In this episode, TK shares his busy week involving golf, horse racing, and family events, including his daughter's first auction and his upcoming birthday. Cameron updates on the QAV light portfolio's performance, noting it's now beating the index since inception and for the financial year, despite selling EHL and TPG. They discuss Dollarama's acquisition of The Reject Shop (TRS) at a significant premium, speculate on the rationale, and touch on potential challenges for Dollarama in the Australian market. Concerns are raised about Stockopedia following staff departures and data discrepancies, particularly with Price to Operating Cash Flow (PropCAF) figures. The hosts delve into ASIC and the RBA scrutinizing the ASX over CHESS replacement issues and operational risks. They analyze several stocks: Accent Group (AX1) potentially seeing increased stake from Fraser's Group, New Hope Group's positive results and share buyback amidst slumping coal prices, Ramelius Resources' (RMS) controversial acquisition of Spartan Resources and subsequent removal from Stock Doctor's star list due to disclosure and financial concerns, and NZME's results, potential corporate activity involving Stuff, and a looming board challenge from Canadian billionaire Jim Grennan. A significant discussion revolves around establishing 'red flags' for corporate governance issues, triggered by Helia's (HLI) CEO selling shares before bad news, Indiana Resources (IDA) failing to lodge reports on time, and broader concerns about management integrity, timely disclosure, and when to remove a red flag. They also cover TPG Telecom's sale of assets to Vocus and perform a deep dive into Santos (STO), including its history, recent performance, QAV metrics, and associated risks. The episode wraps up with 'After Hours' chat about classic TV shows like Joe 90 and Odd Squad, films like Unforgiven and Ipcress File, music discoveries including Transplants and The Distillers, and TK's upcoming horse races.

Peter Shankman is a serial entrepreneur, author, speaker, podcaster, and thought leader in marketing and public relations. Ever wanted to be quoted in a major news outlet as an authority or an expert in your space? Now, you can get valuable PR placements for free. In this conversation, we talked about Peter's free new online service, Source of Sources. Launched earlier this summer, SOS is already making waves in the world of public relations with over 22,000 subscribers. Much like its better-known earlier incarnation, HARO – which stands for Help a Reporter Out – Source of Sources is an email listserv designed to make it easier for journalists to find the sources they need, and for sources, such as brands, business owners, and thought leaders to get the publicity they seek. Up to three times a day, subscribers get an email with queries by journalists from various media outlets.  If a journalist asks about a topic you know a lot about, simply reply directly with helpful information or feedback for a chance to be featured or quoted in the story. The only rule? Only reply to a journalist's query, or SOS, if you have something productive and relevant to add. If you respond with something unhelpful, you will be permanently removed from the list! No exceptions; no appeals. This is serious business. He's not messing around here! Peter Shankman is perhaps best known as the founder of HARO (Help a Reporter Out), an online service that worked the same ways as Source of Sources. Groundbreaking at the time and user-friendly, HARO bridged the gap between journalists and public brands seeking media coverage by allowing journalists to connect with industry experts and the public for feedback on issues related to their reporting. In 2010, HARO was sold to Vocus, which was subsequently acquired by Cision in 2014. Earlier this year,  Cision folded the classic HARO into Connectively, a web-based tool. Shortly after, our guest, Peter Shankman revived HARO as Source of Sources, an incredible resource he provides to subscribers free of charge.  A lifelong Manhattanite, marketing expert, and futurist, the New York Times called Peter Shankman “a rock star who knows everything about social media and then some.” He is a 5X best-selling author, and the author of Faster Than Normal: Turbocharge Your Focus, Productivity, and Success with the Secrets of the ADHD Brain. He also has a fantastic podcast about ADHD called The Faster than Normal podcast where he interviews psychologists and successful people from all fields who have ADHD. I highly recommend the book and the podcast is one of my favorites!  In this episode, Peter Shankman and I spoke about Source of Sources, the current state of PR and news media in general, and how to become savvier consumers of information. We also discussed Mental Capital Consulting, a consultancy he co-founded with a psychologist in 2023 that helps companies attract, hire, and retain neurodiverse employees while helping companies to become neuro-inclusive. And, to top it all off we resolved a mysterious bone of contention about cold pizza.  Peter assured us his new service, Source of Sources is free, but he says if you really feel like sending him a donation, you should send it to a charity such as Best Friends Animal Society or The NYC Mayor's Alliance for Animals.  Watch on YouTube:  Follow Peter on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/petershankman/  Learn more about Source of Sources: https://sourceofsources.com/ Mental Capital Consulting: https://mentalcapitalconsulting.com/ Coaching and Mastermind: https://www.shankminds.com/  Instagram: @petershankman https://www.instagram.com/petershankman/ Over 79K followers Faster than Normal Podcast: https://www.fasterthannormal.com/  Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Shankman

CFO Thought Leader

CFO Thought Leader

Play Episode Listen Later May 1, 2024 36:10

From his early days in auditing at PwC to his current role as CFO at Prophix, Aaron Levine has had a career that has closely tracked the evolving nature of the financial leadership role. His journey has been marked by a series of strategic transitions and expansions of his skill set that illustrate the broadening demands of being a modern CFO. An important early chapter of Levine's professional development was his tenure under Steve Vintz, who at the time was CFO of Vocus, where Levine served as a VP managing both accounting and finance. It was under Vintz's mentorship that Levine came to appreciate the power of storytelling within financial leadership. Vintz, a very externally focused CFO, adeptly navigated public company landscapes, from investor relations to quarterly earnings calls. His ability to craft compelling narratives that resonated with stakeholders profoundly influenced Levine. This exposure revealed to Levine that effective CFOs do more than manage numbers: They tell stories through them. This realization has since become integral to his maturing CFO mindset, particularly as he looks to highlight the strategic benefits of Prophix's software offerings. At Prophix, where Levine was appointed CFO this past January, the goal is to focus on refining the go-to-market metrics and integrating technology to streamline operations, emphasizing the narrative of growth and scalability. Throughout his career, Levine has learned that a CFO's role is about not just financial oversight but also constructing a vision that propels the business forward. His aspirations underscore a crucial CFO skill: the ability not only to foresee financial outcomes but also to articulate them in a way that drives the entire company's strategy. This blend of analytics and narrative, shaped by his experiences, define Levine's CFO mindset.

If you don't have a map, you're lost. How do you know where you're going or even what the next step is? This is true whether you're navigating Middle Earth or content creation. We're here to help you get oriented. In this episode, we're taking marketing lessons from The Hobbit with the help of our special guest, CMO at ChurnZero, Hunter Montgomery.Together, we talk about drawing a map, finding a mentor who will push you out of your comfort zone, blocking and tackling, and getting your partners to tell your story.About our guest, Hunter MontgomeryHunter Montgomery is Chief Marketing Officer at ChurnZero, customer success platform providers. Hunter is a results-driven marketing professional with more than 25 years experience developing, executing and measuring global sales and marketing strategies and campaigns. He has held executive and upper management roles at Higher Logic, Vocus (now Cision), and Verizon. What B2B Companies Can Learn From The Hobbit:Draw a map. Have a plan for your content from creation to promotion, reuse, repurposing and beyond. Hunter says, “You can't just start out thinking, ‘Well, I'm here and I want to get there. I'll figure it out along the way.' You gotta have a plan. You have a map. You will get things thrown at you and so know it's going to change a little bit along the way. But you just can't say, ‘Well, I'll know when I get there.' That doesn't really work.” The Hobbit starts with a map. And just like how the reader can find their bearings throughout the story by revisiting the map, a content map or plan is useful for marketers too. The map gives you your foundation to be prepared and guide you along the way. And it's also super satisfying to look back at your map and see how far you've come.Find a mentor who will push you out of your comfort zone. This is undoubtedly Gandalf. Because hobbits are creatures of comfort, it's Gandalf who gives Bilbo the push to go on an adventure. So find your Gandalf. Ian says, “It doesn't actually have to be someone you know. It could be someone you listen to on a podcast. It could be someone who is out in the culture, who you follow on Twitter, or it could be someone that you know personally.” He says, “Gandalf is the one who recognizes with Bilbo, ‘I think there's something unique about you, and I think that you need this push.' And it's just special. It's one of the great things about this story, is that Gandalf believes that Bilbo can do it.”Block and tackle. Hunter says, “Sometimes you just got to get the basic stuff done every day, little by little. Two months, three months, six months, a year later, you're where you needed to be. And I think people sometimes just track it out. They want the big and the brash. You gotta go big sometimes. You gotta take big risks and be creative. And I totally believe you have to do that. And when people zig, you gotta zag.  But a lot of other times, you just gotta get it done. And so I think Bilbo was the one who did that.”Partner up. Don't be the one telling your audience how great you are. Find partners who will do that for you. It builds credibility and trust. Hunter says, “It could be vendors, could be thought leaders, bringing them in. Have them talk, have them validate customers. Customers are great for content. We have a community, so you hear from them on that, but don't be the source. Just try to find other places, other people to tell your story, because they can do it better. And they're more legitimate in the eyes of the buyer in many ways.”Quotes*”Finding people to collaborate, there's co-marketing, there's co-creating. Co-creating content with your ideal customers or prospects is so important. Cause we always try to figure out like, ‘What do they want to hear? Why don't we just go make it with them?'” - Ian Faison*”The content needs to match the journey. Customer journey mapping is one way of doing it. But I think that that can be too specific to your actual exact journey of your customers. And I think you need to sometimes pull back from that and have a bigger picture. Have a map, but don't let it restrict what you do.” - Hunter Montgomery*”People are pretty poor at telling their own stories. But if you ask enough questions to get the right answers and dig in there, then you can really find those pearls of wisdom and put that stuff together in a really meaningful, digestible format.” - Ian Faison*”Just go after something. Take a leap of faith in something that you feel strongly is going to work. - Hunter MontgomeryTime Stamps[0:55] Meet Hunter Montgomery, CMO at ChurnZero[1:32] Hunter Montgomery's Hobbit-Inspired Marketing Insights[3:33] The Hobbit's Origin Story: From Bedtime Tales to Global Phenomenon[8:50] Marketing Lessons from Middle Earth[15:57] The Power of Maps in Storytelling and Marketing[21:49] Exploring Bilbo's Unassuming Heroism[22:48] Marketing Lessons from Gandalf's Mentorship[24:18] B2B Marketing Insights and Strategies[27:00] Leveraging Content and Partnerships in Marketing[31:47] Evolving Event Strategies and Content Creation[35:20] Navigating the Tech Stack and Data Integration[38:52] Strategic Content Planning and ExecutionLinksRead The HobbitConnect with Hunter on LinkedInLearn more about ChurnZeroAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. CFO Thought Leader

With regard to finance leaders who are counted among the ranks of today's SaaS CFOs, it goes without saying that 20 years ago, most were somewhere other than at SaaS companies. In fact, many of them have no doubt arrived inside the SaaS realm only within the past 10 years or so as part of the software industry's great migration from the model of perpetually selling software to the SaaS subscription model. However, for CFO Bas Brukx, the SaaS world has been home for more than 20 years, a fact that allows him to take a seat alongside other CFOs who can boast of pioneer roots inside SaaS-dom. “We had the benefit of not knowing what we didn't know,” recalls Brukx, who notes that back in 2002, such a widely used metric as Customer Acquisition Cost was only then just being defined. At the time, Brukx was head of FP&A for Vocus, a SaaS software company specializing in solutions for the public relations and communication industries. “We did a lot of education with analysts and investors,” points out Brukx, who adds that Vocus went public in 2005. He would remain with the company for another 7 years before being appointed CFO of Clarabridge, a small software company aspiring to move to the SaaS subscription model.   According to Brukx, he didn't hesitate to swiftly leave the perpetual model in Clarabridge's rearview mirror. “We discontinued that perpetual business largely on my recommendation, so I was betting a lot on my reputation—but I felt comfortable about it,” comments Brukx, who says that the decisive move allowed him to position himself as a strategic finance leader at the very start of his CFO tenure with the firm. Subsequently, only 9 months after he joined it, the newly retooled SaaS company raised an $80 million equity investment led by Summit Partners and General Catalyst Partners. Reports Brukx: “That investment and some of their investor expertise gave us the backing that we needed to make the journey from $20 million in revenue to well over $100 million—at which point we were sold.” –Jack Sweeney

Get A Better Broadcast, Podcast and Video Voice

2021.12.09 – 0343 – The Point of VocusThe Point of VocusPut simply, the microphone is usually positioned in our ‘inmate' zone 6-8 inches from our mouth. If it was a human ear rather than a mic that we were talking to at that distance, we would be very friendly indeed with that person! Our voice would drop in volume, the tone would change (and so too would the content – but that's another book). But it would be inappropriate to read the news or usually to introduce a song in that kind of ‘intimate' voice, even though that's where our listener's ears are. It wouldn't sound right. We have to change our ‘point of vocus' and use another ‘voice'. Hmmm. We chose the voice that we naturally use when we are talking to someone that we know, and like but are not intimate with or distant from. So not, from the barbecue event we looked at earlier, the ‘aunt down the hallway voice' (as she was too far away to hold a conversation with); not ‘aunt on the bench voice' as she was too close, and in a personal zone. But more like ‘having a conversation with aunt and uncle in the garden voice' – that is somewhere between one and three metres away from us.Audio recording script and show notes (c) 2021 Peter StewartThrough these around-5-minute episodes, you can build your confidence and competence with advice on breathing and reading, inflection and projection, the roles played by better scripting and better sitting, mic techniques and voice care tips... with exercises and anecdotes from a career spent in TV and radio studios. Building several successful enterprises while living with undiagnosed ADHD is a tough endeavor, but it can also be an interesting take on life. In this first episode of Before IT Happened, our host Donna Loughlin talks to marketing expert, entrepreneur, and best-selling author Peter Shankman.  Peter was a founding editor of AOL News before we'd ever heard of online journalism. He leaned into the early dot-com boom by launching Geek Factory, one of the first PR firms designed to put a spotlight on the tech visionaries of the era. He later created HARO, a database used to connect journalists and sources around the world. He sold both Geek Factory and HARO, but he didn't stop there. His ADHD diagnosis has led him to a bigger understanding of life reflected in his best-selling book “Faster Than Normal” and his more recent undertaking helping companies understand neurodiversity. Listen now to hear Peter's unique journey from academic cautionary tale to a multimedia juggernaut by turning his ADHD brain into a superpower. Before any world-changing innovation there was a moment, an event, a realization that sparked the idea before it happened. This is a podcast about that moment — about that idea. Before IT Happened takes you on a journey with the innovators who imagined — and are still imagining — our future. Join host Donna Loughlin as her guests tell their stories of how they brought their visions to life. Jump straight into: (03:10) - Peter's artistic upbringing with undiagnosed ADHD and how journalism at Boston University saved him - “To go from being on academic probation for two and a half straight years to receiving BU's Alumni Award was a nice moment.” (07:48) - Building a newsroom for AOL in the early internet days - “AOL was the internet, no question about it. I was so early in the game, I actually had peter@aol.com, which was amazing.” (11:10) - Starting Geek Factory - “I called my mom and I said, ‘I'm going to go out on my own, I'm going to try to start a PR firm and when it fails, I'll get a job.'” (13:14) - The story behind Peter's journalism mailing list HARO (Help a Reporter Out) - “Originally it was a Facebook group, and that led to the formation of HARO. It blew up beyond my wildest dreams. I got very very lucky.” (15:29) - Getting acquired by Vocus and Peter's first hours as a multimillionaire - “It probably took about five months from initial contact to acquisition. If we didn't have lawyers, it would have taken a week.” (17:23) - The secret to becoming hyper-focused - “I rock at what I'm good at and I let other people do what I suck at because they just do it so much better than I ever could.” (20:13) - Peter's ADHD diagnosis and how it helped him get a new understanding of life - “I'm very happy. I'm very fortunate. I think that all the mistakes and all the screw-ups, everything I've done has led me to this point.” (26:09) - Using skydiving as a drug - “It is the ultimate reboot. I can't get back on the plane, I can't stop and redo it. I will either make the decision to live or I'll make the decision to die. Life doesn't get simpler than those 45 to 60 seconds of free fall.” (28:33) - All things Shankman: How Peter manages a whole ecosystem of projects - “All I'm really doing is I'm telling stories about things I love and I am so ridiculously blessed that I get paid to tell stories about things I love.” (31:13) - Helping companies be neurodiverse friendly  - “The goal is to understand what the neuro-diverse person needs and to teach companies how to be more understanding.” (33:19) - Faster Than Normal, Peter's future projects and the best advice he ever received - “Basically everything I have and all the success I've had has come from the fact that I listen.” Episode Resources Connect with Peter at https://www.shankman.com/ (Shankman.com) Read Peter Shankman's book https://www.amazon.com/Faster-Than-Normal-audiobook/dp/B07648CSNN (Faster Than Normal) Listen to Peter Shankman's...

Sky TV has appointed investment bank Jarden to advise it on a range of "unsolicited approaches", shareholders were told today at an Investor Day presentation. The pay-TV provider declined to provide any detail about who made the approaches, however, or if any of them involved a takeover offer - although others (see below) see the likes of Discovery and Comcast in the frame.Chairman Philip Bowman told the virtual audience that, "Over the last 12 months Sky has received a number of unsolicited approaches around potential transactions, all of which have been highly conditional and incomplete."Bowman added, "With the capital structure now stabilised, a strong position in the NZ market, and a revitalised strategy, the board does not believe the current share price reflects the underlying value of the company."Sky, with help from Jarden, will evaluate "strategic investment partnerships that deliver sustained ongoing growth to the rights content and distribution reach of the company, which in turn will accelerate the creation of shareholder value," the chairman said.Sky chief executive Sophie Moloney said, "Sky's leadership team and staff maintain our absolute focus on delivering the strategy outlined today, whilst being open to exploring opportunities to accelerate further sustainable value creation for shareholders."Moloney could not comment further. Some pundits interpreted Sky's statements as implying a possible takeover was in the offing.Investors appeared to not immediately embrace the theory, however, with Sky shares trading down 1.18 per cent to 16.8c (for a market cap of $293m) in mid-afternoon trading following this morning's update.A piece published in The Australian's market gossip column this afternoon, says "DataRoom understands that the interest has come from local private equity groups as well as global strategic parties."It goes on to speculate that Discovery (the new owner of MediaWorks' television operation), US company Comcast (which bought Sky UK and is understood to have approached Sky NZ 18 months ago), NBCUniversal or a telco would be logical buyers. In 2017, a proposed merger of Sky with Vodafone's NZ business was blocked by the Commerce Commission, with courts backing the regulator during appeals.Sky said it could not comment in any more detail. Asked if Sky could say point-blank if a takeover was among the approaches, Sky external relations director Chris Major said "I can't comment specifically. A range of options and approaches are on the table - [all] incomplete and highly conditional."Although Sky shares have gained 13.5 per cent this year, the company's $293m, they are still well off the $2.35 at the time of the 2017 Vodafone offer, which in turn was only a third of pay-TV broadcaster's high water mark.Sky also said today that its new, Android-powered set-top box, which will support 4K ultra high definition video and third-party apps such as Netflix, will not appear until mid-2022. In an early briefing the company had said it could be ready as soon as June this year. The company has set a customer target of 150,000 to 200,000 by the end of 2024 for deploying the new Android boxes. The company also forecast that it would be growing revenue by $75m to $100m per year by 2024 as streaming services Neon and Sky Sport adding customers at a compound annual growth rate of 10 to 15 per cent over the next three years.Sky also provided the first targets for its new Sky Broadband service, provided in partnership with Chorus and Vocus (owner of Orcon and Slingshot). Its three-year target is for 8 to 13 per cent of Sky customers to be using the service (which is steeply discounted if you also have a Sky decoder contract), and 3 to 5 per cent of the broadband market overall.Earlier in the day, Spark announced it had expanded its sports rights by winning Champions League football from Sky.
