E trademark, Ford insisted that Tesla abide by the parties' earlier agreement. The matter has been resolved amicably,'" a Ford spokesperson told CNNMoney in 2014. - "Choosing the name is very intentional. We keep telling people this is the biggest transformation of the company since the scaling of the Model T," Farley told the Free Press."We knew that Model e was going to be important at Ford Motor Company," he said. "Did we know it was going to be for this announcement, three or four years ago? Absolutely not. We protected it for a darn good reason." Original Source : https://eu.freep.com/story/money/cars/ford/2022/03/02/ford-model-e-electric-tesla-trademark/9339917002/ FORD SPLITS INTO ELECTRIC AND GAS DIVISIONS TO SPEED UP TRANSITION - Ford Motor has decided the best way to make the transition to electric vehicles is to transform itself first. - the automaker said it had reorganized its auto operations into two distinct businesses — one that makes its gasoline-powered vehicles and focuses on maximizing profits and another that develops and ramps up production of electric models and aims for rapid growth. - Ford's chief executive, Jim Farley, said in an interview that the two businesses required different skills and mind-sets that would clash and hinder each area if they remained parts of one organization. - Mr. Farley said Ford would spend $50 billion on electric vehicles between 2022 and 2026. It previously planned to spend $30 billion in the five years ending in 2025. It plans to spend $5 billion on E.V.s this year, double the 2021 total. - Ford's reorganization is one of the most sweeping taken by a traditional automaker in preparation for the transition to electric vehicles. Mr. Farley said the plan had come together after he and other top Ford executives noticed stark differences in the two business areas. - In making gas-powered vehicles, Ford must focus on reducing costs and generating the profits it needs to fund its E.V. plans. Over the next four years - The electric business, in contrast, will have to spend heavily to develop software and technologies and to ramp up production quickly to achieve economies of scale. Ford aims to produce two million electric vehicles a year by 2026. Net income this year is expected to be between $9.4 billion and $10.8 billion, also in line with its $10 billion profit in 2021, GM said. Barra said the company is not reinstating its dividend, which the automaker cut during the early days of the coronavirus pandemic in April 2020. She said the company plans to use the saved capital for accelerating, even increasing, its $35 billion in investments in electric and autonomous vehicles through 2025. “We are pulling ahead significant investment into the 2022-to-2025 time frame, and we will share more details as we further refine our plan,” Barra told analysts during a call Tuesday. the company will announce a third plant to produce battery-electric trucks in the foreseeable future as well as the location of a fourth production facility for battery cells with LG https://www.cnbc.com/2022/02/01/general-motors-gm-earnings-q4-2021.html 2021 FULL-YEAR AND Q4 LETTER TO SHAREHOLDERS Since 2020, we have announced investments totaling more than $14 billion in 10 sites across North America to increase our manufacturing capacity in the region to more than 1 million EVs annually by the end of 2025. In late 2021, we opened Factory ZERO in Detroit and Hamtramck, our first plant dedicated to Ultium products, including the GMC HUMMER EV We are converting a plant in Orion Township, Michigan, to EV truck production to help provide us with a total of 600,000 units of EV truck capacity in North America by the end of 2025. Ultium Cells, our joint venture with LG Energy Solution, announced its third U.S. cell plant More than 110,000 Silverado EVs are reserved so far, including reservations from more than 240 fleet operators, and the numbers keep growing. FedEx Express, Merchants Fleet and Walmart, are adopting BrightDrop's electric vehicles and technology to make their delivery operations more efficient. All told, we have more than 25,000 production reservations for BrightDrop cargo vans. Customer interest in the LYRIQ is now so strong that we will forgo a new round of reservations and begin taking customer orders soon after the Debut Edition launches in March. Equinox EV is compellingly new, and it's affordable, with an estimated starting MSRP of $30,000. The efficiencies created by the Ultium Platform are a key reason why we can deliver truly affordable EVs like the Equinox. https://media.gm.com/media/us/en/gm/home.detail.html/content/Pages/news/emergency_news/2022/shareholders/q4-21-ceo-letter-to-shareholders.html FORD WILL SPEND UP TO $20 BILLION MORE IN SHIFT TO ELECTRIC VEHICLES Ford will spend as much as $20 billion to reorganize its business for the electric future, according to Bloomberg. The automaker is also mulling whether to spin off some of its EV business as a special acquisition company (SPAC) in order to attract more investment. Ford has previously stated that it would spend $30 billion on electric and autonomous vehicle development by 2025. Ford is reportedly putting former Apple and Tesla executive Doug Field in charge of the reorganization, which will include converting its factories from gas-powered to electric vehicle production and hiring more engineers. Ford recently announced that it was doubling production of its upcoming electric pickup truck, the F-150 Lightning, and tripling production for the Mustang Mach-E, with the expectation that it will reach over 200,000 units per year by 2023. Ford's electric delivery van, the E-Transit, also goes on sale early this year. He had a previous stint at Apple, where he was once the VP of Mac hardware engineering, but he left the company in 2013 to become Tesla's chief vehicle engineer, where he helped oversee the troublesome development of the Model 3 sedan. https://www.theverge.com/2022/2/1/22912841/ford-electric-vehicle-reorganization-investment U.S. EV CHARGING NETWORK IS MORE ROBUST BUT PROVIDER DIFFERENCES REMAIN significant differences in reliability and performance remain between providers, an industry ranking by engineering consulting firm umlaut found. The group tested chargers by Volkswagen's (VOWG_p.DE) Electrify America, ChargePoint (CHPT.N), EVgo (EVGO.O), Blink Charging (BLNK.O), EVconnect, Greenlots and Tesla's (TSLA.O) Superchargers across seven U.S. states in September. Electrify America reached the highest score in the ranking, followed by Tesla's Supercharger and ChargePoint, said umlaut, which was acquired by Accenture (ACN.N) in October. The ranking considered the technical performance of chargers, as well as the charging station environment, such as lighting, roofing and nearby amenities. It also took into account the performance of charging networks' apps The group used a Tesla Model 3 and a Ford (F.N) Mach-E for its 2021 tests Last year, EVs accounted for around 2% of all new car sales https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/us-ev-charging-network-is-more-robust-provider-differences-remain-2022-01-31/ MAGNA EDRIVES HIT THE MARKET ON VOLKSWAGEN MEB PLATFORM The HASCO Magna Electric Drive Systems Co., Ltd. Diess said the secondary leases would allow the company to recycle the valuable battery packs into new uses, including home power centers and fast chargers. - “In Europe, we are trying to get a second lease and even a third lease, and keep the car in our hands,” Diess said. “Battery life we think today is about 1,000 charging cycles and around 350,000 kilometers [about 215,000 miles], something like that. So, the battery would probably live longer than the car, and we want to get hold of the battery. We don't want to give the battery away.” Original Source : https://cleantechnica.com/2021/09/08/volkswagen-says-it-will-lease-used-evs-to-maintain-control-over-its-batteries/ NEW BRITISHVOLT BATTERY CELL FACTORY UNDER CONSTRUCTION - Works have begun at Britishvolt's new battery cell factory in Blyth, Northumberland. The demand for Porsche's all-electric four-door sedan outpaced the company's production capacity for 2021 in the first quarter alone.  “Our original production capacity for the Taycan was 20,000 units this year – we've sold that many in the first half of the year,” Blume said during a panel discussion at the IAA Mobility show in Munich. The Porsche CEO noted that “incoming orders are huge,” including in China. - The Taycan's popularity continued to accelerate in Q2 2021, with Porsche exceeding all the deliveries in 2020 in just the first half of the quarter. The accelerated popularity of the Taycan was partly due to the new variants released of the all-electric four-door. Ford Motor Co rose +0.47% after the company announced that it had hired former Tesla Inc (+2.64%) executive Doug Field to take over as chief advanced technology and embedded systems officer, which will put him in charge of next-generation technology in Ford automobiles. Mr Field had been serving as the vice president of “special products” at Apple after previously working at Tesla as senior vice president of engineering. The Nasdaq inched +0.07% higher to 15,374.33, securing its 36th record closing high of 2021. It's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. ELON MUSK REVEALS TRI-MOTOR MODEL S"Tesla CEO Elon Musk arrived on stage in typically modest fashion — by hurtling around the Fremont test track at 100-plus mph in the new all-electric Plaid (see video above). Speaking to a small but enthusiastic crowd, Musk spent the next half-hour running through the car's plethora of features" said Digital Trends: "The tri-motor, 1,020-horsepower Model S Plaid sits at the top of the Model S range and comes with a serious boost to its performance specs, including a top speed of 200 mph and an astonishingly zippy zero-to-60 time of just 1.99 seconds. The first deliveries of the Model S Plaid come nine months after Tesla started taking orders for the new vehicle, which, at just a shade over $130,000, is the company's most expensive production vehicle to date. Musk told the crowd the automaker is ready to deliver the first 25 Model S Plaid cars now, increasing to several hundred vehicles a week “soon,”" "The 1,000-vehicle-per-week run rate is half of the maximum combined output of Model S and Model X previously reached in 2018. Musk did not mention when production of the updated Model X would begin, but reservation holders have recently been told to expect their vehicles in October, at the earliest" reported Fox Business: "The price of the Model S Plaid, which Tesla claims is the world's quickest car, was also increased by $10,000 just before the event to $129,990, but existing reservation holders will still be able to get theirs for the original price. A less powerful $79,990 Model S is also available for order, but the start of production has not been announced. The Tesla website lists the estimated delivery date for new orders as September-October." On the price rise, Rob Mauer from Tesla Daily noted: "Strangely, Tesla still lists the price of the "Plaid" Model X at $119,990 — $10,000 cheaper than the comparable Model S. As a larger vehicle, historically the Model X has been more expensive than the Model S. This is evident on the base "Long Range" trims of each vehicle, where the Model X starts at $89,990 compared to the Model S at $79,990." https://www.digitaltrends.com/news/tesla-delivers-new-model-s-plaid-car-to-first-customers/ https://www.foxbusiness.com/lifestyle/tesla-model-s-plaid-production https://www.thestreet.com/tesla/news/tesla-raises-prices-ahead-of-model-s-delivery-event-tsla TESLA WARNS NEW MODEL S PLAID WON'T HIT ADVERTISED 200 MPH"Tesla is warning that its new Model S Plaid won't hit its advertised 200 mph top speed at launch since it will need a tire and wheel upgrade this fall. says electrek: "But now we learn that the new Model S Plaid won't actually hit the advertised 200 mph (322 km/h). Tesla added a note to its online configurator stating that it will require new wheels and tires. The indicated Plaid top speed requires proper wheels and tires which will be available in Fall 2021. The automaker hasn't released much information about the Model S Plaid's wheels and tires other than two wheel options. It's unclear what wheel and tire combination is going to be needed to achieve 200 mph, but tires have speed ratings and 200 mph tires are fairly rare (and expensive). Tesla also warns that the 21″ Arachnid wheel package reduces the expected range of the Model S Plaid to 350 miles (down from 390 miles) and it costs an extra $4,500." https://electrek.co/2021/06/10/tesla-warns-new-model-s-plaid-advertised-200-mph-tire-wheel-upgrade/ And talking of range reductions, the new Model S Long Range. Elon Musk said on stage the car had 412 mile range,  which matches what they had been advertising. However after the presentation the website team lowered it to 405 miles. So $79,990 a 7 miles less range, not a deal breaker. ELON MUSK DEMOS CYBERPUNK 2077 ON NEW TESLA"Elon Musk teased that Tesla's new Model S Plaid would be capable of running Cyberpunk 2077 earlier this year, and he's now demonstrated the car's “PS5-level performance.” The refreshed Model S includes a new Tesla infotainment system, powered by AMD's Ryzen processor and a discrete AMD RDNA 2 GPU." reports The Verge: "We only saw a brief demo of Cyberpunk 2077 running at high frame rates on the $130,000 Model S Plaid during Tesla's event, alongside a closer look at the updated UI on the infotainment system. You might be wondering why you'd need PS5-level gaming performance in your car" https://www.theverge.com/2021/6/11/22529210/tesla-model-s-plaid-cyberpunk-demo-ps5-performance APPLE HIRES COFOUNDER OF EV STARTUP CANOO AND BMW VETERAN"Apple has hired Ulrich Kranz, a former BMW executive and cofounder of autonomous electric vehicle startup Canoo, to work on its electric car, Bloomberg first reported. Apple hired Kranz in recent weeks, about a month after he stepped down as CEO of Canoo, people familiar with the situation told Bloomberg. He would report to Doug Field, formerly of Tesla, who heads up Apple's electric vehicle project, the people said" according to Business Insider: "Kranz worked at BMW for 30 years, and was a senior vice-president for around half of that time. While at the company he worked on the development of Minis, sports cars, and the company's first SUV. He also led BMW's Project I, which designed electric vehicles for use in large cities." https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-electric-car-vehicle-canoo-bmw-ulrich-kranz-car-ev-2021-6?r=US&IR=T FORD F-150 LIGHTNING EXCEEDS 100,000 RESERVATIONS"Ford has confirmed that the total number of reservations of the Ford F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck exceeded 100,000! The milestone was achieved in about three weeks since the unveiling on May 19, 2021 (see the debut post and features here) and it's a huge success." according to InsideEVs: "That would explain why Ford is now considering also a smaller electric pickup, possibly based on the all-new Maverick model. Customers want electric pickups - surely not all, but it's such a big market segment that demand is probably overwhelming. The commercial version starts at $39,974 (MSRP) with the Standard-Range Battery, while the Extended-Range Battery increases the price by $10,000 to $49,974. " https://insideevs.com/news/513265/ford-f150-lightning-100000-reservations/  ELECTRIFY AMERICA TAPS INTO CONNECTED HOME CHARGING"Electrify America is expanding its focus from public charging to the place most EV drivers charge the most—at home. On sale now, the HomeStation Level 2 AC charging station is Electrify America's most serious effort yet to gain a foothold in home charging, where EV owners typically charge 80% or more of the time." says Green Car Reports: "The HomeStation is part of Electrify America's home-charging business, dubbed Electrify Home, announced in 2020. The station itself was announced earlier this year, but is only now going on sale through Electrify Home's website or Amazon, priced at $649, Electrify America announced Tuesday in a press release. With 9.6 kilowatts of power at 40 amps, Electrify America claims the HomeStation can add 33 miles of range per hour. It can be plugged into a NEMA 14-50 outlet or hardwired, according to the company. A WiFi connection allows the HomeStation to sync with the Electrify America smartphone app, allowing users to remotely start and stop charging. Amazon Alexa integration will soon be added as well, Electrify America said." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1132523_electrify-america-taps-into-connected-home-charging  QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM What noises, if any, should electric vehicles make (inside or outside the vehicle) Email me your thoughts and I'll read them out on Sunday – hello@evnewsdaily.com   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast. And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing. Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I'll catch you tomorrow and remember…there's no such thing as a self-charging hybrid. PREMIUM PARTNERSPHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE BRAD CROSBYPORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATIAUDI CINCINNATI EASTVOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNELRICHARD AT RSEV.CO.UK – FOR BUYING AND SELLING EVS IN THE UKEMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/

Hundreds of engineers are still working on core automobile technology at the firm. Apple recently also hired former top executives from Tesla.

Apple's vehicle project, focused on building an autonomous Over the course of the last several years, Internal strife, leadership issues, and other problems impacted the car project and 2016 rumors even suggested Apple shelved plans for a car, but Apple has overcome development problems and still plans to develop a consumer-facing car. The Apple Car project has changed leadership several times and hundreds of employees have been laid off during the course of development, but it is now under the leadership of John Giannandrea, Apple's AI and machine learning chief, who took over the reins from Bob Mansfield after Mansfield retired in 2020. Over the course of the last few years, rumors indicated Apple had shifted its focus to autonomous driving software, but Apple in August 2018 rehired Tesla engineer Doug Field, leading to speculation that Apple was again be exploring a car option. In December 2020, we learned that Apple is indeed still working on a full car, and right now, plans to release a vehicle in three to six years. Reuters has said Apple is aiming for 2024, but Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes a car won't launch until 2025 to 2027 at the earliest. Apple may work with a manufacturing partner to produce the vehicles, and is developing next level battery technology to extend range and efficiency. Apple has held discussions with Hyundai and other automobile manufacturers, and will allegedly ink a deal by March with an aim to start production in 2024. Apple's car team is said to be aiming to create a self-driving vehicle that would let a user input their destination and be driven there with "little or no other engagement." Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes the car will be Apple's "next star product" with Apple able to offer "better integration of hardware, software and services" than potential competitors in the automotive market, with Apple-designed chips manufactured by TSMC. An EETimes analyst suggests the chip could be called the "C1" and could perhaps be based on the A12 Bionic processor. Kuo has said that Apple's initial vehicle chassis could be based on Hyundai's E-GMP electriv vehicle (BEV) platform. The Apple Car is likely to be marketed as a "very high-end" model or "significantly higher" than a standard electric vehicle. In June of 2017, Apple CEO Tim Cook spoke publicly about Apple's work on autonomous driving software, confirming the company's work in a rare candid moment. Apple doesn't often share details on what it's working on, but when it comes to the car software, it's harder to keep quiet because of regulations. "We're focusing on autonomous systems. It's a core technology that we view as very important. We sort of see it as the mother of all AI projects. It's probably one of the most difficult AI projects actually to work on." -- Apple CEO Tim Cook on Apple's plans in the car space. Since early 2017, Apple has been testing self-driving vehicles on public roads in California, using several 2015 Lexus RX450h SUVs leased from Hertz. The SUVs have been spotted on the streets of Cupertino host of sensors and cameras as Apple prepares its self-driving software. Apple has held talks with four suppliers of LiDAR sensors that are smaller, more affordable, and more easily mass produced than current LiDAR systems, which are too bulky and expensive for use in mass produced vehicles. Apple is aiming for a "revolutionary design" that could potentially be used in a future autonomous vehicle. Over the course of the last several years, there's been a lot of back and forth on the Apple Car project. Early rumors said that Apple would build a full car, but then leadership struggles, development issues, and internal strife led to rumors that the project had been scaled back and would instead focus on self-driving technology. I'm so excited to see the Apple Card in India about the Apple car is a very very very very very very very very important thing in India if that once successful means done everything done ok --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

According to one source familiar with Hyundai-Kia strategy, “Chung has made it clear, mobility is the future of the company.”  That’s important because the Apple Car will be fully autonomous." reports Phil LeBeau: " Sources familiar with Apple’s interest in working with Hyundai say the tech giant wants to build the “Apple Car” in North America with an established automaker willing to allow Apple to control the software and hardware that will go into the vehicle. In 2018, Apple lured Doug Field, then Tesla’s senior VP of engineering, back to Apple where he had previously worked, presumably to work on self-driving cars. Apple has also hired myriad other former Tesla employees, including Michael Schwekutsch, now Senior Director of Engineering for the Special Projects Group at Apple and formerly Tesla Vice President of Engineering."     Katie Huberty, Morgan Stanley: "Smartphones are a $500bn annual TAM. Apple has about one-third of this market. The mobility market is $10 trillion. So Apple would only need a 2% share of this market to be the size of their iPhone business"   "Setting up a car plant can cost billions of dollars and take years, likely the reason why Apple is talking to potential partners." says Automotive News Europe: "Other technology companies seeking to expand into cars have also sought partnerships. Taiwanese iPhone assembler Foxconn Technology Group said last month it is setting up a venture with Chinese carmaker Zhejiang Geely Holding Group to provide production and consulting services to global automotive enterprises."   "According to a new report from a longtime Apple analyst, it sounds like Apple has picked Hyundai’s E-GMP platform as the base for its upcoming electric car." according to Gizmodo: "In his most recent note, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo lended more credence to the rumors that Apple is planning to partner with Hyundai for the production of its vehicle. Meanwhile, it’s an open secret that Volkswagen is developing an R-badged hot hatch version of the ID.3, likely to feature four-wheel drive and in excess of 300bhp."   Mr Griffiths told Top Gear: "“I would say we call it ‘impulse’; you can have power on demand. You have pure acceleration and then when you need it, a push-to-pass button to go faster. Things like ‘boost on demand’, the sporty suspension, the steering, the brakes, the whole handling experience. And we’re looking to do even higher powered versions of the Cupra El-Born. I’ve driven both [the ID.3 and the El-Born] and I think the Cupra is ‘a Cupra’. It is important that the Cupra stays authentic, in terms of handling. Pure electric cars that are designed in a different way, and when you get into cornering, handling, braking, steering, I think there’s a big amount of differentiation you can create there.”   https://www.topgear.com/car-news/electric/cupras-el-born-hot-hatch-will-have-push-pass-boost-button   VW ID.4 ENTRY-LEVEL VERSIONS NOW UP FOR PRE-SALE "After the pre-sale of the special edition VW ID.4 1ST, VW is now starting the pre-sale of other models of the ID.4 – this includes versions with a smaller battery. Deliveries to customers in Europe and China are scheduled to begin in March, and in the USA from the middle of the year." repotrs electrive: "The three newly added trims ‘Pure’, ‘City’ and ‘Style’ all have got the 52 kWh battery and are powered by a 125 kW engine. Until now, the electric car was only being offered with a 77 kWh battery and a 150 kW engine. In Germany, with the Pure equipment line, the model costs 38,450 euros before and 28,880 euros after subsidies. With the revealing of these other ID.4 versions, VW reiterates its goal of building as many as 1.5 million electric cars per year by 2025. "   https://www.electrive.com/2021/02/02/vw-id-4-entry-level-versions-now-up-for-pre-sale/   ELON MUSK INTERVIEW WITH SANDY MUNRO "The first subject was probably the toughest one, in which Munro mentioned the problems he had with the first teardown he did on a Tesla, a 2018 Model 3. The engineer also found problems with the 2021 car, especially regarding panel gaps, and he mentioned he and Cory Steuben found an absolutely pristine one." says InsideEVs: "Musk told him they have tried to perfect production and admitted for the first time that the Model 3 paint job did not always have the necessary time to dry. This could explain the vehicle's issues in multiple units, born from the “production hell” Tesla had with the Model 3. The issue is now apparently gone."   Elon Musk said on why they moved to a single rear cast piece: "The organizational structure errors, they manifest themselves in the product. We’ve got probably the best material science team in the world at Tesla. Engineers would ask what’s the best material for this purpose...and they got like 50 different answers. And they’re all true individually, but they were not true collectively. When you try to join all these dissimilar alloys...you’ve got gaps that you’ve got to seal, and you’ve got to join these things, and some of them need to be joined with rivets, some of them need to be joined with spot welds, some of them need to be joined with resin or resin and spot welds. Frankly, it looks like a bit of a Frankenstein situation when you look at it all together. That might be the most painful job in the factory, is spackling on the sealant.”   On the 12v battery: "With the new S/X, we are also are finally transitioning to a Li-ion 12-volt battery. It has way more capacity and the cycle life matches the main battery pack. We should have done that before, but it’s great that we are doing it now"   https://insideevs.com/news/485412/elon-musk-talks-sandy-munro/   TESLA WORKING ON UNHACKABLE KEYFOB According to a new filing with FCC, Tesla are looking to use Radio Ultra Wideband in the key fob. Tesla wrote: "The main objective of a UWB ranging device is to provide a distance estimate, which serves as a tight upper bound for the actual distance between a sender and a receiver. In other words, the distance estimate is close to the actual distance and may be longer than the actual distance, but not shorter. In the PKE context this means that the key is not further away from the car than the estimated distance. The distance estimate is based on a Time of Flight measurement, and is immune to relay attacks. This drastically improves PHY layer security compared to an RSSI based distance measurement, which is susceptible to relay station attacks.   A UWB receiver can give an accurate distance estimate, when there is a direct line‐of sight (LOS) propagation path between the sender and the receiver. All other propagation paths are caused by reflections, hence have a longer time of flight, and will lead to a looser upper bound for the distance."   TESLA CANCELS MODEL Y LONG RANGE RWD "Tesla enthusiasts who pre-ordered the Model Y Long Range Rear Wheel-Drive variant are being told to choose another configuration of the company’s all-electric crossover. Tesla is honoring its Full Self-Driving suite’s price from the date of the pre-order, however, giving a slight discount to owners who planned to equip their LR RWD Model Y with the company’s semi-autonomous driving suite." sayx TEslarati: "The variant was the planned replacement for the Standard Range RWD Model Y after CEO Elon Musk stated that the configuration had less than 250 miles of range, a number that was “unacceptably low.” Musk announced the cancellation on July 12, 2020, but stated that Tesla would reduce pricing on the Model Y’s Dual Motor AWD variant and create the Long Range RWD configuration as a replacement. The reason for the cancelation is unknown, but it is not the first time Tesla has axed variants before release. "   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-modely-y-lr-rwd-canceled-fsd-price-honor/   PORSCHE IS 3D PRINTING ELECTRIC DRIVE HOUSINGS THAT ARE LIGHTER AND STRONGER "Porsche announced that it had been 3D printing prototype housings for electric drives that were stronger, lighter, and much quicker to manufacture. The engine-gearbox units produced using this method were even able to pass all of the company’s quality and stress tests without issue." says electrek: "Porsche manufactures the housings using a 3D printing method called laser metal fusion, which entails a laser beam heating and melting a powder surface depending on the desired contours. This method allows Porsche to produce an engine gearbox that is both 10% lighter and 100% stronger because of the inherent lattice structures. Another significant upside to manufacturing parts this way is the ease and speed of creating new components or making changes to existing ones. For example, an entirely new part can be designed and then physically printed very quickly with no need to do things such as create new tooling to manufacture the part."   https://electrek.co/2021/02/02/porsche-is-3d-printing-electric-drive-housings-that-are-lighter-and-stronger-than-conventional-ones/   EV PLATFORM FOR COACHBUILDING "England-based Watt Electric Vehicles hopes to breathe new life into the moribund coachbuilding industry by offering low-volume manufacturers a turn-key EV platform." says Autoblog: "he architecture integrates the battery, the running gear, all electronics, and the basic structure in one neat package; all that's missing is the body. It's built with aluminum to help offset the battery's weight, and it can underpin a panoply of vehicles ranging from a small sports car to a large bus, according to Watt."   https://www.autoblog.com/2021/02/02/watt-electric-car-chassis-coachbuilders/   NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK Have you seen the social media meme of putting two photo’s side by side and titling them ‘how to started’ and ‘how it’s going’. Is Apple serious about making a car? Apple has invested in Project Titan, their electric car and autonomous driving project which started in late 2014. In mid-2016, they put Bob Mansfield in charge. In 2018 they hired Doug Field, who previously oversaw the Model 3 program at Tesla. In early-mid 2019 Apple hired two Engineering VPs from Tesla. In 2019, Apple acquired Drive.ai, a startup focusing on autonomous driving. Why would Apple want to make a car? Supposedly it was one of Steve Job’s dream to make a car Apple and Google don’t want to be kicked out of the car. They know cars are going autonomous, and whoever controls the car experience can direct the attention of passengers in the vehicles, which is a huge market opportunity. Tesla clearly has the advantage because Tesla is focused on electric cars and autonomous driving as their main life-and-death product. For Apple, it’s optional and doesn’t hold the same intensity as with Tesla. Further, Tesla has already crossed the chasm and their products are now going mainstream. Thursday 17th May 2018. PORSCHE CAYENNE E-HYBRID REVIEW The first reviews are in for the Porsche Cayenne e-hybrid, ahead of the move of the legendary 911 to electrified power, so whether purists like it or not, battery power is here to stay. EVO has been my go-to magazine for performance car reviews for a long time and they're impressed: "There are now four driving modes to choose from: full electric (E-Power), Hybrid Auto, Sport and Sport Plus, all of which can be selected via the same rotational switch fitted to the steering wheel of Porsche’s range of sports cars. The default mode on start-up is full electric, which offers a range of between 14 to 27 miles on a full charge (up from 22 miles, with a full charge taking around 8 hours on a house hold plug). Switch to Hybrid mode and the Cayenne will adapt its use of the powertrain to suit the individual driving style of whoever is behind the wheel, switching between full electric and petrol-electric as and when it needs to, and with uncanny smoothness, too." As for environmental credentials, that's always hard for a gas burning SUV to argue, but: "The Cayenne E-Hybrid will return a theoretical 88mpg on the combined cycle while emitting just 72g/km (putting it 3g/km under the free congestion charge limit)."   TESLA WILL USE SIX-DAY SHUTDOWN TO FIX MODEL 3 ASSEMBLY LINE PROBLEMS We know Model 3 production line shut downs are coming, and now we have more details. Tesla will pause production at its California factory for six days at the end of the May to improve the Model 3 assembly line says inside sources who have spoken to Reuters. So far we've seen shut down in February and April to upgrade the factory. Musk has said the planned stoppages are intended to give the company time to perform upgrades that will help it reach a goal of building 6,000 vehicles per week by the end of June.   NISSAN LEAF NOW WITHOUT ENTRY-LEVEL VISIA TRIM Pedro at Push EVs has noticed something on the European Nissan websites: "At least in Portugal, Spain and France you can no longer order the entry-level Visia of the Nissan Leaf. With fewer trim levels to choose from, production complexity and costs are reduced. No need to waste time and resources to produce a trim level that customers don’t want. Acenta has always been the most popular trim level on the Nissan Leaf and it’s now the entry-level trim. I see this as good news, furthermore Nissan is not only adjusting the trim levels, but also the prices. Let’s see the evolution in Portugal." Indeed the UK Nissan site is also reporting the Acenta as the base model now with no sign of the Visia trim. The base model Acenta is from £25,190, the N-Connecta adds around view monitor, heated seats, 17” alloys wheels, privacy glass and electric door mirrors for £26,890. You can go up one more step to Tekna for ProPILOT assist, BOSE premium audio, leather front and rear heated seats, Full LED auto headlights and electronic parking brake from £28,390. They all of course come with e-pedal.   THE 'AUTOPILOT BUDDY' IS CRAZY Regardless of whether you think Autopilot is a good name for Teslas driving assist technology, implying it does more than it actually does, they do make it as idiot proof as possible. You are required to keep your hands on the steering wheel when it deems assistance necessary, and if you do not, it gives you a visual warning on the dashboard followed by an audible one. And if you really let it go too long, the car comes to a stop. But what if you could avoid all the need for being aware about what a two ton fast moving lump of metal and batteries was doing. That's exactly what one idiot thought when they designed a product for other idiots to buy. Welcome to Autopilot Buddy. It will run you $179 and is magnetic plastic that will attach to your wheel to fool the car into thinking your hands are on it. Now there's really nothing stopping you swapping seats - yes someone was recently banned from driving for doing that - or making youtube videos off you hanging out of the window at seed - yes someone has done that. Their website says: "Tesla owners were searching for ways to hack the autopilot or extend the autopilot features without voiding the warranty. “Autopilot Buddy” allows early adopters to once again enjoy autopilot for longer durations, by reducing or turning off the autopilot check-in warning." You would only buy this product to be less attentive at the wheel.   ELON MUSK HIRES TESLA INTERNS WHO HELPED SOLVE MODEL 3 PRODUCTION ISSUES Getting a Tesla internship is a dream for many engineering students, but what about when you spot something in the Model 3 process which improves production? In this case, it lands you a job offer from Elon Musk. According to Matthew Lane, one of the interns, speaking on CBC Radio: "“Essentially, it was a gating problem with the Model 3 production ramp. What had happened was we saw an opportunity to solve the problem. We came up with our own idea, and we actually sort of crashed the meeting with Elon himself and presented the idea. And, after speaking with him and one of his VPs, Doug Field, they essentially said ‘This is a good idea, but here’s the problem we are facing right now, so you guys go talk with us.’ And it snowballed from there,” he said. Mark Comeau added: "“So about a month and a half after that, we worked on this issue, brought things online. And then, literally at 10 a.m. Monday morning, the week after we’re finished, we received a message saying ‘Hey, head to Nevada to the Gigafactory.’ And, a five-hour car drive later, we arrived in Nevada, with a whole new situation and a whole new set of problems to address. “Elon is the type of CEO that is actually hands-on in the factory floor. He’s not one of those that sits on the ivory tower and just gets reports. He’s actually on the line, seeing the issues himself in person, and seeing what contributions people are making, and what the issues are. He doesn’t like to hear things second-hand. He likes everything first-hand knowledge. “So this issue had caused some delays with the production, so of course it was one thing that was always on his radar, and once we had figured it out and got it up and running reliably, he came by, and he had us walk through it. It’s probably one of the most unnerving experiences ever, because he’s the CEO of the company and here we are, just two interns. And, he’s basically like ‘Yep, you’ve got to stay.’”   NISSAN’S SOLAR AND BATTERY STORAGE SYSTEM HITS UK MARKET "Nissan’s solar and battery storage system is now available to buy for homeowners across the UK" according to Energy Live News: "consumers can choose to buy either new or second life batteries from Nissan EVs – the firm adds these will be used to give increased independence from the national grid and electricity suppliers as well as the ability to generate, store and manage energy for use overnight. The cost of the solar and storage package starts at £3,881."   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Tuesday 3rd April 2018.  ELON’S LATE, LATE APRIL FOOLS And so the tradition goes, you must play your April Fools joke before Midday. Well they’re the rules and, if we can learn one thing from Elon Musk, he doesn’t play by the rules. Well at least not anyone else’s apart from his own. And thus late on the 1st April he sent out his jokes about Tesla. If you missed it, he said: “Despite intense efforts to raise money, including a last-ditch mass sale of Easter Eggs, we are sad to report that Tesla has gone completely and totally bankrupt. So bankrupt, you can't believe it.” He later followed up by tweeting an image of himself “passed out against a Tesla Model 3”, apparently using Tesla packaging as a blanket. He later tweeted: There are many chapters of bankruptcy and, as critics so rightly pointed out, Tesla has them *all*, including Chapter 14 and a half (the worst one).” After a shocker of a week, some would argue the worst in years if you look at the stock price fall, he’s got a sense of humour that few other CEO’s would have. And that’s probably why Tesla has so many fanboys and fangirls.   IS 2,000/WEEK A SUCCESS OR FAIL FOR MODEL 3? And not only if he CEO, but it appears he’s the new Head of Model 3 Production. According to Amir Efrati on Twitter, who in his biog says formerly of the WSJ and has a Twitter blue mark, claims Elon musk has taken direct control of the Model 3 production line. The article claims: “ Musk appears to have pushed aside the company’s senior vice president of engineering, Doug Field, who had been overseeing manufacturing in recent months. Until the move by Mr. Musk, Mr. Field had been consolidating power since joining Tesla from Apple in 2013. Mr. Musk had given Mr. Field several chances to raise output, but the company has repeatedly missed its Model 3 production targets over the past year, including after Mr. Field took over manufacturing.” At 12:01am Eastern yesterday, he sent an email Tesla staff about the Model 3, ahead of the earning call, saying the ramp up to this level has been “extremely difficult,”but Musk noted “we are finally here. It took five years to reach the 2000/week production rate for S and X combined, but only nine months to achieve that output with Model 3,” he wrote. And by finally here he means if they just hit the production rate of 2,000 Model 3s a week. It was back in January that we heard they were pushing back the 5,000 a week target by one quarter, and by now they should have been making 2,500 a week. And that’s the curious thing about the targets, which everyone has an opinion on, so where do you stand? Should Tesla and Elon just have said we play to make 1.5k a week in Q1. That way they would have smashed the target. OR is it better to shoot really high, narrowly miss it, but actually end up doing better than an average target because you’ve stretched everyone? Let me know what you think in the comments or on Twitter. Bloomberg recently predicted 1,200 which would be a massively embarrassing fail for an organisation which has recently pitched themselves as the de facto ‘Tesla Tracker’.   MODEL X CRASH SPILLS ONTO TWITTER Finally on Tesla for now, an article on Tesla Motors Club said that the investigators working on the Model X crash in California were unhappy with Tesla. The NTSB didn’t appreciate Tesla revealing the black box data such as the fact the driver had been reminded to put his hands back on the wheel and that Autopilot was engaged at the time. Elon Musk responded to the NTSB via twitter pointing out that the NHTSA regulates cars, not the NTSB. He added Tesla releases critical crash data affecting public safety immediately and always will. "To do otherwise would be unsafe," said Musk.   ON THE (ELECTRIC) BUSES On the podcast I’ve mentioned the difference between electric vehicles and electric miles, and why it’s important to electrify the vehicles which travel the farthest. Some estimates say your personal car is in use for 4% of the time you own it. Well ChargedEVs have another great story about electric buses, saying: “London’s world-famous red buses are steadily going electric. Route 153 serves many of the City of London’s most congested streets, between Finsbury Park in the north and Moorgate in the heart of the financial district. This route will be the fourth in the capital to go fully electric, with a new fleet consisting of eleven 10.8-meter single-deck Enviro200EV electric buses, jointly manufactured by China-based BYD and Scotland-based Alexander Dennis. The depot will be served by charging points manufactured by BYD. Buses provided by the BYD/Alexander Dennis partnership have already accumulated over a million miles of emissions-free operation in London, Liverpool and Nottingham.   END OF THE LINE FOR i3 AND i8 Onto the BMW i3 and i8 next, and between Carbuzz and Automotive news report that: “Automotive Newsreports that with the BMW i4 and iNext EVs set to debut in 2020 and 2021, the i3 and i8 will likely no longer be needed. Or, in other words, neither will be redesigned. “These cars are very unique”, said Stefan Juraschek, head of electric powertrain for BMW. “These two cars were not (developed) as a family that we can expand in different (ways) or maybe five or 10 derivatives.” Instead, they were (and still are) technological showcases. For 2017, the i3 received a series of updates and it’s now a full EV while the refreshed i8 coupe and new roadster remains a plug-in hybrid only.” I also tried to chase up any news about a larger BMW i3 battery but the most recent thing I could find was 2 months old. The latest is that sometime in 2018 BMW will squeeze a 40kWh battery into the i3, effectively doubling the capacity of the launch car in 2013.   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Friday 30th March 2018. TESLA MODEL 3 PRODUCTION Tesla’s earning call will be next week as the quarter ends, and investors will want to know if Model 3 production reached the 2,500 cars per week which was guided. And the answer is…maybe. I’ve read a lot of websites toady and read blogs and watched videos, most of which from people who REALLY know what they’re talking about. But here’s the thing, we’ve not heard from Tesla. Bloomberg says they’re making 200 a day and they claim to have an email from Doug Field, Senior Vice President of Engineering, to employees at Fremont factory last week: “The world is watching us very closely, to understand one thing: How many Model 3’s can Tesla build in a week? This is a critical moment in Tesla’s history, and there are a number of reasons it’s so important. You should pick the one that hits you in the gut and makes you want to win. We set high goals at Tesla, but I know we can do this. If we keep climbing from 300 through the end of the week, it will be an incredible victory. Your friends and family will hear about it in the news.”   DRIVE CHANGE, DRIVE ELECTRIC The Verge report that a new marketing campaign is on the way to persuade Americans to give batteries a chance, it’s called “Drive Change, Drive Electric”. Sixteen major automakers are teaming up with seven Northeastern states to support a new advertising venture with the aim of getting Americans to buy more electric cars. The goal isn’t to make everyone a Tesla owner. Organizers will place a heavy focus on hybrid vehicles, both standard and plug-in hybrids, in the interest of casting as wide a net as possible. “We believe that people owe it to themselves to get behind the wheel of an electric car,” says Steve Douglas, senior director of environmental affairs at the Alliance for Automobile Manufacturers. “They should talk to people who drive electric cars because we believe an electric car should be on their short list.”   WORKHORSE Earlier in the week we told you about the new Workhorse van and it has been unveiled in San Francisco. Duane Hughes, Workhorse President and COO, added: Rolling out this history making fleet of N-GEN vans in one of the most innovative cities in America is something myself and the entire team are extremely proud of. This deployment is the
